Reactive oxygen species are known to mediate various pathological conditions associated with malaria. In this study, the antioxidant potential of Clerodendrum violaceum leaf extracts, an indigenous antimalarial remedy, was evaluated. Total phenol, flavonoid, selenium, vitamins C and E contents of Clerodendrum violaceum leaf extracts were determined. The free radical scavenging activities of the extracts against DPPH, superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide coupled with their reducing power were also evaluated in vitro. Moreover, responses of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione reductase (GR) in a rodent malaria model to a 4-day administration of Clerodendrum violaceum leaf extracts were also evaluated. The methanolic extract was found to contain the highest amounts of antioxidant compounds/element and also demonstrated the highest free radical scavenging activity in vitro. The results showed a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in SOD and CAT activities with a concurrent significant (p < 0.05) increase in GPx and GR activities in both erythrocytes and liver of untreated Plasmodium berghei NK65-infected animals compared to the uninfected animals. The extracts were able to significantly increase (p < 0.05) SOD and CAT activities and significantly reduce (p < 0.05) GPx and GR activities in both the liver and erythrocytes compared to those observed in the untreated infected animals. The results suggest the augmentation of the antioxidant system as one of the possible mechanisms by which Clerodendrum violaceum extract ameliorates secondary effects of malaria infection, alongside its antiplasmodial effect in subjects.

To evaluate the effect of defatted sesame flour(DSF) on the oxidative stress of ethanol feeding in rats, Wistar male rats were divided into 4 groups of control, ethanol, DSF and DSF ethanol. Each group was sacrificed after feeding for 4 weeks and was examined by measuring the formation of 2 thiobarbituric acid reactive substance(TBARS), total cholesterol(TC) in serum, redox glutathione S transferase(GST) enzyme activity and the contents of glutathione(GSH) in the liver. The formation of TBARS in the liver after ethanol feeding was significantly increased comparing to the control, but the levels were significantly decreased by the DSF as compared to the ethanol feeding group(p<0.05). When compared to fed control diet, we found that serum TC levels were significantly lower in the DSF fed group than control group (p<0.05). The activity of hepatic GST was significantly increased by DSF as compared to the control and was decreased by ethanol feeding. On the other hand, the hepatic contents of GSH were unaffected by DSF feeding. Our findings suggest that feeding DSF may inhibit ethanol induced oxidative stress may be due to the stimulation of antioxidative activity by sesaminol glucosides in DSF.
This study analyzed the contents of the research papers of Complementary Medicine concerning the inhalation drug for asthma published in Pubmed during lately 10 years. As a result, the following conclusion was drawn. 1. There were 5 papers concerning 2 review articles, 2 experimental studies and 1 clinical study. 2. Interventions of research papers are glutathione, microorganism fermentation extract (EM-X), ginkgolide and compound Chinese herbal monomer recipe (ligustrazin, baicalin, ginkgolide). 3. There is no controlled study for effect of inhaled glutathione, on the contrary it induced bronchial constriction in sulfites sensitive asthmatics. 4. Inhalation of EM-X reduced airway hyper-reactivity and level of IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13 in OVA challenged asthmatic mice. 5. Ginkgolide nebulized inhalation reduced symptomatic scorings and eosinophil cationic protein, improved FEV1 and PEF. 6. Compound Chinese herbal monomer (CHM) recipe reduced blood eosinophil count, eosinophil count and total cell cound in BALF, depressed airway hyper-responsiveness and airway inflammation.
This study aims to evaluate the therapeutic action of administration of Nigella sativa (NS) and Peganum harmala (PH) oils in diabetes and hepatic toxicity. Results show that treatment of diabetic rats with NS oil or PH oil ameliorate hyperglycaemia induced stress oxidative and hepatic dysfunction in diabetic rats. Administration of NS or PH oil to diabetic rats caused an anti-diabetic and antioxidant activities by the decrease in plasmatic glucose level and increase in hepatic superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activities, reduced glutathione (GSH) and glycogen contents compared to untreated diabetic rats. Besides, NS and PH oils protect the hepatic function observed by decrease of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TCh), and increase of high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-Ch) levels in serum and hepatic tissues. Moreover, a diminution in the bilirubin, transaminase glutanic pyruvic (TGP), and transaminase pyruvic oxaloacetic (TPO) contents in serum and the thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances levels (TBARs) in hepatic tissues are also detected.
This study was designed to investigate the effects of silkworm powder (SWP) on oxygen radicals and their scavenger enzymes in serum of rats. Sprague Dawley (SD) male rats (160${\pm}$10g) were fed experimental diets (SWP-200and SWP-400 groups)added 200 and 400mg/kg BW/day for 6 weeks. Triglyceride (TG)levels were significantly inhibited (10% and 25%) in SWP-200 and SWP-400 groups, but there were no singificant differences in total, LDL-and HDL-cholesterol levels in both SWP-200 and SWP-400 groups. Hydroxyl radical ($.$OH) formations resulted in a marked decreases (about 20%) in both SWP-200 and SWP-400 groups compared with control group. Superoxide radical (O2.-)and hydrogen peroxide formations resulted in a significant decreases in SWP-400 group compared with control group. Lipid peroxide (LPO)and oxidized protein(>C=O group) productions resulted in a significant decreases (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activiteies were remarkably increased (10∼25% and 40∼50%)in SWP-200 and SWP-400groups. Glutathione peroxidase(GSHPX) activities were significantly increased (about 10%) in SWP-400 groups compared with control group. These results suggest that anti-aging effect of silkworm powder (SWP) may play a pivotal role in attenuation a various chronic degenerative diseases age-related changes.
Effects of powdered siho(bupleuri radix) on serum and liver lipid composition and antioxidative capacity were investigated in rat fed high oxidized fat. Sixty male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 161.25$\pm$2.51g were blocked into four groups according to body weight and raised seven weeks with basal diet(normal group), basal diet and 10% oxidized fat(control group), basal diet, 10% oxidized fat and 2% powdered siho(2% powdered siho group) and basal diet, 10% oxidized fat and 3% powdered siho(3% powdered siho group). Feed intake, body weight gain and feed efficiency were not significantly different among oxidized fat diet groups. The values of total cholesterol and triglyceride in plasma and liver showed no significantly different(p>0.05) in the oxidized fat diet groups. Plasma HDL-cholesterol showed atendency to increase in powdered siho diet groups. The values of thiobarbituric acid in plasma and liver were lower in the powdered siho diet groups than control group. Plasma GOT and GPT activity showed a tendence to decrease in powdered siho groups. Liver glutathione peroxidase activity showed a tendence to increase in powdered siho diet groups. Thus, it seems that powdered siho had some antioxidative elements.

This study was done to investigate the carbohydrate metabolism related enzyme activities and antioxidative effects of Nelumbo nucifera(N.N) Root in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The contents of serum glucose, triglyceride (TG) and Total cholesterol were significantly decreaed in N.n treated group compared to the those of STZ-control group. The activity of glucose-6-pase(G-6-Pase) was significantly decreased in N.N treated group. Also the activity of glucokinase(Gk) was significantly increaed in N.N treated group. The content of hepatic glycogen was significantly increaed in N.N treated group, in addition, content of malondialdehyde(MDA) was significanly decreased in N.N treated group. Also, content of glutathione(GSH) was significanly increased in N.N treated froup. whereas, activity of catalase(CAT) was significantly decreaed in N.N treated group compared to the those of STZ-control group. activity of glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px) was inecreaed. In conclusion, these results indicated that ethanol extract of N.N would have carbohydrate metabolism antioxidative effects in STZ-induced diabetic rats.
The present study was designed to assess whether dietary inorganic and organic selenium (Se) could affect antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST), and the level of malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of lipid peroxidation, in the intestine, serum, liver, and gastrocnemius muscle of Korean native goats. A total of eighteen Korean native goats was allotted into three dietary groups, consisting of basal diet (CON), or basal diet with either 0.25 ppm inorganic (IOSEL) or 0.25 ppm organic Se (ORSEL), and fed the corresponding diets for 5 wks. Growth performance, including body weight and total gain, and blood biochemical profiles, including GSH-Px, were not significantly different between the three dietary groups. Also, the specific activities of SOD, GSH-Px, and GST, and the level of MDA in the intestinal mucosa and liver from goats were not substantially affected by either inorganic Se or organic Se. However, goats fed the diet containing organic Se showed a significant increase in GSH-Px and GST activities in the gastrocnemius muscle compared with those fed the basal diet. In conclusion, increased muscle GSH-Px and GST activities suggest that dietary organic Se may affect, at least in part, the antioxidant defense system in muscle of Korean native goats under the conditions of our feeding regimen.
Objectives : This study was to verify the effects of distilled cultivated wild ginseng herbal acupuncture(CWGHA) on diabetes by hematological analysis. Methods : Rats were fed with high fat diet for 8 weeks and the rats with hyperglycemia were selected for the experiment. Various treatments of distilled cultivated wild ginseng herbal acupuncture were administered intravenously and glucose, ${\beta}-lipoprotein,$ triglyceride, total-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Free Fatty acid(FFA), TBARS, superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities in the liver were analyzed. Experiment group 2 and 3 (treated with 0.5 ml, 1 ml, respectively), showed significant decrease in serum FFA, total cholesterol and TBARS levels compared to the control group, and showed significant increase in liver superoxide dismutase and catalase activities. 3. Serum HDL-cholesterol didn't show significant changes in both experiment and control groups. Conclusions : Above results indicate that distilled cultivated wild ginseng herbal acupuncture plays significant role as a hypoglycemic agent and in lipid metabolism. Increase in the number of administrations yielded more significant results.
This investigation was performed to study the antioxidant activities of Hovenia dulcis THUNBER var. koreana Nakai fruits extracts and the effect of Hovenia dulcis fruits extracts on glucose, lipid metabolism in diabetic rats. DPPH free radical scavanging activitiy and superoxide anion radical Scavenging of Hovenia dulcis fruits $80\%$ methanol extracts were $0.06\pm0.002mg$ polyphrnol/ml and $0.l2\pm0.00lmg$ polyphmol/ml, respectively. Hovenia dulcis fruits $80\%$ methanol extracts were partitioned into hexan, dichloro methane, ethyl acetate and butanol, successively. Ethyl acetate fraction were good antioxidant activity. Streptozotocin (45 mg/kg body weight, i.p.) induced diabetic rats showed a significant increases of plasma glucose, triglyceride and total cholesterol. Concomitantly significant decrease of plasma high density lipoprotein. Glutathione level were decrease in cytosol of liver. Lipid peroxide were increase in microsome of liver. Group 1 and 2 were treated with Hovenia dulcis fruits ethyl acetate extracts 50 mg/kg body weight and 20mg/kg body weight for 24 days, individually. Group land 2 rats showed decreased plasma glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol and lipide peroxide in microsome of liver tissue of rats, and increased plasma high density lipoprotein and glutathione in cytosol of liver tissue rats. The result suggest that Hovenia dulcis THUNBER var. koreana Nakai fruits extracts may effectively normalize the impaired antioxiants status in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Hovenia dulcis fruits ethyl acetate extracts were used to improve the imbalance between free radicals and antioxidant system due to the diabetes.
