  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial effect of the low temperature atmospheric plasma device with needle tip designed for easy approach to the oral cavity and root canal against Streptococcus mutans, Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans. The antibacterial activities evaluated by measuring clear zone of agar plate smeared with each bacteria after plasma treatment. To quantify antibacterial effects, dilution plate method was used. In addition, scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used for observation of changes in bacterial morphology. As treatment time of plasma increased, the clear zone was enlarged. The death rate was more than 99%. The SEM results showed that the globular shape of bacteria was distorted. These results suggest that needle tip plasma could be an innovative device for prevention of dental caries, and treatment of apical infection and soft tissue diseases.

  • Performance of electrostatic diesel PM filtration systems (E-DPS) with different types has been tested using the carbon particles generated by spark discharge in laboratory. Among the five electrostatic precipitators, the multiple wires cylindrical E-DPS with the highest collection efficiency and relatively lower differential pressure at the flow rate of $1\;m^3$/min, as an applicable device to diesel engine as an after treatment system, has been combined with another collection cylinder to improve the collection efficiency of diesel particulate matters generated from diesel engines. The multiple wires cylindrical E-DPS combined with the cylindrical collector showed the collection efficiency of more than 60% at the engine speed of 2,000 rpm with the engine loads of 25 and 50%.

  • As device size shrinks, contamination will increasingly affect the reliability and yield of device. Therefore, contaminants must be removed from the surfaces of Si wafers prior to each process. But it becomes out increasingly difficult to clean silicon surfaces with finer patterns by the conventional wet treatment because of the viscosity and surface tension of solutions. Hence, a damage less dry cleaning process is needed for the silicon surfaces. For the removal of Si native oxide by UV-enhanced dry cleaning. $F_2$ gas and $F_2/H_2$ mixed gas were applied. As a result of analysis, UV-enhnaced $F_2/H_2$ treatment is more suitable than UV-enhanced $F_2$ treatment for removal of native oxide on the surfaces of Si wafers.

  • Photodynamic therapy consists of a photosensitizer, suitable light source and oxygen. The excitation of the photosensitizer at a cancer mass results in oxidation which would ultimately reduce the mass via apoptosis. Millimeter wave (MMW) therapy has also been known to be effective on cancer cell mass reduction, human cell regeneration and immunity enhancement among the Russian clinicians and scientists. In the present study, the two modalities were combined to achieve synergistic effects while reducing the administration dosage of the photosensitizer, photogem, thus minimizing the side effects. The CT-26 adenocarcinoma cell mass was implanted on mice and the tumors were exposed to a simple MMW irradiation or a combined treatment of MMW and PDT. The treatments continued for 4 weeks and the size of the tumor was measured continuously. The significant therapeutic result of MMW was not found during 4 weeks, preferably more cancer recurrence possibility after MMW irradiation was observed. The results of this study suggest that the combination of MMW irradiation and photodynamic treatment should not be recommended. The result of the MMW treatment alone, however, displayed suppressive effect on cancer cell proliferation for both in vitro and in vivo. The results of the present study suggest that the millimeter wave therapy deserves a further study.

  • Recently, amorphous oxide semiconductors (AOSs) based thin-film transistors (TFTs) have received considerable attention for application in the next generation displays industry. The research trends of AOSs based TFTs investigation have focused on the high device performance. The electrical properties of the TFTs are influenced by trap density. In particular, the threshold voltage ($V_{th}$) and subthreshold swing (SS) essentially depend on the semiconductor/gate-insulator interface trap. In this article, we investigated the effects of Ar plasma-treated $SiO_2$ insulator on the interfacial property and the device performances of amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-IGZO) TFTs. We report on the improvement in interfacial characteristics between a-IGZO channel layer and gate insulator depending on Ar power in plasma process, since the change of treatment power could result in different plasma damage on the interface.

  • Fingerprint Recognition System is made up of Off-line treatment and On-line treatment; the one is registering all the information of there trieving features which are retrieved in the digitalized fingerprint getting out of the analog fingerprint through the fingerprint acquisition device and the other is the treatment making the decision whether the users are approved to be accessed to the system or not with matching them with the fingerprint features which are retrieved and database from the input fingerprint when the users are approaching the system to use. In this paper, we propose a new data structure, called Union and Division, for processing binarized digital fingerprint image efficiently. We present a minutiae extraction algorithm that is using Union and Division and consists of binarization, noise removal, minutiae extraction stages.

  • The populations of Asian countries are expected to age rapidly in the near future, with a dramatic increase in the number of heart failure (HF) patients also anticipated. The need for palliative and end-of-life care for elderly patients with advanced HF is currently recognized in aging societies. However, palliative care and active treatment for HF are not mutually exclusive, and palliative care should be provided to reduce suffering occurring at any stage of symptomatic HF after the point of diagnosis. HF patients are at high risk of sudden cardiac death from the early stages of the disease onwards. The decision of whether to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the event of an emergency is challenging, especially in elderly HF patients, because of the difficulty in accurately predicting the prognosis of the condition. Furthermore, advanced HF patients are often fitted with a device, and device deactivation at the end of life is a complicated process. Treatment strategies should thus be discussed by multi-disciplinary teams, including palliative experts, and should consider patient directives to address the problems discussed above. Open communication with the HF patient regarding the expected prognosis, course, and treatment options will serve to support the patient and aid in future planning.

  • As a kind of distributed energy system, the co-generation system based Diesel engine using after-treatment device was devised for its environmental friendly and economic qualities. It is utilized in that the electric power is produced by the generator connected to the Diesel engine, and waste heat is recovered from both the exhaust gases and the engine itself by the finned tube and shell & tube heat exchangers. An after-treatment device composed ceramic heater and DOC(Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) is installed at the engine outlet in order to completely reignite the unburned fuel from the Diesel engine. In this study, mutual relation of each experimental condition was derived through minimum number of experiment using Taguchi Design and ANOVA recently used in the various fields. It is found that the total efficiency (thermal efficiency plus electric power generation efficiency) of this system reaches maximum 94.4% which is approximately higher than that of the typical diesel engine exhaust heat recovery system.

  • TObjectives: Develop a sham moxibustion and determine whether subjects can distinguish a sham moxibustion from a real moxibustion. Design: Single-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial Methods: Sham and real moxibustion resemble each other in appearance, burning procedure, but the base of the sham moxibustion isolates the moxa-producing heat and smoke. This device was tested in a clinical trial in which subjects received moxibustion at Zhongwan(CV12), Mingmen(GV4), Quchi(LI11), Zusanli(ST36), Taichong(LR3)), Hegu(LI4). Volunteers(n=32) were given pre-treatment questionnaire to assess their experience in getting moxibustion therapy and performing it. They randomized into treatment(n=16) or sham controlled group(n=16), received moxibustion according their groups. After treatments, the effectiveness of blinding was assessed. Results: There were no significant differences between two groups in sex, age, moxibustion experience. In the treatment group and the sham group, the number of subjects who believed they received real moxibustion or sham is not different significantly.(P=.668) The consistency of a moxibustion type which subjects received actually and the their guess about that, isn't different significantly in two groups.(P=.465) Conclusion: The sham moxibustion was successfully validated in this study, The results demonstrate that this sham moxibustion blinds subjects and can be used as effective placebo-control in moxibustion clinical trials.
