The effects of Cordyceps militaris on the weight gain, the food intake, the food efficient ratio, and the lipid concentrations of serum, liver, pancreas, heart and aorta in male rats fed cholesterol diet were studied. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were received 4 types of diets for 4 weeks, respectively : a normal diet(without cholesterol), a control diet(hypercholesterolemic diet), a hypercholesterolemic diet supplemented with 3% fruiting body of Cordyceps militaris(CF), a hypercholesterolemic diet supplemented with 3% mycelium of Cordyceps militaris(CM). The body weight gain of rats fed the control diet were significantly increased compared to those of the rats fed diets with CF or CM. But, the hepatic and pancreatic weights of rats fed diets with CF or CM were heavier than those of rats fed the normal diet. In serum of rats fed the CM diet, the concentrations of total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol and the atherogenic index were significantly lower than those of rats fed the control diet. Also, serum HDL-cholesterol concentration and HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio were significantly lower in rats fed the control, CF or CM diets than those in rats fed the normal diet. Whereas, the hepatic concentrations of the total lipid, the total cholesterol and the triglyceride were significantly higher in rats fed 3 hypercholesterolemic diets than those in the rats fed normal diet. The heart and pancreatic concentrations of total cholesterol were the highest in the rats fed diet with the CR among rats fed experimental diets. In conclusion, the CM feeding decreased the concentrations of the cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL-cholesterol and the atherogenic index in the serum of the rats. But the CF or CM feeding could not decrease the hepatic concentrations of the total lipid, cholesterol, triglyceride in the rats fed hypercholesterolemic diets. The effects of alcohol. extract of acacia on total cholesterol, ${\beta}-lipoprotein$ content and S-GOT activity in serum of rabbit were examined. Rabbits were divided into four groups. A : Control group B : Cholesterol group C : Cholesterol+aca. alc. ex. (A) group D : Cholesterol+aca. alc. ex. (B) group Each group had four rabbits. A Group was fed with the stock diet only for the experimental period of 28 days. B Group was fed with the stock diet containing 500mg of cholesterol. C Group was fed with the stock diet containing 500mg of cholesterol and 300mg of acacia alcohol extract. D Group was fed with the stock diet containing 500mg of cholesterol and 500mg of acacia aocohol extract. Total cholesterol ${\beta}-lipoprotein$ content and S-GOT activity in serum was determined with spectrophotometer, spectronic 20. It was confirmed that the extract of acacia alcohol inhibits the increase of total cholesterol, ${\beta}-lipoprotein$ content and S-GOT activity in serum but the statistical probability was not significant.
Ojectives : Cheonggukjang(natto) is known to have anti-hyperlipidemic action. This study was designed to investigate whether Herbal-cheonggukjang (HC, Herbal-natto) is more effective than cheonggukjang only, Methods : We investigated anti-hyperlipidemic effects of HC in hyperlipidemic rats induced by high-fat diet in terms of observation on levels of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride in serum. HC was made by cheonggukjang added Codonopsis Lanceolata, Houttuynia cordata and Lentinus edodes in indicated concetrations. Results : In this experiment, hyperlipidemic rats showed elevated levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride, and also showed lowered level of HDL-cholesterol. Oral administration of HC decreased levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride, Cheonggukjang(natto) did not affect levels of total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglyceride. Conclusions : In these results, oral administration of HC decreased total cholesterol and triglyceride effectively. These results demonstrate that HC is useful to modulate cholesterol and triglyceride in serum.
This study was designed to investigate the hyperlipidemia-healing effect of aqueous extract from Mahwangimun-tang(麻黃二門湯) and it was performed on the hyperlipidemia of rats induced by high cholesterol diet and Triton WR-1339. We prepared two types of hyperlipidemia model in rats induced by high cholesterol diet and Triton WR-1339. The amount of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL -cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid, free fatty acid, the activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione were measured. The aqueous extract from Mahwangimun-tang showed significant decreasing effects on total cholesterol, LDL- cholesterol, triglyceride in the both model. And it showed significant increasing effects on HDL-cholesterol, the activity of SOD in both model. These results suggest that aqueous extract from Mahwangimun-tang has healing efficacy on hyperlipidemia induced by high cholesterol diet and Triton WR-1339.
Objective : This experimental study was designed to determine the anti-obestic effects of Bangpoongtongsungcankamibang(BTSK). Method : In vitro, BTSK extracts of various concentration (50,100, 200 $200{\mu}g/ml$)were added examination. The protein and mRNA expression of $C/EBP{\alpha}$ and $PPAR{\gamma}$ receptor was measured by western blot assay and RT-PCR. In vivo, BTSK extracts of various concentration (100, $200{\mu}g/ml$) were orally administered to induced hyperlipidemic rats by poloxamer-407 for consecutive four weeks and serum triglyceride, total cholesterol were measured. This method applied to induced hyperlipidemic rats by triton WR-1339, too. Obesity induced rats by the high fat-diet for six weeks were orally administered BTSK extracts of various concentration (100, $200{\mu}g/ml$) and serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol, hydroxy radical, superoxide dismuatse activity were measured. Results : I. In vitro 1. The 3T3-L1 cells' differentiation was significantly decreased by BTSK. 2. expression of $C/EBP{\alpha}$ and $PPAR{\gamma}$ was was significantly decreased by BTSK. II. In vitro 1. BTSK significantly reduced serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, contents in poloxamer-407 treated rat. 2. BTSK significantly reduced serum triglyceride, contents in Triton WR-1339 treated rat. But Total cholesterol did not show a significant change. 3. BTSK significantly reduced body weight gain of rat and adipose tissue mass of rats and serum triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, contents and significantly increased HDL-cholesterol, HTR(HDL-cholesterol/Total-cholesterol) in rats with obesity induced by the high fat-diet. 4. BTSK reduced blood lipid peroxide, hydroxy radical and increased superoxied dismuatse(SOD) activity.
The lipid composition of total serum lipids were investigated by latroscan TH-10 TLC analyzer in 69 healthy subjects and 62 patients with hypercholesterolemia. Total serum lipids level in healthy subjects was higher in females than males. There was a increase in total serum lipids level with increasing total serum cholesterol level in patients with hypercholesterolemia, regardless sex. Total serum lipids obtained from healthy subjects and patients with hypercholesterolemia were separated into phospholipids, free cholesterol, free fatty acids, triglycerides and cholesterol esters. Increasing the level of total serum cholesterol in the patients resulted in a decrease in the level of phospholipids, which was a major lipid fraction, indicating that HDL level in the patients was also decreased. However, cholesterol esters, triglycerides and free cholesterol levels in the patients were higher than those found in healthy subjects. The FC/CE ratio for male patients was lower than for healthy males, while in female patients, this ratio was similar to that observed in healthy females.
This study was divised to observe the effects of ginseng on the body components of Sprague-Dowley Albino male rats by alternating the diet. Just weaned rats (130 heads, weighing(83 ${\pm}$ 4g) were fed with each stock diets supplemented with 0.5, 1.0 or 3.0% ginseng powder for 4 weeks or 8 weeks, and after that fed with stock diet only for 8 or 4 weeks. Compared with the each corresponding group which was fed with ginseng control diet, the protein, total lipid, total cholesterol and free cholesterol contains in serum, liver and aorta of them were determined. The results obtained was summarized as follows ; Protein and total lipid contents of the rat were decreased, caused by the alternating diets, but total cholesterol and free cholesterol contents were increased in the serum, protein and free cholesterol contents increased, conversely total lipid contents decreased in the liver, and in aorta total lipid and total cholesterol contents decreased, In the view of the above results, it can be seen that the alternating diet (stock diet after feeding with ginseng diet) has an influence on the body components of rat.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlations among the anthropometry, serum lipid levels and nutrient intake in Korean female university students. The subjects were 119 female students at a university located in Incheon. This study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire. Anthropometric data were measured and blood lipid levels were analyzed. Nutrient intake collected from 3 day-recalls was analyzed by the Computer Aided Nutritional Analysis Program. The data were analyzed by SPSS 10.0 program. Average age, height and weight of the subjects were 20.9 years, 160.1cm and 54.3kg, respectively. Average serum TG (triglyceride), total cholesterol, HDL-C (high density lipoprotein-cholesterol) and LDL-C (low density lipoprotein-cholesterol) levels of the subjects were 69.47mg/dl, 146.85 mg/dl, 50.49mg/dl and 82.52mg/dl, respectively. Average AI (atherogenic index) of the subjects was 2.03, which was in the normal range based on risk values. Average intake of most nutrients except protein, vitamin B$_1$, vitamin C and phosphorus were lower than the Korean RDA. Especially calcium and iron intakes of the subjects were under 65% of the Korean RDA. Serum TG, total cholesterol and LDL-C levels were negatively correlated with DBP (diastolic blood pressure). HDL-C/LDL-C and HDL-C/total cholesterol were positively correlated with height. Age was positively correlated with phosphorus intake. DBP of the subjects was positively correlated with calcium and iron intakes. Serum TG level was positively correlated with total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C and AI, while negatively correlated with HDL-C/total cholesterol. Total cholesterol level was positively correlated with HDL-C, LDL-C and AI, while negatively correlated with HDL-C/LDL-C, HDL-C/total cholesterol. HDL-C level was positively correlated with LDL-C, HDL-C/LDL-C and HDL-C/total cholesterol, while negatively correlated with AI. LDL-C level was negatively correlated with HDL-C/LDL-C and HDL-C/total cholesterol, while positively correlated with AI HDL-C/LDL-C ratio was positively correlated with HDL-C/total cholesterol and AI. HDL-C/total cholesterol was negatively correlated with AI. Fat intake was positively correlated with total cholesterol, HDL-C level, and vitamin B$_2$ intake was positively correlated with TG, HDL-C/LDL-C. Therefore, nutrition education is necessary for female university students to promote the lipid profile and to optimize the nutritional status. (J Community Nutrition 4(3) : 151∼158, 2002)
Banggi, Banggi Whanggi Tang and Gami Jodeung San have been used to prevent and treat arteriosclerosis in oriental medicine. In order to investigate preventive and therapeutic effects of its crude drugs, this research was studied in cholesterol induced hypercholesterolemia rabbits. The rusults were as follows. 1) By concurrent administeration of Banggi or Banggi Whanggi Tang with cholesterol, serum total cholesterol contents were increased more slowly than control group. But in the case of Gami Jodeung San, serum total cholesterol contents were increased as well as control group. 2) By administration of Banggi Whanggi Tang or Gami Jodeung San on induced hydercholesterol rabbits, serum total cholesterol contents were decreased faster than control group. According to this result, it is suggested that Banggi and Banggi Whanggi Tang have preventive and therapeutic effects on hypercholesterolemia rabbits and that Gami Jodeun San has not preventive effect but therapeutic effect.
Dongchunghacho rice, produced by cultivating Dongchunghacho fungus on rice, could be an effective functional food because it offers added value to rice and thus increases rice consumption. However, the physiological effect of Dongchunghacho rice has not been reported yet although there is increasing consumers demand. Therefore, we investigated the effect of Dongchunghacho rice (unpolished rice cultivated with Cordyceps militaris) on lipid metabolism in hyperlipidemic rats. Forty of 8 wk-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups after a 1 week of adaptation period and fed either a normal diet (66% polished rice diet, NC), high fat (12 g/100 g)-high cholesterol (1 g/100 g) diet with 53% polished rice (HC), or high fat-high cholesterol diets supplemented with 30% of the total rice as either unpolished rice (DR) or Dongchunghacho rice (DR). After 4 weeks, rats fed the Dongchunghacho rice diet with high fat and cholesterol had dramatically lower plasma LDL cholesterol concentrations and atherogenic indexes and higher plasma HDL cholesterol levels compared with the rats consuming polished rice or unpolished rice with high fat and cholesterol diet. Dongchunghacho rice led to less total lipid and total cholesterol accumulation in liver. However, these significant reductions in plasma or hepatic lipid profiles were not closely correlated with fecal total lipid or total cholesterol excretion. The plasma concentration of total cholesterol and triglycerides were not affected by Dongchunghacho rice. This hypolipidemic effect of Dongchunghacho rice seemed to be unrelated to unpolished rice itself, because the plasma and hepatic lipid profiles of DR group were not different from that of the HC group. These results suggest that unpolished rice containing cultivated Cordyceps militaris can improve plasma and hepatic lipid profiles in rats fed with high fat-high cholesterol diet.
