  • Differential sensing methods are more effective in alleviating panel noise than single-line sensing, and thus have been increasingly used in the touch screen industry. However, they have a drawback: they tend to cancel out multiple touches and need touch position recovery algorithms. This paper introduces a novel algorithm of touch position recovery for differential sensing, which is a low-complexity but high-accuracy approach for determining multiple touch positions. We have implemented the proposed method in a touch screen controller system on a chip. In the simulation experiments using realistic touch screen models and a differential sensing circuit, the algorithm exhibited a high detection performance of a signal-to-noise ratio gain of up to 52.21 dB. Therefore, we can conclude that the proposed method is substantially more accurate than the previous method. Further, the proposed method incurs little or no overhead in terms of the detection speed and the chip size.

  • The purpose of this study were to compare light touch, two-point discrimination, position sense, and static balance ability and to examine the relationship of static balance ability and different senses in those who are wearing various heights of high-heeled shoes. Each 29 women was classified two different heights (below 3 cm, above 7 cm) by experience in wearing shoes. A t-test was used to determine the differences between low- and high-heeled shoe in light touch, two-point discrimination, position sense, and static balance ability. Pearson correlation was used to examine the relationship of static balance ability to these sensation. The results were as follows: 1) No significant differences in average light touch, position sense between two groups were found(p>0.05). But significant differences in average two-point discrimination, static balance ability were found(p<0.05). 2) Static balance ability was not significantly correlated with light touch, position sense, two-point discrimination(p>0.05). The results suggest that long time experience in wearing high-heeled shoe may be caused local sensory change and decreased static balance ability. Even though, static balance ability was not significantly affected but correlated with two-point discrimination, position sense, and light touch in order.

  • Skilled typists can type characters or words without looking at keyboard, relying on the finger's relative position. If the relative positions of the fingers can be identified, a virtual keyboard may be accomplished by applying the concept of "DataGlove" or "FingerRing". The virtual keyboard may be efficient as a new mobile input device supporting QWERTY keyboard layout. For the purpose of investigating skilled typing pattern, in this paper the touch-positions of the fingers are measured with a touchscreen while five skilled typists type a long sentence. From these measurements it can be observed that the groups of touch-positions are classified into alphabet characters. Though there are some overlapped groups we can find constant distances capable of being discriminated among the groups from investigation of the change of touch-position for touch-time. Based on the analysis, the prediction algorithm of the constant distance is proposed and evaluated, which is useful for realization of a portable virtual keyboard.le virtual keyboard.

  • This paper describes a contact position detection method of a capacitive touch screen panel. The proposed method is composed of a circuited compensating algorithm generating an output signal having phase difference to an input signal associated with contact position, converts both input and output signals into digital waveform (5V logic), and calculates the phase difference. Finally, position information with the phase difference is obtained by using a low-cost microprocessor, which is convenient to compensate non-linearity error. The proposed method, that computes phase difference directly, has advantages in feasibility and cost because it minimizes the use of analog devices; rather, it utilizes, cost effective digital circuit. Analytical results are also given.

  • In this paper, we present FloatingPad, a touch pad based device with better scrolling feature and more interaction styles than a traditional touch pad. When we interact with a real object like a picture or a book, we manipulate on the object, and we also move, rotate, and flip the object. We applied this idea into a touch pad. In FloatingPad, the touch pad is not fixed to the device. It is floating on the device; it can be slid on the device. Therefore a user can have additional degree of freedom of input by shifting and rotating the touch pad while having the traditional touch pad input. By using this technique, the interactivity of the touch pad can be augmented, and better scrolling feature can be provided by reducing clutching occurs on the position scrolling devices by using the movement of the touch pad as rate control. We implemented the prototype device and conducted a user study with three applications developed for FloatingPad.

  • Reverse engineering is reproducing products by directly extracting geometric information from physical objects such as clay model wooden mock-up etc. The fundamental work in the reverse engineering is to acquire the geometric data for modeling the objects. This research proposes a novel method for data acquisition aiming at unmanned fast and precise measurement. This is come true by the sensor fusion with CCD camera using structured light beam and touch trigger sensor. The vision system provides global information of the objects data. In this case the number of data and position allocation for touch sensor is critical in terms of the productivity since the number of vision data is very huge. So we applied wavelet transform to reduce the number of data and to allocate the position of the touch probe. The simulated and experimental results show this method is good enough for data reduction.

  • Objective: To investigate the effect of performing three different toe touch (TT) task condition on the activities of four different muscles using surface electromyography (sEMG) in healthy young adults. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: A total of 20 healthy young adults (6 males, 14 females) voluntarily participated in this study. All subject randomly performed three different TT task conditions as follows: general toe-touch (GTT) task, one side toe touch (TT) task during weight bearing, and one side foward toe touch (FTT) task during weight bearing. The muscle activities of erector spinae (ES), gluteus maximus (GM), hamstring (HAM), tibialis anterior (TA) muscles during the TT task were measured using sEMG. Subject performed each of the three conditions three time in random order and mean values were obtained. Results: With the trunk flexion period, the TT and FTT showed significantly greater muscle activity in the GM, HAM and TA compared to the GTT task (p<0.05). The TT position showed significantly greater HAM muscle activity than the GTT position. The dominant and nondominant ES muscle activity was significantly greater in the FTT compared to the GTT position (p<0.05). The dominant GM, HAM, and TA was significantly greater in the TT and FTT compared to the GTT position (p<0.05). Although the dominant ES was significantly greater in the TT and FTT compared to the GTT position (p<0.05), the dominant GM muscle activity was signifcantly greater in the TT compared with the GTT position (p<0.05). Conclusions: These findings may be applicable within the clinical field for selective trunk and lower extremity muscle activation and basic biomechanics purpose.

  • A large amount of processing time is required if the process of detecting the touch position on the touch screen and displaying it on the display panel is performed only by software. In this paper, we propose a method to output information touched on the screen using H/W method in order to improve the response speed delay. In the FPGA module designed for the HDMI signal output to the display module, the touch information is input to the serial data signal including touch coordinate information, point size, and color information. Then the module render the image using HDMI signal input to the module and the touch information. This method has a pipeline structure so it has effect of reducing the delay time that occurs in outputting the touch information compared with the conventional software processing method.
