  • Partial quenching structure of turbulent diffusion flames in a turbulent mixing layer is investigated by the method of flame hole dynamics to develope a prediction model for the turbulent lift off. The present study is specifically aimed to remedy the problem of the stiff transition of the conditioned partial burning probability across the crossover condition by adopting level-set method which describes propagating or retreating flame front with specified propagation speed. In light of the level-set simulations with two model problems for the propagation speed, the stabilizing conditions for a turbulent lifted flame are suggested. The flame hole dynamics combined with level-set method yields a temporally evolving turbulent extinction process and its partial quenching characteristics is compared with the results of the previous model employing the flame-hole random walk mapping. The probability to encounter reacting' state, conditioned with scalar dissipation rate, demonstrated that the conditional probability has a rather gradual transition across the crossover scalar dissipation rate in contrast to the stiff transition of resulted from the flame-hole random walk mapping and could be attributed to the finite response of the flame edge propagation.

  • Partial quenching structure of turbulent diffusion flames in a turbulent mixing layer is investigated by the method of flame hole dynamics in order to develop a prediction model for turbulent flame lift off. The essence of flame hole dynamics is derivation of the random walk mapping, from the flame-edge theory, which governs expansion or contraction of flame holes initially created by local quenching events. The numerical simulation for flame hole dynamics is carried out in two stages. First, a direct numerical simulation is performed for constant-density fuel-air channel mixing layer to obtain the turbulent flow and mixing fields, from which a time series of two dimensional scalar dissipation rate array is extracted at a fixed virtual flame surface horizontally extending from the end of split plate to the downstream. Then, the Lagrangian simulation of the flame hole random walk mapping projected to the scalar dissipation rate array yields temporally evolving turbulent extinction process and its statistics on partial quenching characteristics. The statistical results exhibit that the chance of partial quenching is strongly influenced by the crossover scalar dissipation rate while almost unaffected by the iteration number of the mapping that can be regarded as a flame-edge speed.

  • A second-order conditional moment closure(CMC) model is applied to the prediction of local extinction in a turbulent hydrocarbon diffusion flame and compared with direct numerical simulation(DNS) results for the flame. Combustion of a hydrocarbon fuel is described by a simple two-step mechanism. A second-order correction for conditional mean reaction rate terms is made by the assumed pdf method. The results show that the second-order closure is necessary for accurate prediction of intermediate species, while first-order CMC gives good predictions for fuel, oxidant, product and temperature. Conditional variances and covariances are well predicted during an extinction process while they are overpredicted during a reignition process.

  • In order to investigate the soot formation and oxidation processes, we employed the two variable approach and its source terms representing soot nucleation, coagulation, surface growth and oxidation. For the simulation of the taxi-symmetric turbulent reacting flows, the pressure-velocity coupling is handled by the pressure based finite volume method. We also employed laminar flamelet model to calculate the thermo-chemical properties and the proper soot source terms from the information of detailed chemical kinetic model. The numerical and physical models used in this study successfully predict the essential features of the combustion processes and soot formation characteristics in the reacting flow field.

  • The purpose of study is to investigate the flame stability and structure of turbulent diffusion flame behind the hollowed flame holder, which is located on the waste gas coming out from the test furnace. PDFs and Power Spectra technique of fluctuating temperature and ion current measurement were needed for this purpose. We discussed that the three types of stabilized flames were found as the result of post study. In this paper, we established the stability mechanism near the flame holder.

  • A numerical study has been conducted to investigate the effect of shock waves on the mixing and the recirculation zone of a hydrogen jet diffusion flame in a supersonic combustor. The general trends are compared with the experimental results obtained from the supersonic combustor at the University of Michigan. For the numerical simulation of supersonic diffusion flames, multi-species Navier-Stokes equations and detailed chemistry reaction equations of $H_2$-Air are considered. The $K-{\omega}/k-{\varepsilon}$ blended two equation turbulent model is used. Roe's FDS method and MUSCL method are used for convection fluxes in governing equations. Numerical results show that when slender wedges are mounted at the combustor wall the mixing and the combustion are enhanced and the size of recirculation zone is increased . The flame shape of supersonic flames is different in the flame-tip; it is not closed but open. The flame shape is shown to be greatly affected by shock waves.

  • Combustion noise involved with chemical heat release and turbulent process in turbopropulsion systems, gasturbine, industrial furnaces and internal engines is indeed noisy. The experimental study reported in this paper is made to identify a dominant combustion noise in jet flames. Gaseous propane and kerosene fuel have been used with air as the oxidizer in a different jet combustion systems. Combustion and aerodynamic noise are studied through far field sound pressure measurements in an anechoic chamber. And also mean temperature and velocities and turbulent intensities of both isothermal and reacting flow fields were measured. It is shown that axial mean velocity of reacting flow fields is higher about 1 to 3m/sec than that of cold flow in a gaseous combustor. As the gaseous fuel flow rate increases, the acoustic power increases. But the sound pressure level for the spray flame decreases with increasing equivalence ratio. The influence of temperature in the combustion fields due to chemical heat release has been observed to be a dominant noise source in the spray flame. The spectra of combustion noise in gaseous propane and kerosene jet flame show a predominantly low frequency and a broadband nature as compared with the noise characteristics in an isothermal air jet.

  • Partial quenching structure of diffusion flames in a turbulent mixing layer has been investigated by the method of flame hole dynamics in oder to develope a prediction model for the phenomenon of turbulent flame lift off. The present study is specifically aimed to remedy the shortcoming of the stiff transition of the conditioned partial burning probability across the crossover condition by employing the level-set method which enables us to include the effect of finite flame edge propagation speed. In light of the level-set simulation results with two models for the edge propagation speed, the stabilizing conditions for turbulent lifted flame are suggested. The flame hole dynamics combined with the level-set method yields a temporally evolving turbulent extinction process and its partial quenching characteristics is compared with the results of the previous model employing the flame-hole random walk mapping based on three critical scalar dissipation rates. The probability to encounter reacting state, conditioned with scalar dissipation rate, demonstrated that the conditional probability has a rather gradual transition across the crossover scalar dissipation rate. Such a smooth transition is attributed to the finite response of the flame edge propagation.

  • Propane coflow diffusion flames have been experimentally studied to investigate the liftoff and reattachment characteristics. Flame properties such as velocity and density distribution were measured by LDV and shadowgraphy, respectively. It is shown that as the velocity of coflowing air increases, liftoff velocity decreases nonlinearly in turbulent jets and linearly in laminar jets, while reattachment velocity decreases nonlinearly. Meanwhile, as inner nozzle tip thickness increases, liftoff velocity increases with the reattachment velocity nearly unchanged. Liftoff phenomena in these flames can be categorized into three classes as a function of coflow velocity, such as laminar liftoff, turbulent liftoff, and transient liftoff.
