  • A model has been proposed that can predict the ultimate torsional strength of single-box multi-cell reinforced concrete box girder under combined loading of bending, shear and torsion. Compared with the single-cell box girder, this model takes the influence of inner webs on the distribution of shear flow into account. According to the softening truss theory and thin walled tube theory, a failure criterion is presented and a ultimate torsional strength calculating procedure is established for single-box multi-cell reinforced concrete box girder under combined actions, which considers the effect of tensile stress among the concrete cracks, Mohr stress compatibility and the softened constitutive law of concrete. In this paper the computer program is also compiled to speed up the calculation. The model has been validated by comparing the predicted and experimental members loaded under torsion combined with different ratios of bending and shear. The theoretical torsional strength was in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • This paper develops an optimized torsional design method of asymmetric wall structures considering deformation capacities of walls. Contrary to the current torsional provisions, a deformation based torsional design is based on the assumption that stiffness and strength are dependent. Current torsional provisions specify two design eccentricity of stiffness to calculate the design forces of members. But such a methodology leads to an excessive over-strength of some members and an optimal torsional behavior is not ensured. Deformation-based torsional design uses displacement and rotation angle as design parameters and calculates base shear for inelastic torsional response directly. Because optimal torsional behavior can be defined based on the deformation of members, deformation based torsional design procedure can be applied to the optimal and performance-based torsional design. To consider the effect of accidental eccentricity, an over-strength factor is defined. The over-strength factor is determined from performance level, torsional resistance and arrangement of walls.

  • This paper presents the experimental results of the wind tunnel tests for three symmetric, rectangular, tall building models on a typical open terrain considering the torsional motion-induced vibrations. The time histories of the wind pressure on these models under different reduced wind speeds and torsional amplitudes are obtained through the multiple point synchronous scanning pressure technique. Thereafter, the characteristics of both the Root Mean Square (RMS) coefficients and the spectra of the base shear/torque in the along-wind, across-wind, and torsional directions, respectively, are discussed. The results show that the RMS coefficients of the base shear/torque vary in the three directions with both the reduced wind speeds and the torsional vibration amplitudes. The variation of the RMS coefficients in the along-wind direction results mainly from the change of the aerodynamic forces, but sometimes from aeroelastic effects induced by torsional vibration. However, the variations of the RMS coefficients in the across-wind and torsional directions are caused by more equal weights of both the aerodynamic forces and the aeroelastic effects. As such, for the typical tall buildings, the modification of the aerodynamic forces in the along-wind, across-wind, and torsional directions, respectively, and the aeroelastic effects in the across-wind and torsional directions should be considered. It is identified that the torsional vibration amplitudes and the reduced wind speeds are two significant parameters for the aerodynamic forces on the structures in the three directions.

  • Determination of stress-strain relationship in torsional tests is complicated due to nonuniform stress-strain variation occurring linearly with the radius in a soil specimen in torsion. The equivalent radius approach is adequate when calculating strain at low to intermediate strains, however, the approach is less accurate when performing the test at higher strain levels. The modified equivalent radius approach was developed to account for the problem more precisely. This approach was extended to generate the plots of equivalent radius ratio versus strain using modified hyperbolic and Ramberg-Osgood models. Results showed the effects of soil nonlinearity on the equivalent radius ratio curves were observed. Curve fitting was also performed to find the stress-strain relationship by fitting the theoretical torque-rotation relationship to measured torque-rotation relationship.

  • This paper deals with the flexural-torsional free vibrations of circular strip foundations with a variable breadth. The breadth of strip foundation varies with the linear functional fashion, which is symmetric about the mid-arc. Differential equations governing free vibrations of such foundations are derived, in which Winkler foundation is considered as the model of elastic soils. Effects of the rotatory and torsional inertias and shear deformation are included in the governing equations. Differential equations are numerically solved to calculate the natural frequencies. In the numerical examples, the free-free end constraint is considered. Effects of the rotatory and torsional inertias and shear parameter on the natural frequencies are reported. Parametric studies between frequency parameters and various system parameters are investigated.

  • A general geometrically non-linear model for lateral-torsional buckling of thick and thin-walled FGM box beams is presented. In this model primary and secondary torsional warping and shear effects are taken into account. The coupled equilibrium equations obtained from Galerkin's method are derived and the corresponding tangent matrix is used to compute the critical moments. General expression is derived for the lateral-torsional buckling load of unshearable FGM beams. The results are validated by comparison with a 3D finite element simulation using the code ABAQUS. The influences of the geometrical characteristics and the shear effects on the buckling loads are demonstrated through several case studies.

  • The $I_c$ degradation behavior of YBCO CC tapes due to torsional deformation has been investigated. Particularly, the influence of torsion angle on the $I_c$ in HTS tapes was examined at 77K (self-field). At low torsional angles or shear strains, the $I_c$ degradation was small and gradual. Also, a good consistency of the $I_c$ degradation behaviors was found along the longitudinal direction under torsion when multiple voltage terminals were adopted for investigating the homogeneity of the $I_c$ degradation.
