  • In this paper, a numerical method is utilized to study the effect of a new vibration absorber on vibration response of the stiffened functionally graded (SFG) cylindrical shell under a couple of axial and transverse compressions. The material composition of the stiffeners and shell is continuously changed through the thickness. The vibration absorber consists of a mass-spring-damper system which is connected to the ground utilizing a linear local damper. To simplify, the spring element of the vibration absorber is called global potential. The von Kármán strain-displacement kinematic nonlinearity is employed in the constitutive laws of the shell and stiffeners. To consider the stiffeners in the model, the smeared stiffener technique is used. After obtaining the governing equations, the Galerkin method is applied to discretize the nonlinear dynamic equation of system. In order to find the nonlinear vibration responses, the fourth order Runge-Kutta method is utilized. The influence of the stiffeners, the dynamic absorber parameters on the vibration behavior of the SFG cylindrical shell is investigated. Also, the influences of material parameters of the system on the vibration response are examined.

  • Compressive flanges of steel box girder is designed based on the ultimate strength behavior of sub-panel which is enclosed with longitudinal stiffeners and transverse stiffeners on appropriate safety factor. However, it is rational that the ultimate strength is calculated considering the various factors such as number and stiffness of longitudinal stiffener, spacing of transverse stiffener, initial deformation and residual stress distribution. In this study, an analysis program based on Folded Plate theory is developed considering the geometric effects and the material nonlinearity. The analysis program is applicated to the steel box girder bridges which is really constructed in domestic.

  • In this paper, the vibration characteristics of the trapezoidal corrugated plate with axial stiffeners and lumped masses are investigated by the analytical method. The corrugated plate can be treated as an equivalent orthotropic plate as this plate has different flexure properties in two perpendicular directions; flexible in the corrugation direction and stiff in the transverse direction. The effective extensional and flexural stiffness of the equivalent plate are considered to obtain the precise solution in the analysis. The plate is stiffened by concentric stiffeners horizontally to the corrugation direction. The discrete stiffener theory is adopted to consider the position of stiffener. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach, the comparison is made with the results of 3D ANSYS finite element solutions. Some numerical results are presented to check the effect of the geometric properties.

  • The free vibration characteristics of corrugated laminated composite plates with axial stiffeners is investigated using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The plate is stiffened by beams with open cross-section area. The equivalent homogenization model is used for the corrugated laminated composite plates. This homogenization model is treated a corrugated plate as an orthotropic plate that has different material properties in two perpendicular directions. The motion of equivalent plate is represented on the basis of the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) to account for the effect of rotary inertia and transverse shear deformation. Stiffeners are considered as discrete elements to predict the local vibration mode to be generated by the presence of stiffeners. To validate the proposed analytical approach, natural frequencies and vibration mode shapes from the analytical method are compared with those from the FEA by ANSYS.

  • Hydroelastic slamming against the wetdeck of a multihull vessel is studied numerically and experimentally. The beam equations and a two-dimensional flow model are used to find the dynamic stresses in longitudinal stiffeners between two transverse stiffeners. The largest stresses in the structure occur in the time scale of the lowest wet natural period of the beam. A simple relation between the maximum stress, the local geometry and the impact velocity of the wetdeck is established. The stresses in the wetdeck are neither sensitive to the radius of curvature of the waves nor where the waves initially hit the wetdeck. It is concluded that the maximum impact pressure should not be used to find maximum bending stresses during wetdeck slamming.

  • In this paper we deal with stability problems of any complex structure that can be modeled by beam and shell finite elements. We use for illustration the steel plate girders, which are used in bridge construction, and in industrial halls or building construction. Long spans, slender cross sections exposed to heavy loads, are all critical design points engineers must take into account. Knowing the critical load that will cause lateral torsional buckling of the girder, or load that can lead to web buckling, as an important scenario to consider in a design process. Many of such problem, including lateral torsional buckling with influence of lateral supports and their spacing on critical load can be solved by the proposed method. An illustrative study of web buckling also includes effects of position and spacing of transverse and longitudinal web stiffeners, where stiffeners can be modelled optionally using shell or frame elements.

  • The prediction of the crushing strength and corresponding energy dissipation of unstiffened and stiffened plates under axial compression is discussed. Semi-empirical formulae for the crushing strength and dissipation energy of these stiffened plates are derived from the assesment of the structural behavior of unstiffened and stiffened box columns consisted of rectangular plates with longitudinal, transverse and orthogonal stiffeners. To demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed formulae, they are compared with the existing formulae and experimental results, which are shown in good agreements.

  • Container ships has a transverse section in the form of an open profile, making it very sensitive to torsion phenomena. To minimize this effect, a structure known as a torsion box exists, which is subject to high stresses influenced by the fatigue phenomenon and the existence of cut-outs, for the passage of the longitudinal stiffeners, acting as stress concentrators. The aim of this study is to propose a two-stage design methodology to aid designers in satisfying the structural requirements and contribute with to a better understanding of the considered structure. The transverse webs of a torsional box structure are examined by comparing different cut-out geometries from numerical models with different regular load conditions to obtain the variables of the fatigue safety factor through linear regression models. The most appropriate geometry of the torsion box is established in terms of minimum weight, from nonlinear multivariable optimization models.

  • Ship structure is composed of the welded mixture members which are plate and stiffeners. Ship structure is also influenced by variable loadings such as wave and inertia load. There have been several fatigue damage problems on the connection between longitudinal and transverse web due to wide usage of high tensile steel and adoption of wide web space to improve shipbuilding productivity. It is impossible to estimate the fatigue lives for all connection details through refined fatigue analysis. It is necessary to use the simplified approach for the fatigue life estimation of the connection details. PLUS analysis, which is suggested by the classification society, is one of the simplified approaches and is widely adopted to get fatigue lives for the connection details along whole cargo hold area. However, ship building yards still have difficulties to get fatigue lives due to large amount of calculation and time even if this approach reduce the time and amount of calculation. This paper treats the computing system developed to reduce efforts of estimating the fatigue lives. The influence factors of mean shear stress and local dynamic pressure are easily calculated and fatigue lives for all hot spots can be estimated automatically by the developed computing system. It is possible to reduce computing time and efforts to get the fatigue lives for the connection details between longitudinals and transverse webs along the ship. This system was applied to get fatigue lives on the connection details of a VLCC and verified the availability.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the control method of the global bending distortion caused by fabrication process of hatch-cover in a container ship. In order to do it, the transitional behavior of global bending distortion in the deck of hatch-cover during fabrication process was measured by 3-dimensional measuring instrument. From the results, the principal factor controlling the global bending distortion was identified as the bending moment associated with the longitudinal shrinkage force and transverse shrinkage caused by welding and flame heating and the change of the centroid axis of hatch-cover in each fabrication process. Therefore, in this study, with the predictive equations of the longitudinal shrinkage force and transverse shrinkage caused by welding and flame heating and the simplified thermo elastic method, the predictive method for the global bending distortion was established and verified by comparing with the measured result. Based on the results, the amount of reverse bending distortion of main stiffeners was determined to prevent the global bending distortion of hatch-cover.
