  • In this paper, the transient brake time was studied on the van type vehicle with accelerometer. Experiments were carried out on the asphalt(new and polished), unpacked road(earth and gravel) and on wet or dry road conditions. The transient brake time is not effected bzy the vehicle speed. The transient brake time is about 0.41$\sim$0.43second on the asphalt road surface and the error range is within 0.1$\sim$0.16second. For the asphalt road condition, the transient brake time is not effected by both new asphalt road surface and the polished asphalt road surface. With compared by dry and wet road surface condition, the transient brake time of wet condition is longer than dry road condition and compared with unpacked road condition and packed road condition, unpacked road condition is shorter than packed road condition. It is considered that the transient brake time is effected by the road surface fraction coefficient. In other words, the transients brake time increases as friction coefficient decreases.

  • A numerical and experimental studies are carried out to investigate the transient heat transfer characteristics of 5kWth dish type solar air receiver. Measured solar radiation and temperatures at several different locations are used as boundary conditions for numerical simulation. Many parameters' effects (reflectivity of the reflector, the thermal conductivity of the receiver body, transmissivity of the quartz window, etc.) on the thermal performance are investigated. Discrete Transfer Method is used to calculate the radiation heat exchange in the receiver. A transient heat transfer model is developed and the rate of radiation, convection and conduction heat transfer are calculated. Comparing the experimental and numerical results, good agreement is obtained. Using the numerical model, the transient heat transfer characteristics of volumetric air receiver for dish type solar thermal systems are known and the transient thermal performance of the receiver can be estimated.

  • The power characteristics of the Mg-Air fuel cell were investigated with regard to variation of load conditions. The types of load current using for the Mg-Air fuel cell with 10% NaCl electrolyte were step type, ramp type and pulse type. It was found that transient phenomena occurred in the step current load, which is due to activate of the oxidation-reduction reaction process. And the transient time increase with the load current increase. In the load current of ramp type, the slop of voltage drop increased with current load slop ${\alpha}$ increase. The load voltage and power decreased according to the pulse period of load current decrease were attributed to the metal sludges.

  • In this study, structural vibration analyses of a smart unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) have been conducted considering dynamic hub-loads of tilt rotor. Practical computational structural dynamics technique based on the finite element method is applied using MSC/NASTRAN. The present UAV(TR-S5-04) finite element model is constructed as a full three-dimensional configuration with different fuel conditions and tilting angles for helicopter, transient and airplane flight modes. In addition, the 3-dimensional supporting equipment structures of electronic devices are considered for vibration analysis. As the results of this study, transient structural displacements and accelerations are presented in detail. Moreover, vibration characteristics of structural parts and installed equipments are investigated for different fuel conditions and tilting angles.

  • Potential fuel economy improvements and environmental legislation have renewed interest in Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines. Computational models of fuel injection and mixing processes pre-ignition are being developed for engine optimisation. These highly transient thermofluid models require verification against temporally and spatially resolved data-sets. The authors have previously established the capability of PDA to provide suitable temporally and spatially resolved spray characteristics such as mean droplet size, velocity components and qualitative mass distribution. This paper utilises this data-set to assess the predictive capability of a numerical model for GDI spray prediction. After a brief description of the two-phase model and discretisation sensitivity, the influence of initial spray conditions is discussed. A minimum of 5 initial global spray characteristics are required to model the downstream spray characteristics adequately under isothermal, atmospheric conditions. Verification of predicted transient spray characteristics such as the hollow-cone, cone collapse, head vortex, stratification and penetration are discussed, and further improvements to modelling GDI sprays proposed.

  • Numerical simulations of 1D Burgers equation and 2D sloshing problem were carried out to study numerical discrepancy between serial and parallel computations. The numerical domain was decomposed into 2 and 4 subdomains for parallel computations with message passing interface. The numerical solution of Burgers equation disclosed that fully explicit boundary conditions used on subdomains of parallel computation was responsible for the numerical discrepancy of transient solution between serial and parallel computations. Two dimensional sloshing problems in a rectangular domain were solved using OpenFOAM. After a lapse of initial transient time sloshing patterns of water were significantly different in serial and parallel computations although the same numerical conditions were given. Based on the histograms of pressure measured at two points near the wall the statistical characteristics of numerical solution was not affected by the number of subdomains as much as the transient solution was dependent on the number of subdomains.

  • This paper presents an analytical solution to predict the transient temperature distribution in fillet arc welding including the effect of molten metal. The solution is obtained by solving a transient three-dimensional heat conduction equation with convection boundary conditions on the surfaces of a plate, and mapping the infinite plate onto the fillet weld geometry with energy equation. The electric heat input on the fillet weld and on the infinite plate is assumed to have a combination of two bivariate Gaussian distribution. To check the validity of the solution. FCA welding experiments were performed under various welding conditions. The actual isotherms of the weldment cross-sections at various distances from the arc start point are compared with those of simulation result.

  • Autoreclosure provides a means of improving power transmitting ability and system stability. Conventional reclosure adopts the fixed dead time interval strategy, where the reclosure is activated after a time delay to restore the system to normal as quickly as possible without regard to the system conditions. However, these simple techniques cannot provide optimal operating performance. This paper presents an adaptive autoreclosure algorithm including variable dead time, optimal reclosure, phase-by-phase reclosure and emergency extended equal-area criterion (EEEAC) algorithm in order to improve system stability. The reclosure algorithm performs the operations that are attuned to the power system conditions. The proposed adaptive reclosure algorithm is verified and tested using ATP/EMTP MODELS, and the simulation results show that the system oscillations are reduced and the transient stability is enhanced by employing the proposed adaptive reclosure algorithm.

  • This simulator is developed for the analysis of a MOSFET based on Thermally Coupled Energy Transport Model(TCETM). The simulator has the ability to calculate not only stationary characteristics but also non - stationary characteristics of a MOSFET. It solves basic semiconductor devices equations including Possion equation, current continuity equations for electrons and holes, energy balance equation for electrons and heat flow equation, using finite difference method. The conventional semiconductor device simulation technique, based on the Drift-Diffusion Model (DDM), neglects the thermal and other energy-related properties of a miniaturized device. I, therefore, developed a simulator based on the Thermally Coupled Energy Transport Model (TCETM) which treats not only steady-state but also transient phenomena of such a small-size MOSFET. In particular, the present paper investigates the breakdown characteristics in transient conditions. As a result, we found that the breakdown voltage has been largely underestimated by the DDM in transient conditions.

  • In this study, an explicit transient analysis program considering material and geometric nolinearities has been developed and used to analyze the dynamic behaviors of circular, parabolic, sinusoidal and catenary arches according to the change of shapes and boundary conditions. To understand dynamic behaviors of arches, first of all, the results of free vibration analysis for four kinds of arches are discussed. The results of transient analysis under impact loads we discussed in respect of boundary condition, change of height, and arch-shape. The dynamic behaviors of arches by nonlinear transient analysis considering both material and geometric nolinearities are also discussed.
