This experimental study concerns the characteristics of a transitional flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one rotating. The pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of a 0.2 % aqueous solution of sodium carbomethyl cellulose (CMC) at a inner cylinder rotational speed of $0{\sim}600$ rpm. The transitional flow has been examined by the measurement of pressure losses, to reveal the relation of the Reynolds numbers with the skin-friction coefficients, in the laminar and transitional flow regimes. The occurrence of transition has been checked by the gradient change of pressure losses and skin-friction coefficient with respect to the Reynolds numbers. The increasing rate of skin-friction coefficient due to the rotation is uniform for laminar flow regime, whereas it is suddenly reduced for transitional flow regime and, then, it is gradually declined for turbulent flow regime. Consequently, the critical(axial-flow) Reynolds number decrease as the rotational speed increases. Thus, the rotation of inner cylinder promotes the early occurrence of transition due to the onset of taylor vortices.

The present experimental and numerical investigations are performed for the characteristics of transitional flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one rotating. The pressure losses and skin- friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of water and glycerine-water solution (44%) with the inner cylinder rotating at speed of 0∼600 nm, respectively. The transitional flow has been examined by the measurement of pressure losses to reveal the relation of the Reynolds and Rossby numbers with the skin-friction coefficients. The occurrence of transition has been checked by the gradient changes of pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients with respect to the Reynolds numbers. The increasing rate of skin-friction coefficient due to the rotation is uniform for laminar flow regime, whereas it is suddenly reduced for transitional flow regime and, then, it is gradually declined for turbulent flow regime.
In the present study, a flow solver using a kinetic BGK scheme was developed for the compressible Navier-Stokes equation. The kinetic BGK scheme was used to simulate flow field from the continuum up to the transitional regime, because the kinetic BGK scheme can take into account the statistical properties of the gas particles in a non-equilibrium state. Various numerical simulations were conducted by the present flow solver. The laminar flow around flat plate and the hypersonic flow around hollow cylinder of flare shape in the continuum regime were numerically simulated. The numerical results showed that the flow solver using the kinetic BGK scheme can obtain accurate and robust numerical solutions. Also, the present flow solver was applied to the hypersonic flow problems around circular cylinder in the transitional regime and the results were validated against available numerical results of other researchers. It was found that the kinetic BGK scheme can similarly predict a tendency of the flow variables in the transitional regime.

On the basis of Nikuradse laboratory experiments. two transition flow regimes are defined with respect to the characteristics of boundary layer. One is the transitional turbulent flow which has a transitional characteristics between smooth turbulent flow and rough turbulent flow, and the other may be called as transitional laminar flow which has transitional features between laminar flow and turbulent flow. The laboratory results of Nikuradse are carefully re-examined, and the flow regions are clearly defined. The velocity profile of the transitional turbulent flow is described by newly formulated equation, and the Darcy-Weisbach friction coefficient for the transitional turbulent flow is determined based on the theoretical form of profile equation, which is far better accurate than Colebrook-White equation. Difficulties still arise for the description of velocity profile when the flow undergoes from laminar to turbulent. In this case a linear interpolation procedure is proposed for the estimation of friction coefficient.

In the present study, the velocity profiles and entrance length of developing transitional pulsating flows are investigated both analytically and experimentally in the entrance region of a square duct. The systems of conservation equations for transitional pulsating flows in a square duct are solved analytically by linearizing the non-linear convective terms. Analytical solutions are obtained in the form of infinite series for velocity pofiles. The experimental study for the air flow in a square duct(40mm*40mm*4000mm) is carried out to measure velocity profiles and other parameters by using a hot-wire anemometer with a data acquisition and processing system. The distribution of velocity profiles( $u_{ps}$ / $u_{m,ta}$) in the decelerating period is higher than in the accelerating period. The distribution of the axial component of the axial component of velocity in the transitional flow is nearly uniform in the central region of the duct, and decrease rapidly near the wall. The entrance length correlation of the transitional pulsating flows in a square duct is obtained to be $L_{e}$/ $D_{h}$=0.83 $A_{1}$R $e_{ta}$ /(.omega. sup+1)$^{2}$TEX>
The experimental study concerns the characteristics of a transitional flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ration of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one rotating. The pressure drops and skin-friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of water and that of glycerine-water solution (44%) at a inner cylinder rotational speed of $0{\sim}600$ rpm, respectively. The transitional flow have been examined by the measurement of pressure drops and the visualization of flow field, to reveal the relation of the Reynolds and Rossby numbers with the skin-friction coefficients and to understand the flow instability mechanism. The present results show that the skin-friction coefficients have the significant relation with the Rossby numbers, only for laminar regime. The occurrence of transition has been checked by the gradient changes of pressure drops and skin-friction coefficients with respect to the Reynolds numbers. The increasing rate of skin-friction coefficient due to the rotation is uniform for laminar flow regime, whereas it is suddenly reduced for transitional flow regime and, then, is gradually declined for turbulent flow regime. Consequently, the critical (axial-flow) Reynolds number decreases as the rotational speed increases. Thus, the rotation of inner cylinder promotes the early occurrence of transition due to the excitation of taylor vortices.

A Navier-Stokes code with a modified low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. turbulence model was used to study the unsteady transitional boundary layer flow due to rotor-stator interaction. The modification, proposed by Launder, to improve prediction of stagnation flows was incorporated to the low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. turbulence model by Fan-Lakshminarayana-Barnett. Numerical solution is shown to capture well the calmed laminar flow as well as the wake induced transitional strip due to rotor-stator interaction and shows improvement, in terms of onset of transition and its length, over previous Euler/boundary layer solution. The turbulent kinetic energy shows local maximum along the upstream rotor wake in the wake induced transitional strip and this characteristics is observed untill the end of transition. The wake induced strip also shown apparent even in the laminar sublayer as the upstream rotor wake penetrates inside the boundary layer.

Flow characteristics in transitional boundary layers on a flat plate were experimentally investigated under three different freestream conditions i. e. uniform flow with 0.1 % and 3.7% freestream turbulent intensity and cylinder-wake with 3.7% maximum turbulent intensity. Instantaneous streamwise velocities in laminar, transitional and turbulent boundary layers were measured by I-type hot-wire probe. For estimation of wall shear stresses on the flat plate, measured mean velocities near the wall were applied to the principle of Computational Preston Tube Method (CPM). Distributions of skin friction coefficients were reasonably predicted in all developed boundary layers. Intermittency profiles, which were estimated using Conditional Sampling Technique in transitional boundary layers, were also consistent with previously published data. It was predicted that the incoming turbulent intensity had more influence on transition onset point and transition process than freestream turbulent intensity existed just over the transition region. It was also confirmed that non-turbulent and turbulent profiles in transitional boundary layers could not be simply treated as Blasius and fully turbulent profiles.

In this paper an experimental investigation of characteristics of developing transitional unsteady flows in a square-sectional 180。 curved duct are presented. The experimental study using air is carried out to measure axial velocity profiles secondary flow velocity profiles and entrance length by using Laser Do ppler Velocimeter(LDV) system. The flow development is found to depend upon Dean number dimensionless angular frequency velocity amplitude ration and cur-vature ratio. Of special interest is the secondary flow generated by centrifugal effects in the plane of the cross-section of the duct. The secondary flows are strong and complicate at entrance region. The entrance length of transitional pulsating flow is obtained to 120。 of bended angle of duct in this experimental conditions.
