A study on behavioral characteristics of concrete lining based on the equations of relaxed rock loads (이완하중 산정식에 따른 콘크리트라이닝 거동특성에 관한 연구)

  • A concrete lining of NATM tunnel had been considered as interior materials. But recently we consider it as structural materials. Therefore we must consider various loads. Relaxed rock load is a main load which decides thickness and reinforcement presence of concrete lining. In practice conservatively, Terzaghi's rock load theory has been accepted to estimate relaxed rock loads in urban subway tunnel design. This study investigates the equations of relaxed rock loads used in the design of NATM concrete lining. Structural analysis are executed based on various equations of relaxed rock loads, and concrete lining forces are compared.

Concrete Lining Behaviors of Subway Tunnels according to Temperature Variations (온도변화에 따른 지하철 터널의 콘크리트 라이닝 거동)

  • In this study, the behavior of urban subway tunnels is measured using instrumentation sensors installed in the lining concrete inside subway tunnels in order to analyze their behavior according to temperature variations. It is observed that the stresses of the concrete lining, tunnel convergence, and cracks change according to the temperature variations. However, the crack deformation differs depending on the size and status of the crack. In addition, this study proposes a correction formula for the lining stress and tunnel convergence through numerical analyses of the concrete lining according to the temperature variations. The results of this research can be used in the tunnel maintenance considering the tunnel behavior depending on the temperature variations in the tunnel.

  • In case of the drainage type tunnel, the residual water pressure is likely to act on the tunnel lining due to the decrease of water-passing capacity of the filter material. Therefore, this study discussions a method to predict the lining load with the consideration of water passing capacity of the filter material through the literature review and numerical analysis. It is expected from the results of case studies that the design load acting on the concrete lining in the drainage type tunnel could be assumed to be about 50% of the hydrostatic water pressure in steady-state ground-water condition.

Design of the reinforced concrete lining in bakun diversion tunnels (말레이지아 바쿤 가배수로 터널의 철근콘크리트 라이닝 설계)

  • The completion of the Bakun Diversion Tunnel is subsequently to the Main Dam construction. Therefore, the completion date is very important for the Bakun Hydroelectric Project. Generally, the tunnel lining work as a finishing phase of the tunnelling project occupies a important portion as well as an excavation and a support work of the tunnels in respect to the construction cost and period. Internal section of Bakun Diversion Tunnel is designed circular shape to reduce the roughness of the water flow with 12 meters in diameter of total length 4314.6 meters of 3 tunnels. The lining thickness is varied between 500 mm and 700 mm depending on the structural condition. From the original Tender design of the Bakun tunnels, the required quantity of steel bars was 5,985 ton designed by Reinforced Concrete (RC) through the entire tunnel linings. During the detail design stage by the consideration of the rock conditions and various load conditions, we could suggest five kinds of RC lining type including plain concrete lining type. Through the detail design modification, we could reduce the required amount of steel bars to 2,178 ton, as a half of original Bill of Quantity. Finally, this design modification give us the time and cost saving effect to catch up the construction progress in time.

A study on the treatment of external water pressure for the water pressure tunnel at the structural analysis of concrete lining (압력도수터널 콘크리트 라이닝 구조 계산시 외수압 처리에 관한 연구)

  • When the structural analysis is performed for the concrete lining of the water pressure tunnel, many parameters are considered such as relaxed ground loads, internal water pressure, external water pressure, the shrinkage of the concrete lining, grouting pressure, etc. But, there are no standards and manuals for the structural analysis for the concrete lining of the water pressure tunnel. Above all, the external water pressure has an much effect on the stability of tunnel. So, in case that permeability of ground is large, the external water pressure should be decreased by installation of weep hole, or reinforced ground by ground improvement grouting should be pressed by the external water pressure instead. But, when weep hole is installed to reduce the external water pressure, the many problems may me occurred. Thus, reasonable approach for treatment of the external water pressure is necessary if weep hole is not installed. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze design cases and studies for treatment of the external water pressure in performing structural analysis for the concrete lining of the water pressure tunnel, and to find reasonable method for tunnel lining modeling which is the treatment of the external water pressure according to permeability of ground and consequently the design of ground improvement grouting.

The Application of Hydration Heat to Form Removal of Lining Concrete in Tunnel (수화열을 고려한 터널 라이닝 콘크리트 거푸집 탈형)

  • The strength level for removal of lining concrete in tunnel is increased from 2.94MPa to 4.9MPa in 2004. This result in the increase of concrete curing time, and construction time would be delayed. In this study, in order to improve the efficiency of construction cycle and satisfy the strength criterion, a curing method is adopted, which is considering the hydration heat in the lining concrete member. As a result, it is shown that the concrete curing time for form removal is about 20hrs without the adjustment of concrete mix design. And construction cycle time is not changed compared to that before the change of strength criterion.

A Case Study on Deformation Conditions and Reinforcement Method of Cavity behind the Lining of Domestic Old Tunnel (국내 재래식 터널의 변상현황과 배면공동 보강 사례연구)

  • In this study, the whole deformation conditions of domestic old tunnels and reinforcement methods for deformation tunnels were investigated and analysed, and the present conditions, occurrence cause and reinforcement methods of cavity behind the tunnel lining were investigated and analysed comprehensively. The deformation causes of domestic old tunnels could be classified in three kinds : change of earth pressure operating tunnel ground, material problem of concrete lining, mistake of design and construction. As a result of analysis, the tunnel deformation was occurred by not specific cause but various cause As a result of investigation for 455 domestic tunnel data, more than 70% of the tunnel deformation was related to leakage and the other deformation cause also accompanied leakage mostly. An applied reinforcement method was related to leakage and flood prevention measures, but application of reinforcement method for boundary area between tunnel and ground and tunnel periphery which influence on the tunnel stability was still defective. The cavity of domestic old tunnel occupied about 16% of the total tunnel length and about 68% of cavity was located in the crown of tunnel, and besides, the occurrence cause of cavity was analysed to design, construction and management cause. The filling method for cavity using filling material was comprehensively appling to cavity behind tunnel lining.

Investigation of the Lining Load Induced by Backfill and Consolidation Grouting (배면 및 압밀그라우팅에 의한 터널 라이닝 하중 연구)

  • Backfill grouting and consolidation grouting are major reinforcing methods that enhance the stability of tunnel by filling the gap between the tunnel lining and the ground and increasing the stiffness of the ground. However, the effect of the grouting on the tunnel lining is not well established. Field measurements such as pressuremeter test, Lugeon test, and lining instruments were peformed to analyze the grouting effect on the tunnel lining for a waterway tunnel. The elastic modulus was increased up to 5 times than that of original rock mass due to consolidation grouting. This study shows that only 10% of grout pressure was acting on the back face of the tunnel lining. The final results are expected to be used for the design of the concrete lining.

The ultimate bearing capacity of rectangular tunnel lining assembled by composite segments: An experimental investigation

  • In this paper, full-scale loading tests were performed on a rectangular segmental tunnel lining, which was assembled by steel composite segments, to investigate its load-bearing structural behavior and failure mechanism. The tests were also used to confirm the composite effect by adding concrete inside to satisfy the required performance under severe loading conditions. The design of the tested rectangular segmental lining and the loading scheme are also described to better understand the bearing capacity of this composite lining structure. It is found that the structural ultimate bearing capacity is governed by the bond capacity between steel plates and the tunnel segment. The failure of the strengthened lining is the consequence of local failure of the bond at waist joints. This led to a fast decrease of the overall stiffness and eventually a loss of the structural integrity.
