Damage Evaluation of Wheel Tread for High Speed Train Using Replication and Fracture Mechanics Characteristics (비파괴적 표면조직검사법과 파괴역학 특성에 따른 고속철도용 차륜 답면의 손상 평가)

  • The majority of catastrophic wheel failures are caused by surface opening fatigue cracks either in the wheel tread or wheel flange areas. The inclined cracks at railway wheel tread are initiated and the cracks are caused by wheel damage-spatting after 60,000 km running. Because the failured railway wheel is reprofiled before regular wheel reprofiling, the maintenance cost for the railway wheel is increased. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the mechanism for initiation of crack. In the present paper, the combined effect on railway wheels of a periodically varying contact pressure and an intermittent thermal braking loading is investigated. To analyze damage cause for railway wheels, the measurements for replication of wheel surface and the effect of braking application in field test are carried out. The result shows that the damages in railway wheel tread are due to combination of thermal loading and ratcheting.

  • Brushless D.C. Motor is widely used for industrial application because of high efficiency and high power density. Especially, in home appliance, BLDCM is very useful due to high control performance and low acoustic noise. In this paper, BLDCM and its controller are designed and developed for tread mill application. With the restricted stator structure, permanent magnet rotor is designed for manufacturing and cost effectiveness using CAD and FEM analysis. A ferrite magnetic material is used as a rotor magnet for the cost and temperature advantages. For a stable operation of tread mill, over current and temperature can be detected and protected. The designed BLDCM and its controller was verified by the experimental results.

  • The damaged wheel in railway vehicle would cause a poor ride comfort, a rise in the maintenance cost and even fracture of the wheel, which then leads to a tremendous social and economical cost. The defect initiation and crack propagation in wheel may result in the damage of the railway vehicle or derailment. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the characteristics of the wheel tread. In the present paper, the characteristics of wheel tread based on contact positions, running distance and brake pattern are evaluated. The result shows that the damaged wheel tread is remarkably depended on the contact positions between wheel and rail.

  • This study was started to develop maintenance technology for wheel tread suitable domestic railway environment. As a pre-study to develop optima] wheel tread, we analyzed the wear characteristics of wheel tread that is being applied to railway rolling-stock in KNR. To analyze wheel wear characteristics. we have conducted the simulation and experiment for passenger rolling-stock and obtained useful datum. Here, we describe some results.

In this paper, 2.5HP rated BLDCM controller and drive was developed for tread mill application. The prototype BLDCM has 4 poles rotor and 24 slots stator. Ferrite was used as a rotor magnet due to the cost and temperature characteristic. For the stable operation of tread mill, over current and high temperature can be detected by the DSP control1er. For the commutation signal, switching patterns from the sensorless circuit and hall sensor signal are used in the DSP controller.

  • This paper describes a vision based automation case study for the tire tread extruder line. To accurately measure the thread widths, two cameras with laser line illumination have been installed near the takeaway conveyer. The overall tread extruder line is then automated by controlling the speeds of take away conveyor and screw motor such that a difference between measured widths and the targeted data is minimized. By doing this, the conventional tread extruder line has been replaced by the developed automated computer system and with only one operator, increasing the production efficiency and reducing safety accidents.

  • Effects on the tractor vibrations of tread, wheelbase and axle load distribution were analyzed by using mathematical models of tractor and random road surface. A 4 degrees of freedom tractor model was developed to predict the bounce, pitch and roll motions of tractor. The front axle which is constrained to roll with respect to tractor body was also included in the model. A random road profile was generated and used as an excitation input to the tractor. Output vibrations of the model were predicted and analyzed by a computer simulation method. In general, longer tread tends to reduce rolling and longer wheelbase does bouncing and pitching motions. Tractor vibrations were minimum when the ratio of front to rear axle loads was in the range of 30:70-35:65. Sensitivity analysis showed that rolling and pitching motions most sensitively varied with changes in tread and wheelbase while bouncing motion did with the location of mass center.

  • Frictional heat generates when the brake shoes are in contact with wheel tread under high pressure for EMU's speed control, stopping, and deceleration. Such a frictional heat has a significant effect on the wheel tread. In order to analyze the characteristics of frictional heat and measure the amount of the generated heat, tests by using a brake dynamometer and for running vehicles are carried out. In addition, finite element analysis is performed to simulate the temperature distribution and thermal analysis of the brake shoes. Through the tests and the simulations, it is found that the problems by temperature increase at tread braking are verified.
