  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mother's perception on the concrete pattern of such behavior problems as noncompliance, jealousy, dependency, hyperactivity and stealing, by analyzing the difference between two cases of her own child and another mother's child relating to her attribution to the behavior problem of the child and the relationship between her attribution and behavioral reaction. This study was carried out by using 515 questionnaires answered by 1000 mothers of children of 7 kindergartens in Ulsan and Taegu, using Melissa Sweitzer's method (1986). The data was subjected to t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient. T-test was applied to test the difference between two cases of her own child and another mother's child relating to her attribution to the behavior problem of the child and Person's correlation coefficient was estimated to test the relationship between her attribution and behavioral reaction. The result of this study is sumarized as follows : 1. It was shown that the mother's attribution to the behavior problem of the child is less serious when her child showed the behavior problem than when another child dose the problem while her attribution has an affective reaction to the behavior problem of the child. 2. The relationship between the mother's attribution and behavior reaction to the behavior problem of the child appeared variously in accordance with the attribution factor and behavior problem. Then the mother showed more attribution to stability while frequently ignoring the child.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to describe mother's child-rearing attitudes and problem conduct of children as perceived by children and to examine correlation between maternal nurturing attitudes and child problem behavior. Method: The participants were 338 fifth and sixth graders who attended two randomly selected elementary schools in the city of G, Gangwon province. Child-rearing attitudes of the mother were rated on a 5-pointed scale that developed by Schaefer and added by Oh & Lee(1982). Problem conduct of children were rated on a 3-pointed scale of the K-YSR by Oh Kyung-Ja et al.(1997). The data were gathered from October 2 to October 28, 2004, and the collected data were analyzed with SPSS 10.0 program. Results: For the children's perception of mother's child-rearing attitude, student had a relatively high mean scores of 3.70±0.44. Correlations between the mother's child-rearing attitude and general characteristics of the children showed statistically significantly different according to grade, father-mother relations, type of residence and extent to which father shared household chores. The mean score for problem conducts of children was 0.47±0.25. The average for their internal behavior problems was 0.52±0.33, and for external behavior problems was 0.44±0.24. There were statistically significantly differences in the behavior problem scores of the children according to the general characteristics of grade, education, occupation, mother-father relations, extent to which father shared in household chores and religion. As to correlation between mother's child-rearing attitude and their problem conduct, every type of attitude had a significantly moderate reverse correlation to every type of behavior problem of the children(r=-.431, p=.000). Conclusion: Mother's child-rearing attitudes might affect the problem conduct of children, and mother should try to treat their children with affection and respect, to maintain good relations with father, and to bring their children up coherently in an autonomous, permissive, positive and democratic manner.

  • This study investigated the effects of Korean parents' family-of-origin experiences, marital conflict, open or dysfunctional communication with their children, children's coping behaviors on their behavior problems as a function of a child's sex. Theoretical models for both sexes were constructed based on the results. Two hundred and nine boys and one hundred and ninety six girls of 4th and 5th grades from two elementary schools filled out the questionnaires to assess their communication with the parents, their problem-focused coping behaviors, and their internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. Four hundred five parents of these children answered the questionnaires to assess differentiation for the family-of-origin and the marital conflict. The results were as follows. Boys' path pattern showed that the fathers' differentiation from the family-of-origin effected their sons' internalizing and externalizing behavior problems through parent-child dysfunctional communication. Girls' path exhibited two different patterns. One is that the mothers' differentiation from the family-of-origin effected their daughters' internalizing and externalizing behavior problems through parent-child dysfunctional communication. Another one is that the mothers' differentiation from the family-of-origin influenced children's internalizing behavior problems through daughters' problem-focused coping behaviors as well as parent-child dysfunctional communication.

  • A pilot parent education program composed of 8 two-hour sessions was developed on the philosophy of a democratic parent-child relationship. The program focused not only on a concept of personal respect toward children but on change in parenting behaviors through a process of problem-solving. Problem-solving was implemented by encouraging active participation of parents in developing an understanding of the causes of problem behavior and searching for their own solutions. 19 mothers aged 29 to 37 were pre- and post-tested. Two months later, 15 of them responded to a questionnaire (follow-up test). Their concepts of children and parenting behaviors changed dramatically shortly after participation in the program. However, results of the follow-up test showed the such gains are not always long lasting. This implies that further investigation is needed for helping mothers retain the effectiveness of the program.

Two hundred and fifty nine children of the 3rd and the 5th grades were chosen from 3 elementary schools as the subjects. Data from two hundreds and six children were analysed. Alternative problem solving strategies as one of children's interpersonal problem solving strategies and their temperament were analysed according to their grade, sex, and the target persons. Children showed age and sex differences in using strategies; the 3rd graders used more solutions than the 5th graders in affirmative strategies and the girls used more solutions than the boys in affirmative strategies, but showed no differences in using negative strategies. In temperament, the 3rd graders were higher in Persistence than the 5th graders, the boys were higher in activity and the girls were higher in mood. Temperament of the children had relations with their using alternative problem solving strategies when the target persons were peers or teachers but not mothers. • The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between social cognition (interpersonal problem-solving ability) and social competence. Subjects were 142 male and 148 female fifth graders randomly selected from two elementary schools located in Seoul and their fathers. The children and fathers were administered the Means-Ends Interpersonal Problem-Solving (MEPS) test and the Social Competence Scales based on Choi's inventory(1992). The results indicated significant positive correlations between two subvariables (capability and leadership) of social competence and MEPS. Girls showed significantly higher MEPS scores than boys in the variables of overall problem solving, effective problem solving, and dependent strategy.

  • In Japan, the children with problem behavior have been called the difficult children. However, the definitions of the difficult children in the medical, health, childcare and education are different. As a result, it is difficult to support for the needs of children. In addition, the difficult children have been influenced by the subjectivity of the teachers. IN-Child (Inclusive Needs Child) is defined by the result of this study. IN-Child means "Child in need of inclusive education by a team, including experts. It does not depend on intellectual and developmental delays due to physical, mental, home environment." We developed the IN-Child record that enables the educational diagnosis of IN-Child. IN-Child record was made to organize and analyze of the items by experts including 3 researchers and 2 teachers. As a result, it was classified into two domains of "cause" and "effect". The domain of "cause" is classified by two domains of "physical" and "mental". The domain of effect is classified by two domains of "daily living" and "learning".

  • This qualitative study is designated to explore the reality of social welfare related to the co-occurence of domestic violence and child maltreatment in Korea. "Alone and Together" is elicited as the main theme from the analysis of social workers' experiences with the co-occurence problem in the two fields of domestic violence and child maltreatment. Despite the fact that the social workers are aware of the co-occurence problem embedded in their field cases, they don't assess and intervene with the problem on set purpose. Each field has dealt with the problem according to the field priority for either women or children separately. However, the social workers in the both fields desire alternatives effective for their cooperation and linkage to each other when confronted with the intersection of interdependent needs and problem-solving for the woman and the child. The development of multi-level research, assessment tools, and compulsory education courses for practitioners related to the co-occurence problem is suggested.

  • This study investigated the influence of peer friendliness, conflict, and collaboration on children's problem solving performance. Eighty-two preschool children (41 pairs) filled out the Friendship Assessment Inventory and participated in 3 problem-solving sessions using the Tower of Hanoi. Results showed that just working together does not improve children's problem solving performance. The degree of friendliness children have for each other has a significant effect on their problem solving performance. The children who worked with more friendly peers were more collaborative and were better problem solvers than those who worked with less friendly peers. This study suggests the importance of the relationship between interacting peers on problem solving performance.
