This study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of castor oil (CSO) as a natural wood preservative. CSO was treated into wood blocks prepared with domestic and imported wood species using a vacuum-pressure method, and then treatability, leachability and decay resistance of the CSO-treated wood blocks were examined. Although CSO was penetrated effectively into wood blocks of all wood species, the CSO-treatability was the highest in Western hemlock, followed by Japanese larch (LA), soft maple and Mongolian oak due to the difference of its anatomical structure. Except for LA, the more retained, the more leached during a saline water-immersing process for 48h. The use of ethanol added to reduce the viscosity of CSO affected negatively the treatability and leachability of wood blocks. Decay resistance, which was evaluated by the weight loss of wood blocks exposed against Fomitopsis palustris (FOP) and Trametes versicolor, of the CSO-treated/leached wood blocks was superior to that of control. Especially, most of wood blocks treated with preserving solution composed of only CSO (CSO-2) did not decayed and showed a very low weight loss against FOP. The decay resistance results from CSO retained in wood blocks after leaching. The retention of CSO could identify using the observation of X-ray microscope. Length of wood strips, which were treated with CSO-2 and then immersed in saline water for 2 weeks, hardly changed in all cutting directions. In addition, weight gain and length-swelling rate of the wood strips were extremely low compared to those of control. These results indicate that moisture resistance of the wood strips was improved by the CSO treatment. It is concluded that the treatment of CSO using a vacuum-pressure method provides the decay resistance and dimensional stability of wood, and thus CSO can be used as a natural wood preservative on various indoor and outdoor circumstances.
In Korea, ocean dumping has been widely used as the ultimate disposal of sewage sludge. However, ocean dumping of food wasted and sewage sludge from 2013 is expected to legally restricted as London convention on marine pollution prevention has been effective in 2009. This research aims to examine the effect of HEAS in treating the environmental pollution load caused by organic high concentrated sludge. Thus, onsite laboratory scale treatability test using HEAS was adopted to treat the high concentrated organic sludge from sewage and industrial wastewater treatment plant. The research results showed that the HEAS is useful to reduce the environmental pollution caused by organic high concentrated sludge. Specific results are as follows. 1. The organic removal after the sludge digestion using the high efficiency aeration system was 55.2-85.8%. Although these results were lower than those from the general sewage treatment, the high efficiency aeration system could be evaluated as efficient, considering the object sludge contained the industrial waster water. 2. The average removal efficiency was about 25.2%. 3. It was revealed that sludge digestion by the high efficiency aeration system could effectively contribute to the sludge treatment cost. Especially, the high efficiency aeration system is more applicable to the onsite treatment of small sewage and wastewater treatment plant that contains high solid content sludge, industrial wastewater sludge, high fixed solid sludge.

Treatability of heavy metals in marine sediments contaminated with mainly organic matter was investigated on the basis of washing technology using oxidizers and surfactants. Sediment samples were collected at N area which expected for remediation project of contaminated marine sediment. For additives, hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) and Tween-80 were used at oxidizer and nonionic surfactant, respectively. In experiments, sediments was mixed with sea water at the ratio of 1 : 3 than $H_2O_2$ (1 M, 3 M, 4 M, 5 M) and Tween-80 (0.05%) were added. Samples were gathered at following reaction time (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 min and 24 h). Total Organic Carbon (TOC) was 55.2% at the conditions of 5 M $H_2O_2+0.05%$ Tween-80 24 h. Hence total heavy metals were Cu 29.5%, Zn 42.3%, Cd 73.0% and bioavailable heavy metals were Cu 60.0%, Zn 77.7%, Cd 90.2% at the conditions of 5 M $H_2O_2+0.05%$ Tween-80 10 min. The correlations for between bioavailable metals (Cu, Zn, Cd) and TOC were significant (Cu, Zn, Cd; $r^2=0.94$, 0.85, 0.69, respectively).
This study was conducted to evaluate the pressure treatment characteristics of yellow poplar skin timber with ACQ-2, CUAZ-3, and CuHDO-1. The effect of moisture content (MC) on treatability was investigated, and fixation characteristics of copper-based preservatives were also evaluated. Sapwood of yellow poplar, which was dried below 50 percent MC, was fully penetrated with preservatives, and minimum requirement of preservative retention for the hazard class H3 was achieved. Through measuring retention gradient in yellow poplar sapwood, it was confirmed that minimum requirement of preservative retention for the hazard class H3 was achieved in the assay zone from the surface to 15 mm-depth when the specimens were dried below 30 percent MC. Yellow poplar heartwood did not meet the minimum requirement of penetration and retention for the hazard class H3 over the range of pretreatment MCs tested. The fixation rate of copper was much faster under drying condition compared with nondrying condition; more than 90% of copper were fixed in 3 weeks at $21^{\circ}C$ under drying conditions.
This study was designed to investigate the effect of treatment variables on CCA treatment of Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora), Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis), and ezo spruce (Picea jezoensis) round posts. Variables included were duration of initial vacuum (30, 45, or 60 minutes) and maximum pressure applied (8.5, 10.5, or 14.0 kg/$cm^2$), and maximum pressure was maintained until refusal point was reached. Regardless of wood species, extending the duration of initial vacuum more than 30 minutes did not affect treatability. Increasing pressure did not affect preservative penetration; however, preservative retention was affected by pressure levels, particularly at higher level (14.0 kg/$cm^2$). Preservative penetration depth of Japanese red pine met a minimum requirement specified by Notification of Korean Forestry Administration (No. 1999-8) for hazard class H5 of CCA-treated wood. Penetration of preservative in both Japanese larch and ezo spruce was not deep because of shallow sapwood thickness of these species, so pretreatment such as incising should be considered if these species are treated with preservatives. Although retention in Japanese red pine was not significantly increased even with 14.0 kg/$cm^2$, that of refractory Japanese larch and ezo spruce was significantly increased with the application of 14.0 kg/$cm^2$. Effect of treatment variables on refusal time was unclear; however, it is cleared that the refusal time was shortened with the increase in sapwood thickness.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the treatability of contaminated groundwater with TPH and (or) $Cr^{6+}$. Laboratory scale tests were performed for oil/water separation, dissolved air flotation (DAF), coagulation and precipitation, and filtration with sand and activated carbon respectively. Two times of oil/water separation tests for total 40 minutes of separation or separating time shows 90.2 % of TPH removal rate. In case of DAF test for high TPH sample, the TPH removal rates were not varied significantly by the variation of microbubble size. However, tests for low TPH samples show that TPH removal rate increases as microbubbles are smaller. When coagulant was added to sample for DAF test, TPH removal rate was increased 12.3 %. SS removal rate by DAF was 97.9 % at $16-40{\mu}m$ and it was increased as the size of microbubble is reduced. Tests for coagulation and precipitation were performed to evaluate the removal of $Cr^{6+}$ in groundwater. The increase of $FeSO_4$ dosage increased $Cr^{6+}$ removal rate in the coagulation and precipitation process. As the amount of activated carbon in the filter media increased TPH removal rate in the filtration process. SS removal rate by the filtration was 96.7 % similar to the results of DAF process tests. The filtration process treats TPH and SS. Best design parameters are determined as the size of sand is $425-850{\mu}m$ and the ratio of activated carbon and sand is 50:50.
Today a conventional water treatment system has many problems. The ozone/GAC process, sometimes termed Biological Activated Carbon(BAC), appeared to be effective for the removal of soluble organic matters in the drinking water. The water quality of Nak-dong river in Pusan, generally shows BDOC 30-40% and NBDOC 60-70%. The pilot plant installed at the Duk-san water works that was been largest treatability(1,650,000ton/day) in Pusan. A experimental water in the pilot plant made use of the water after sand-filteration. Following results are drawn from this study. Initial adsorption velocity($DOC/DOC_o/T$) in the pure adsorption of GAG had a 0.0225, it's velocity changed to 0.006 after ozone added and the optimum ozone dose ranged of $1.4-2.0mgO_3/L$. A experimental water in the pilot plant composed with humic material(78%). Humic material composed with humic acid(20%) and fulvic acid(56%), and it's rate changed to 18 and 50% respectively after ozone added. DOC constantly decreased in the EBCTs and removal efficieny in the 15min of EBCT was 45-50%. It showed the largest removal rate of BDOC in the EBCT 5 and among the season, characteristics of removal varied. The HPC distributed over $10^6-10^7CFU/cm^3$ in the bed depth and among the season, distribution of HPC were differential.
Microcystin, stable compounds with circular heptapeptides, is presented inside cyanobacterial cell. So far, over 30 types have been known to exist and microcystin-LR, RR among them are the most potent toxin compound. By this reason, a strong oxidant, ozone was used in this study to remove the microcystins produced by cyanobacteria. Removal efficiency of microcystin at M water treatment plant was also evaluated. Microcystin concentration was determined by protein phosphatase inhibition assay. The results showed that dissolved microcystin in raw water detected in the range of 0.011-0.028 ㎍ Microcystin-RR equivalent/l. Above 98% of microcystin was removed through overall treatment system. Therefore, the water treatability of M treatment plant seemed to be excellent. Removal efficiency of microcystin according to unit process varied as characteristics of raw water such as DOC, UV/sub 254/ and turbidity. Removal efficiency of microcystin by ozonation was investigated in laboratory according to contact time and ozone dose. Dissolved microcystin was increased by twice fold according to ozone contact time, but increased by fifth fold according to ozone dose. So, changing of ozone dose more affected microcystin release than changing of ozone contact time. Behavior of microcystin by ozonation was similar to that of DOC, and residual ozone concentration gave influence to removal ratio of microcystin. In conclusion, single ozone treatment wasn't effective on microcystin removal in case of water containing a lot of cells. Therefore, it's more effective to use ozonation process after the removal of cyanobacterial cells in advance.
This study is conducted to investigate treatability by activated sludge process for wastewater from acetaldehyde manufacturing plant. The optimum hydraulic retention time in aeration tank for removal of high strength substrate were measured. The removal efficiency were checked out by hydraulic retention time : 35hr., 40hr. and 45hr., respectively. $COD_{Cr}$, like substances were removed in all hydraulic retention time zone directed for efficiency, but non-biodegradable substances were remained. $COD_{Cr}$ biomass loading was 0.81kg $COD_{Cr}/kgMLVSS$ . day at 35hr. of retention time, 0.34 kg$COD_{Cr}$/kg MLVSS . day at 40hr., and O.l9kg$COD_Cr$/kgMLVSS . day at 45hr. And the mean $COD_{Cr}$, removal efficiency was 65.5%, 81.6% and 83.0%, respectively. And also $COD_{Cr}$, volume loading was 1.01kg$COD_{Cr}/m^3$ day, 0.87kg$COD_{Cr}/m^3$ - day, and 0.79kg$COD_{Cr}/m^3{\cdot }$day, respectively. The basic design parameter obtained is as fallows. The value of Specific substrate removal rate coefficient (k), Yield coefficient(Y) and Decay coefficient($k_d$) was $0.0013day^{-1}$, $0.505kgMLVSS/kgCOD_{Cr}$ and $0.040day^{-1}$, respectively.
Terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis was used to monitor inoculated oil-degrading microorganisms during bioremedial treatability tests. A pair of universal primers, fluorescently labeled 521F and 1392R, was employed to amplify small subunit rDNA in order to simultaneously detect two bacterial strains, Corynebacterium sp. IC10 and Sphingomonas sp. KH3-2, and a yeast strain, Yarrowia lipolytica 180. Digestion of the 5'-end fluorescence/labeled PCR products with HhaI produced specific terminal-restriction fragments (T-RFs) of 185 and 442 bases, corresponding to Corynebacterium sp. IC10 and Y. lipolytica 180, respectively. The enzyme NruI produced a specific T-RF of 338 bases for Sphingomonas sp. KH3-2. The detection limit for oildegrading microorganisms that were inoculated into natural environments was determined to be $0.01\%$ of the total microbial count, regardless of the background environment. When three oil-degrading microorganisms were released into oil-contaminated sand microenvironments, strains IC10 and 180 survived for 35 days after inoculation, whereas strain KH3-2 was detected at 8 days, but not at 35 days. This result implies that T-RFLP could be a useful tool for monitoring the survival and relative abundance of specific microbial strains inoculated into contaminated environments.
