Economic Assesment for Track Ballast Structures based on Proper Maintenance Level (적정 유지관리수준에 기초한 궤도도상구조에 대한 경제성 검토)

  • In general, it is known that the concrete ballast track is possible to reduce a cost of maintenance activities cause of maintenance free by restrictive maintenance in application of track ballast structures. However, if deteriorations and fracture mechanism of a material are considered, proper maintenance activities and repairing are continually required. For the problems, we evaluated an economical efficiency of the gravel ballast and the concrete ballast on a proper level of maintenance activities. As the method based on history path is difficult to obtain sufficient reliabilities cause of an absence of real data for maintenance activities, we chose the delphi survey method by professional group, and we obtained the appropriate index and profiles for maintenance activities. As a result, we founded that effects for cost reduction can be expected by preventive maintenance management, and we proposed economical restrictions and life cycle cost for track ballast structures in a life cycle.

  • The objective of this paper is to evaluate the proposed design by the Value Engineering (VE) analysis for the gravel ballast and the concrete ballast track structures. However, reliabilities about the VE analysis results based on Life-Cycle Cost(LCC) has not been fully benefited from VE implementation due to disregard of basic principles and lack of systematic performance measurement systems. In this paper, the VE analysis using the Delphi survey of professional group is proposed to decide reasonable determinants for investment and alternative design in construction project of railway tracks. Moreover, the efficiency of VE analysis is invested by an application of the developed methodology to track structures.

  • Recently, concrete slab track is mostly used to satisfy requirements for safety of high-speed train operation and economical efficiency of maintenance. Due to structural characteristics of ballast track structures, roadbeds under the ballast experience a state of high stress. In case of slab track structures, however, its roadbeds place on a condition of low stress less than roadbeds of ballast track structures as increasing of the loading area. In this study, vertical earth pressure under slab track structures was investigated through real-scale loading tests and theoretical analysis to compare with each other.

Flow Characteristics of the Ballast Blower for the Prevention a Foreign Object Damage on the Rail Road (선로상 이물질 제거를 위한 자갈날림판 유동특성 연구)

  • The ballast or other objects may be located on the rail road by a lump of ice, repairing operation on the track, or the strong gust due to the high speed running of the train. When a train operated in this condition, it causes serious damages to the wheel, train, and structures near the track, or the secondary ballast flying. To remove these objects safely, a ballast blower is suggested which was attached under the train. Firstly, the numerical analyses are investigated to find out the basic flow characteristics of the ballast blower. Next, the performance of the ballast blower is verified by wind tunnel experiments. Through these studies, it is expected that the ballast blower can be applied practically.

  • Recently, deformation of operating railway structures has occurred due to adjacent excavation works such as new structures and utility tunnel expansion concentrated around downtown areas. However, most of them are focused on structural review, repair and reinforcement of structures. A review of the Track is insufficient. In particular, in the case of the gravel track on the earthwork subgrade, the subgrade and the ballast are not solidified. A slight level of deformation can cause ballast relaxation. Sleeper support conditions may lead to unstable conditions. Sufficient safety must be ensured. In addition, it is a track type with a high risk of train derailment due to unstable support conditions. In this study, the correlation between the deformation characteristics of gravel tracks and track support performance according to subgrade deformation is experimentally and analytically verified. In addition, an evaluation technique that can evaluate the condition of the gravel track and the track support stiffness is presented.

A Study on the Vibration Reduction Characteristics of the Elastic Rail Fastener/Ballast Mat (방진체결구/방진매트의 진동저감특성에 관한 연구)

  • Generally, countermeasures for the train-induced vibration are divided into the measures at the source, propagation path and receiving object. Among these measures the countermeasure at the source location is the most active and effective one in the field of railroad. In this study, the effectiveness of each anti-vibration measures at the track(source location) such as elastic rail fastener, ballast mat were evaluated through the comparison of acceleration level, insertion loss at the installed locations of each measures. As result of field measurement of vibration at the railroad track supporting structures and on the ground nearby the structures, elastic rail fastener showed vibration reduction effect of 4.5 ∼7.3㏈ on the concrete slab, 1.6∼3.7㏈ on the ground with the train operation speed of 80km/hr. In the case of ballast mat, the vibration reduction effect at the concrete slab and on the ground were 11.9∼13.3㏈ and 6.1∼7.6㏈, respectively.

  • Railroad track consists of relatively simple structures such as rail, sleeper, ballast. Roadbed shares vertical pressure by train load which passed through rail to ballast as base that supports the track. For evaluating stress and displacement of roadbed due to the railroad load is an important role on the track as a basic data for estimation of the durability and design of the roadbed thickness. GEOTRACK program applied multi-layered theory was developed for analyzing railroad track structure. GEOTRACK program is a sort of numerical analysis program which has advantage that can analysis component of track by simple method. In this study, this program was used to preform the numerical analysis by changing track conditions and roadbed conditions such as tie, reinforced roadbed, dynamic wheel load, Resilient modulus and so on.   • Where the track is continuously welded over the bridge, the longitudinal forces will be distributed interactively between the track and the sub-structure by the rail-bridge interaction mechanism. The ratio between the longitudinal forces transmitted in each elements depends on the magnitude of the ballast resistance and the stiffness of the sub-structures. In this paper, the main factors affect on the longitudinal rail force are discussed and the parametric study for the behavior of CWR(Continuous Welded Rail) track was executed. It is concluded that the horizontal ballast resistance and the stiffness of the bridge sub-structure are the significant parameters affecting the stability of the continuous welded rail track.

Stress transfer mechanism of ballast bed using DEM (Discrete Element Method) (DEM을 이용한 자갈도상의 응력분포에 관한 연구)

  • Ballast is an important component of railway track structures. The granular ballast can be modelled using [mite or discrete element methods. The DE method has advantages to enable us to analyze the microstructure of granular materials and to exhibit information which cannot be assessed using FE methods. In this paper, sleeper, the ballast, and ballast mat in the high-speed railroad line are modelled using two-dimensional discrete circle and line elements. The stress transferred from the sleeper via the ballast to the subgrade is analyzed. In addition, the shape and angle of stress distribution of ballast bed is evaluated with different boundary conditions for the high-speed railroad line.

  • Several research institutes including KISTEC and KRRI etc., recently, have studied maintenance activities and performance, in order to determine proper maintenance level and maintenance cost of rail tracks. But it may extremely difficult to make a decision in maintenance matters of concrete track and ballast containing other sub-components. For these reasons, this study investigate variables related to current maintenance, essential maintenance, and preventive maintenance. It is intended to suggest estimation method of proper maintenance cost maximizing rail track performance. It is stated that proposed approach may be very useful to make a decision of proper maintenance level. Typical section of rail track is applied for calculation of life cycle cost according to each maintenance strategy. A proper profile for maintenance is determined minimum life cycle
