  • The degree of KAP study on oriental traditional medicine was examined with some korean from July 1st to August 30th in 1996. The result of the study for predicting health and ill patterns runs as fellows. 1) It is too weak to understand and adertise oriental traditional medicine doctors and the curable disease; moreover cured diseases rather preponderate. 2) Although most patients go to oriental traditional medical clinic for the purpose of medical herbs in package and acupuncture, they think the medical fee a high expensive. 3) The 77.9% of respondents recognize oriental traditional medical doctors as a profession and others think them only abundant workers; therefore it is rather low to think oriental traditional doctors a profession. 4) Most respondents ink that oriental traditional medicine should improved in the inside; such as the expensive fee, scientific reinforcement of theory, lack of univerality, improvement and enlargement of insurance, unkindness, shortage of publicity, dropped equipment, system of medical specialist, lack of integration with western medicine, exact diagnosis and confidence of remedy and low efficacy, etc. 5) The struggle against the government (1995-1996 about herbal prescription right by western pharmacy) has taken the change of affirmative recognition. 6) The degree that acknowleges of oriental traditional medicine through these basic contents is average 61.65 mark. To be brief, although the step of recognition and attitude of oriental me야cine is very affirmative aspect, actually considerable difficult factors is in the last chosen step.

  • The traditional concept of ginseng quality was investigated in relation to historical experiences. traditional quality measure and mordern analytical method. The traditional concept appears to be based on the original Korean thought of oneness in life and universe. The outside appearance such as shape and size in traditional quality measure includes the inside quality. Since certain shape and size define specific tissues. cells and biologically active substances in cells the traditional measure will he a map for analytical method to find active principles. Traditional method suggests that the balance among biologically active compounds seems to he more important than the large amount of one active compound and that the mode of active compounds in ginseng for the homeostasis of human body is the multicompound to multitarget system. Traditional method strongly suggests the importance of nitrogen compounds. especially soluble protein and heat stable protein for the balance of active principles since nitrogen compounds are more abundant in the central part (xylem-pith) that grows faster than the outer part (cortex-epidermis). The balance of physiologically active principles appeares to be meaningful in relation to the difference in traditional use of Panax species.

  • Chosun regime, when it replaced the predecessor of Koryo, had to create political ideological system for new integration of the people. The new system, based on Confucianism, replaced religious values of Buddhism with educational ones. In this educational-ideological system, educational objects were mostly limited in character education's. Its goal was 'restoration of good nature'. For the principal agent of educational process, teacher had the initiative. These traits of educational system can be understood as an 'nature-unfolding perspective' or 'formal discipline perspective'. Moreover, the idea of 'teacher shall be served like prince' seems to be ground of political authoritarianism. In this respects, political traits of traditional education system can be restraining elements for developing independent individuality and free citizenship among Korean people. However, traditional teacher was not only authoritarian trainer. As 'a follower of truth and good', he was equal to his disciples. Teacher learned by teaching them. Students could be colleagues of their teacher. And the main traits of traditional education, focusing character development and community consciousness, are still important, in particular, to modern Korean educational and societal environment wanting in humane and participating citizenship.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate a trend of human error types observed in a series of verification and validation experiments for an Advanced Control Room(ACR) equipped with Lager Display Panel(LDP), Work Station Flat Panel Display(WS FPD), list type Alarm System(AS), Soft Control(SC) and Computerized Procedure System(CPS). Background: Operator behaviors in a fully computerized control room are quite different from those in a traditional hard-wired control room. Operators in an ACR all together monitor plant status and variables through their own interface system such as LDP and WS FPD, are notified of abnormal plant status through their own list type AS, control the plant through their own SC, and follow the structured procedure through their own CPS whereas operators in a traditional control room only separately do their duty directed by their supervisor. Especially the secondary task such as manipulating the user interface of ACR can be an extra burden to all the operators including the supervisor. Method: The Reason's human error classification method was applied to operators' behavioral data collected from a series of verification and validation experiments where operators showed their plant operational behaviors under a couple of harsh scenarios using the ACR simulator. Results: As operators accustomed to the new ACR system, knowledge or rule based mistakes appearing frequently in the early series of experiments decreased drastically in the latest stage of the series. Slip and lapse types of errors were observed throughout the series of experiments. Conclusion: Education and training can be one of the most important factors for the operators accustomed to the traditional control room to be adapted to the new system and to run the ACR successfully. Application: The results of this study implied that knowledge or rule based mistakes can be reduced by training and education but that lapse type errors might be reduced only through innovative improvement in human-system interface design or teamwork culture design including a new leadership style suitable for ACR.

  • This paper presented the application of GAs as a means of finding optimal solutions over a parameter space in the controller design for a fuzzy control system. The performance can involve a weighted combination of various performance characteristics such as rise-time, settling-time, settling-time, overshoot. The results obtained here are compared with those for a traditional design obtained using the root-locus method. In contrast to traditional methods, the GA-based method does not require the usual mathematical processess or mathematical model of the system. In this paper, the Ga-based Fuzzy control system combining Fuzzy control theory with the GA, that is known to be very effective in the optimization problem, will be proposed The effectiveness of the proposed control system will be demonstrated by computer simulations using task tracking position system in stable and unstable linear systems. It is shown that the GA-based controller is better than the traditional controller used It stable and unstable linear systems.

  • This paper describes the design and trial development of a system that supports continuous hazard mapping by local residents in their daily life. We performed an interview survey to design our system in a model traditional town in Saga Prefecture, Japan. The results show that despite continued efforts, many practical problems remain and residents feel unsafe. Considering these results, we designed and developed a unique information and communication technology-based support system that contributes to community-based disaster prevention and reduction. The continuous resident participation and posting design are the core concept for our community-based approach. Our system continues to support making a hazard map by integrating the community-based hazard information. Local residents register information (disaster types, risk level, photographs, comments, positional information) about locations that could be dangerous in a disaster. In addition, our system enables information sharing through a Web server. We expect that this information sharing will allow local hazard information for each district to be used.

  • Objectives: This investigation was conducted to evaluate current education status of pharmacopuncture in Korean traditional medicine schools and suggest improvement in the structure of pharmacopuncture education. Methods: Among the eleven Korean traditional medicine schools in the country, six schools participated in the survey. 252 students in fifth and sixth year whom have finished pharmacopuncture studies completed were given questionnaire developed for the purpose and survey results were analyzed. Results : 1. For the question pertaining to the text used for the pharmacopuncture lecture, a significant difference was witnessed suggesting that few schools were not utilizing common textbooks. 2. For the item pertaining to the lecture progression, each school showed significant difference and student satisfaction rate differed vastly between schools. 3. Lecture hours and lecture materials were also significantly different between schools and overall satisfaction rate was low. 4. All of students participated in the survey had high expectation in the clinical applications of pharmacopuncture treatment. Conclusions: Above findings indicate that students at Korean traditional medicine schools throughout the nation have high expectation for pharmacopuncture, but lack of standardized education system and materials and qualified instructors calls for immediate modification in the education of pharmacopuncture studies.

  • Objective : Radiodermatitis is a common sequelae in 95% of patients receiving radiation therapy, which is important to be well managed as it can affect the patient's quality of life as well as the cancer treatment schedule. The aim of this study is to review and summarize the interventions available for the treatment of acute radiodermatitis, including traditional Korean medicine, and to propose treatment algorithms for clinicians. Methods : To collect studies about managements for radiodermatitis, domestic and foreign database were used such as Korean journal of traditional knowledge portal (KTKP), Korean studies information service system (KISS), national discovery or science leaders (NDSL), and oriental medicine advance searching integrated system (OASIS), Pubmed, Google scholar and Scopus. Results : Thirty-two studies were selected. There were nine studies on usual care and dressing, eleven studies on chemical agents, two studies on biological preparations, and ten studies on herbal medicines. Conclusion : Hygienic options and dressings have proved to be useful in the management of radiodermatitis. Chemical agents such as corticosteroid, statin, and topical antibiotic agent have proved to alleviate symptoms and severity, regenerate damaged skin, and prevent secondary infection. In biological preparations, EGF (epidermal growth factor) and GM-CSF (granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor) could be used to protect skin and prevent radiodermatitis. For herbal medicines, Calendula, catechin, β-sitosterol, and Jaungo (紫雲膏) may be effective for symptoms including pain, itching, and burning sensation induced by radiation therapy. Because of some research with conflicting results, further studies are needed to propose an algorithm for more optimal treatments.

  • This paper presents the digitally implementable methods to preserve and restore the traditional wooden buildings, which are the typical "Korean Cultural Contents," by using computer and multimedia technologies. We first define the meaning of the digital implementation of Korean traditional wooden buildings and important points to be considered. In addition, we present the steps and methods for implementation. Furthermore, we considered wooden materials, structures and Danchung (patterns of paintings on the wooden pieces) in implementing of Gongpo (wooden structure system) for both Geunjeongjeon of Gyeongbok Palace and Injungjeon of Changduk Palace by using the presented methods. We present the mechanical method to digitally implement wooden buildings by using numerical ratios of Gongpo. The other advantage of this paper over the other studies, which focus on implementation of exterior of wooden buildings, is presenting the methods how to show the complicated relations of inner parts in Korea wooden buildings. Thus, it can be practically used in preserving and restoring Korean traditional wooden buildings.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of the plan of fishing village house in the Shikoku district. The research was carried out by field survey and measurement of the traditional house and street system in Higashimachi area of Tomoura. The results of this study are as follows. The traditional house of Higashimachi area is to be taking the plan of Machiya form that is the residence form of a city without being related a fishing village. And the street system is as orderly comparatively as a city. This is not the thing as that is surprised when we think the fact that Higashimachi area has maintained close relation historically with Kyoto, Osaka, etc. However, as for the house of Higashimachi area, the scale is smaller in comparison with Machiya, there is a fundamental difference in terms of the house for the exclusive use of residence. Machiya is the dual constitution of business space and life space. To it the house of Higashimachi area is doing the unitary constitution. Mise is the original opening device (a kind of the front door fitting) of traditional house of Higashimachi area and has the functions that complement narrow space and of offer community space. Finally, the traditional house in this area is equipped with all the residence functions of necessary minimums, although the scale residence is small. It is said that this is the case of a 'small residence' in a Japanese residence.
