Effect of Waste Transfer Stations on Collection Efficiency in Seoul (생활폐기물 적환장의 운영에 따른 수거효율성 분석)

  • 25 local districts in Seoul have been running Waste Transfer Stations(WTSs) to secure regional collection bases, to connect between collection systems and waste treatment systems, and to commit various pre-screening of mixed wastes. There were, however, few previous researches to define how much WTSs are beneficial to waste collection system at least in Korea. So this study analyzed costs of waste collection systems with varied haul distances from waste sources(WSs) to WTS or building types of WTSs. Major results showed that the closer WTS is to WS or the cheaper the construction cost of WTS is, the lower the cost of waste collection system is. There was an additional result that WTS system with more than 15 km of total haul distance might be useful in Seoul and encapsulation of WTS in building or underground will make effective total haul distances longer up to 35km.

An Earthwork Districting Model for Large Construction Projects (단지공사의 토공구획 계획 모델)

  • Earthwork in a large construction project such as a land development generally costs 20-30% of the total cost. The earthmoving process, comprising of four repetitive tasks: loading, hauling, unloading, returning, is quite simple and it does not need delicate or advanced techniques. Therefore, earthmoving earthwork planning can heavily affect the cost and time., and Even a slight deviation from the plan can increase or decrease the cost and time. This study presents a planning model that minimizes average haul distance in a large complex construction project. Based on earthwork planning, practitioners' heuristics, a districting algorithm and Simulated Annealing algorithm were employed to build the model. Districting algorithm plays a role that divides in dividing an earthmoving area into several sections. Simulated annealing provides a function that decides whether a new generated solution is confident. Finally, the proposed model was applied to a real earthmoving project of a large land development. It was found that the model showed approximately 14% improvement in average hauling distance compared to the actual design plan.

A Study on Vehicle Routing Problem Considering Homeward-route Transport Requirement (귀로수송소요를 고려한 차량 경로문제에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents optimal solutions for the following two problems ; (1) The vehicle routing problem with deadline considering homeward-route transport requirement, (2) The problem of (1) with relaxed constraint that the vehicle cannot visit the depot during the trip. That is, for the second problem, vehicle can visit the depot several times during the trip. The formulation and optimal solution we obtained outperform the existing ones proposed by other researchers in the sense of time and total distance traveled and the results can be applicable to short-haul local transport.

Transmission Distance Depending on Transmission Capacityin Inline Dispersion Managed WDM Systems (Inline 분산 제어가 적용된 WDM 시스템에서 전송 용량에 따른 전송 거리)

  • Effective transmission distance depending on transmission capacity of WDM systems with inline dispersion management (DM) and optical phase conjugator (OPC) at middle of total transmission length is investigated. The range of net residual dispersion (NRD) resulting 1 dB eye opening penalty (EOP) in 1 Tbps WDM system, in which NRD controlled by only postcompensation, is also investigated. It is confirmed that effective transmission distances are increasedto longer than several hundreds kilometers by applying optimal NRD depending on transmission capacity and distance. And it is confirmed that in 1 Tbps WDM system if NRD is determined to +17 ps/nm, the maximum transmission distance is achieved, and, especially, in long-haul 1 Tbps WDM system the effective NRD range will be determined within positive value.

Energy Saving in Cluster-Based Wireless Sensor Networks through Cooperative MIMO with Idle-Node Participation

  • In cluster-based wireless sensor networks, the energy could be saved when the nodes that have data to transmit participate in cooperative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). In this paper, by making the idle nodes that have no data to transmit participate in the cooperative MIMO, it is found that much more energy could be saved. The number of the idle nodes that participate in the cooperative MIMO is optimized to minimize the total energy consumption. It is also found that the optimal number of all the nodes participating in cooperative communication does not vary with the number of nodes that have data to transmit. The proposition is proved mathematically. The influence of long-haul distance and modulation constellation size on the total energy consumption is investigated. A cooperative MIMO scheme with help-node participation is proposed and the simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves significant energy saving.

Dispersion-managed Link with Unequally Residual Dispersion per Span with Respect to Non-midway Optical Phase Conjugator (Non-midway 광 위상 공액기를 중심으로 중계 구간 당 잉여 분산이 일치하지 않는 분산 제어 링크)

  • Optical dispersion-managed link combined with optical phase conjugation for compensating of the distorted optical signals due to chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects, which is required to implement long-haul wavelength division multiplexed system, is proposed and assessed in viewpoint of network topology flexibility. Optical phase conjugator capable to compensate for the distorted optical signal due to nonlinear effects is placed non-midway of total transmission distance. And, in dispersion-managed link, residual dispersion per span (RDPS) of each fiber spans in former half section and latter half section with respect to optical phase conjugator are different to each other. Simulation results show when the RDPS of each fiber sections in one half section makes it's own net residual dispersion slight different from another half section's net residual dispersion, the compensation effect in the proposed link configuration is more increased.
