A design method of the network for automated transporters mounted on rails is addressed for automated container terminals. In the network design, the flow directions of some path segments as well as routes of transporters for each flow requirement must be determined, while the total transportation and waiting times are minimized. This study considers, for the design of the network, the waiting times of the transporters during the travel on path segments, intersections, transfer points below the quay crane (QC), and transfer points at the storage yard. An algorithm, which is the combination of a modified Dijkstra's algorithm for finding the shortest time path and a queuing theory for calculating the waiting times during the travel, is proposed. The proposed algorithm can solve the problem in a short time, which can be used in practice. Numerical experiments showed that the proposed algorithm gives solutions better than several simple rules. It was also shown that the proposed algorithm provides satisfactory solutions in a reasonable time with only average 7.22% gap in its travel time from those by a genetic algorithm which needs too long computational time. The performance of the algorithm is tested and analyzed for various parameters.
This study aims to develop mathematical models for estimating saturation flow rates at the stop line of signalized intersection due to Workzones in the vicinity, since the saturation flow rate is the most critical parameter in capacity analysis for signalized intersections. It was found by reference review that saturation flow rates are sensitively influenced by the location of Workzone, the number of lanes, cycle length and effective green time. Extensive microscopic simulation runs were also performed and compared to the those of mathematical models for model verification. Mathematical models were developed based on traffic flow theory and dualizing them by the location of workzones. And then each result produced by changing important parameter values was carefully examined and analyzed. Small but consistent differences in saturation flow rate values between mathematical models and simulations exist. However, the pattern of changes in saturation flow rates depending on each variable was similar.
The study on how visitors of a museum view exhibition is necessary for providing quality experience to the visitors. Previous studies on the movement of visitors of a museum focused on qualitative analysis after the follow-up survey. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to find out various ways to use quantitative analysis methods on the movement of visitors in the museum. Quantitative analysis of the exhibition place and movement of visitors was conducted using programs to produce quantitative results from the space analysis including VAE, VGA, V-ERAM and ESA. VAE and VGA helped to understand the spatial structure and ESA was helpful to predict how the flow of human traffic would be in the museum. If the programs are used all together, it would be easier to quantitatively predict how the How of human traffic would be in an exhibition room. However, this study is in its infancy, so following studies are necessary based on more data and results of analysis in the future.
Current highway design standards is based on the safety under the free flow condition. The length of deceleration lane is also determined in terms of the deceleration distance which is necessary for the driers to adjust the vehicle speed from the speed limit on the main road to that on the exit ramp of the interchange. However, the queues are frequently developed on the deceleration, and the following vehicles to exit must decelerate on the main road. It may cause delay on the main road and traffic accidents. This study is to suggest a methodology to minimize such problems with the shock-wave theory. The queue length of exiting vehicles can be estimated by the design speeds, traffic volumes of main road and the exiting ramp, and the countermeasures to the operational problems. According to the results, the queue length can be shortened to 80% by upgrading the design speed of exit ramp as the amount of 10km/h. Fifty percent of queue length can be shortened by adding an additional lane on the ramp to two lanes.
A computer algorithm is presented that evaluate the performance of coordinated signal timing plans for the signalized arterials. The procedures calculating delay and stops are based on Michalopoulos's analytical model derived from shock wave theory. The delay-offset relationship predicted from the algorithm produced consistent results with the delays venerated by TRANSYT-7F. From performance test, the delays estimated using the proposed a1gorithm are shown to be sensitive to the quality of progression as well as to traffic demand, link length, and turning flow ratio from upstream signal.
In this paper, two classes of functions, involving a parameter and the classical Euler gamma function, and two functions, involving the classical Euler gamma function, are verified to be logarithmically completely monotonic in $(-\frac{1}{2},\infty)$ or $(0,\infty)$; some inequalities involving the classical Euler gamma function are deduced and compared with those originating from certain problems of traffic flow, due to J. Wendel and A. Laforgia, and relating to the well known Stirling's formula.
Since late 1970s. one of the principal research areas in transportation problem is dynamic traffic assignment (DTA). Although many models have been developed regarding DTA, yet they have some limits of describing real traffic patterns. This reason comes from the fact that DTA model has the time varying constraints such as state equation, flow propagation constraint, first in first out(FIFO) rule and queuing evolution. Thus, DTA model should be designed to satisfy these constraints as well as dynamic route choice condition, dynamic user equilibrium. In this respect, link-based DTA models have difficulty in satisfying such constraints because they have to satisfy the constraints for each link, while path-based DTA models may easily satisfy them. In this paper we develop a path-based DTA model. The model includes point queue theory to describe the queue evolution and simulation loading method for depicting traffic patterns in more detail. From a numerical test, the model shows promising results.
This study proposed a Variable Speed Limits(VSL) algorithm to use traffic information based on Cumulative Demand-Capacity Analysis and evaluated its performance. According to the analysis result, the total of delay consisted of 3 separate parts. There was no change in total travel time although the total of delay decreased. These effects was analysed theoretically and then, evaluated through VISSIM, a microscopic simulator. VISSIM simulation results show almost same as those of theoretical analysis. Furthermore in SSAM analysis with VISSIM simulation log, the number of high risk collisions decreased 36.0 %. However, the total delay decrease effect is not real meaning of decrease effect because the drivers' desired speed is same whether the VSL model is operated or not. Nevertheless this VSL model maintains free flow speed for longer and increases the cycle of traffic speed fluctuation. In other words, this is decrease of delay occurrence and scale. The decrease of speed gap between upstream and downstream stabilizes the traffic flow and leads decrease number of high risk collision. In conclusion, we can expect increase of safety through total delay minimization according to this VSL model.
The lane-change behavior usually consists of discretionary lane-change and mandatory lane-change types. For the first type, drivers change lanes selectively to maintain their own driving condition and the second type is the case that the drivers must change the current lane, which can occur in recurrent congestion sections like merging and weaving sections. The mandatory lane-change behavior have a great effect on the operation condition of freeway. In this paper, we first generate data such as traffic volumes, speeds, densities, and the number of lane-change within the merging and weaving sections using the data of individual vehicle collected from time-lapse aerial photography. And then, the data is divided into the stable and congested flow by analyzing the speed variation pattern of individual vehicles. In addition, the number of lane-changing from ramp to mainline within every 30-meter interval is investigated before and after traffic congestion at study sites and the distribution of lane-changing at each 30-meter point is analyzed to identify the variation of lane-changing ratio depending on the stable and congested flows. To recognize the effect of mainline flow influenced by ramp flow, this study also analyzes the characteristics of the lane-changing distributions within the lanes of mainline. The purpose of this paper is to present the basic theory to be used in developing a lane-changing model at the merging and weaving sections on freeways.
