The first step of performance-based design for transmission lines is the determination of wind fields as well as wind loads, which are largely depending on local wind climate and the surrounding terrain. Wind fields in a mountainous area are very different with that in a flat terrain. This paper firstly investigated both mean and fluctuating wind characteristics of a typical mountainous wind field by wind tunnel tests and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The speedup effects of mean wind and specific turbulence properties, i.e., turbulence intensity, power spectral density (PSD) and coherence function, are highlighted. Then a hybrid simulation framework for generating three dimensional (3D) wind velocity field in the mountainous area was proposed by combining the CFD and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method given the properties of the target turbulence field. Finally, a practical 220 kV transmission line was employed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed wind field generation framework and its role in the performance-based design. It was found that the terrain-induce turbulence effects dominate the performance-based structural design of transmission lines running through the mountainous area.
Linear cyclic systems (LCS's) are a class of systems whose dynamic behavior changes periodically. Such a cyclic behavior is ubiquitous in systems with fundamentally repetitive motion. Yet, the knowledge of the noise and vibration transmission paths in LCS's is quite limited due to the time-varying nature of their dynamics. The first part of this two-part paper derives a generic expression that describes how the noise and/or vibration are transmitted between two (or multiple) points in the LCS's. In Part II, experimental validation of the theoretical development of Part I is provided. The noise and vibration transmission paths of the scroll and rotary compressors (two typical LCS's) are examined to show that the LCS's indeed generate a series of amplitude modulated input signals at the output, where the carrier frequencies are harmonic multiples of the LCS' fundamental frequency. The criterion proposed in Part I to determine how well a given LCS can be approximated as a linear time-invariant systems (LTIS) is applied to the noise and vibration transmission paths of the two compressors. Furthermore, the implications of the experimental validations/applications are discussed in order to assess the applicability of the noise/vibration source and transmission path identification techniques based on the assumption that the system under consideration is linear and time-invariant.
As a shift control of automatic transmission was managed with the electronic control unit (ECU), shift quality which is a measure of shift shock during gear change has markedly improved. However, the initial clutch pressure control of the clutch filling phase should continue to rely on the predetermined control input since the input and output speeds are unchanged until the shifting process attains the inertia phase. It is critical to minimize the clutch response time and control the clutch pressure accurately at the end of clutch fill to achieve quick shift response and smoothness. Advanced transmission companies have adopted an auto calibration method which establishes the databases for the clutch piston fill-up attributes and the frictional characteristics of the disks. In this study, a distinctive auto calibration algorithm for forklift transmission under development is proposed and verified with the real-vehicle test. The experimental calibration results showed consistent turbine dynamics at the initial stage of shifts with the properly calibrated clutch-fill control parameters. By using this technique, it is necessary to finalize the shift control for the various operation conditions.
Time delay control(TDC) law has been recently suggested as an effective control technique for nonlinear time-varying systems with uncertain dynamics and/or unpredictable disturbances. This paper focuses on the applications of the TDC algorithm to torque control of an engine system and speed control of an engine/automatic transmission system. Through the stability analysis of the engien system based on TDC, determination of the appropriate time delay and control factor is investigated. It was revealed that the size of time delay of the TDC law should be greater than that of transport delay of the system for both stability and better control performance. Simulation and experimental results for the engine torque control and engine/automatic transmission speed control systems show both relatively good command following and disturbance rejection properties. However, TDC controller shows rather slow responses when applied to the system with large transport delay.
In this paper, the modeling and analysis of dynamic characteristics has been carried out for friction clutches and brakes in an automatic transmission. From the operating oil pressure generated by the valve-body, time delay by check valve and the movement of piston has been examined. Also torque capacity and torque transferred at the clutch is studied. Heat capacity and temperature distribution at the reaction plate of clutch are codeled by time-dependent, nonhomogeneous partial differential equation, and brake torque, brake time, and the amount of heat generated are investigated. It is found that the time delay at the check valve is very short but dominant at the spool.
We consider controller design problem to enhance shift quality for automatic transmission. A dynamic modeling related to shifting (mainly 2-3 up-shift) is constructed and nonlinear robust controllers are designed to reduce output torque during shifting. Suggesting a new hydraulic circuit enabling the direct clutch drive, the control activity is extended and more implementable than the conventional design. The designed robust controllers overcome the unmodeled dynamics and the uncertainty embending in the system. Moreover, the dynamic effect between the clutch pressure and the PWM valve duty is considered via singular perturbation technique.
Kinematic and dynamic characteristics of a Stewart platform based parallel manipulators are fixed once they are constructed. Thus parallel manipulators with various configurations are required to meet a variety of applications. In this research a parallel manipulator with variable platform (PMVP) has been developed, in which the length of the arm linking the platform center to the platform-leg contact point can be varied by an actuator. The workspace of the PMVP is larger than that of a traditional Stewart platform and especially the range in which the maximum orientation angles can be maintained is significantly expanded. Furthermore, the characteristics of force and moment transmission between the legs and platform can be adjusted to meet the requirements of various tasks. Kinematic and dynamics analysis was performed to verify the usefulness of the PMVP and the actual hardware was built to demonstrate the feasibility.
In this paper, using MATLAB SIMULINK, a generalized design methodology was suggested for multi pass transmission(MPT) by classifying the vehicle power train as prime mover, MPT and vehicle dynamics. This approach enables a designer to investigate the influence of each transmission component by simple combination of system components without changes of overall program. Using the design methodology, a MPT consisting of CVT, 2, clutches and reduction gears was designed for a braking energy regenerative flywheel hybrid vehicle. The CVT is essential in order to connect the engine and flywheel speed with the vehicle speed. For the purpose of smooth clutch operation, control algorithm was suggested by introducing dead zone for the clutch engagement. Using the SIMULINK model, performance of the flywheel hybrid vehicle with MPT was investigated. It was observed from the simulation results that the MPT vehicle showed better fuel economy, 47% than that of AT vehicle, 27% than that of CVT vehicle for ECE-15 driving cycle. Especially destinct fuel efficiency improvement was obtained for city driving cycle requiring more frequent stop and start.
This study presents an analytical model of hydraulic clutch system of a power shift transmission to analyze pressure modulation characteristics. A typical hydraulic clutch system was modeled by using AMESim in which the parameters of major components were measured for simulation. Test apparatus was established using the components of power shift and power shuttle clutches with instrumental equipment. The results of simulation and experiment were so close that the proposed analytical model in this study was validated. However the cylinder model analogized clutch dynamics need to be improved in future study. The effects of parameters of orifice diameter, accumulator stroke and oil temperature on pressure modulation were analyzed respectively. The results of parameter sensitivity analysis show that modulation time and set pressure can be easily adjusted by changing parameter values. It is also found that the hydraulic clutch system used in this study is so susceptible to oil temperature that cooling equipment is necessary.
