The rate of convergence of the distribution of order statistics to the corresponding extreme-value distribution may be characterized by the uniform and total variation metrics. de Haan and Resnick [4] derived the convergence rate when the second order generalized regularly varying function has second order derivatives. In this paper, based on the properties of the generalized regular variation and the second order generalized variation and characterized by uniform and total variation metrics, the convergence rates of the distribution of the largest order statistic are obtained under weaker conditions.
This paper is concerned with the impulsive control problem $$ \dot{x}(t) = f(t, x) + g(t, x)\dot{u}(t), t \in [0, T], x(0) = \overline{x}, $$ where u is a possibly discontinuous control function of bounded variation, $f : R \times R^n \mapsto R^n$ is a bounded and Lipschitz continuous function, and $g : R \times R^n \mapsto R^n$ is continuously differentiable w.r.t. the variable x and satisfies $\mid$g(t,\cdot) - g(s,\cdot)$\mid$ \leq \phi(t) - \phi(s)$, for some increasing function $\phi$ and every s < t. We show that the map $u \mapsto x_u$ is Lipschitz continuous when u ranges in the set of step functions whose total variations are uniformly bounded, where $x_u$ is the solution of the impulsive control system corresponding to u. We also define the generalized solution of the impulsive control system corresponding to a measurable control functin of bounded variation.
In this paper we first investigate the existence of the generalized Fourier-Feynman transform of the functional F given by $$F(x)={\hat{\nu}}((e_1,x)^{\sim},{\ldots},(e_n,x)^{\sim})$$, where $(e,x)^{\sim}$ denotes the Paley-Wiener-Zygmund stochastic integral with $x$ in a very general function space $C_{a,b}[0,T]$ and $\hat{\nu}$ is the Fourier transform of complex measure ${\nu}$ on $B({\mathbb{R}}^n)$ with finite total variation. We then define two sequential transforms. Finally, we establish that the one is to identify the generalized Fourier-Feynman transform and the another transform acts like an inverse generalized Fourier-Feynman transform.
This paper is concerned with the impulsive Cauchy problem where the control function u is a possibly discontinuous vector-valued function with finite total variation. We assume that the vector fields f, $g_i$(i=1,…, m) are dependent on the time variable. The impulsive Cauchy problem is of the form x(t)=f(t,x) +$\SUMg_i(t,x)u_i(t)$, $t\in$[0,T], x(0)=$\in\; R^n$, where the vector fields f, $g_i$ : $\mathbb{R}\; \times\; \mathbb{R}\; \longrightarrow\; \mathbb(R)^n$ are measurable in t and Lipschitz continuous in x, If $g_i's$ satisfy a condition that $\SUM{\mid}g_i(t_2,x){\mid}{\leq}{\phi}$$\forallt_1\; <\; t-2,x\; {\epsilon}\;\mathbb{R}^n$ for some increasing function $\phi$, then the imput-output function can be continuously extended to measurable functions of bounded variation.
Starting from the quadratic optimal control algorithm, this study obtains the relation of the performance index for constrained systems and Gauss's principle. And minimizing a function of the variation in kinetic energy at constrained and unconstrained states with respect to the velocity variation, the dynamic equation is derived and it is shown that the result compares with the generalized inverse method proposed by Udwadia and Kalaba. It is investigated that the responses of a 10-story building are constrained by the installation of a two-bar structure as an application to utilize the derived equations. The structural responses are affected by various factors like the length of each bar, damping, stiffness of the bar structure, and the junction positions of two structures. Under an assumption that the bars have the same mass density, this study determines the junction positions to minimize the total dynamic responses of the structure.
In this paper we determine conditions which a function a(t) must satisfy to insure that the function a'(t) is an element of the separable Hilbert space L2a,b[0, T]. We then proceed to illustrate our results with several pertinent examples and counter-examples.
For the purpose of disease mapping, we consider the four small area estimation techniques to estimate the mortality rate of small areas; direct, Empirical estimation with total moment estimator and local moment estimator, Estimation based on hierarchial generalized linear model. The estimators are compared by empirical study based on lung cancer mortality data from 2000 Annual Reports on the Cause of Death Statistics in Gyeongsang-Do and Jeonla-Do published by Korean National Statistical Office. Also he stability and efficiency of these estimators are investigated in terms of mean square deviation as well as variation of estimates.
The objective of the study was to investigate the main factors that contribute the variation of $PM_{10}$ concentration of Seoul and to quantify their effects using generalized additive model (GAM). The analysis was performed with 3 year air pollution data (2004~2006) measured at 27 urban sites and 7 roadside sites in Seoul, a background site in Gangwha and a rural site in Pocheon. The diurnal variation of urban $PM_{10}$ concentrations of Seoul showed a typical bimodal pattern with the same peak times as that of roadside, and the maximum difference of $PM_{10}$ level between urban and roadside was about $14{\mu}g/m^{3}$ at 10 in the morning. The wind direction was found to be a major factor that affects $PM_{10}$ level in all investigated areas. The overall $PM_{10}$ level was reduced when air came from east, but background $PM_{10}$ level in Gangwha was rather higher than the urban $PM_{10}$ level in Seoul, indicating that the $PM_{10}$ level in Gangwha is considerably influenced by that in Seoul metropolitan area. When hourly variations of $PM_{10}$ were analyzed using GAM, wind direction and speed explained about 34% of the variance in the model where the variables were added as a 2-dimensional smoothing function. In addition, other variables, such as diurnal variation, difference of concentrations between roadside and urban area, precipitation, month, and the regression slope of a plot of carbon monooxide versus $PM_{10}$, were found to be major explanatory variables, explaining about 64% of total variance of hourly variations of $PM_{10}$ in Seoul.
An isoparametric six-node triangular element is utilized for geometrically nonlinear analysis of functionally graded (FG) shells. To overcome the shear and membrane locking, the element is improved by using strain interpolation functions. The Total Lagrangian formulation is employed to include the large displacements and rotations. Finding the nonlinear behavior of FG shells via laminated modeling is also the goal. A power function is employed to formulate the variation of elastic modulus through the thickness of shells. The results are presented in two ways, including the general FGM formulation and the laminated modeling. The equilibrium path is obtained by using the Generalized Displacement Control Method. Some popular benchmarks, including hyperbolical shell structures are solved to declare the correctness and accuracy of proposed formulations.
A transcritical flow occurs when the width and slope of a channel are varying abruptly. In this study, the transcritical flow in a two-dimensional open channel is analyzed by using the shallow-water equations. A weighted average flux scheme that has flux limiter with a total variation diminishing condition is introduced for a second-order accuracy in time and space, and non- spurious oscillations at discontinuous points. A HLLC method with three wane speeds is employed to calculate the Riemann problem. To overcome difficulties resulting from variation of channel sections in a two-dimensional analysis of transcritical flow, the numerical model is developed based on a generalized grid system.
