The volumetric solar receiver is a key element of solar power plants using air. The solar flux distribution inside the receiver should be a priori known for its heat transfer analysis. Previous works have not considered characteristics of the solar flux although they change with radiative properties of receiver materials and receiver geometries. A numerical method, which is based on the Monte Carlo ray-tracing method, was developed in the current work. The solar flux distributions inside multi-channeled volumetric solar receivers were calculated when light is concentrated at the KIER solar furnace. It turned out that 99 percentage of the concentrated solar energy is absorbed within 15mm channel length for the channel radius smaller than 1.5mm. If the concentrated light is assumed to be diffuse, the absorbed solar energy at the channel entrance region is over predicted while the light penetrates more deeply into the channel. Once the presented results are imported into the heat transfer analysis, one could examine effects of material property and geometry of the receiver on air temperature profiles.
Exponential window function Is widely used In impact hammer testing to reduce leakage error as well as to get a good S/N ratio. The larger its decaying rate is, the more effectively the leakage errors are reduced. But if the decay rate of the exponential window is too large, the FRF is distorted. And the modal parameters of the system can not be exactly identified by modal analysis technique. Therefore, it is a difficult problem to determine proper decay rate in impact hammer testing. In this paper, amount of the FRF distortion caused by exponential window is theoretically uncovered. A new circle fitting method is also proposed so that the modal parameters are directly extracted from impulse response spectrum distorted by the exponential-windowed impulse response data. The results by the conventional and proposed circle fitting method are compared through a numerical example.
MEMS technology applying to the sensors and micro-electro devices is complete system. These microsystems are made by variable processes. Especially, the mentallization process has very important functions to transfer the power operating the sensor and signal induced from sensor part. But in the structures of MEMS the local stress concentration and deformation are often yielded by an irregular geometrical shape and different constraint. Therefore, this paper studies the effect of supporting type and thickness ratio about thin film of the substrate on the residual stress variation when the thermal loads is applied to the multi-layer thin film fabricated by metallization process. Specimens were made from several materials such as Al, Au and Cu. Then, uniform thermal load was applied, repeatedly. The residual stress was measured by FE Analysis and nano-indentation method using AFM. Generally, the specimen made of Al induced the larger residual stress than that of made of other materials. Specimen made of Cu and Au having the low thermal expansion coefficient induces the minimum residual stress. Similarly, the lowest indentation length was measured by nano-indentation method in the Si/Au/Cu specimen. Particularly, clusters are created in the specimen made of Cu by thermal load and the indentation length became increasingly large by cluster formation.
This paper deals with the estimation of the maximum flexural crack widths using minimum crack spacing for reinforced concrete members. The proposed method utilizes the conventional crack and bond-slip theories as well as bonding transfer length and effects of creep and shrinkage between the reinforcement and concrete. An analytical equation for the estimation of the maximum flexural crack width is formulated as a function of mean bond stress. The validity, accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are established by comparing the analytical results with the experimental data and the major code specifications (e.g., ACI, CEB-FIP Model code, Eurocode 2, etc.). The analytical results of analysis presented in this paper indicate that the proposed method can be effectively estimated the maximum flexural crack width of the reinforced concrete members.
A method for weighing fruits without separating them from stem is proposed. The base of stem is fixed and a fruit or a cluster of fruits is forced to vibrate. The approximated vibration model is constructed by the use of Transfer Matrix Method. The natural frequency (w) in this model can be represented as a function of weight elements, and the length and stiffness of branch elements of stem. With this function, only w is possible to measure. However, several small weights whose weights are known are attached to weight elements in various combinations. From these equations, unknown parameters are determined so that the weight of each fruit can be obtained by a non-destructive method.
This article proposes analytical solutions for sound radiation from radial vibration modes of a thick annular disk. Structural eigensolutions are calculated using the transfer matrix method. The far-field sound pressure distribution is obtained using two alternate methods. In the first method, pressure is calculated using the Rayleigh integral technique. The second method treats sound radiating radial surfaces as cylindrical radiators of finite length. The Sinc function approach is employed for calculations. Acoustic powers and radiation efficiencies of radial modes are also determined from the far-field sound pressure calculations. Analytical predictions match well with measured data as well as computational results from a finite element code in terms of structural eigensolutions and from a boundary element code in terms of sound pressure, directivity etc.
Recently, regulations of the government and concerns of people give rise to the interest in exhaust and intake noise of passenger car as much as other vehicles. In these demands, performance prediction software with hybrid method was developed at first. Secondly, robust design was used for improving the noise reduction capacity of intake system with the performance prediction software. On the basis of the existing design, length and radios of each component that was thought to effect on the capacity of intake system was selected. The factors were arranged by using L18 table of orthogonal array and optimum value was obtained.
Cylindrical film-cooling hole is formulated numerically and optimized to enhance film-cooling effectiveness. The Kriging method is used an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of fluid and heat transfer with shear stress transport model. The hole length-to-diameter ratio and injection angle are chosen as design variables and spatially averaged film-cooling effectiveness is considered as objective function which is to be maximized. Twelve training points obtained by Latin Hypercube Sampling for two design variables. Optimum shape shows the film-cooling effectiveness increased.
This study presents critical buckling load optimization of the axially graded layered uniform columns. In the first place, characteristic equations for the critical buckling loads for all boundary conditions are obtained using the transfer matrix method. Then, for each case, square of this equation is taken as a fitness function together with constraints. Due to explicitly unavailable objective function for the critical buckling loads as a function of segment length and volume fraction of the materials, especially for the column structures with higher segment numbers, initially, prescribed value is assumed for it and then the design variables satisfying constraints are searched using Differential Evolution (DE) optimization method coupled with eigen-value routine. For constraint handling, Exterior Penalty Function formulation is adapted to the optimization cycle. Different boundary conditions are considered. The results reveal that maximum increments in the critical buckling loads are attained about 20% for cantilevered and pinned-pinned end conditions and 18% for clamped-clamped case. Finally, the strongest column structure configurations will be determined. The scientific and statistical results confirmed efficiency, reliability and robustness of the Differential Evolution optimization method and it can be used in the similar problems which especially include transcendental functions.
This paper presents numerical analysis and design optimization of various turbine blade cooling techniques with three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) analysis. The fluid flow and heat transfer have been performed using ANSYS-CFX 11.0. A fan-shaped hole for film-cooling has been carried out to improve film-cooling effectiveness with the radial basis neural network method. The injection angle of hole, lateral expansion angle of hole and ratio of length-to-diameter of the hole are chosen as design variables and spatially averaged film-cooling effectiveness is considered as an objective function which is to be maximized. The impingement jet cooling has been performed to investigate heat transfer characteristic with geometry variables. Distance between jet nozzle exit and impingement plate, inclination of nozzle and aspect ratio of nozzle hole are considered as geometry variables. The area averaged Nusselt number is evaluated each geometry variables. A rotating rectangular channel with staggered array pin-fins has been investigated to increase heat transfer performance ad to decrease friction loss using KRG modeling. Two non-dimensional variables, the ratio of the eight diameter of the pin-fins and ratio of the spacing between the pin-fins to diameter of the pin-fins selected as design variables. A rotating rectangular channel with staggered dimples on opposite walls are formulated numerically to enhance heat transfer performance. The ratio of the dimple depth and dimple diameter are selected as geometry variables.
