  • The purpose of this study is to present an analysis method for the prediction of the changes m ground conditions. To this end, three dimensional convergence displacements are analyzed in several ways to estimate the trend of displacement changes. Three-dimensional arching effect is occurred around the unsupported excavation surface including tunnel face when a tunnel is excavated in a stable rock mass. If the ground condition ahead of tunnel face changes or a weak zone exists, a diagnostic trend of displacement change is observed by the 3 dimensional measurement and numerical analysis. Therefore, the change of ground condition and the existence of a weak zone ahead of tunnel face can be predicted by monitoring 3-dimensional absolute displacements during excavation, and applying the methodology (the ratio of L/C, $C/C_o$, etc.) presented in this study.

  • The introduction of geodetic methods of absolute displacement monitoring in tunnels has significantly improved the value of the measurements. Structurally controlled behavior and influences of an anisotropic rock mass can be determined, and the excavation and support adjusted accordingly. Three-dimensional finite element simulations of different weakness zone properties, thicknesses, and orientations relative to the tunnel axis were carried out and the function parameters were evaluated from the results. The results were compared to monitoring results from Alpine tunnels in heterogeneous rock. The good qualitative correlation between trends observed on site and numerical results gives hope that by a routine determination of the function parameters during excavation the prediction of rock mass conditions ahead of the tunnel face can be improved. Implementing the rules developed from experience and simulations into the monitoring data evaluation program allows to automatically issuing information on the expected rock mass quality ahead of the tunnel.

  • The 3D absolute displacement monitoring system has been developed to analyze the tunnel convergence measured under construction of underground structures and to manage effectively the measured data. The system is comprised of the total station, the anchor-typed target pin and the 3D absolute displacement measurement and management program. In this paper, the types and specifications of the 3D total station were presented. The anchor-typed target pin, an improved model of traditional one, was developed and its sightable distance and measurement accuracy were checked by field tests. Also a 3D absolute displacement measurement and management program, TEMS 3D, was developed to provide some analysis tools including the trend and influence lines. L/C ratio, S/C ratio and the like. The developed system was applied the construction stage of a railway tunnel for testing purpose. It is verified that the developed system is capable of predicting weak zones ahead of tunnel face by comparing with results of TSP (Tunnel Seismic Prediction) survey.

  • According to recent data from the Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA), the frequency of typhoons around the Korea Peninsula is almost unchanged, but the intensity is on the rise due to climate change. A typhoon that has become so powerful can cause partial or complete damage to the traffic signal structures, limiting the operation of the vehicle and causing traffic congestion. If the traffic signal structure fails to function properly due to the influence of the typhoon, not only the v ehicle operation will be disrupted, but also direct damage to the traffic signal structure will occur. In addition, if the social overhead cost of traffic congestion is included, the recovery cost caused by the typhoon will increase to an extent that it is difficult to estimate. Therefore, in this study, a wind tunnel experiment was performed by producing a wind tunnel model of an existing fixed traffic signal structure and a traffic signal structure in which signs and traffic lights are hinged. Also, The fixed and hinge structures were modeled as 3D finite elements, and wind-resistant analysis was performed by wind speed, and, wind-resistant safety of traffic signal structures were analyzed and examined through wind-resistant analyses. From the comparative analysis of the results of experiment and FE analysis, it was known that the stress reduction rate of the hinge connection structure was at least 30% compared to that of the fixed connection structure from the results of the wind tunnel experiment and FE analysis. And As a result of finite element analysis for the maximum design wind speed of 50m/s, it was found that the maximum stress generated in the existing structure exceeded all the yield stress, but the maximum stress of the hinge connection structure was within the yield stress. Finally The hinge connection structure showed a relatively large stress reduction rate as the wind speed increased and the length of the lateral beam was shorter at the same wind speed.

  • Background: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of mechanical traction therapy on pain, symptom severity, and functional status in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. Design: Randomized controlled trial study. Methods: The 24 participants in this study were randomly assigned to either the Mechanical traction therapy (MTT) group (n=12) or the placebo group (n=12). Both groups performed tendon and neural gliding exercise. Both groups underwent mechanical traction therapy with their forearms placed on a traction device. However, in the placebo group, the device was turned off, and a placebo treatment was administered without any mechanical stimulation. All the participants underwent 18 sessions of intervention (10 minutes, 3 days per week for 6 weeks). Both groups were assessed for pain using the numerical pain rating scale and for symptom severity and functional status using the Boston Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire (BCTQ), which includes two additional scales: the Boston Symptom Severity Scale (BSSS) and the Boston Functional Status Scale (BFSS). Results: The muscle activation, pain, symptom severity, and functional status in the MTT group were significantly improved compared to the placebo group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that traction therapy combined with tendon and neural gliding exercise. are a beneficial method for improving pain, symptom severity, and functional status in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.

  • The behavior of an opening and the performance of support system depend upon the load-deformation characteristics of ground and support as well as of the manner and of timing of support installation. The load-deformation characteristics of ground and support are derived by the interaction between ground and support. The interaction between ground and support is qualitatively illustrated by a ground response curve. The behavior of an opening and the performance of support system depend upon the load-deformation characteristics of ground and support as well as of the manner and of timing of support installation. The interaction between ground and support is qualitatively illustrated by a ground response curve. The convergence-confinement method don't need the basic assumptions for a mathematical model. Also This is applicable to general tunnel. Consequently the stability of tunnel must be qualitatively investigated by a ground response curve and quantitatively adjudged by a numerical analysis for the reasonable design of tunnel.

  • Traffic accidents in tunnel can lead to large traffic accidents due to narrow and dark road characteristics. Therefore, special care of the driver is required when is driving in a tunnel. However, accidents can happen at any time. In the event of an accident, a narrow road structure may lead to a second accident. Therefore, all facilities installed inside the tunnel should be allowed to minimize damage in the event of an accident. We confirmed the safety of the collision target through the action of the sedan, Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and truck when the vehicle crashed into a stairway installed on the tunnel emergency escape route, and when a concrete barrier or guard rail was installed in front of the stairway. The behavior of the vehicle has resulted in a total of three results: rollover or rollover, change of speed and angle of the vehicle after collision. The sedan and SUV were the most secure when colliding with the guardrail, but considering the truck as a whole, concrete barriers were judged to be the most suitable for minimizing damage from the first accident and reducing the risk of the second accident.

  • The backlayer phenomena of smoke in the road tunnel is evaluated through numerical experiments. A commercial code, PHOENICS is used to simulate smoke flow in the road tunnel. The independent and dependent variables are ventilation air velocity and the length of backlayer of smoke respectively. Hybrid scheme and $textsc{k}-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is adopted in the simulation process and mass residual is used as a convergence criterion. The experimental results say that the length of backlayer is reduced linearly with the increase of ventilating air velocity and that there is a critical air velocity which prevents from the onset of backlayering phenomena. One finds that there is a fresh air region near the bottom of tunnel which could make the passenger escape from the region polluted by smoke. These phenomena come from the severe vertical stratification of the smoke air mixture in the tunnel.

  • This article is to apply the tunnel support system selected after comparatively analyzing of RMR and tunnel instrumentation between the tunnel behavior characteristic predicted through geotechnical investigations and the numerical analysis at the design stage and the properties deformation occurred at the construction stage. This attempt results from the behavior characteristic of the tunnel excavation ground shown differently in accordance with the ground quality and reinforcement method. This, therefore, provide the data and results analysed the actual decision RMR-crown settlement & convergence and reduction of material property of ground as parameters. Also, it's shown that the tunnel designer is able to predict tunnel behavior characteristic when designing in bedrock areas excessively distributed faults and fractured zones.

  • It was difficult to apply conventional excavation methods in some sections from Seoul to Pusan high speed rail road construction of 1 lot 2, due to highway concrete road, gas pipe, water pipe and nearby factories with automatic control system machine. To excavate safely and efficiently in these sections new blast patterns were employed within allowable blast vibration level, by test blast and controlled vibration by sequential blast. Behaviors of the rock mass including convergence and displacement around tunnel were measured with construction works and the crack width in concrete wall was also monitored for controlling allowable limits. The results can be summarized as follow : 1. The allowable blast vibration level in structure site is less 1.0cm/sec for highway concrete, 0.5 cm/sec for gas pipe, water pipe and building housing and 0.3 cm/sec for automatic control system machine. 2. The convergence displacement, single rod extensometer and multi rod extensometer around tunnel and cracks in concrete wall were measured, it was confirmed that the measured values were converged within allowable level. 3. The empirical formular of ground vibrations with 90% confidence lines for PD-3 was given as follow. $$V_{90%}=45.549({\frac{D}{\sqrt{W}}})^{-1.353}$$
