  • The genus Chroomonas is a group of blue-green colored cryptomonads. This study describes two freshwater Chroomonas species for the first time in South Korea: Chroomonas nordstedtii Hansgirg and Chroomonas coerulea (Geitler) Skuja. We examined the morphology and ultrastructure of these species by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. These two Chroomonas species were blue-green colored and ovate to oval-shaped. Chroomonas nordstedtii was characterized by two Maupas ovals with hexagonal periplast plates, whereas C. coerulea was characterized by one eyespot with rectangular periplast plates. A molecular phylogeny with data from nuclear SSU rRNA and chloroplast rbcL genes revealed that Korean C. nordstedtii formed a distinct clade with NIES-708, NIES-1004 from Japan, and UTEX 2779 from Colorado, USA, while C. coerulea formed a clade with ACOI 1366 from Portugal.

  • Past earthquakes experience shows that serious damage or collapse of buildings have dramatically accrued when sufficient separation distance has not been provided between two adjacent structures. The majority of past studies related to the pounding topic indicate that obtaining the gap size between two buildings is able to prevent collision and impact hazards during seismic excitations. Considering minimization of building collisions, some relationships have been suggested to determine the separation distance between adjacent buildings. Commonly, peak lateral displacement, fundamental period and natural damping as well as structural height of two adjacent buildings are numerically considered to determine the critical distance. Hence, the aim of present study is to focus on all mentioned parameters and also utilizing the main characteristic of earthquake record i.e. PGA to examine the lateral displacement of irregular structures close to each other and also estimate the sufficient separation distance between them. Increasing and decreasing the separation distance is inherently caused economical problems due to the land ownership from a legal perspective and pounding hazard as well. Therefore, a new equation is proposed to determine the optimum critical distance. The accuracy of the proposed formula is validated by different models and various earthquake records.

  • The true cuttlefishes genus Sepia (Doratosepion) Linne, 1758, characterized by shell thick, entirely calcareous, shell almost as long as mantle, was collected from the coastal of Dong-Am, Busan, Korea in April, 2004. The specimen agreed closely with description of Sepia (Doratosepion) kobiensis Hoyle, 1885 and S. tokioensis Ortmann, 1888. We herein described the species, being as the first record of S. kobiensis and tokioensis from the region. New Korean names are also provided.

  • Introduction: Capture-recapture methods have been suggested for reducing costs of disease registration as well as reducing bias in incidence estimations. This study aimed to estimate the gastric cancer incidence in the Tehran metropolis population during 2002-2006. Materials and Methods: We investigated new cases of gastric cancer reported by three sources; death certificates, pathology reports, and medical records to Tehran population-based cancer registry during 2002-2006. $G^2$ statistics and the two-source capture-recapture method were used to select the best-fitted log-linear model and to estimate incidence, respectively. EXCEL software version 2007 and SPSS software version 16 were used for this research. Results: The number of reported cases was 4,463, with an average age of 68.5 (${\pm}12.9$) years. We found the model that combined two sources of data including pathology reports and medical records and furthermore complemented by death certificates as the best model. The reported and the estimated incidences were 11.0 and 27.1 per 100,000 respectively. Conclusions: The incidence estimated by two-source capture-recapture method is about three times higher than the incidence reported by the sources under investigation. It is recommended to move towards the implementation of population-based cancer registration using various sources of data collection to achieve more accurate data.

  • In the family Crisiidae (Bryozoa: Cyclostomata), 90 species have been recognized worldwide in seven genera: Bicrisia d'Orbigny, 1853, Crisia Lamouroux, 1812, Crisidia Milne Edwards, 1838, Crisiella Borg, 1924, Crisiona Canu & Bassler, 1928, Filicrisia d'Orbigny, 1853 and Unicrisia d'Orbigny, 1853. Four species in Crisiidae are described from 11 localities from 2008 to 2014, resulting in two new distributional records and two new species in Korea. The new additions to the fauna are: Crisia cuneata Maplestone, 1905, C. elongata Milne Edwards, 1838, C. jejuensis n. sp. and Filicrisia cygnus n. sp. A total of seven Korean crisiids with the addition of four species reported herein are recorded and distributed in three genera: Bicrisia, Crisia and Filicrisia. Accordingly, the Korean cyclostomatous bryozoans come to be 12 species, in eight genera, and five families. All of Korean Crisia eburneodenticulata specimens needed to be reexamined, thus this species is tentatively deleted from the Korean bryozoan fauna.

  • Two scleractinian species are newly recorded in Korea: Leptoseris mycetoseroides Wells, 1954 and Phyllangia hayamaensis (Eguchi, 1968). The two genera Leptoseris Milne Edwards and Haime, 1849 and Phyllangia Milne Edwards and Haime, 1848 are also newly recorded in Korea. The specimens were collected from the subtidal zones of Jeju-do Island, Korea by SCUBA diving from 1991 to 2007. Leptoseris mycetoseroides is characterized by its platelike growth form, intratentacular budding, irregularly developed collines, single styliform columella, and even septa and septocostae. Phyllangia hayamaensis is distinguished by its encrusting and plocoid growth form of corallites basally united with common coenosteum, trabecular columella, and irregular septal arrangements and paliform lobes.

  • During the years of KwangHaeGun, an active public services of building large scale palaces such as reconstruction of ChangDukGung and ChangKyungGung and new construction of InKyungGung and KyungFukGung were carried out. And palaces of Chosun dynasty didn't go much different from those of KwangHaeGun years. By analyzing historical records, ancient maps, palace drawings, architectural forms of ChimJun(寢殿) in InKyungGung(仁慶宮) are examined. ChimJun is sleeping rooms of king and queen. The results are followings: Since Sejong dynasty, functions of king and queen were starting to differentiate, that during the years of KwangHaeGun, two Chimjun(寢殿) were made. ChungWaJun(靑瓦殿) is king's sleeping rooms, located in the west among two, and have a blue tiled roof. KyungSooJun(慶壽澱) is queen's sleeping rooms, located in the east among two. King's ChimJun built on stone pillars, and queen's ChimJun on a wide base as it called Waldae(月臺).
