  • Oxy-fuel flame has a significantly different structure from that of air-fuel flame because of its high temperature. This study is aimed to find out the difference of the oxy-fuel flame structure in order to understand reaction mechanism closely, which is crucial to design real-scale oxy-fuel combustion system. By examining pictures of counterflow flame and LIF images, we found that oxy-fuel flame had two-zone structure: fuel decomposition region and distributed CO oxidation region. In the oxy-fuel flame, OH radical was distributed intensely through the whole flame due to its higher flame temperature than crossover temperature. For showing those features of the oxy-fuel flame, 1 MW scale IFRF oxy-natural gas burner was simulated by conditional moment closure(CMC) model. Calculation results were compared with experimental data, and showed agreements in trend. In the simulated distributions of fuel decomposition/CO oxidation rates, CO oxidation region was also separated from fuel decomposition zone considerably, which showed the two-zone structure in the oxy-fuel flame.

  • Geological and electrical resistivity surveys were carried out to investigate subsurface geology and geologic structure of the Bonghwajae area in the Okchon zone. Pseudosections of the apparent electrical resistivity distribution along the three survey lines were obtained by using dipole-dipole electrode array method, and models of subsurface geology and geologic structure by using two dimensional finite difference method. The Bonghwajae fault zone exists around Bonghwajae area in the north-south direction, and is a boundary between Okchon Group and Choson Supper Group. Metabasite and hornblende gabbro intruded along the Bonghwajae fault zone remaining two fracture zones with low resistivity value of 20 ohm-m and widths of about 100m and 70-300m. They strike nearly N-S and dip westward with a high angle of $60-70^{\circ}$. Sochangri fault with a width of about 160m exists between Jisogori and Bonghwajae, by which Bonghwajae fault zone is displaced about 1km in the east-west direction. Hornblende gabbro whose electrical resistivity value is in the range of 5000-8000 ohm-m intruded the metabasite of 2000-4500 ohm-m after the Sochangri fault had formed. Great Limestone Group is widely distributed in the east of Bonghwajae fault zone, and interbeds so called Yongam formation of graphitic black slate with an extremely low electrical resistivity value of 2 ohm-m.

  • Seasonal monitoring was implemented to understand the influence of macrophyte bed structure on the composition and trophic interaction of aquatic organisms (algae, zooplankton, macro-invertebrate, and fish) in a shallow wetland (Upo Wetland, South Korea). Distinct division of the plant assemblage (reed zone and mixed plant zone) was observed. The reed zone was composed solely of Phragmites communis, whereas the mixed plant zone comprised a diverse macrophyte assemblage (Salvinia natans, Spirodela polyrhiza, Trapa japonica, Ceratophyllum demersum, and Hydrilla verticillata). Most of the aquatic organisms were more abundant in the mixed plant zone than in the reed zone, and this was positively associated with the seasonal development of macrophyte cover. Stable isotope analysis showed seasonal interactions among aquatic organisms. The majority of aquatic animal (zooplankton, Odonata, and Ephemeroptera) were dependent on epiphytic particulate organic matter (EPOM), and the dependence on EPOM gradually increased toward autumn. Interestingly, Lepomis macrochirus consumed Ephemeroptera and zooplankton in both macrophyte zones, but Micropterus salmoides depended on different food items in the reed zone and the mixed plant zone. Although, M. salmoides in the reed zone showed food utilization similar to L. macrochirus, it consumed Odonata or small L. macrochirus in the mixed plant zone. Based on these results, it appears that differences in the structure of the two macrophyte zones support different assemblages of aquatic organisms, strongly influencing the trophic interactions between the aquatic organisms.

  • When planning to construct adjacent structure by the side tunnel, the criteria of safety zone of tunnel have been proposed. There are no specific theoretical basis regarding load conditions and the distance of structure and the geological strata and the conditions of adjacent structure's location, and the conditions applied load. Two and three dimensional numerical analysis preformed to prove the deformation of the ground and structures caused by the tunnel excavation and evaluated the correlation and the suitability of the tunnel's safety zone regarding the location of adjacent structures and the changes in the modulus of deformation. This paper proposed the safety zone's range is getting bigger as the modulus of deformation is higher. Also, it seems that the possible range of construction under constraints in the diagram of revalued safety zone significantly expands as shear failure line appears on the invert extension line below the spring line.

  • This paper is an analysis of the Category Individual Residence urban spatial structure along the National Route BO (Koushu-Kaido), one of the major roads in Japan, and the degree of differences between locations and its changes between the points of time. The analysis was based on the GIS technique. Whilst, previous studies were based on municipal boundaries or mesh units as sources of data, GIS allowed the use of variable geographical units, Roadside zone, Inner zone, North zone, South zone, Blocks. As an example to apply the technology of GIS, 1986's and 1991's building polygon data of the Urban Planning Bureau of Tokyo Metropolitan Government are used. The layers referred to the analyses is the building polygons with the amount of stories, building area, floor area and the material of the building. Two statistical analysis are executed; one is the test of the regional equality about the number of story of building, building area, floor area and fireproof building ratio.

  • When a crack is produced in a concrete structure, a micro crack zone of fracture process zone (FPZ) appears at the crack tip. To investigate the behaviour of this the micro crack zone, nonlinear fracture mechanics (NLFM) must be applied. However, when a massive concrete structure such as a concrete gravity dam is considered, the micro crack zone can be neglected and the structure can be assumed to have linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) behaviour. This study is divided into two main topics : (1) Calculating stress intensity factor (SIF) at the crack tip by surface integral method and (2) Investigating the propagation of the initial crack. If the initial crack propagates, the angle of the propagation is calculated by using maximum circumferential tensile strength theory. This study, also, contains the effects of body forces and water pressures on the crack face.

  • For the calculation of foundation settlement it is recommended to take into account so called influence zone inside the subsoil bellow the foundation structure. Influence zone inside the subsoil is the region where the load has a substantial influence on the deformation of the soil skeleton. The soil skeleton is pre-consolidated or over consolidated due to the original geostatic stress state. An excavation changes the original geostatic stress state and it creates the space for the load transferred from upper structure. The theory of elastic layer in Westergard manner is selected for the vertical stress calculation. The depth of influence zone is calculated from the equality of the original geostatic stress and the new geostatic stress due to excavation combined with the vertical stress from the upper structure. Two close formulas are presented for the influence zone calculation. Using ADINA code we carried out several numerical examples to verify the proposed analytical formulas and to enhance their use in civil engineering practice. Otherwise, the FEM code accuracy can be control.

  • In this paper, the effects of steel-fiber and rebar reinforcements on the ultimate bearing strength of the local anchorage zone were investigated based on experiments and comparisons between test results and design-equation predictions (AASHTO 2012, NCHRP 1994). Eighteen specimens were fabricated using the same anchorage device, which is one of the conventional anchorage devices, and two transverse ribs were used to secure an additional bearing area for a compact anchorage-zone design. Eight of the specimens were reinforced with only steel fiber and are of two concrete strengths, while six were reinforced with only rebars for two concrete strengths. The other four specimens were reinforced with both rebars and steel fiber for one concrete strength. The test and the comparisons between the design-equation predictions and the test results showed that the ultimate bearing strength and the section efficiency are highly affected by the reinforcement details and the concrete strength; moreover, the NCHRP equation can be conservatively applied to various local anchorage zones for the prediction of the ultimate bearing strength, whereby conditions such as the consideration of the rib area and the calibration factor are changed.

  • The structure of premixed tubulent flames in a constant-volume vessel was investigated using a schlieren method and microprobe method. The schlieren method was used to observe the flame structure qualitatively. The microprobe method, which detects a flamelet by detecting its flame potential signal, was used to investigate the deeper flame structure behind the flame front. The flame potential signal having one to six peaks was obtained in the case of turbulent flames, each of them being regarede as a flamelet existing in the flame zone. Based on this consideration, the flame propagation speed, the thickness of the flame zone, the number of flamelets and the separation distance between adjacent flamelets in the flame zone were measured. Moreover, the thickness of flamelet which could not be attempted in the conventional electrostatic probe method was also investigated. The experimental results of this work suggest the existence of "reactant islands" in the reaction zone, and show that the averaged number of flamelets increases with an increase in the turbulence intensity and/or a decrease in the Damkohler number. The mean thickness of flamelet in the case of turbulent flames was found to be about two times compared to laminar values.ar values.
