This study was carried out to discover the response of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) senescence- associated genes (SAGs) to several plant hormones in detached and developing cotyledon. Accordingly, a collection of cucumber SAGs were examined to characterize their gene expression response through semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Cotyledons were excised at day 14 after seed sowing from plantlets, then incubated in 100 μM each of IAA or zeatin solution for up to 4 days in light and darkness. They were collected at 2-day intervals and used for total RNA extraction and subjected to RT-PCR. Gene expression levels of several cucumber SAGs were significantly changed during the incubation period. More than five cucumber SAGs involving SAG 60 responded to the IAA and zeatin treatment. In the ethylene response study, cotyledons were exposed up to 10 days by ethylene gas. Most of the cucumber SAGs did not show immediate response to ethylene in green cotyledon. The exceptions were PCK, SAG 158, and SAG 288 genes, which responded after 1 day of exposure to green cotyledon, while ICL and SAG 281 revealed strong responses after 10 days of being exposed to yellowing cotyledon. These results suggest that several cucumber SAGs react actively in response to starvation or senescence against exogenously applied stimulus. This induced senescence response is able to understand the SAGs role in lipids and amino acids metabolism partly and function in organ senescence during development.
This study was performed to observe the effect of hot-water extracts from garlic and 13 kinds of medicinal plants composites (GMP) on hyperlipidemia and hepatoprotective activity in rats administered with alcohol. Male Sprague-Dawly rats were fed an AIN-93 diet (Normal), a normal diet plus ethanol (control, 10 ml of 40% ethanoljkgjday), a control diet plus 0.5% garlic and 1.0% medicinal plants composites extracts (GMP-I), and a control diet plus 1.0% garlic and medicinal plants composites extracts (GMP-II) for 7 days. Blood glucose was higher than the control, but it was markedly decreased in the GMP-II group. Elevation total lipids, cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipids in serum were markedly decreased in rats fed with GMP-I. GMP-II also inhibited the increase of lipid content in serum. Activities of GOT, GPT, $\gamma$-GTP and ALP in serum elevated by alcohol were significantly inhibited in the GMP group. TBARS content of serum was significantly decreased in GMP groups administered with garlic and medicinal plant extracts. Extracts of garlic and medicinal plants play an important role in recovering liver function in rats from alcohol induced damage.

The effects of cooked soybean and a traditional fermented soy product, chongkukjang, on blood pressure and lipid metabolism were studied in spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). SHRs were divided into 3 groups (n=10, male), and fed casein, powders of cooked soybean, and chongkukjang as dietary protein sources for 6 weeks. Body weight gain was not different among experimental groups, but food efficiency was increased in groups fed cooked soybean and chongkukjang diets compared to control group. Consumption of cooked soybean and chongkukjang for 6 weeks in SHR significantly suppressed blood pressure rise with aging (p<0.05). Feeding of cooked soybean and chongkukjang to SHR decreased plasma triacylglycerols (p<0.05) by 21.6% and 30.2% and LDL-cholesterol by 30.0% and 27.5%, respectively. Addition of cooked soybean and chongkukjang to the diet resulted in reduction of total lipids and triacylglycerols of liver, while consumption of cooked soybean and chongkukjang resulted in the increase of fecal cholesterol and bile acid excretions, respectively (p<0.05). Cooked soybean and chongkukjang diets down-regulated the activity of hepatic HMG-CoA reductase by 56.4% and 94.5%, compared to control, respectively. From the above-mentioned results, it can be concluded that consumption of cooked soybean and chongkukjang might be helpful in preventing cardiovascular disease by suppressing blood pressure rise and hyperlipidemia.

An experiment was conducted to investigate whether dietary yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, SC) and its' structural components, i.e., yeast cell-extract (YE) and yeast cell-wall (CW) could influence growth performance, ileal morphology and serum lipids of male broiler chickens. There were four dietary treatments, each consisting of 6 replicates (10 birds per replicate). Chickens were fed a corn-soybean meal base control diet and diets containing SC ($0.5\%$), YE ($0.25\%$) and CW ($0.25\%$), respectively for 5-wk-experimental period. Dietary SC, YE and CW versus the control diet did not affect growth performance of male broiler chickens. Ileal morphology as to villus height, crypt depth and villus:crypt ratio of birds fed on the control diet was not significant from those fed on diets rich in SC, YE and CW, respectively. Dietary SC significantly lowered (P<0.05) serum total cholesterol by on average $19.7\%$ as compared to the control group. In addition, chickens fed on diets with either YE or CW lowered serum cholesterol by on average 15.3 and $12.5\%$, respectively as compared to the control albeit that the former only reached statistical significance. In conclusion, our study observed the hypocholesterolemic effect of SC in male broiler chickens. Moreover, YE, i.e., an extract of intracellular components of SC contains active molecules that are responsible far lowering serum cholesterol concentrations, but their identification at the molecular level needs to be assessed.
The more the population grow, the severer the shortage of a basic human needs such as clean water, food, energy resources and so on. Recently, we aware that deep sea water can be utilized to solve comprehensively food, energy and water problems. In this study, inhibitory effect of the deep sea water of east coast (DSW) on platelet aggregation were investigated using washed platelet and beneficial effect of the change of lipid concentration on serum at various time intervals for three weeks. In this study six groups of 6-month-old Sparague-Dawley rats were examined. An intact group served as controls (C-1D : breeding for one day, C-1W : breeding for one week, C-3W : breeding for three week). The fourth group (1D-DSW) supplemented with DSW for one day. The fifth group (1W-DSW)supplemented with DSW for a week. The sixth group (3W-DSW)supplemented with DSW for three weeks. The total cholesterol and triglyceride concentration on serum of supplemented groups with the DSW for one or three weeks were significantly decreased. The serum HDL-cholesterol level in the DSW groups were significantly higher than the level in the control group. The supplementation of DSW for one day did not appear to have such a beneficial effect on lipid level. The ability of platelet aggregation of supplemented groups with DSW was less than control group. These results suggest that supplementation with DSW is positively influence on lipid concentration and platelet aggregation.
Effects of leucocyanidins on the level of serum lipids and lipid peroxidation was investigated in 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxine(TCDD)-induced rat that were pretreated with leucocyanidins for 4 weeks. The rats were divided into five experimental groups that is leucocyanidins and low TCDD treated group(LTL, 0.1 ${\mu}\;g/kg$ TCDD), leucocyanidins treated high TCDD group(LTH, 10 ${\mu}\;g/kg$ TCDD), No leucocyanidins and low TCDD treated group(NTL, 0.1 ${\mu}\;g/kg$ TCDD) and no leucocyanidins and high TCDD treated group(NTL, 10 ${\mu}\;g/kg$ TCDD). Serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride level were significantly decreased and HDL-cholesterol level significantly increased in leucocyanidins treated group. Serum MDA level was also significantly reduced in leucocyanidins treated group. These results suggest that pre-supplement of leucocyanidins prevented the degree of lipid peroxidation on TCDD induced rat.
In order to investigate the effect of dietary long chain fatty acids on fatty acid biosynthesis of liver in birds, single comb White Leghron male chicks were fed a fat-free diet an diets containing margaric, stearic and linoleic acids and liver lipid components and liver and plasma fatty acid distributions were compared. Total lipids of tissues were extracted with a chloroform-methanol mixture. The lipid components were determined by thin layer chromatography and fatty acid distribution of lipid fractions were determined by gas liquid chromatography. Fatty acid feeding did not affect liver lipid components. When margaric acid(17 : 0), was fed, 17:0 and heptadecenoic acid(17:1) appeared in every lipid fractions of liver and plasma, and distribution values of these acids were not significantly different between the lipid fractions of liver. In blood plasma of the 17 : 0 fed chicks, however, significantly higher distribution values of 17 : 0 and 17.1 were observed in the triglyceride fraction and in the cholesterol ester fraction, respectively. Dietary stearic acid (18 : 0) did not show any effect on the distribution of 18 : 0 in every lipid fractions of liver but showed a significantly higher distribution value of 18 : 0 in the free fatty acid fraction of plasma. When linoleic acid (18 : 2) was fed, every lipid fractions of liver and plasma contained 18 : 2, especially a significantly higher distribution value was observed in the phospholipid fraction of liver. Dietary margaric and linoleic acids tended to decrease the distribution value of endogenously synthesized palmitoleic (16 : 1) and oleic (18 : 1) acids in liver.
The aim of this study was to observe whether the dietary supplementation of docosahexaenoic acid(DHA). In growing rats requires extra supplementation of arachidonic acid(AA) for brain development. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups, each fed a different diet. In the FO group, dams were fed a DHA-rich FO diet during pregnancy and lactation and pups were fed the same diet until 10 weeks old. In the AO group dams and pups were similarly fed a FO diet after weaning. DHA and AA were most effetively deposited in the developing brain during pregnancy and lactation in rats. However, FO-W pups showed significantly lower level of DHA at 0-3 weeks compared with the FO and AO groups and than slowly increased DHA levels to about 87% of other groups at 10 weeks with the introduction of the FO diet after weaning. The total amount of DNA in whole brain rapidly reached a maximum level at 3 weeks and then was sustained at a constant level after 5 weeks of age. The DNA content was positively correlated with DHA level but not with AA level in the developing brain. DNA content was significantly lower in the FO-W group compared to the FO and AO group at 3 weeks of age. However, the DNA content of brain in FO-W pups increased to 80% of the FO group level at 10 weeks after feeding the FO diet after weaning. The relative percentage of AA in brain lipids was significantly reduced in the early stage of brain development when only DHA was supplemented. However, DHA supplementation had no significant effect on the incorporation of AA when the approximately 35% of LA in the FO diet was substituted by preformed AA. These results suggest that large quantities of DHA could interfere with the normal conversion of LA to AA if LA is not supplemented enough together with DHA. Therefore, high DHA supplementation may require preformed AA in the diet even though AA has no significant correlation with the DNA content in brain. DHA supplementation after weaning also improved the incorporation of DHA into brain and content of DNA even though brain development was almost completed, suggesting that a low level of DHA supplementation without AA addition might be necessary to improve brain development during infancy as well as during pregnancy and lactation.

This study investigated the effects of an antifat diet with $\beta$-cyclodextrin on the reduction of body weight, obesity index, body mass index, body fat mass, body circumferences and plasma lipid levels in obese Korean women. After maintaining an antifat diet for 45 days, there were significant reductions in body weight by 4 kg, obesity index by 5%, body mass index by 1 kg/$m^2$ and body fat mass by 7% as absolute values (p<0.05). When expressed as percentages of the decrease, these reductions remained significant at 4%, 13%, 4% and 20%, respectively (p<0.05). In addition, after maintaining this antifat diet for 45 days, there were also significant reductions in arm, waist, hip and thigh circumferences by 3 cm as absolute values when compared to before intake of antifat diet, and these reductions remained significant at 8%, 3.4%, 3% and 5%, respectively (p<0.05) as percentages of the decrease. Furthermore, this antifat diet significantly reduced triacylglyceride by 103 mg/dL, total cholesterol by 50 mg/dL and LDL-C by 50 mg/dL respectively (p<0.05). Thus, the present results demonstrate that $\beta$-cyclodextrin may have benefit as a novel food resource for diets to prevent obesity and control overweight in adult women.

The aim of this review was to determine the status of acupuncture therapies in reducing obesity in obese patients and to determine the scheme and effectiveness of acupuncture therapies. Existing reports published between January 1, 2003 and December 31, 2017 in Kiss, Riss, National Assembly Library, Pubmed and CINAHL databases were searched electronically with the keywords obesity, acupuncture, auricular acupuncture, and electroacupuncture. After checking the original sources of the articles, 19 articles were included in the review. In a qualitative evaluation of the papers using a checklist from the Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network, one study scored 9 out of 10 points, 15 studies scored 7-8 out of 10 points, two studies scored 6 out of 10 points, and one study scored 3 out of 10 points. In the acupuncture therapy schemes, acupoints to reduce obesity included shemen, hunger, LI-11 (Quchi), LI-4 (Hegu), St-25 (Tianshu) and St-44 (Neiting). Acupuncture therapies were conducted for an average of 16.9 total sessions. In the studies that involved 20-day or 72-day duration for acupuncture therapies, the frequency of acupuncture therapies was 1 time/1-2 days. In the studies that involved 4- to 18-week duration for acupuncture therapies, the frequency of acupuncture therapies was 1-3 times/week. This study found acupuncture therapies were effective in reducing obesity, and acupuncture therapies reduced anthropometry, blood glucose and lipids and changed blood hormones. In the future, there is an urgent need for well-planned studies of the effectiveness of acupuncture therapies for reducing obesity in obese patients.
