  • In this study, PZT-5A green sheet were prepared by using tape casting technique, and the piezoelectric properties of PZT-5A by variation of sintering temperature was investigated. After, design and piezoelectric properties of 2-2 piezocomposite ultrasonic transducers by menas of the FEA. The acoustic impedance and piezoelectric charge constant of the 2-2 type piezocomposite transducer decreased proportionally due to the density decrease caused by the PZT volume fraction decrease. The piezocomposite acoustic impedance were 7~3 MRayl between 0.6 and 0.2 allowing it to be used for a ultrasonic transducer. The resonance characteristics and the electro-mechanical coupling factor were the best when the volume fraction PZT was 0.6. The PZT volume fraction shows the fixed value, 0.6~0.65, approximately within the range between 0.2 and 0.6 while it is increased to decreased over the range. The result of the experiment above confirmed that the 2-2 piezoelectric composites could be used as the ultrasonic transducers.

  • Ultrasonic guided waves have attracted increasing attention for non-destructive testing (NDT) and structural health monitoring (SHM) of bridge cables. They offer advantages like single measurement, wide coverage of acoustical field, and long-range propagation capability. To design defect detection systems, it is essential to understand how guided waves propagate in cables and how to select the optimal excitation frequency and mode. However, certain cable characteristics such as multiple wires, anchorage, and polyethylene (PE) sheath increase the complexity in analyzing the guided wave propagation. In this study, guided wave modes for multi-wire bridge cables are identified by using a semi-analytical finite element (SAFE) technique to obtain relevant dispersion curves. Numerical results indicated that the number of guided wave modes increases, the length of the flat region with a low frequency of L(0,1) mode becomes shorter, and the cutoff frequency for high order longitudinal wave modes becomes lower, as the number of steel wires in a cable increases. These findings were used in design of transducers for defect detection and selection of the optimal wave mode and frequency for subsequent experiments. A magnetostrictive transducer system was used to excite and detect the guided waves. The applicability of the proposed approach for detecting and locating wire breakages was demonstrated for a cable with 37 wires. The present ultrasonic guided wave method has been found to be very responsive to the number of brokenwires and is thus capable of detecting defects with varying sizes.

  • Parametric array transducers are used for long-range and highly directional communication in an underwater environments. The power amplifiers for parametric array transducers should have sufficient linear output characteristic and high efficiency to avoid communication errors, system heating, and fuel problems. But the conventional power amplifier with fixed source voltage is very low efficient due to large power loss by the big difference between the fixed source voltage and the amplifier output voltage. Thus to solve the problems this paper proposes the high efficiency power amplifier for parametric array transducers. The proposed power amplifier ensures high linearity of output characteristic by utilizing the push-pull class B type amplifier and furthermore gets high efficiency by applying the envelope tracking technique that variable source voltage tracks the envelope of the amplified signal. Also the paper suggests the detailed circuit topology and design guideline of class B push-pull type amplifier and variable output voltage AC/DC converter. Its characteristics are verified by the detailed simulation and experimental results.

  • Piezoresistive pressure sensor have become the successfully-commercialized MEMS product and the related technologies have been well developed over the past decades. Regarding the design methodology, however, the coupled-physics FEM analyses of the transducer itself and the signal-processing circuitry design based on the conventional EDA are separated and both of the analyses were sequentially processed for the full design of the pressure sensor. For the fast and effective R&D, new design methodology is proposed in this paper where the FEM results are linked to the EDA environment and therefore most of the design works can be done in the EDA environments, which means the time-consuming FEM analyses can be minimized. In order to verify the proposed approach, a typical piezoresistive pressure sensor having the silicon diaphragm and piezoresistors was modeled and analyzed based on the proposed methodology. The verification results showed that the simulated results were matched well with the measured data within the 7% difference while the simulation time was reduced less than 5% compared to the conventional methodology. Through the proposed approach, various types of the piezoresistive pressure sensors can be developed in more effective way.

  • This paper was studied as the following steps. 1) The relation between the brightness and the AC voltage on the EL cell made from ZnS powder was investigated. 2) The relation among the photocurrent, the applied AC voltage and the illumination on the protoconductive cell which was made of CdS powder, was examined. 3) From the above relations approximate equations were made. Also the theoretical gain equation of the light amplifier was derived. 4) Comparing the theoretical gain value to the experimental gain value of the light amplifier which was composed of EL and PC cells, it was come to the conclusion that the gain equation was correct within 2% errors and was useful to comprehensibility of the light amplifier and to design of it.

  • The engine cooling system is a device that maintains the temperature in the engine room at an appropriate level by driving a cooling fan when the temperature in the engine room generated during the vehicle operation occurs over a certain temperature. In recent years, the vehicle cooling system has changed to an electronic system. Therefore, in this paper, we design and develop a hall sensor based electronic engine cooling system. In this paper, a hall sensor module and an actuator module for engine cooling control system are designed. In order to verify the performance of the designed module, the magnetic field control was verified through the simulation of the diameter and the head of the coil.

  • Distributed piezoeletric sensor and actuator have been designed for efficient vibration control of a cantilevered beam. Both PZT and PVDF have been used in this study, the former as an actuator and the latter as a sensor for the integrated structure. We have optimized the position and the size of the PZT actuator and the electrode shape of the PVDF sensor. Finite element method is used to model the structure and the optimized actuators, we have designed the active electrode width of the PVDF sensor along the span of the beam. Actuator design is based on the criterion of minimizing the system energy in the control modes under a given initial condition. Model control forces for the residual (uncontrolled) modes have been minimized during the sensor design to minimize the observation spill-over. Genetic algorithm and sequential quadratic programming technique have been utilized as an optimization scheme. Discrete LQG control law has been applied to the integrated structure for real time vibration control. Performance of the sensor, the actuator, and the integrated smart structure has been demonstrated by experiments.

  • In this study. we propose a wide bandwidth surface acoustic wave (SAW) motor by design of Inter Digital Transducer (IDT). SAW motor has several benefits compared with preexisted actuator. But it has narrow bandwidth, which causes the lower performance. To widen the bandwidth, the change of IDT structure was proposed, which is slanted IDT and since function apodization. The frequency responses were compared original uniform IDT and changed IDT. And the time responses were compared original uniform IDT and changed IDT. As a result, the feasibility of wide bandwidth SAW motor was certified.

  • In this paper, the design method and experimental validation for the two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) electromagnetic energy harvester are presented. The harvester consists of the rigid body suspended by four tension springs and electromagnetic transducers. Once the two resonant frequencies and the mass properties are specified, both the constant and the positions for the springs can be determined in the closed form. The designed harvester can locate two resonant peaks close to each other and forms the extended frequency bandwidth for power harvesting. Halbach magnet array is also introduced to enhance the output power. In the experiment, two resonant frequencies are measured at 34.9 and 37.6 Hz and the frequency bandwidth improves to 5 Hz at the voltage level of 207.9 mV. The normalized peak power of 4.587 mW/G2 is obtained at the optimal load resistor of 367 Ω.
