  • According to the trend of a large-sized vessel and a industrial carrier, the role of the independent contractors such as transport terminal operators, stevedores and warehousemen is increasing the base of cargo distribution that include the function of storage, warehousing, loading, unloading, trimming, dunnaging and lashing. But the common law doctrine of privity of contract has been a perennial source of difficulty for litigants seeking to enforce rights and obligations arising under a bill of lading contract. When carriage contract is negotiated, the concerned parties will be aware that some portion of obligations arising from the contract will be performed by the independent contractors engaged to carry out a particular function. It is reasonable for the independent contractors to be allowed the benefit of the carrier under the contract of carriage. As a part of the alleviating measures for the liability of independent contractors has been allowed various schemes, specially including 'Himalaya Clause'. Therefore, this study performed the validity of 'Himalaya Clause' by means of a recent judicial precedent by the Supreme Court and analyzed the rights of third parties, specially transport terminal operators, under the contract of carriage.

  • Korea's traffic congestion costs including other social costs due to accidents, environmental pollution and increased demand is increasing every year. In this regard, direction of government policy was geared toward suppression of vehicle demand and activation of public transportation, which is determined to be the best solution with limited supply of infrastructure such as road facilities. This study aims to implement public transport bus-only Head-Up Display (hereafter called HUD) technology which displays public transport information required for a bus driver on the front glass of a bus. The public transport bus-only HUD not only prevents gaze dispersion of bus drivers but also helps to reduce the heavy workload of bus drivers by providing information required for driving. Ultimately, the final research purpose is a reduction of bus traffic accidents by 50% caused by negligence in keeping eyes forward or sideways.

Development Of A Windows-Based Predictive Model For Estimating Sediment Resuspension And Contaminant Release From Dredging Operations

  • A windows-based software package, named DREDGE, is developed for estimating sediment resuspension and contaminant release during dredging operations. DREDGE allows user to enter the necessary dredge information, site characteristics, operational data, and contaminant characteristics, then calculates an array of concentration using the given values. The program mainly consists of the near-field models, which are obtained empirically, for estimating sediment resuspension and the far-field models, which are obtained analytically, for suspended sediment transport. A linear equilibrium partitioning approach is applied to estimate particulate and dissolved contaminant concentrations. This software package which requires only a minimal amount of data consists of three components; user input, tabular output, and graphical output. Combining the near-field and far-field models into a user-friendly windows-based computer program can greatly save dredge operator's, planners', and regulators' efforts for estimating sediment transports and contaminant distribution.

Numerical Modeling of One-Dimensional Longitudinal Dispersion Equation using Eulerian Method

  • Various Eulerian-Lagerangian numerical models for the one-dimensional longtudinal dispersion equation are studied comparatively. In the models studied, the transport equation is decoupled into two component parts by the operator-splitting approach ; one part governing advection and the other dispersion. The advection equation has been solved using the method of characteristics following flud particles along the characteristic line and the result are interpolated onto an Eulerian grid on which the dispersion equation is solved by Crank-Nicholson type finite difference method. In solving the advection equation, various interpolation schemes are tested. Among those, Hermite interpo;ation po;ynomials are superor to Lagrange interpolation polynomials in reducing both dissipation and dispersion errors.

  • The region trunk line railroad route considering regional characters is the final aim of railroad management to operators and passengers. For reflecting these aspect to make policies, The study has been performed by defining and analyzing the informations. According to the methodological and political research, First of all, The feature for demand and supply of railroad in the region trunk line railroad route is that demand aspect was excessively influenced by supply aspect. The demand sensitivity was measured very high on the supply changes. The survey, Containing the regional characters, result the railway and bus use patterns are clearly different and this feature is simiral to that of janghang and pohang district. also, In railroad case, Demand shifts from railroad to other transport sensitively. Therefore, We make some new index besides existing index, which like to management index, rate of boarding, rate of using. After that, We suggest passengers and operator's win-win alternatives.

  • While the crane system operate in port, one of main objective is to transport containers to the goal position as soon as possible. Because this is one of the biggest problem in terms of productivity of port, the container crane is operated by an expert operator until now. However recently an automatic control system with high performance is required to improve the performance of the crane system and to make high productivity. Therefore we developed an optimal controller based on Humoral Immune Algorithm with PID controller. The proposed system has a real time structure and can improve the performance such as anti-sway problem. Some computer simulations are implemented to assess the characteristics of the proposed controller.

  • The convergence of fixed and wireless networks in data communication is providing the necessary driver for M2M commerce to take-off. The opportunities provided by M2M Commerce areonly limited by imagination. Automotive Fleet and Freight, Tolling, Water and Power Metering, Supply Chain Management including Asset Management, Remote Monitoring and Diagnostics, Energy Management and Access Control and Security are among the many M2M applications that are currently getting rolled out. ARC Group expects the worldwide solutions market to be worth in excess of US$ 100 billion by 2007. In addition, operator revenues worldwide from the transport of Telematics data alone will rise from US$ 3.5 billion in 2002 to US$ 78 billion by 2007. This paper discusses some of the lifestyle and business opportunities provided by M2M Commerce in the new ear of network convergence. It also provides some case studies to demonstrate the benefits of M2M Commerce across the supply chain. The key focus of the paper is on achieving enhanced lifestyle, cost reduction, improved profitability and enhanced customer relationship management through M2M Commerce.

  • This paper is to introduce a more effective and flexible restoration algorithm composed to the fault preventing and restoring system now in use. This was possible by considering the changes that can occur by the proper or the improper run of the Feeder, which the power system restoration method now using didn't consider. The new algorithm uses the method minimizing the loss with respect to the load changes occuring when the power system is restored, rather than just simply following the SOP that is only composed of a single Feeder On/off combination. This can present the more effective power system running method for the safer subway running and passenger transport, by giving the system operator the chance to choose between the SOP and the minimum loss method.

  • Recently, the fusion of communication and broadcasting surfaces streaming service such as IPTV with killer application of BcN. In this paper, Premium IP multicast is called as transport service technology that transfer streaming service such as IPTV through integrated, controllable, maintainable network in order to guarantee end-to-end QoS to predefined person. It capacitates billing of multicast service instead of network operator guarantees high quality QoS to subscriber. So, network operators are able to create benefits and find benefit models. The other side, subscribers can use various high quality streaming services.

An Optimal Control of Container Crane Using Evolution Strategy (진화전략을 이용한 컨테이너 크레인의 최적제어에 관한 연구)

  • During the operation of crane system in container yard, the objective is to transport the load to a goal position as quick as possible without rope oscillation. The container crane is generally operated by an expert operator, but recently an automatic control system with high speed and rapid transportation is required. Therefore, we developed an optimal controller which has to control the crane system with disturbances. In this paper, we present a design of optima 2-DOF PID controller for the control of gantry crane which has to control swing motion and trolley position. We used evolution strategy(ES) to tune the parameters of 2-DOF PID controller. It was compared with general PID controller. The computer simulations show that the proposed method has better performances than the other method.
