Improving the performance of touch screen in mobile device (휴대기기에서 Touch screen 성능 개선 연구)

  • 이 논문은 멀티프로세싱으로 인해서 발생할 수 있는 touch screen polling I/O 성능 이슈를 다루고 있다. Touch screen이 장착된 휴대용기기가 점차 대중화되고 그 편한 사용성 만큼이나 쉽게 익숙해지고 있다. 하지만, 휴대용기기내에서 여러 가지 작업(multiprocessing or multitasking)을 동시에 처리하면서 생기는 문제들 중에 touch screen의 반응이 의도하지 않은 동작결과로 나타나는 경험을 하게 된다. 이 논문에서 이러한 부분에 집중하여 우선순위가 높은 다른 작업(process or task)과 동시에 touch screen 처리과정을 분석하여 개선책을 제안코자 한다. 또한 우리는 이러한 개선책을 증명하기 위해서 실제 구현을 통해서 확인한다. 개선된 방법은 이 상황과 비슷한 조건에서 활용이 가능할 것으로 판단한다.

Efficient Multi-Touch Detection Algorithm for Large Touch Screen Panels

  • Large mutual capacitance touch screen panels (TSP) are susceptible to display and ambient noise. This paper presents a multi-touch detection algorithm using an efficient noise compensation technique for large mutual capacitance TSPs. The sources of noise are presented and analyzed. The algorithm includes the steps to overcome each source of noise. The algorithm begins with a calibration technique to overcome the TSP mutual capacitance variation. The algorithm also overcomes the shadow effect of a hand close to TSP and mutual capacitance variation by dynamic threshold calculations. Time and space filters are also used to filter out ambient noise. The experimental results were used to determine the system parameters to achieve the best performance.

Touch Screen Sensing Circuit with Rotating Auto-Zeroing Offset Cancellation

  • In this paper, we present a rotating auto-zeroing offset cancellation technique, which can improve the performance of touch screen sensing circuits. Our target touch screen detection method employs multiple continuous sine waves to achieve a high speed for large touch screens. While conventional auto-zeroing schemes cannot handle such continuous signals properly, the proposed scheme does not suffer from switching noise and provides effective offset cancellation for continuous signals. Experimental results show that the proposed technique improves the signal-to-noise ratio by 14 dB compared to a conventional offset cancellation scheme. For the realistic simulation results, we used Cadence SPECTRE with an accurate TSP model and noise source. We also applied an asymmetric device size (10% MOS size mismatch) to the OP Amp design in order to measure the effectiveness of offset cancellation. We implemented the proposed circuit as part of a touch screen controller system-on-chip by using a Magnachip/SK Hynix 0.18-µm complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process.

Universal User Interface Design of ATM Touch Screen Based on the Reaction Time

  • Objective: This study is concerned with the user interface (UI) design of touch screen based on the reaction time of Automated Teller Machine (ATM) user. Background: Adopting the touch screen technology, the ATM service has recently established a new user interface different from the existing button-type interface. Method: Experiments were conducted by simulating ATM touch screen layouts, and layouts were focused on location of menu buttons (left and right, top and bottom), number of menu buttons (8 and 12 buttons). Results: The results show that there are significant differences in correction ratio and reaction time by user groups, types of menu location, and the number of buttons. Conclusion and Applications: The results of this study can be used to provide baseline information for the interface design of ATM touch screen and the age differences in reaction time.

Virtual Touch Screen System for Game Applications (게임 응용을 위한 가상 터치스크린 시스템)

  • We have developed a virtual touch screen system which has improved on the standard functions of general tooth screen systems, and it also can be used for game applications. It is based on an image processing system which does not require a physical screen like traditional touch-screen system. Our system requires only two standard PC cameras, so that there is no limit of the size of the touch screen. The developed system can be installed easily and implemented with low cost, and can be applied to new kinds of games.

  • In this paper, we propose a vision based system employing two cameras to provide effective touch screen function. The two main processes - determining touch (or no-touch) and contact location of screen plane - are essential for enabling touch screen function. First region of interest is found by using color characteristic and histogram for determining the contact mode. Second, if the hand touches the mirror, the fingertip point in image is found using the correlation coefficient based on the mirror attribute. Subsequently, the fingertip coordinate in image is transformed to the location in mirror plane by using four predefined points (termed as four-point method) and bilinear transform. Representative experimental results show that the proposed system is suited to touch screen.

Sensory Evaluation of Fabric Touch by Free Modulus Magnitude Estimation

  • Fabric touch was evaluated psychophysically in order to determine the relationship between mechanical properties and subjective sensation. For subjective touch sensation, eight aspects such as hardness, smoothness, coarseness, coolness, pliability, crispness, heaviness and thickness were evaluated using free modulus magnitude estimation (FEME) technique. KES-FB was used to measure the mechanical properties of fabrics. Woolen fabric with the highest values of WC and weight was evaluated as the coarsest, heaviest and thickest. While silk crepe do chine with the lowest LT, G, 2HG, thickness and weight was rated as smoother and more pliable than any other fabrics. And flax with the highest values of LT and SMD was evaluated as hard, cool and crisp. Fabric touch and satisfaction were predicted well from the mechanical properties, especially from SMD, by regression analysis. Satisfaction for touch increased as smoothness increased.

  • This paper describes new tactile feedback patterns and the effect of their input performance for a button GUI activated by a tap gesture on mobile touch devices. Based on an analysis of touch interaction and informal user tests, several tactile feedback patterns were designed. Using these patterns, three user experiments were performed to investigate appropriate tactile feedback patterns and their input performance during interaction with a touch button. The results showed that a tactile pattern responding to each touch and release gesture with a rapid response time and short falling time provides the feeling of physically clicking a button. The suggested tactile feedback pattern has a significantly positive effect on the number of typing errors and typing task completion time compared to the performance when no feedback is provided.

The Sense of Touch of Man-made Leather (인조피혁의 촉감평가)

  • The purpose of this study was to quantify the relationship between the sense of touch and mechanical properties of man-made leather. The first was to develop the five conversion equations which convert mechanical properties of man-made leather into five factor scores, which express five factors of the sense of touch(surface property, stretchiness, thickness & weight, thermal property(warmth & coolness), and moisture property(sticky & clingy)). The second was to develop the conversion equation which converts five factor scores into score of the sense of touch. Five factor scores were predicted by the following mechanical properties; surface property factor by log2HB and (log2HB)2, stretchiness factor by logEM, thickness & weight factor by logT, log2HB, logW, thermal property factor by logT, logHB, logSMd, and moisture property factor by logMMD, RC, RC2, (logEM)2, RT2. Subsequently, these five factor scores were converted into score of the sense of touch. The predictive abilities of the developed equations were satisfied.

RealBook: A Tangible Electronic Book Based on the Interface of TouchFace-V (RealBook: TouchFace-V 인터페이스 기반 실감형 전자책)

  • In this paper, we proposed a tangible RealBook based on the interface of TouchFace-V which is able to recognize multi-touch and hand gesture. The TouchFace-V is applied projection technology on a flat surface such as table, without constraint of space. The system's configuration is addressed installation, calibration, and portability issues that are most existing front-projected vision-based tabletop display. It can provide hand touch and gesture applying computer vision by adopting tracking technology without sensor and traditional input device. The RealBook deals with the combination of each advantage of analog sensibility on texts and multimedia effects of e-book. Also, it provides digitally created stories that would differ in experiences and environments with interacting users' choices on the interface of the book. We proposed e-book that is new concept of electronic book; named RealBook, different from existing and TouchFace-V interface, which can provide more direct viewing, natural and intuitive interactions with hand touch and gesture.
