Cellular zinc deficiency inhibits the mineralized nodule formation and downregulates bone-specific gene expression in osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells

  • Purpose: Zinc (Zn) is an essential trace element for bone mineralization and osteoblast function. We examined the effects of Zn deficiency on osteoblast differentiation and mineralization in MC3T3-E1 cells. Methods: Osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured at concentration of 1 to $15{\mu}M$ $ZnCl_2$ (Zn- or Zn+) for 5, 15 and 25 days up to the calcification period. Extracellular matrix mineralization was detected by staining Ca and P deposits using Alizarin Red and von Kossa stain respectively, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was detected by ALP staining and colorimetric method. Results: Extracellular matrix mineralization was decreased in Zn deficiency over 5, 15, and 25 days. Similarly, staining of ALP activity as the sign of an osteoblast differentiation, was also decreased by Zn deficiency over the same period. Interestingly, the gene expression of bone-related markers (ALP, PTHR; parathyroid hormone receptor, OPN; osteopontin, OC; osteocalcin and COLI; collagen type I), and bone-specific transcription factor Runx2 were downregulated by Zn deficiency for 5 or 15 days, however, this was restored at 25 days. Conclusion: Our data suggests that Zn deficiency inhibits osteoblast differentiation by retarding bone marker gene expression and also inhibits bone mineralization by decreasing Ca/P deposition as well as ALP activity.

Resource Allocation Scheme for Millimeter Wave-Based WPANs Using Directional Antennas

  • In this paper, we consider a resource allocation scheme for millimeter wave-based wireless personal area networks using directional antennas. This scheme involves scheduling the reservation period of medium access control for IEEE 802.15.3c. Objective functions are considered to minimize the average delay and maximize throughput; and two scheduling algorithms-namely, MInMax concurrent transmission and MAxMin concurrent transmission-are proposed to provide a suboptimal solution to each objective function. These are based on an exclusive region and two decision rules that determine the length of reservation times and the transmission order of groups. Each group consists of flows that are concurrently transmittable via spatial reuse. The algorithms appropriately apply two decision rules according to their objectives. A real video trace is used for the numerical results, which show that the proposed algorithms satisfy their objectives. They outperform other schemes on a range of measures, showing the effect of using a directional antenna. The proposed scheme efficiently supports variable bit rate traffic during the reservation period, reducing resource waste.

  • 근래에는 디지털 포렌식 수사에서 다양한 스마트 기기들이 수사 대상에 속하고 있다. 스마트 기기 중에서 지속적인 전원의 공급과 데이터 통신을 하는 스마트 폰에서는 다양한 정보가 획득할 수 있다. 이 논문은 안드로이드 스마트 폰으로부터 획득 가능한 많은 정보 중에서 GPS 기능을 사용하는 내비게이션 어플리케이션을 사용할 때 기기에 남는 흔적에 대한 연구 결과이다. 해외에서 사용되는 어플리케이션과 국내에서 사용되는 어플리케이션 중에서 마켓에서 다운로드 수가 높은 어플리케이션을 선정하여 실험을 하고 분석을 하였으며, 분석 결과가 디지털 포렌식 수사에서 어떠한 의미를 가질 수 있는지 기술하고 있다.

1D Wavelet Filtering for Groundroll Suppression in Land Seismic-Reflection Data

  • Groundroll is a coherent noise showing dispersive behavior in land seismic-reflection records and its rejection has been a stubborn problem in data processing because they severely degrade the continuities and resolution of reflection signals. Conventional processing schemes of attenuating noises are the kind of frequency filtering (i.e., bandpass and f-k) that uses the Fourier transform (FT) along the entire trace in the time domain. To suppress them in this study, 1D wavelet filtering (WT) that can control time-varying frequency properties is tested and performed in the land-based synthetic and field seismic data. The results are compared to the ones from conventional filtering techniques in terms of continuities and resolution of reflection events. This filtering technique enhanced the reflection events by effectively eliminating the dispersive groundroll and random noises with control of time-scale function on wavelet domain.

범용 전문가시스템 쉘을 이용한 선박의 구조설계 지원 시스템 (A Design Support System for the Structural Design of Ships Based on an Expert System Development Shell)

  • Conventional computer programs developed and used by practicing engineers can be considered to contain expert knowledge and design experience. If these conventional programs are converted into expert systems, the difficult and time consuming process of knowledge acquisition can be simplified. Also the constructed knowledge-base can have higher confidence level than that constructed by the usual knowledge acquisition method of interviews. An existing computer program which is being used by ship structural designers has been reformulated as a design expert system by applying an expert system development shell-Nexpert. Utilizing the callable interface provided by the development shell, external design tools have also been integrated. The interfaced external functions are a graphical user interface (GUI) for the design process control, and graphics functions for the visualization of design results. It is observed that the developed system for design support is useful in two aspects. The trace-back function shows what portion of design rules are applied in arriving at certain design decisions. Also the knowledge-base can be conveniently updated as design rules of the classification societies are updated.

The Impedance Profile of Acupuncture Points

  • Background: Reduced impedance at acupuncture points (acupoints) is a well-known phenomenon; and the impedance has been found to reduce further in relation to organ stress. The author hypothesises that any changes to an organ's state or function are communicated to its related acupoints in real time. As part of a research project to demonstrate this communication, the impedance of several acupoints was studied in real time. Methods: The acupoints were located electrically, and a 40 kHz signal was used to sample the impedances. Samples were taken at each acupoint and also at a 6 mm radius. The sample rate was 1 kHz and the session lasted for 5 minutes. The results presented here were taken from a single patient. Results: The impedance at an acupoint's centre frequently changed in an inverse relationship to the impedance at a 6 mm radius (i.e. when one goes up, the other goes down) and the left and right instance of the same acupoint usually displayed different impedance features. Conclusion: When studying the fine detail of real-time impedance samples taken from the centre of an acupoint and also from a 6 mm radius, this previously unreported contrary-motion phenomenon provides a useful tool to differentiate between artefact and genuine organ-related features in an impedance trace.

광대역 이동통신을 위한 적응등화기의 설계 (Design of adaptive equalizer for wide-band mobile communications)

  • The main contribution of this paper can be summarized in two items as follws. Firstly, a modelling of mobile communication channel with Rayleigh fading characteristics is presented. Actual signal environments can be approximated as being real measurements by a proper mathematical representation of fluctuation of channel parameters due to Doppler effect, that is determined by the relative speed between transmitter and receiver, and noises, that vary at each sampling time. Secondly, an alternative procedure of synthesizing an adaptive equalizers is presented for recovering original signals that have been corrupted through the modelled channel. In order to compute the optimal tap coefficients for a high speed data(512 k symbol/sec) on a real-time basis, the CGM that guarantees fast and stable convergency is adopted during the training period of each frame. The coefficients obtained by the CGM are used as initial values for the LMS algorithm to trace the optimal coefficients during the data period that vary at each sampling time due to the mobility and noise at the receiver. Using the modelling presented in this paper, distributions of received signal power in various signal environments are demonstrated. The performance of the eqalizer proposed in this paper is shown as a function of BER under the various signal circumstances of mobile communications.

Motor Function Recovery in Stroke Patients with Corona Radiata Infarct: 4 Case Studies

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to use fMRI and clinical prognosis criteria to evaluate therapeutic interventions in stroke patients with corona radiata infarct and acquire fundamental information about recovery mechanisms. Methods: Four subjects (2 men, 2 women) who had strokes with corona radiata infarct were recruited. For all subjects, motor functions such as motricity index (MI), modified brunnstrom classification (MBC), functional ambulatory category (FAC), and bathel index (BI) were evaluated. Evaluations were done at least 4 times over a period of approximately 6~7 months from stroke onset. We compared the final evaluation with the first. Results: All patients with corona radiata infarct showed improvement in motor outcomes with the passing of time. The strength of all patients improved from zero or trace levels to normal or good levels in the MI (Motricity Index) test. Other motor outcomes including the modified brunnstrom classification (MBC), the functional ambulatory category (FAC), and the bathel index (BI) also improved with the passing of time. Conclusion: Stroke patients with corona radiata infarcts change for the better over time. Therefore, one can introduce clinical interventions by the aspect of progress in functional motor recovery.

AR 스펙트럼 추정법을 이용한 원자로 중성자 잡음 신호 해석 (Reactor Neutron Noise Analysis using AR Spectral Estimation)

  • 원자로의 구조적 건전성을 확보하고 사고를 미연에 방지하기 위해서 중성자 잡음 신호를 이용한 진동 감시에는 주기성 도표(periodogram), 평균주기성도표(averaged periodobram), Blackman-Tukey 스펙트럼 추정 등을 이용하고 있으나 본 논문에서는 통계적인 비편향성(unbaised), 일치성(consistency), 효율성(efficiency), 충족성(minimum lower bound)을 고려한 파라미터 모델링 방법 중 AR 모델을 이용하여 원자로 구조물의 최적의 파라미터를 추정하고 진동 감시에 필요한 스펙트럼 분석의 해상도를 높였다. 특히 논문에서는 차수 선정에서 AR 모델의 적절한 차수선정(order selection)을 위하여 자기상관의 lag value을 이용하였다. AR 방법중 Burg 방법이 원자로 구조물의 고유진동수를 추적하는데 가장 효과적이다.

  • 본 논문은 멀티미디어 서버의 부하 편중현상을 해결하기 위한 스위치를 제시하고 그 스위치에서의 트래픽 특성 분석을 위한 간단한 확률적 모델을 제안한다. 스위치는 경로설정 방안으로 우회방안을 이용하므로 스위치 내의 트래픽 부하는 우회확률에 커다란 영향을 미친다 본 논문에서는 제안한 모델에 의거하여 스위치의 트래픽 부하에 따르는 우회확률을 추적하였다. 그리고 그 결과를 실험적 결과와 비교함으로써 확률적 모델의 타당성을 검증하였다. 확률적 모델에 의하여 스위치 안으로 유입되는 패킷의 양에 따라 발생하는 우회와 그에 따르는 스위치의 트래픽 포화지점을 예측할 수 있다.
