Wake effects of an upstream bridge on aerodynamic characteristics of a downstream bridge

  • To study the wake influence of an upstream bridge on the wind-resistance performance of a downstream bridge, two adjacent long-span cable-stayed bridges are taken as examples. Based on wind tunnel tests, the static aerodynamic coefficients and the dynamic response of the downstream bridge are measured in the wake of the upstream one. Considering different horizontal and vertical distances, the flutter derivatives of the downstream bridge at different angles of attack are extracted by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and discussed, and the change in critical flutter state is further studied. The results show that a train passing through the downstream bridge could significantly increase the lift coefficient of the bridge which has the same direction with the gravity of the train, leading to possible vertical deformation and vibration. In the wake of the upstream bridge, the change in lift coefficient of the downstream bridge is reduced, but the dynamic response seems to be strong. The effect of aerodynamic interference on flutter stability is related to the horizontal and vertical distances between the two adjacent bridges as well as the attack angle of incoming flow. At large angles of attack, the aerodynamic condition around the downstream girder which may drive the bridge to torsional flutter instability is weakened by the wake of the upstream bridge, and the critical flutter wind speed increases at this situation.

  • To compare on the accuracy of bridge made by various soldering technics, four unit bridges were made on a blass original model. They were soldered to each other in the following three ways : In Group I, one central gap between two pieces of pre-soldered abutments and adjacent pontics were soldered at the final step. In Group II, the two gaps between one piece of pre-soldered pontics and two abutments were soldered at the final step. In Group III. the three gaps between two abutments and two ponitcs were soldered at the same time. Misfitting of those bridges were compared by measuring the spaces created between the retainer margins and the shoulders of preparated original model with a micrometer microscope. The author obtained following results : In the final step, the more number of the soldered gap increased, the more accuracy of the bridge decreased.

  • Dynamic response behaviors of a bridge are examined under seismic excitations in the 2-dimensional directions are examined. A three-dimensional mechanical model is utilized and the corresponding equations of motions are derived to consider the two directional bridge motions due to the randomness residing in the excitation directions. The arbitrary 2-dimensional directions are simulated by applying two independent excitations in the two directions: main direction(longitudinal) ; the additive direction normal to the main (transverse). The rotational superstructure motions due to the spacial motions of the bridge are considered by admitting the deformation of the bearings at supports. The relative displacement to the ground motions and the relative distance between adjacent oscillators are found to be increased by a considerable amount in the case when considering arbitrary directional seismic excitations. It is also found that the piermotions show more complicated behaviors due to the arbitrary seismic directions.

상악측절치 수복을 위한 Cantilever bridge (STRESS ANALYSIS ON THE ALVEOLAR BONE OF CANTILEVER BRIDGES REPLACING MAXILLARY LATERAL INCISOR)

  • The purpose of this study was to analysis the stress distribution induced by three unit PFM bridges and various cantilever bridges replacing maxillary latersal incisor. The simplified two-dimensional photoelastic models used for this study was contructed in the folio- wing way. CR/R ratio was designed to be 1 : 1, 1 : 1.25 and 1 : 1.5. The pontics of cantilever bridge supported by maxillary canines consisted of wrap-around type, rest-extension type, and simple type. 3-unit PFM bridge was constructed with traditional method. 1kg vertical static load was applied on the center of the incisal edge of the pontic. The stress pattern was examined and recorded by photography. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. The magnitude of stress on the abutment root apex area of a traditional 3-unit bridge was the lowest. 2. The model of cantilevered pontic with a rest showed the relatively well distributed stress around the abutment tooth. The model with simple pontic generated the greatest stress concentration in the supporting structure of the abutment tooth. 3. As the height of bone level reduced, the rotational and vertical force increased around the abutment tooth. 4. The stress concentration of the 3-unit bridges occured on the root apex and stress concentration of the cantilever briage occured on the root apex and cervix area, 5. In the case of the cantilever bridge, stress concentrated distally on the root apex area of the abutment tooth and additional stress was observed mesially on the upper part of the root. Especially in the case of the simple pontic, was phenomenon was more apparent than the others. 6. Force applied to cantilevered pontic was transmitted to the adjacent central incisor through the contact surface. Stress was markedly observed on the mesial cervix area in the case of simple pontic and on the root apex area in the case of wrap-around type and rest-extension type.

Influence of [VO4]3- Bridges on Magnetic Coupling in Ba2V3O9 Studied by Molecular Orbital Calculations

  • A molecular orbital study is presented of the magnetic coupling in the one-dimensional vanadium oxide $Ba_2V_3O_9$ with a bridge formed by two different types of $VO_4$ tetrahedra. The concept of complementary versus counter-complementary effect has been used to explain the structural origin of the magnetic behavior of the compound. Namely, the observed antiferromagnetic coupling is dominated by the orbital complementarity of the V(1) tetrahedra sharing only one oxygen corner with two adjacent $VO_6$ octahedra. The second type of V(2) tetrahedra does not provide a noticeable contribution to the magnetic coupling due to the orbital counter-complementarity of the bridging ligand.

  • Statement of problem. More than 70% of patients who need the implant supported restoration are parially edentulous. The principles of design for implant supported fixed partial denture in mandibular posterior region are many and varied. Jurisdiction for their use is usually based on clinical evaluation. There are several areas or interest regarding the design of implant supported fixed partial denture in mandibular posterior region. 1) Straight and tripod configuration in implant placement, 2) Two restoration types such as individualized and splinted restorations. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to compare the amount and distribution of stress around the implant fixtures placed in the mandibular posterior region with two different arrangements and to evaluate the effects of splinting using the photoelastic stress analysis. Material & methods. 1) Production of study model: Mandibular partially edentulous model was waxed-up and duplicated with silicone and two models were poured in stone. 2) Fixture installation and photoelastic model construction: Using surveyor(Ney, USh), 3 fixtures(two 4.0 $\times$13 mm, one 5.0$\times$10 mm, Lifecore, USA) were insta)led in straight & tripod configurations. Silicone molds were made and poured in photoelastic resin (PL-2. Measurements group, USA). 3) Prostheses construction: Four 3-unit bridges (Type III gold alloy, Dongmyung co., Korea) were produced with nonhexed and hexed UCLA abutments and fitted with conventional methods. The abutments were tightened with 30 Ncm torque and the static loads were applied at 12 points of the occlusal surface. 4) Photoelastic stress analysis : The polarizer analyzer system with digital camera(S-2 Pro, Fujifilm, Japan) was used to take the photoelastic fringes and analysed using computer analysis program. Results. Solitary hexed UCLA restoration developed different stress patterns between two implant arrangement configurations, but there were no stress transfer to adjacent implants from the loaded implant in both configurations. However splinted restorations showed lesser amount of stresses in the loaded implants and showed stress transfer to adjacent implants in both configurations. Solitary hexed UCLA restoration with tripod configuration developed higher stresses in anterior and middle implants under loading than implants with straight configurations. Splintied 3 unit fixed partial dentures with tripod configuration showed higher stress development in posterior implant under loading but there were no obvious differences between two configurations. Conclusions. The tripod configuration of implant arrangement didn't show any advantages over the straight configuration. Splinting of 3 unit bridges with nonhexed UCLA abutments showed less stress development around the fixtures. Solitary hexed UCLA restoration developed tilting of implant fixture under offset loads.

Optimization of Sky-Bridge location at coupled high-rise buildings considering seismic vulnerability functions

  • Sky-bridges between adjacent buildings can enhance lateral stiffness and limit the impact of lateral forces. This study analysed the structural capabilities and dynamic performances of sky-bridge-coupled buildings under various sets of ground motions. Finite Element (FE) analyses were carried out with the link being iteratively repositioned along the full height of the structures. Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) and probabilistic damage distribution were also applied. The results indicated that the establishment of sky-bridges caused a slight change in the natural frequency and mode shapes. The sky-bridge system was shown to be efficient in controlling displacement and Inter-Storey Drift Ratio (%ISDR) and reducing the probability of damage in the higher floors. The most efficient location of the sky-bridge, for improving its rigidity, was found to be at 88% of the building height. Finally, the effects of two types of materials (steel and concrete) and end conditions (hinged and fixed) were studied. The outcomes showed that coupled buildings with a sky-bridge made of steel with hinged connection could withstand ground motions longer than those made of concrete with fixed connection.

공동주택 외피의 열교영향을 고려한 상당열관류율 및 연간 에너지소비성능 평가 연구 (A study on the annual energy performance of apartment building with the equivalent U-value of envelope considering the effect of thermal bridges)

  • The building envelope is important specially for saving energy consumption of residential buildings. but Apartment houses in Korea commonly have inside insulation system which have constantly arisen thermal bridges, the risk of heat loss, as a necessity. This study aims to evaluate integrated insulation performance according to the different shapes of external walls, adjacent to windows. The thermal performance analysis was carried out by Equivalent U-value and using the three-dimensional heat transfer computer simulation (TRISCO-RADCON), under nine different cases of comparing among three each of different bases(current standard model, 30percent energy saving model and 60percent energy saving model). The heating and the cooling load were also compared between two cases (standard U-value and Equivalent U-value) of three each of different bases, using the Building energy simulation which is based on DOE-2.1 analysis. As results, it turns out that if the Equivalent U-value is considered on the envelope analysis, the heat flow loss will be increasing more than the standard U-value, and if heat insulation property of the residential building reinforced rather than current, the rate of influences on the thermal bridges would be extremely expanded. In addition, it is shown that annual heating loads of the apartment house with applied Equivalent U-value substantially increased by more than 15 percent compared to those with the existing U-value, but annual cooling loads were negligibly affected.

  • The current study is a part of series o research about the development of new superstructure system to overcome the engineering problems in the design of bridges of 30m to 45m in span length using the existing bridge systems. The basic concept of new system is the continuation of adjacent tow simple spans composed of the precast prestressed concrete U-type sections. The partial post tensioning method is applied to create the continuity. In this study, the new technique was introduced and applied with an example design of tow span of 40m in span length to find the possibility for practical application as the feasibility study. The obtained results show that the new splicing method is expected to offer significant economical and serviceability advantages.

단면회전방법을 적용한 강합성 소수주거더 개발 및 실험적 성능 평가 (Development and Experimental Performance Evaluation of Steel Composite Girder by Turn Over Process)

  • 현재 국내에서 설계되고 있는 40~70 m 지간의 강도로교 90% 이상이 박스거더교 형식이며 박스거더교는 휨 강성과 비틀림 강성이 뛰어나 장경간이나 곡선을 갖는 교량 형식으로 적합할 뿐만 아니라 가설현장에서의 작업을 최소화 할 수 있어 현장 안전관리 면에서도 유리한 구조형식이다. 그러나 박스거더는 상하 플랜지와 복부판이 수직, 수평보강재로 보강되는 구조로 부재량과 용접량이 많이 소요되어 비경제적인 교량 형식으로 많이 지적되어 왔다. 따라서, 미국이나 일본에서는 상대적으로 부부재를 줄일 수 있는 보다 경제적인 플레이트거더교가 일반적으로 적용되고 있다. 이러한 플레이트거더교의 한 형식인 소수주거더교는 강합성교량의 합리화를 위해 많이 채용되는 형식으로, 주거더 간격을 종래의 3 m 정도에서 2배 정도인 6 m 이상으로 증가하여 주거더의 개수를 최소화시키는 경제적인 교량형식이다. 또한, 거더 단면의 단순화를 위하여 거더의 복부판에 부착되는 수평보강재와 수직보강재를 최대한 생략할 수 있다. 2주거더교는 소수주거더교의 대표적인 형식으로, 유효폭 10 m 전후의 교량에 적합하여 프랑스를 중심으로 유럽에서는 1960년대부터 본격적으로 개발되어왔다. 국내에서는 소수주거더교 적용시 안전율 확보를 위해 유럽이나 일본 등에 비해 많은 강재량을 사용하고 있으며, 설계자들의 친밀도 부족과 박스거더교에 비해 복잡한 설계 등과 같은 여러가지 실무적용 차원에서 적용이 제한되고 있는 실정이다. 이 연구에서는 합리화 강교량 형식인 소수주거더교의 제작방법을 개선하고 구속콘크리트를 활용하여 강교량에서 공사비와 직결되는 강중을 줄일 수 있는 신형식 강합성거더(Turn Over Composite Girder) 구조형식을 제안하고자 한다. 또한 실물 크기인 20 m 단면회전방법을 적용한 강합성 거더시험체 및 교량시험체를 제작하여 제작성을 평가하고 구조성능 실험을 하여 구조안전성을 평가하였다.
