A full two-dimensional MOSFET simulator utilizing the Mixed Particle Monte Carlo method is introduced. Particle simulation for both electrons and holes are self-consistently coupled with Poisson 's equation. To demonstrate the performance of the simulator, steady state and transient state solutions of the terminal characteristics and the internal physical quantities are obtained for 0.25$\mu$m MOSFETs with three different structures` conventional single drain, LDD and GOLD MOSFET structures.
A pressure-based Navier-Stokes numerical solver was used to compare solutions of the k-ε/RNG k-ε turbulence models. An efficient grid generation scheme, the transient grid generation with full boundary control, was used to solve the flows in the tip clearance region. Results indicate that the calculations using k-ε model captures various phenomena related to the tip clearance with good accuracy.
This study investigated one-dimensional vertical infiltration to an unsaturated residual soil by numerical solutions, FDM. In order to estimate the parameters needed for numerical analysis, tire soil-water characteristic curve(SWCC) of Shinnae-dong soil, one of the most typical residual soils in Korea, were experimentally obtained. Then, the statistical analysis for obtaining the SWCC was performed. The numerical solution to the linearized governing equation for unsaturated groundwater flow provides the infiltration characteristics for the unsaturated residual soil represented by transient pressure profiles and water contents profiles.

Wall/floor intersection is important parts of a building envelope system. These intersections can be sources of thermal bridging effects and/or moisture condensation problems. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the thermal performance of wall/floor intersection. In particular, two-dimensional steady-state and transient solutions of the heat conduction within the wall/floor joint are presented. Various insulation configurations are considered to determine the magnitude of heat transfer increase due to wall/floor joint construction.
The objective of this study is to formulate a general 3D material-structural analysis framework for the thermomechanical behavior of steel-concrete structures in a fire environment. The proposed analysis framework consists of three sequential modeling parts: fire dynamics simulation, heat transfer analysis, and a thermomechanical stress analysis of the structure. The first modeling part consists of applying the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) where coupled CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) with thermodynamics are combined to realistically model the fire progression within the steel-concrete structure. The goal is to generate the spatial-temporal (ST) solution variables (temperature, heat flux) on the surfaces of the structure. The FDS-ST solutions are generated in a discrete form. Continuous FDS-ST approximations are then developed to represent the temperature or heat-flux at any given time or point within the structure. An extensive numerical study is carried out to examine the best ST approximation functions that strike a balance between accuracy and simplicity. The second modeling part consists of a finite-element (FE) transient heat analysis of the structure using the continuous FDS-ST surface variables as prescribed thermal boundary conditions. The third modeling part is a thermomechanical FE structural analysis using both nonlinear material and geometry. The temperature history from the second modeling part is used at all nodal points. The ABAQUS (2003) FE code is used with external user subroutines for the second and third simulation parts in order to describe the specific heat temperature nonlinear dependency that drastically affects the transient thermal solution especially for concrete materials. User subroutines are also developed to apply the continuous FDS-ST surface nodal boundary conditions in the transient heat FE analysis. The proposed modeling framework is applied to predict the temperature and deflection of the well-documented third Cardington fire test.
This work reports a set of approximate analytical solutions describing the initial transient process of close-contact melting between a rectangular parallelepiped solid and a flat plate on which either constant temperature or constant heat flux is imposed. Not only relative motion of the solid block tangential to the heating plate, but also the density difference between the solid and liquid phase is incorporated in the model. The thin film approximation reduces the force balance between the solid weight and liquid pressure, and the energy balance at the melting front into a simultaneous ordinary differential equation system. The normalized model equations admit compactly expressed analytical solutions which include the already approved two-dimensional solutions as a subset. In particular, the normalized liquid film thickness is independent of all pertinent parameters, thereby facilitating to define the transition period of close-contact melting. A unique behavior of the solid descending velocity due to the density difference is also resolved by the present solution. A new geometric function which alone represents the three-dimensional effect is introduced, and its properties are clarified. One of the representative results is that heat transfer is at least enhanced at the expense of the increase in friction as the cross-sectional shape deviates from the square under the same contact area.
The paper involves the study on the elastic and elasto-plastic stress wave propagation in the 1-D and 2-D solid media. The Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics equations governing the elastic and elasto-plastic large deformation dynamic response of solid structures are presented. The proposed additional stress points are introduced in the formulation to mitigate the tensile instability inherent in the SPH approach. Both incremental rate approach and leap-frog algorithm for time integration are introduced and the new solution algorithm is developed and implemented. Two examples on stress wave propagation in aluminium bar and 2-D elasto-plastic steel plate are included. Results from the proposed SPH approach are compared with available analytical values and finite element solutions. The comparison illustrates that the stress wave propagation problems can be effectively solved by the proposed SPH method. The study shows that the SPH simulation is a reliable and robust tool and can be used with confidence to treat transient dynamics such as linear and non-linear transient stress wave propagation problems.
