  • Rotating disks are used in various machines such as data storage device, gyroscope, circular saw, etc. Transverse vibration of a rotating disk is very important for the performance of these machines. This work proposes a method to suppress transverse vibration of a very flexible rotating disk in non-contacting manner. A system considered in this study is a very flexible rotating disk with a thrust bearing pad which is located underneath the rotating disk. The pressure force generated in the gap between the rotating disk and the thrust pad pushes the rotating disk in the direction of axis of rotation while the centrifugal force and the elastic recovery force push the rotating disk in reverse direction. The balance between these forces suppresses the transverse vibration of the rotating disk. A coupled disk-fluid system is analyzed numerically. The finite element method is used to compute the pressure distribution between the thrust pad and the rotating disk while the finite difference method is used to compute the transverse vibration of a rotating disk. Results show that the transverse vibration of the rotating disk can be suppressed effectively for certain combination of air bearing and operating parameters.

  • Periodic longitudinal vibrations of a video and audio tape and the like used for transducing pictures and sounds may be induced by self-excited vibrations which are caused by frictions against the heads and guides, and their eccentricity, noncircularity or irregularity. It is important to analyze the longitudinal vibration of a tape because it causes distortions of a reproduced signal. It is difficult to measure directly the longitudinal vibration. In this paper a method estimating longitudinal vibration using impulse responses in the transverse direction is presented. And, the parameters boundary domain where the transverse and longitudinal vibration can be decoupled is introduced. In the domain where the both vibrations are decoupled, analytic methods using frequency characteristics and transient responses of the transverse vibration, respectively, are presented. The time domain method predicted more exactly the instantaneous phase of the longitudinal vibration than frequency domain method did.

  • The vibration of an axially moving string is studied when the string has geometric non-linearity and translating acceleration. Based upon the von karman strain theory, the equations of motion are derived considering the longitudinal and transverse deflection. The equation for the longitudinal vibration is linear and uncoupled, while the equation for the transverse vibration is non-linear and coupled between the longitudinal and transverse deflections. These equations are discretized by using the Galerkin approximation after they are transformed into the variational equations, i.e. the weak forms so that the admissible and comparison functions can be used for the bases of the longitudinal and transverse deflections respectively. With the discretized nonlinear equations, the time responses are investigated by using the generalized-$\alpha$ method.

  • When a cantilever beam with a lumped mass at its free end undergoes free transverse vibration, internal axial forces are produced in the beam. Such internal axial forces have an effect on free transverse vibration of the beam. This effect is studied in this paper. The equations of motion for the beam in terms of the generalized coordinates including the effect are derived. The method for determining free transverse vibration of the beam including the effect is presented. In numerical simulations, the results of free transverse vibration of the free end of the beam including and not including the effect are obtained. Based on comparison between the results obtained, the conclusions concerning the effect are given.

  • This paper provides a stability analysis of the transverse vibration of a spinning disk under the torque fluctuation from a permanent magnetic motor. An analytical model has been formulated for a flexible annular disk with its spinning velocity varying harmonically with the same frequency as the cogging torque. A perturbation method based on multiple time scales is applied to perform the stability analysis. Based on expressions for the amplitude and frequency of the parametric excitation, stability boundaries are determined in terms of a nominal spindle velocity, the least common multiple of poles and slots, the magnitude of torque fluctuation and the modal characteristics of. the disk. The stability diagrams predicted by perturbation have been verified numerically using the Floquet theory, which is in good agreement. In conclusion, the fluctuation in spinning velocity is found to affect the stability of the transverse vibration of a rotating disks. The results of this work can be applied to high precision spindle systems such as computer storage systems.

  • The transverse vibration of the deploying beam from rigid hub was analyzed by simulation and experiment. The linear governing equation of the deploying beam was obtained using the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. To discretize the governing equation, the Galerkin method was used. After transforming the governing equation into the weak form, the weak form was discretized. The discretized equation was expressed by the matrix-vector form, and then the Newmark method was applied to simulate. To consider the damping effect of the beam, we conducted the modal test with various beam length. The mass proportional damping was selected by the relation of the first and second damping ratio. The proportional damping coefficient was calculated using the acquired natural frequency and damping ratio through the modal test. The experiment was set up to measure the transverse vibration of the deploying beam. The fixed beam at the carriage of the linear actuator was moved by moving the carriage. The transverse vibration of the deploying beam was observed by the Eulerian description near the hub. The deploying or retraction motion of the beam had the constant velocity and the velocity profile with acceleration and deceleration. We compared the transverse vibration results by the simulation and experiment. The observed response by the Eulerian description were analyzed.

  • A simplified rational method is developed to evaluate transverse earthquake-induced forces in continuous bridges. This method models the bridge as a beam on elastic foundation, and assumes a sinusoidal curve for both vibration mode shape and deflected shape in the transverse direction. The principle of minimum total potential is used to calculate the displacements and the earthquake-induced forces in the transverse direction. This method is concise and easy to apply, and hence, offers an attractive alternative to a lengthy and time consuming three dimensional modeling of the bridge as given by AASHTO under its Single Mode Spectral Analysis Method.

  • In the present study, a finite strip method for the vibration and stability analyses of anisotropic laminated composite plates is developed according to the higher-order shear deformation theory. This theory accounts for the parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains through the thickness of the plate and for zero transverse shear stresses on the plate surfaces. In comparison with the finite strip method based on the first-order shear deformation theory, the present method gives improved results for very thick plates while using approximately the same number of degrees of freedom. It also eliminates the need for shear correction factors in calculating the transverse shear stiffness. A number of numerical examples are presented to show the effect of aspect ratio, length-to-thickness ratio, number of plies, fibre orientation and stacking sequence on the natural frequencies and critical buckling loads of simply supported rectangular cross-ply and arbitrary angle-ply composite laminates.

  • The possibility of detecting a crack in L-shaped pipes filled with fluid based on measurement of transverse natural frequencies is examined. The problem is solved by representing the crack by a massless rotational spring, simulating the out-of-plane transverse vibration only without solving the coupled torsional vibration and using the transfer matrix method for solution of the governing equation. The theoretical solutions are verified by experiments. The cracks considered are external, circumferentially oriented and have straight front. Pipes made of aluminium and mild steel are tested with water as internal fluid. Crack size to pipe thickness ratio ranging from 0.20 to 0.57 and fluid (gauge) pressure in the range of 0 to 10 atmospheres are examined. The rotational spring stiffness is obtained by an inverse vibration analysis and deflection method. The details of the two methods are given. The results by the two methods are presented graphically and show good agreement. Crack locations are also determined by the inverse analysis. The maximum absolute error in the location is 13.80%. Experimentally determined variation of rotational spring stiffness with ratio of crack size to thickness is utilized to predict the crack sizes. The maximum absolute errors in prediction of crack size are 17.24% and 16.90% for aluminium and mild steel pipes respectively.

  • With the trend towards high propulsive level, increasing ship's dimensions and heavier shaft systems supported by the hull structure of relatively stiffness in modern ships, transverse vibrations of propulsion shaft system have become one of the problems that should be predicted in the early design stage. Regarding transverse vibrations, coupling terms such as oilfilm, gyroscope and hydrodynamic effect of the propeller exist between the vertical and horizontal vibration, furthermore for the shaft system with strut and bossing its physical properties incorporated with hull structure must be considered. In order to predict the transverse vibratory condition of the propulsion shaft and take some appropriate countermeasures, it is necessary to make a fairly strict estimation of the vibratory behaviours of it. In this paper, theoretical approach using the finite element method is investigated to calculate natural frequencies and vibration modes for coupled free transverse vibrations of shaft system in two planes. Based on the method investigated a digital computer program is developed and is applied to calculate the above-mentioned vibrations of an experimental model shaft system. The results of the calculation are compared with those of the experimental measurements and they show an acceptable agreement.
