  • The 1/5 scale-down model of the Bycatch Reduction Device (BRD) from an Argentinean demersal trawl was tested in a circulating water channel. The BRD is designed to help small Hake (merluza, merluccius hubbsi) to escape from a trawl. It is settled in front of a trawl codend, and is equipped with selection grids that help small fish to escape from the gear and guiding panels that help fish to meet with the grids. Bars of the grids are wires covered by the PVC and other parts of the BRD are made of net. When the velocity was less than 0.65 m/sec (2.81 Kont when translated to real towing speed) which is slow speed compared with real towing speed, position between an upper guiding panel and an upper selection grid were good to help small fish to escape. When the velocity was more than 0.8 m/sec (3.41 Knot when translated to real towing speed) which is similar to and faster than real towing speed, it was considered that small fish may have difficulties in escaping because the gap was not enough between an upper guiding panel and an upper selection grid. The lower selection grid was sat on the bottom of the tank without an angle due to the weight that it carries. Improvements were proposed to position the panels and the grids better.

  • The study was to review methods by which a ship can unfold and tow an oil boom by attaching the opening apparatus to an oil boom through experiments. The shape and dimension of the opening apparatus were designed with the measurement value of the towing tension load of the oil boom and the dimension of winch drum of the oil boom installed in the ship considered. For the field experiment to identify the performance of the opening apparatus, opening apparatuses were prepared to have the dimension of $3.0m^2$ and $6.0m^2$ which is 91% and 75% of the calculation value for type B and C respectively. As a result, T(kg), the value of tension in type B oil boom according to the towing speed(v) change when two ships are towed together were proved to be $T=920v^{1.1}\;and\;T=500v^{0.9}$ in case the distance is 100 m and 50 m. Based on the result, the dimension of the opening apparatus for type B and C oil boom was calculated as $3.3m^2$ and $8.0m^2$ respectively. When unfolding and towing by attaching the opening apparatus and 200 m of towing line at both ends of type B and type C oil boom, the maximum width of the opening apparatus was shown as 114 m and 95 m in average(width of opening/total length of oil boom: 33% and 57%) in the towing speed of 1.5 kt. It was evaluated that the opening apparatus could concentrate the spilled oil in a good performance. However as far as the increase rate of oil boom opening width according to the length of the towing line is debatable, the increase rate is remarkably reduced when it is lengthened from 100 m to 150 m and to 200 m although it showed extreme increase of 31% and 40% when the length of the towing line was changed from 50 m to 100 m. Therefore, it is inferred that the towing line should be maintained more or less 100 m to get good spread efficiency of the opening apparatus. Additionally, if the towing speed is faster than 1.5 kt, the opening width was narrowed because of the reduced spread efficiency and the shape of the oil boom can be unstable because of the partial sinking of the oil boom, run over waves, or flap of skirt. Thus the reasonable towing speed can be within 1.5 kt for the operation of the opening apparatus.

  • To investigate a proper sampling method for anchovy eggs and larvae in coastal waters of the South Sea, replicated samplings were made by different towing methods with different sampling gears and compared in terms of abundance and length composition. There was no significant difference in abundance in samples from vertical and oblique tows with a ring net. The abundance by replicated vertical tows with a ring net was not significantly different, but significant difference in abundance among sampling stations were found. The ring net sampled anchovy eggs in significantly greater numbers than collected by a NORPAC net, but both gears were not effective in obtaining quantitative samples of anchovy larvae larger than 3 mm. Therefore, samples by vertical tows with a ring net during the day at various stations is more efficient at estimating the density of anchovy eggs in an area compared to replicated sampling at a single station.

  • To confirm whether the square tank at Changwon National University (CWNU) can be used for estimation of maneuverability, planar motion mechanism (PMM) test and circular motion (CM) test were performed for various conditions. PMM test can be implemented using an XY carriage and a yaw table in the square tank. However, sometimes test section is insufficient for PMM test owing to low length-breadth ratio of the tank. In addition, the speed of a towing carriage is also quite limited. Therefore, it would be useful if PMM test could be effectively performed diagonally, by establishing coupled control logic to drive three servomotors. In addition, Froude number dependency on the estimated hydrodynamic coefficients was checked. Furthermore, CM tests, which cannot be completed in a conventional linear towing tank, were performed, and its results were compared with the results of PMM test. The results of the PMM tests in the diagonal direction were consistent with the results of the test performed in the direction parallel to the sidewall. However, the results of the CM test were greater than those of the PMM test. This tendency was also observed in the results published at Ulsan University.

  • The present study aims to assess test uncertainty assessment method of nominal wake field measurement by a Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (SPIV) system in a towing tank. The systematic uncertainty of the SPIV system was estimated from repeated uniform flow measurements. In the uniform flow measurement case, time interval between image frames and uniform flow speed were varied to examine the effects of particle displacement and flow around the SPIV system on the systematic standard uncertainty. The random standard uncertainty was assessed by repeating nominal wake field measurements and the estimated random standard uncertainty was compared with that of laser Doppler velocimetry. The test uncertainty assessment method was applied to nominal wake measurement tests of a very large crude oil carrier model ship. The nominal wake measurement results were compared with existing experimental database by other measurement methods, with its assessed uncertainty.

  • Two sets of numerical simulations were carried out for a planing hull model ship. In the first, the WAVIS 1.4 linear and nonlinear potential solver was utilized with the free support condition, in which the running posture was determined during calculation. The linear and nonlinear potential calculation results showed qualitative agreement in the trim and resistance coefficient with the MOERI towing tank test. However, the nonlinear potential calculation gave better results than the linear method. In the next simulation, Fluent 6.3.26 with a VOF model and the WAVIS 1.4 nonlinear potential solver were used with the given running posture from the measurement carried out in the MOERI towing tank. Fluent with the VOF method had substantially better agreement with model test results than the results from the WAVIS nonlinear potential calculation for the total resistance coefficient, and for the bow and stern wave patterns, in spite of the much greater computational costs. Both methods can be utilized in planing hull design when their limitations are perceived, and the running posture should be predicted correctly.

  • The towing distance, which is speed over the ground, and the water flow quantity, which is speed through the water, were used when estimating the amount of Metapenaeus joyneri resources that rose to the surface at night using the swept area method in order to compare and analyze the difference. It was conducted using a shrimp dredge, trial fishing gear for catching Metapenaeus joyneri. Catch during the entire survey period was 188.9 kg. Monthly catch ranged from 3.1 to 109.2 kg, highest in June and lowest in September. The swept volume calculated using the speed over the ground was about 13% higher than using the speed through the water. Metapenaeus joyneri resources estimated using the towing distance ranged from 320.1 to 14,649.8 kg. Resources estimated using the water flow quantity ranged from 278.5 to 12,886.3 kg. Therefore, the amount of Metapenaeus joyneri resources estimated using the speed over the ground was about 14% higher than the method using the speed through the water, indicating that the amount of resources was overestimated.

  • Hydrodynamic characteristics of a planing craft are very sensitive to the hull form variations, especially when the craft navigates with high-speed. Therefore, we need to verify hydrodynamic performances of the craft during the process of hull form design. In this paper, motion performances of a 40ft class cruise leisure boat are evaluated by both model tests and theoretical analyses using two different methods. Model tests are carried out at calm sea and regular wave conditions using high speed towing carriage installed in SNU towing tank. Theoretical methods used are a empirical method proposed by Martin (1976) and a potential method based on Rankine panel (DNV, 2010). The results from the theoretical methods are compared with and verified by those of model tests. Results of empirical formula showed somewhat larger motion RAOs and resonant frequencies than those of model tests. Potential based method showed even larger discrepancies with the model test results. From the analyses of comparison results, we could confirm the limitation of each theoretical method and suggest the way of improvement for the better prediction of motion performances.

  • When a disabled ship is being towed in a seaway, the resistance increase of the towed ship caused by both the external conditions such as wave and wind and the hull conditions such as drifting angle, should be accurately predicted. Most of the disabled ships cannot be towed in the front direction of hull, but they are usually towed in drifted direction with some drifting angle. In this sense, the resistance increase caused by the drifting angle is not an element to be ignored. In this paper, various methods for prediction of the resistance increase caused by the drifting angle are studied. In addition, new prediction methods such as front-lateral projected ratio method and empirical formula method by multiple regression analysis have been derived. The front-lateral projected area ratio method has been applied to a computer program for prediction of the towing condition, and this method has been approved to be a useful method in practical situations.

  • At the holding of live anchovies which will be used as bait for the skipjack fishing, it is necessary to transrer the holding creel to the holding ground from the long distanted fishing ground. Usually, the creel made with net webbing and shaped like pound, was towed with a tow rope fastened to the front fringe or it, when two serious problems were found. The one was that the leading flap or the webbing of creel was drifted backward by the drag and caused to decrease the volume of the creel and made anchovies mortal. The other was that much time were spent to tow creels for long distance with slow speed, whereas to tow fast made anchovies worn out and caused them mortal. To prevent these defect, the authors carried out a model experiment in a circular flowing tank with a 1/15 scale model creel by four different arrangement of towing, and found out two suitable method, then these two methods were experimented in the sea with full rigged creel, and found the most suitable method out. To decrease the interior current speed of the creel even if it was towed fast, the apron which made by the same webbing of the creel body was enclosed the leading flap of creel, when the interior current speed showed the 35 to 40 percent of towing speed, whereas it showed 50 to 55 percent without apron.
