This work discusses the palm oil mill processing carried out at Jugra Palm Oil Mill Sdn Bhd, situated at Selangor, Malaysia with the capacity of 45-t fresh fruit bunch (FFB)/h. Typically, oil palm residues and palm oil mill effluent (POME) from FFB are generated while processing. Prior to discharge, POME should be treated to remove pollutants in the effluent. As such, the performances of anaerobic and aerobic ponds were assessed in this study to determine temperature, pH, biological oxygen demand (BOD), sludge volume index (SVI), and dissolved oxygen (DO). From the experiments, mesophilic temperature due to better process stability was applied in anaerobic ponds. The pH results displayed a fluctuating trend between lower control limit and upper control limit, and, the pH value increased from one pond to another. The final discharge BOD and SVI appeared to be lower than 100 mg/L and 10 mL/L indicating low degree of pollution and good settling ability for biomass/solid. DO was close to normal, mostly below 2 mg/L. The experimental outcomes revealed the effective treatability of POME in adherence to the standard regulation, which is the priority for environmental sustainability within this industry domain.
This research was investigated which denitrification of wastewater containing nitrate, using upflow anaerobic sludge blanket process. The upflow anaerobic sludge blanket process is also used for both artifical and industrial wastewater. Main ingredients investigated in the artifical and industrial wastewater experiment were the determination of optimum organism/nitrate ratios, nitrate removal efficiency by various hydrogen donor addition and characteristics of granular sludge and gas production in case of various hydrogen donor addition. From the experimental results the following conclusions were made: In case of adding methanol, ethanol and sodium acetate as hydrogen donor granular sludge was formed 50 days after seeding. Average diameter of granular sludge was 4.0 mm and settling velocity was 37 cm/min. Production rate of gas 3.3 L/d in case of adding methanol as hydrogen donor in wastewater containing 150mg/L nitrate. However adding ethanol and sodium acetate as hydrogen donor, gas production rate were 2.2-2.7L/d respectively. In case of adding methanol as hydrogen donor treatability of artifical wastewater contained 150mg/L as nitrate was about 93%. But in addition of sodium acetate in wastewater contained 40mg.L as nitrate, nitrate removal efficiency was 80%.
Most of the sewage treatment plants in Korea are being operated by using the conventional activated sludge process. Recently, as the water criteria have been strict with regard to such main culprits of eutrophication, the existing sewage treatment plants are obliged to upgrade their treatment technology to meet the criteria. Under such circumstances, this study was aimed at analyzing the conditions of an existing sewage treatment plants in Korea, and thereupon, test its treatment performance for the actual sewage water by operating a pilot plant. When the pilot plant was operated with the NPR process at the capacity of $30m^3/day$, the average contents of BOD, $COD_{Mn}$, SS, T-N and T-P in the effluents were 7.0 mg/L, 9.7 mg/L, 5.1 mg/L, 8.0 mg/L and 0.23 mg/L, respectively, which were very stable in general. Accordingly, if the NPR process used for this pilot plant to upgrade the treatment technology for the sewage treatment plat could be adopted, the effluent water quality criteria effective beginning from 2008 would be met.
Remediation of crude oil contaminated soil is complicate and hard to apply traditional methods because of its persistency, durability, and high viscosity. Therefore, in this study, the efficiency of crude oil contaminated soil remediation was tested by developing a pilot-scale thermal desorption system using the indirect heating method with an exhaust gas treatment. Under optimal condition drawed by temperature and retention time, the remedial efficiency of crude oil contaminated soil and treatability of exhaust gas were analyzed. Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration of crude oil contaminated soil was decreased to 69.7 mg/kg on average and the remedial efficiency was measured at 99.60%. Through the exhaust gas, 86.0% of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) was degraded and 97.16% of complex malodor was reduced under the suggested optimum operation condition. This study provides important basic data to be useful in scaling up of the indirect thermal desorption system for the remediation of crude oil contaminated soil.
This study was performed to provide basic information for evaluating the efficiency and applicable extent of photocatalysis and ozonation for the treatment of dye wastewater. The treatability of dye wastewater by $UV/TiO_2$ and $UV/TiO_2/O_3$ advanced oxidation process (AOP) was investigated under various conditions. The experiments were conducted in a batch reactor of 50 liters equipped with twelve UV Lamps of 16W. In $UV/TiO_2$ AOP, the removal efficiency of TCODMn and Color increased to 58% and 67% respectively with increasing UV intensity. Also, The removal efficiency of TCODMn and Color increased to 97% and 99% respectively with increasing $H_2O_2$. Acid area was more efficient than neutral and alkalic areas in wastewater treatment, and pH 5 was the most effective and the treatment efficiency continually increased as the amount of photocatalyst was increased. When the photocatalyst was increased, TCODMn was removed faster than Color.
The potential of algal-bacterial culture was investigated for advanced treatment of animal wastewater. Fed-batch experiments were carried out to examine treatability of nitrogen and phosphorus in different microbial consortium: Chlorella vulgaris, activated sludge, three microalgae strains (Scenedesmus, Microcystis, Chlorella) and Bacillus consortium, and three microalgae strains and sludge consortium. Single culture of C. vugaris showed the better efficiency for nitrogen removal but was not good at organic matter and phosphorus removal compared with activated sludge. Three microalgae and Bacillus consortium was best culture among the culture and consortium for pollutants removal tested in this experiment. Effect of $CO_2$ addition was studied by using three microalgae and Bacillus consortium. $CO_2$ addition enhanced T-P removal efficiency up to 60%. However, removal efficiencies of T-N and ammonia nitrogen reduced on the contrary.
As basic study to evaluate the treatability of oil-contaminated environment with bacteria, isolation and characterization of crude oil-degrading bacterium were carried out. A bacterial strain SH-14 capable of degrading crude oil was isolated from contaminated soils by enrichment culture technique and identified as Acinetobacter sp. by morphological, cultural and biochemical characteristics, and so named Acinetobacter sp. SH-14. The optimal medium composition and cultural conditions for the growth and emulsification of crude oil by Acinetobacter sp. SH-14 used were crude oil of 2.0%, $KNO_3$ of 0.2%, $K_2HPO_4$ of 0.05%, and $MgSO_4\;{\cdot}\;7H_2O$ of 1.0%, along with initial pH 7.0 at $30^{\circ}C$. Acinetobacter sp. SH-14 showed to be resistant to chloramphenicol and utilized various hydrocarbons such as dodecane, hexadecane, isooctane, cyclo-hexane etc., as a sole carbon source. Acinetobacter sp. SH-14 harbored a single plasmid. By agarose gel electrophoresis and curing experiment it was found that the genes for crude oil components degradation were encoded on the plasmid.
In an effort to prevent the formation of DBPs from disinfection and the microbial regrowth in distribution systems, the ozonation followed by biological filtration process in drinking water treatment train has been recently developed as an alternative process to reduce effectively water-born organic matter as precursor. There are, however, insufficient for the consistent information and data about the relation between ozone dosage based on organic surrogate parameter, TOC or DOC and effect of ozonation on BDOC formation. This study is to review critically for the effect of ozonation on biodegradability on the basis of published technical papers including the output from author's research laboratory. It truned out that : 1. ozonation in the presence of organic matter has a tendancy to increase in BDOC content, 2. the rate of BDOC formation was maximum below 1mg $O_3/mg$ DOC of ozone dose, but about maximum content of BDOC was obtainable at the range from 1.5mg $O_3/mg$ DOC to 2mg $O_3/mg$ DOC, 3. from above 1mg $O_3/mg$ DOC, the rate of BDOC formation became slow down, 4. from above 2mg $O_3/mg$ DOC, BDOC formation was quantitatively negligible, In conclusion, it needs further systematic study and research concerned to biodegradability and treatability by ozonation in terms of organic characteristics and experimental conditions because it was hard to find out the consistent experimental data comparable each other that were performed by numbers of research authors.
The combined wastewater of municipal landfill leachate and municipal sewage was treated using several sets of bench-scale aerated circulating system including porous media. Investigated items in this experiment were the dominant protozoa and metazoa in this system, the variation of microfauna relationship between operating condition and dominant genera. Also considered the factors determining dominant genera and their role. The outcome of this research is as follows; 1. Aspidisca, Vorticella, Truhellophyllum, Lecane, Philodina, Cyclops were mainly appeared prior to combinding leachate, while Trachelocerca, Bodo, Glaucoma were the dominant genera after combinding leachate. 2. As to metazoa, Nematode and Philodina were not influenced by 5oA leachate mixing ratio, meanwhile Crustacea has high sensitivity for increased leachate mixing ratio and it was not appeared in 5% leachate mixing ratio. 3. The appropriate treatability could'nt be expected at the above 10% leachate mixing ratio. Especially, in the condition of 20% leachate mixing ratio, all of the microfauna were affected damage seriously on their existence. Meanwhile hydraulic retention time, substrate loading rate and slut자e production rate didn't give notable influence on increasing the number of microfauna. 4. As to protozoa, saprozoic and holozoic species were appeared commonly and polysaprobic species were dominent. 5. Filamentous organsms were nearly not affected by leachate mixing. It seems that they could live without any trouble at the 10% leachate mixing ratio, if the substrate is sufficient. 6. Diversity of microfauna had a reducing trernd as the sewage was mixed with leachate.
Contamination of explosive compounds in the soils of military shooting range may pose risks to human and ecosystems. As shooting ranges are located at remote places, active remediation processes with hardwares and equipments are less practical to implement than natural solutions such as bioremediaton. In this study, a series of experiments was conducted to select a suitable carbon source and to optimize dosing rate for the enhanced bioremediation of explosive compounds in surface soils and sediments of shooting ranges with indigenous microorganisms activated by external carbon source. Treatability study using slurry phase reactors showed that the presence of indigenous microbial community capable of explosive compounds degradation in the shooting range soils, and starch was a more effective carbon source than glucose and acetic acid in the removal of TNT. However, at higher starch/soil ratio, i.e., 2.0, the acute toxicity of the liquid phase increased possibly due to transformation products of TNT. RDX degradation by indigenous microorganisms was also stimulated by the addition of starch but the acute toxicity of the liquid phase decreased with the increase of starch/soil ratio. Taken together, the optimum range of starch/soil ratio for the degradation of explosive compounds without significant increase in acute toxicity was found to be 0.2 of starch/soil.
