  • A zero voltage switching (ZVS) three level resonant pole inverter is presented for high power GTO inverters. The concept of auxiliary resonant commutated pole(ARCP) for two level inverter is extended to the three level inverter. The proposed auxiliary commutation circuit consists of one resonant inductor and two bi-directional switches, which provides ZVS condition to the main devices without increasing device voltage or current stresses. The auxiliary device operates with zero current switching(ZCS) which enables use of the low cost thyristors. The proposed circuit can handle higher voltage and higher power(1-10MVA) comparing to the two level one. Operation and analysis of the proposed circuit are illustrated. Experimental results with 10 KW, 4 kHz prototype are presented to verify the principle of operation.

  • It is very important to understand and interpret the meaning of the sigma level correctly through the Six Sigma project. Especially, the confusion over the relation between sigma level from the short-term point of view and defective proportion or DPMO from the long-term point of view may make a big gap between expected results of the Six Sigma project and real results in the field. The one-tail approximation is commonly used to calculate the sigma level both in most literatures introducing Six Sigma and actual cases of the Six Sigma project. Since the one-tail approximation undervalues the sigma level of the fields such as business and service of which the sigma level is generally low, however. there can be misleading results of the explanation of the sigma level and inappropriate project evaluation. This paper describes the relation between sigma level and defective proportion in detail and clears the difference between the one-tail and two-tail approximation.

  • To increase the sensitivity of film-type level sensors for water-level measurements, a Wheatstone bridge comprising a half-bridge circuit with a new film-type level sensor design containing four resistors and two electrodes was employed. The proposed film-type level sensor included a temperature compensation feature and demonstrated improved sensitivity owing to a two-fold increase in the voltage output. Furthermore, a repetition error of less than 1.0% was observed for water levels. As the change in resistance varied linearly with the water level, a linear function was derived to represent their relation. Using this derived formula, water level measurements that were twice as precise as those yielded by commercial products were achieved.

  • This study examines the two-level behavior of the toggle brace damper within a steel frame having a yielding pipe damper and rotational friction damper. The proposed system has two kinds of fuse for energy dissipation in two stages. In this mechanism, rotational friction damper rather than hinged connection is used in toggle brace system, connected to a pipe damper with a limited gap. In order to create a gap, bolted connection with the slotted hole is used, such that first a specific movement of the rotational friction damper solely is engaged but with an increase in movement, the yielding damper is also involved. The performance of the system is such that at the beginning of loading the rotational friction damper, as the first fuse, absorbs energy and with increasing the input load and further movement of the frame, yielding damper as the second fuse, along with rotational friction damper would dissipate the input energy. The models created by ABAQUS are subjected to cyclic and seismic loading. Considering the results obtained, the flexibility of the hybrid two-level system is more comparable to the conventional toggle brace damper. Moreover, this system sustains longer lateral displacements. The energy dissipation of these two systems is modeled in multi-story frames in SAP2000 software and their performance is analyzed using time-history analysis. According to the results, permanent relocations of the roof in the two-level system, in comparison with toggle brace damper system in 2, 5, and 8-story building frames, in average, decrease by 15, 55, and 37% respectively. This amount in a 5-story building frame under the earthquakes with one-third scale decreases by 64%.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the acquisition of number-word systems of young children. Specifically, the acquisition of Korean Number-Words(KNW) was compared with the acquisition of Chinese-derived Number-Words(CNW). The subjects included 120 children aged 2:5 to 5:11. The subjects oral counting using the two number word systems were audiotaped. Two coders transcribed the tapes. The data were analyzed by content analysis with descriptive statistics. The findings of this study showed that the acquisition of KNW began from around age two and the acquisition of CNW from around age three. From then, the acquisition of the two number-word systems was parallel. The acquisition of number-words began from the age of 2 years, increased slowly to the age of 4. and then increased rapidly after the age of 5. Although KNW were acquired earlier than CNW, at around the age of 5 years the acquisition of CNW surpassed the acquisition of KNW. The acquisition of number words consists of four developmental levels: Level I: beginning of acquisition of traditional KNW only Level II: beginning of acquisition of CNW with extension of KNW Level III: parallel extension of the two number-word systems Level IV: superior acquisition of CNW. The major error through all stages in the sequence of number words was the omission of one number-word. Younger children produced errors of omission of one, two or three number-words, whereas older children produced errors of nonstandard number-words and repetition.

  • This is an analysis of 39 patients studied at the Yonsei Medical Center from January, 1976 to March 1979. Of these35 patient were suspected of having hypothalamic insufficiency and subjected to the L-Dopa stimulation test to observe growth hormone sceretory function while four acromegaly patient received the glucose loading test and L-Dopa stimulation test. The results are as follows: 1. The basal level of GH in the various disease was as follows: a. The basal level was lower than the control level but was not statistically significant b. In diabetes the mean value tended to be higher than the control level but was not significant statistically c. In all four acromegaly patients the GH level was significantly higher than the control level 2. Of 13 patients with diabetes, nine had diabetic retinopathy, and of those nine, sir showed increased L-Dopa response. However, of the four non retinopathic DM patients, only one showed increased response to L-Dopa. 3. Two patients out of ten with Sheehan's syndrome responded to L-Dopa stimulation. 4. One Patient of eight with pituitary chromophobe adenoma responded to L-Dopa stimulation. 5. Four acromegaly patients revealed 3 acidophilic adenoma and one chromophobe adenoma histologically. Of patients receiving the L-Dopa stimulation test. Two showed a paradoxical response. Two patients who received the glucose loading test showed supressed response. 6. Of two craniopharyngioma patients, one showed increased GH response after L-Dopa stimulation. Increased response of GH after L-Dopa stimulation was seen in one of two craniopharyngioma patients and also in one of two patients with

  • To predict the average liquid level under the condition of the countercurrent stratified two-phase flow in a pipe, an analytical model has been suggested. This is made by introducing the interfacial level gradient into the liquid-phase and the gas-phase momentum equations. The analytical method for the gas-phase pressure drop calculation with f$_i$ $\neq$ f$_G$ has also been described using the liquid level prediction model developed in the present study.

  • Objective : This study assessed the efficacy of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) with cage alone compared with ACDF with plate instrumentation for radiologic and clinical outcomes in two-level cervical degenerative disease. Methods : Patients with cervical degenerative disc disease from September 2004 to December 2009 were assessed retrospectively. A total of 42 patients received all ACDF at two-level cervical lesion. Twenty-two patients who underwent ACDF with cage alone were compared with 20 patients who underwent ACDF with plate fixation in consideration of radiologic and clinical outcomes. Clinical outcomes were assessed using Robinson's criteria and posterior neck pain, arm pain described by a 10 point-visual analog scale. Fusion rate, subsidence, kyphotic angle, instrument failure and the degenerative changes in adjacent segments were examined during each follow-up examination. Results : VAS was checked during each follow-up and Robinson's criteria were compared in both groups. Both groups showed no significant difference. Fusion rates were 90.9% (20/22) in ACDF with the cage alone group, 95% (19/20) in ACDF with the plate fixation group (p = 0.966). Subsidence rates of ACDF with cage alone were 31.81% (7/22) and ACDF with plate fixation were 30% (6/20) (p = 0.928). Local and regional kyphotic angle difference showed no significant difference. At the final follow-up, adjacent level disease developed in 4.54% (1/22) of ACDF with cage alone and 10% (2/20) of ACDF with plate fixation (p= 0.654). Conclusion : In two-level ACDF, ACDF with cage alone would be comparable with ACDF with plate fixation with regard to clinical outcome and radiologic result with no significant difference. We suggest that the routine use of plate and screw in 2-level surgery may not be beneficial.

  • This study presents a two-level inventory distribution system with one-upper level facility(warehouse) in first echelon and n-lower level facilities(stores) in the second echelon. The demand process at the upper level is induced by the aggregated backorder processes of n independently operated lower level facilities in parallel. For the upper level and the lower level we find the decision points and the distribution function of the aggregate backorders from n-stores. Optimal allocation units and expected system profits are obtained. If the product is of great enough importance to the customer, echelon structure will include a shadow installation. Also, this case is analyzed. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the results for each case.

  • Korean diffusive sampler (KDS) and charcoal tube (CT) were used for sampling n-hexane, trichloroethylene and toluene in air KDS was made by Department of Environmental Health, SNU-SPH in 1995. Surveys were conducted at ten industrial plants with organic solvents. The relationship between two sampling methods was examined by linear regression analysis, and concentrations by two sampling methods were compared using paired t-test. The results are as follows: 1. The geometric means by CT and KDS methods were 3.26ppm and 3.32ppm for n-hexane, 5.07ppm and 6.34ppm for toluene, and 7.18ppm and 7.90ppm for toluene, respectively. There was no significant difference between results by CT and KDS methods in three organic vapors (p>0.05). When linear regression analysis was performed, two sampling methods were highly related ; correlation coefficients were 0.98, 0.90 and 0.96 for n-hexane, toluene and trichloroethylene, respectively. 2. Airborne concentrations of n-hexane (n=21) were below 0.5 TLV level. The GM by two methods were almost same (3.09 ppm). And there was no significant difference between results by two methods (p>0.05). 3. Since toluene and trichloroethylene concentrations showed several levels, appropriate sampling rates were applied for each level. The GM of toluene concentrations by two methods at 0.5 TLV level were 3.75ppm and 5.48ppm. The KDS method overestimated the toluene concentrations at 0.5 TLV level (p<0.05). The GM values of toluene concentrations at 1 TLV level were 31.80ppm and 25.38ppm and at 2 TLV level were 64.13 ppm and 51.37 ppm. The KDS method underestimated concentration at both level (p<0.05). For trichloroethylene, the GM at 0.5 TLV level were 4.97 ppm and 7.11ppm. The KDS method overestimated the concentration of trichloroethylene (p<0.05). In conclusion, concentrations of three organic vapors measured by CT and KDS were not significantly different and results by two methods were highly related. But at contain concentrations, the levels by method were significantly different. Therefore, it is suggested that sampling rate of KDS should be studied simultaneously using CT method for organic vapors.
