Propionibacterium acnes have been recognized as pus-forming bacteria triggering an inflammation in acne. The present study was conducted to evaluate antimicrobial activities of Dryopteris crassirhizoma Nakai against these etiologic agents of acne vulgaris and application possibility as a cosmetic resource. D. crassirhizoma crude extract and hexane fraction was prepared and its anti-acne effect against Propionibacterium acnes was investigated with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and paper disk diffusion method. The MIC of D. crassirhizoma crude extract and hexane fraction was 0.008 mg/mL and 0.001 mg/mL, respectively. This implies that D. crassirhizoma extract may be an efficient anti-acne ingredient for cosmetics, as a crude extract. The paper disk diffusion assay showed that its anti-acne effect was similar to that of triclosan. The cytotoxic effect of D. crassirhizoma extract was determined by a colorimetric MTT assay using HaCaT cell line and D. crassirhizoma extract exhibited lower cytotoxic effects. Finally, we examine the stability of D. crassirhizoma extract to temperature and pH. The D. crassirhizoma extract was very stable to high temperatures ($25{\sim}121^{\circ}C$) and to wide pH range ($pH\; 2{\sim}11$), suggesting its utilization for cosmetics.

Personal care products are a diverse group of synthetic organic chemicals such as antimicrobial compounds, UV filters and organo-phosphate flame retardants and derived from individual usages of soaps, toothpaste and cosmetics. It has been detected in municipal sewage effluent and various environmental samples such as surface water, marine, soil, sediment and aquatic biota in many countries. The occurrence of personal care products in environmental samples could negatively impact the health of the ecosystem and humans, due to persistent, long-term chronic exposure of aquatic organisms. In this study, fifteen personal care products in aquatic environmental samples were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with liquidliquid extraction (LLE). Method detection limits were in the range of $0.004\sim0.273\;{\mu}g/L$. Two compounds (TCEP, TCPP) were detected in surface waters and seven compounds (triclosan, 4-MBC, EHMC, BP-3, TCEP, TPP, TBEP) were detected in sewage treatment plants (STP) influents or effluents.
This study was carried out to evaluate antimicrobial effects of a mixture of resin fractionated ethanol extract of Eucalyptus globulus, Yucca recurvifolia, and tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia). The plant fraction mixture showed low minimum inhibitory concentration (0.24~3.32 mg/ml) against several bacteria and yeast that usually used as the target skin microbes in a cosmetic industry, and it was more effective than antibiotics, triclosan and ampicillin. In a time-kill assay the plant fraction mixture reduced more than 92% of microbial populations during 4 h, and significantly increased leakage of nucleotides from all microorganisms tested. Antimicrobial effect of the plant fraction mixture was not affected by divalent cation ($Mg^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$). These results suggest that the fraction mixture of ethanol extracts of E. globulus, Y. recurvifolia, and M. alternifolia may be utilized as an efficient preservative in cosmetics to prevent contamination by human skin microbes.
The purpose of this study was to investigate present status of use about antimicrobial agent (triclosan, ethanol) and preservatives (sodium benzoate, methyl p-hydroxybenzoate, propyl p-hydroxybenzoate) in dentifrice. 75 samples including 16 mouthwashes were analyzed in this study. Contents of triclosan and preservatives were analyzed using by HPLC and ethanol was analyzed by headspace-GC. Preservatives were detected from total 37 samples, which are suitable for the legal limits in Korea. Methyl p-hydroxybenzoate was detected from 26 samples (0.003~0.19%), propyl p-hydroxybenzoate was detected from 11 samples (0.002~0.02%) and sodium benzoate was detected from 14 samples (0.1~0.3%), respectively. Methyl p-hydroxybenzoate was detected from 6 samples (0.03~0.19%), propyl p-hydroxybenzoate was detected from 1 samples (0.01%) and sodium benzoate was detected form 5 samples (0.1~0.2%) in 20 dentifrice for children. Triclosan was not detected from 75 samples. Ethanol was detected from 16 samples (4.9~21.9%) in 19 samples; among them three samples showed the higher contents (20.5~21.9%) but ethanol contents was not labeled in these samples.

The preparation, characterization, and bio-testing of biocide incorporated silicone coatings for marine applications have been conducted. Derivatives of the biocide, Triclosan (5-chloro-2-(2, 4-dichlorophenoxy) phenol), were used to covalently attach the biocide moiety to a silicone backbone. The synthetic process allowed for control of the resulting coating's mechanical properties as well as antifouling/fouling release performance in laboratory and ocean site testing. The test results showed significantly reduce macro fouling with sustained fouling release characteristics for the coatings produced.

This study was conducted to investigate the potential of medicinal plants as oral health materials derived from natural products. Among the extracts from 200 medicinal plants grown in Nepal, Laos, Mongolia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, and China, stem extracts from Diospyros malabarica (1 mg/disc) showed the highest antibacterial activity against Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC33277 and Streptococcus mutans ATCC25175. The D. malabarica stem extracts showed antibacterial activity similar to chlorhexidine, sodium lauryl sulfate, and triclosan, which were used as a positive control, as well as higher antibacterial activity against S. mutans ATCC25175 than P. gingivalis ATCC33277. The D. malabarica stem extracts showed bactericidal action (MBC, 0.4 mg/ml) against P. gingivalis ATCC33277 and bacteriostatic action against S. mutans ATCC25175. The biofilm production rate of S. mutans ATCC25175 and the expression of the comX gene associated to biofilm formation in the cultures treated with 0.2-1.0 mg/ml of D. malabarica stem extracts were suppressed in a concentration-dependent manner. Based on the above results, it can be concluded that D. malabarica stem extracts can be used as oral health material derived from natural materials, as demonstrated by the bacteriostatic action and inhibition of biofilm formation against S. mutans ATCC25175.
Introduction : Inadequate oral health control is a major risk of oral diseases. Regular home-based care is essential to maintain good oral hygiene. In particular, mouthrinses can support conventional tooth brushing in reducing accumulation of oral plaque. Effect : Antimicrobial mouthrinses are used as part of daily oral care to reduce plaque and gingivitis. Mouthrinses contains fluoride could help remineralization of enamel and dentin. The most common molecules contained in mouthrinses are chlorhexidine, essential oils, cetyl pyridinium chloride, triclosan, hyaluronic acid. Currently, chlorhexidine is the most efficacious compound, with both antiplaque and antibacterial activities. Similar results are reported for essential oils and cetyl pyridinium chloride, although with a somewhat reduced efficacy. Considering the adverse effects of chlorhexidine and its time-related characteristics, this molecule may best be indicated for acute/short term use, while essential oils and cetyl pyridinium chloride may be appropriate for long-term, maintenance treatment. Conclusion and suggestion : Antimicrobial mouthrinses are safe and effective, and when used in conjunction with brushing and flossing, they are an important method of reducing plaque and gingivitis. To improve compliance, dental health care professionals should adapt oral health care recommendations to fit patients' specific needs.

Increasing prevalence of childhood obesity poses threats to the global health burden. Because this rising prevalence cannot be fully explained by traditional risk factors such as unhealthy diet and physical inactivity, early-life exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is recognized as emerging novel risk factors for childhood obesity. EDCs can disrupt the hormone-mediated metabolic pathways, affect children's growth and mediate the development of childhood obesity. Many organic pollutants are recently classified to be EDCs. In this review, we summarized the epidemiological and laboratory evidence related to EDCs and childhood obesity, and discussed the possible mechanisms underpinning childhood obesity and early-life exposure to non-persistent organic pollutants (phthalates, bisphenol A, triclosan) and persistent organic pollutants (dichlorodip henyltrichloroethane, polychlorinated biphenyls, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). Understanding the relationship between EDCs and childhood obesity helps to raise public awareness and formulate public health policy to protect the youth from exposure to the harmful effects of EDCs.

Objectives Antimicrobial chemicals are used in a variety of household and personal care products. Exposure to antimicrobial household products has been hypothesized to lead to allergic diseases in children. Methods We investigated antimicrobial household product exposure and allergic symptoms in Korean children. An antimicrobial exposure (AE) score was derived. To examine the symptoms of allergic diseases (current wheeze, current rhinitis, and current eczema) in the past 12 months, we used a questionnaire based on the core module of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Children. Complete data for the analysis were available for 25,805 of the 35,590 (72.5%) children. Results The prevalence of current allergic diseases was as follows: wheeze, 5.6%; allergic rhinitis, 32.6%; and eczema, 17.7%. The mean (standard deviation) AE score was 14.3 (9.3) (range: 0-40). Compared with subjects with a low AE score (reference), subjects with a high AE score (fourth quartile) were more likely to have symptoms of wheezing and allergic rhinitis (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] for wheezing 1.24, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05-1.45, p for trend=0.24; aOR for allergic rhinitis 1.30, 95% CI, 1.20-1.40, p <0.01). Conclusions These findings suggest that frequent use of antimicrobial household products was associated with current wheeze and current allergic rhinitis.
