  • Lettuce seedlings used in this investigation of planting distance and labor-saving efficiency were first grown in 100-hole paper trays for 30 days. Seedling height for transplanting ranged from 3 cm to 6 cm and plants had 3 to 5 leaves. The beds prepared for transplanting were of the arched type and were 35-40 cm in width, 15-20 cm in bed height, and between-bed furrow width was 20 30 cm. Typical seedling planting depth with the transplanter was 4-5 cm, although depth was quite variable because of the irregularities of the ground. Total transplanting time with the transplanter varied from 2.6 to 2.7 hours per 10a, while it took 38.1 hours per 10a with conventional planting. It was critical that the condition of both the seedlings and the bed be adjusted to the transplanter before planting. Considering yield and inter-plant distance, optimal transplanter performance resulted with $60{\times}20cm$ or $60{\times}25cm$spacing, and the labor-saving efficiency using the transplanter was improved by over 93% of that of conventional planting by hand.

  • This study was conducted in order to find out the performance of rice transplanters in accordance with the change of the trans-planting days after pudding and the water depth flooding the paddy field at the time of transplanting : and thus to select the optimum paddy field preparation procedures for an efficient utilization of rice transplanters. The performance factors of the two different types of rice transplanters were measured during the first 6 consecutive days after puddling and with 3 different levels of water depth flooding the paddy fields. The results of this study were analysed and summarized as follows : 1. Wheel sinkage decreased very rapidly from 0 to 2 days after puddling and slowly from 3 to 5 days after puddling. 2. The depth of the test cone penetration decreased rapidly during the first few days after puddling. It was 17.8cm just after puddling, and decreased to 13.4cm one day after puddling. After 2 days, the rate of decrease was dampened, and after 5 days it kept constant value of 9.2cm. 3. Two days after puddling, the hill interval was 15.8cm (98.75% of the preset value) for broadcasted seedling rice transplanter with 3cm flooding depth : This value was the closest to the pre-adjusted value of 16cm. The general performance of broadcasted-seedling type rice transplanter was better than that of strip-seedling type rice transplanter. 4. Usually the working performance of a rice transplanter is evaluated with uniformity and adjustability of the hill intervals. The hill interval was the most uniform and closest to the pre-set value of 16cm when planted two days after puddling with 3cm of water depth. When it was inavoidable to plant 4 days after puddling with stripseedling type rice transplanter, it is advisable to let the water flooded somewhat deeper. 5. The percentage of missing hills including floating and burried seedlings was the highest just after puddling and ie decreased substancially until 3 days after puddling and then it increased again. Hence, the optimal time transplanting is to be between 2 and 3 days after puddling. 6. Better postures of planted seedlings were found when planter 2 days after puddling than 3 days after puddling. Six cm of flooding water depth always gave the best results with respect to the postures of planted seedlings. Broadcasted-seedling rice transplanter, in general, showed better posture of planted seedlings than did strip-seedling type rice transplanter. 7. Judging from the above results, the optimal conditions will be 3cm of flooding depth and transplanting between 2 and 3 days after puddling.

  • Green manure crops are organic materials that can supply organic matter and substitute chemical fertilizer, yet emit methane while being decomposed. Therefore, we experimented with different kinds of Green manure crops and tillage depth in order to decrease the amount of methane emitted when utilizing Green manure crops in paddy soil. The amount of methane emitted during the cultivation period of rice started to increase after transplanting and peaked at 63, and 74 days after transplanting, than decreased to almost none starting from 106 days. According to the kind of Green manure crop, it was highest in barley, then hairy vetch and chemical fertilizer. Depending on the tillage depth, the amount of methane emitted decreased by 22.5% in chemical fertilizer, 12.4% in hairy vetch and 11.7% in barley in 20cm tillage compared to 10cm tillage. The air temperature of methane test period was $30{\sim}40^{\circ}C$, and the soil temperature was more than about $2{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ lower than the air temperature. Due to the irrigation started before transplanting, the oxidation-reduction potential (Eh) of soil was rapidly reduced, and showed negative (-) values. Eh values mostly kept the range of -300~-500 mV during rice cultivation. It rapidly increased 106 days after transplanting. Rice yield the highest in hairy vetch and did not show differences according to tillage depth. Methane emission could be effectively reduced if the paddy soil was tilled by 20 cm during the application of hairy vetch.

  • The study was carried out to clarify reasonable production of healthy seedling, optimal Pot depth, and appropriate transplanting time, which can be deduced from understanding of seedling quality. Seedling quality results from growth of root and shoot, morphology and distribution of root system under influence of Pot depth during seedling growing period. Stem height, shoot dry weight, leaf area and leaf number were increased in proportion to depth of pots. Growth of shoot and root during seedling growing period showed the most dramatic development between 20th and 25th day after temporary planting. Root number increased as pot depth decrease and total root length and dry weight increased as pot depth increase. In 5cm pot, relative multiplication rate was higher and mean extension rate was lower than other depth of Pot. The limitation of pot volume in which rhizosphere was located enhance the development of roots of second and third order. At 20th days after temporary Planting root distribution was relatively uniform in length and development of adventitious root on stem base was poor as Pot depth decreased.

  • Weed control tests with 6 herbicides which seem to have selectivity of absorption by roots of rice were carried out by the rate of application, the depth of incorporation and the time of application in comparison with the after transplanting treatment of MO in SiCL soil. Soil-incorporated treatment of Ronstar, Saturn, TOK and Saturn·5 were applied before transplanting and soil surface treatment of Machete, PCP and MON·0385 were applied. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Initial crop injury and growth Soil surface treatment before transplanting of PCP of 1,000g ai/10a caused heavy initial injury, which was recovered from by about 50 days after application. Saturn-S at 4kg prod.110a caused slight crop injury sectionally, which was soon recovered from. And little crop injury was caused by other treatments. 2. Effect in weed control Excellent weed control of 90 to 97.7 percent was obtained, when measured 27 days after transplanting, by all the treatments. More than 90 percent weed control was maintained for about 73 days after transplanting by all the treatments of Ronstar and Saturn-S of 3 to 4kg prod./10a. The treatments of MON-0385 of 175g ai/10a and TOK of 280g ai/10a showed somewhat poor weed control. 3. Yield No reduction of yield was observed at all the plots except the non·weeded plot at which 11.4 percent yield reduction was observed compared with the hand weeding plot. The yield was increased by the 1 DBT and 2 DBT treatments of Machete of 210g ai/10a, the treatments of Ronstar of 60g ai/10a, when incorporated to the depth of 2.5 and 12cm, the incorporation treatment of Saturn-S of 3kg prod./10a and 1 DBT treatment of MON-0385 of 175g ai/10a.

  • This study was conducted in order to obtain the information for yield improvement in saline paddy. Saline concentration, growth and yield of rice, being subjected to different flooding times and days to transplanting were investigated in saline paddy with 0.35 % and 0.5 % salt concentration. Saline concentration of soil was increased to 0.41 % just after rotary in the paddy with 0.35 % salinity, but decreased to 0.20 % after 3 to 4 times of flooding treatment. And also that of surface water was decreased from 0.2 % to 0.11 %. Saline concentration of soil in 5cm depth was decreased to 0.31 % by one time flooding and to 0.22% by 3~4 times flooding but salinity below 7cm depth showed slight decrease. Seedling death was exceeded 37 % when transplanted one day after rotary in the paddy with 0.35% salinity. Death ratio was decreased to 20% by three times flooding and transplanting six days after rotary. In paddy with 0.5 % salinity, death ratio was high but the tendency was very similar to 0.35 % field. In 0.35 % saline paddy field, yields were increased by 14 % by three times flooding and transplanting six days after rotary as compared to one time flooding and transplanting are day after rotary. Therefore, 3 to 4 times flooding and transplanting 5 to 6 days after rotary are desirable in high saline paddy.

  • To cope with the mass-production and supply of plug seedling, the supply of transplanters is necessary. In the study, a transplanting test was carried out to find the optimum working condition in the mechanizd transplantation and to acquire the basic data for the improvement of transplanters by the research and analysis of working capacity of the local manual transplanters. The size of hopper affected transplanting stand and rate. Re-irrigation was required for the transplanted seedlings because they wilt 1 day after the transplanting if soil compaction is incomplete. Consequently, back-forth-left-right compaction method was good for soil covering and compaction. It may be thought to increase the amount of irrigation water at the time of transplanting by double-irrigation mechanism, but it needs to increase the larger water tank which makes the operation uneasy. So, assuming the working model by 1 or 2 operators with the machine size as small as possible, it seemed that eliminating of automatic irrigation method was desirable in view of efficiency. Though semiautomatic transplanter needs some structural improvements, it seemed still suitable for transplanting of plug seedlings such as 45-day red pepper seedlings in 128-hole tray and 25-day Chinese cabbage seedling in 128-hole tray. If traveling speed of the transplanter is limited to less than 14 m/min, with the transplanting depth of 2~3cm and transplanting space of 30cm.

  • The effect of different cultural patterns on the growth and herbicidal response of rice(Oryza sativa L.) and barnyardgrass(Echinochloa crus-galli var. oryzicola) was studied tinder direct-seeded rice and early rice seedling conditions. In dry-seeded rice condition, the growth of rice and barnyardgrass was the greatest in 3cm-seeding depth and 40% soil moisture, respectively. At 10 days after herbicide application, plant height of rice was severely inhibited in 1cm-seeding depth and 50% soil moisture, and the degree of inhibition was severer at application of pendi+molinate EC as compared to that of butachlor EC. On the other hand, plant heigth of barnyardgrass by treatment of herbicides was severely reduced regardless of seeding depth and soil moisture. The lengths of barnyardgrass mesocotyl and rice coleoptile were increased with increasing seeding depth and were severely inhibited by applied herbicides in 1cm-seeding depth under dry-seeded rice condition. The dry weight of rice at different leaching times after herbicides application showed slightly decreasing trend as the leaching time was delayed, but the growth of barnyardgrass was very severely inhibited regardless of the leaching time. In addition, the phytotoxicity of rice showed decreasing trend with the increase in transplanting depth and delay of application time under early rice seedling condition.

  • In order to find out the effect of five kinds of cultural treatments in fall crop production of potatoes the experiments were carried out with Simabara cultivar at Chonan in 1976. Sprouting of dormant seed pieces were induced by soaking in 2ppm GA and 250ppm Ethrel mixed solution for 60 minutes. Seed pieces with longer sprouts at transplanting, and increasing of urea(nitrogen) application from 10 to 30 Kg per 10a resulted better growth, yields, and quality. Application of total nitrogen at one time on 24th July(transplanting date) resulted lower emergence, yields, growth, and quality as compared with divided application on 24th July and 15th August and 5th September. Higher transplanting than 60$\times$20cm or 70$\times$17cm resulted slender growth and lower yields. Deeper mulch with wheat straw (from 4 to 12cm) induced lower maximal earth temperature in summer and higher minimal earth temperature in autumn.

  • The experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of different mulching materials on the growth and quality of oriental melon in protected cultivation. Soil temperature, plant growth and fruit quality were affected by different mulching materials, clear polyethylene (P.E.) film (control), clear inset between black P.E. film, green P.E. film. and recycled ethylene vinyl acetate (E.V.A.) film. The highest night soil temperature was at 20 cm depth under green P.E. film, but was at 5 cm depth under other materials. Difference of soil temperature as affected by mulching materials decreased with increasing soil depth. Plant height, number of nodes, leaf area index (LAI), crop growth rate (CGR), and relative growth rate (RGR) at 30 days after transplanting were significantly greater in the recycled E.V.A. film treatment than in the other treatments. Fresh weight of weeds growth under the mulching materials was not affected by mulching material at 30 days after transplanting. However, it was the greatest under clear P.E. film mulching at 90 days after transplanting. Harvesting time of recycled E.V.A. film was 2 days earlier than that of clear P.E. film. Difference in fruit weight and length, and soluble solid content were not affected by the mulching materials. Marketable yield was 2,426 kg.10a$^{-1}$ in recycled E.V.A. film treatment, which was 6% greater than in clear P.E. film treatment.
