This study was conducted as a restoration research in a mountain stream of hydrologic cycle system, which is a type of microsites purposely changing vegetation. The status of vegetation in the three experimental sites, water purification site, small dammed pole site, and aquatic plant restoration site, and one control site within the area of the mountain forest stream were investigated in three different periods, namely before sites restoration, year of sites restoration, and year after sites restoration. After one year of restoration, number of vegetation was increased in the small dammed pool and control site respectively. Vegetation coverage ratio of Zizania latifolia was increased at the water purification area. The effects of habitats restoration appeared to be good a year after the restoration of the experimental sites, in terms of families and species composition of the introduced vegetation, and stream flow. Therefore, the results of the study strongly suggest that fairly effective ways to restore and reproduce degrading mountain hydroecological habitats are by way of forming pool sites and small dams in intermittent mountain streams and re-vegetating with selected plants.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of erosion control works on the stream ecosystem in a mountain torrential stream. The species composition of benthic macroinvertebrates and biological water quality were investigated before and after construction of erosion control works at 5 sites. The total number of benthic macroinvertebrates before construction was 3,086 individuals including 4 phyla, 6 classes, 11 orders, 22 families, and 25 species, but after construction it has decreased to 1,208 individuals including 4 phyla, 6 classes, 10 orders, 17 families, and 19 species. Especially, the diversity, richness, and evenness indices, which were calculated based on existing number of biological species, have decreased or not produced at the erosion control sites, where biological species were not found or the minimum number of species were found. The results of community analysis of benthic macroinvertebrates and ESB(Ecological Score of Benthic macroinvertebrate community) indicated that the environmental qualities of the stream based on saprobity, environmental condition, and water quality decreased after the construction at all sites: before construction, the top of the stream was satisfactory and some satisfactory, the middle was some defectiveness, and the lower was defectiveness and very defectiveness; after construction, all parts of the stream except some parts of the top were very defectiveness. Moreover, the water quality of torrential stream was rated between I to III before construction, but after construction, it declined to $IV{\sim}V$ except control. The habitat damage of benthic macro invertebrates occurred at all investigation sites after the construction of erosion control works led to reduction of the number of biological species and water quality deterioration. The results reported in this study were collected directly after the construction of erosion control works. Therefore, additional studies are needed to further explore the effect of disaster-prevention of erosion control works and the recovery process of stream ecosystem through long term monitoring.
When overland flow water is small and slow, it moves down a stream slowly and we use it as available resource. However, it could not only be good for nothing but arouse an inundation if a lot of runoff pour down to stream at a torrential rain. So it is important to know how much water to flow out and be stored in soil and on land in order to predict a flood and conserve soil and water quality. We intended to develop the prediction model of runoff in upland at a torrential rain and conducted lysimeter study in soybean cultivation and bare soil with 3 slopeness, 3 slope length and 5 soil texture from 1985 to 1991. The data of rainfall and runoff were used when daily rainfall was over 80 mm, the level of torrential rain warning. Minimum rainfall occurring runoff (MROR) was dependent on surface coverage and slope length. However soil texture and slopeness had a little influence on MROR. Runoff after MROR increased in proportion to precipitation which depended on surface coverage, soil texture and slope. Runoff ratio was larger in fine texture and bare soil than coarse soil and soybean coverage. Runoff ratio was in proportion to a square root of slope angle(radian) and reduced with slope length to converge a certain value. From these basis, we developed the prediction model following as $$Runoff(mm)=a(s^{0.5}+l^b)(Rainfall(mm)-80(1-e^{-bl}))$$ where a is a coefficient relevant soil hydraulic properties, b is a surface coverage coefficient, s is a slope angle and l is a slope length. The coefficient a was 0.5 in sandy loam and 0.6 in clay, and b was 0.06 in bare soil and 0.5 in soybean cultivation.
Such stream characteristics as the numbers, lengths, orders of stream channels, and drainage density are the essential elements for the analysis of drainages in planning of watershed management in a drainage basin. The drainage net is the pattern of tributaries and master streams in a drainage basin as declineated on a planimetric map. Stream order is a measure of the position of a stream in the hierarchy of tributaries. Density of the drainage is given by the quotient of the cumulative length of stream and the total drainage area. Drainage density then is simply a length per unit of area. In this study, the Anyang-cheon upper-watershed is selected for the survey and analysis of the stream system and drainage density in view point of the useful collection of data for effective watershed management planning. The Anyang-cheon upper-watershed is consisted of about 12,600 hectars of drainage area including the 13 Sub-stream. Total length of the Stream (as described in the Stream Law) in the survey area is measured as much as 71.2km, and that of the Small-stream as descrived in the Saemaul Stream Survey Book (1972) is calculated as 43,010 meters. Besides of this lengths, measured about 43,410 meters of the Small-stream and about 71,900 meters of the Torrential valley through this study. The range of the drainage density among the 13 Sub-streams having sub-watershed is analysed as from 14.79 to 24.10, and average value of drainage density in the entire watershed is calculated as 18.21 in case of including the length of the Torrential valley and 12.50 in case of excluding the same. It is required that the standard classification system in classifing for the characteristics of identification among the Stream, Sub-stream, Small-stream, Torrent, and Torrential valley must be satisfied through joint study of the authorities concerned.
Damages caused by torrential rain occur every year in Korea and summer time convection can cause strong thunderstorms to develop which bring dangerous weather such as torrential rain, gusts, and flash flooding. On 6 August 2013 a sudden torrential rain concentrated over the inland of Southern Korean Peninsula occurred. This was an event characterized as a mesoscale multicellular convection. The purpose of this study is to analyze the conditions of the multicellular convection and the synoptic and mesoscale nature of the system development. To this end, dynamical and thermodynamic analyses of surface and upper-level weather charts, satellite images, soundings, reanalysis data and WRF model simulations are performed. At the beginning stage there was a cool, dry air intrusion in the upper-level of the Korean Peninsula, and a warm humid air flow from the southwest in the lower-level creating atmospheric instability. This produced a single cell cumulonimbus cloud in the vicinity of Baengnyeongdo, and due to baroclinic instability, shear and cyclonic vorticity the cloud further developed into a multicellular convection. The cloud system moved southeast towards Seoul metropolitan area accompanied by lightning, heavy precipitation and strong wind gusts. In addition, atmospheric instability due to daytime insolation caused new convective cells to develop in the upstream part of the Sobaek Mountain which merged with existing multicellular convection creating a larger system. This case was unusual because the system was affected little by the upper-level jet stream which is typical in Korea. The development and propagation of the multicellular convection showed strong mesoscale characteristics and was not governed by large synoptic-scale dynamics. In particular, the system moved southeast crossing the Peninsula diagonally from northwest to southeast and did not follow the upper-level westerly pattern. The analysis result shows that the movement of the system can be determined by the vertical wind shear.

Concentrated localized torrential rains due to global warming and climate change have resulted in much water damage each year. GIS is used as a tool for predicting the peak-outflows caused by these regional torrential rains in mountainous rivers. However, the research of the resolution of the data is limited, and most of approaches are about hydrological geographic. This paper estimates the flood discharge needed for decision of standard rainfall of automatic rainfall warning system by using GIS with GcIUH model, and establishes the criteria of flash flood warning. It also has analyzed the terrain in river basin, extracted the morphological characteristics parameters of water shed such as stream width, channel slope, channel length, shape factor, and GcIUH parameters, and analyzed the relationship between them.

In order to analysis of the water pollution of the Anyang stream(one of the biggest branch streams of the Han River) and its main tributaries, the geological and topographical and rainfall features in its basin were investigated. To do this, the water samples were collected 23 points of the upper, mid and down of Anyang stream and its tributaries and were analyzed based on the chemical methods, Korean Biotic Index(KBI) and Saprobien systems. The Anyang stream basin has a characteristic of topographical torrential heavy rainfall like a typical rainfall feature in Korea. The concentration and the outflow rate of rainfall is very different in seasonal, and water pollution in dry season is especially severe. After 1997, although the water quality status of stream has been improved gradually, the concentration of T-N and SS at the upstream is increased due to the deficiency of facility used for collecting wastewater released from industrial factories, livestock farms and residential areas. The mainstream of the Anyang stream is classified into the 5th grade water as polysaprobic water area according to Saprobien system and the biotic index is over 2.5 in overall. Most of tributaries have 1~3 grade water limit with ${\alpha}$- and ${\beta}$-mesosaprobic except the upper and mid streams of Samsung tributary, in which pollution status is the lowest part. Though Sambong tributary is ${\alpha}$-mesosaproboic, biotic index is low because of the appearance of abundant benthos animals in farming and fishing villages.
This study examined the effect of forest road construction on electronic conductivity(EC) and ion concentrations under different precipitation. They were torrential streams within three different watersheds with various forest road densities (watershed A : 8.82m/ha, watershed B: 2.32m/ha, and watershed C: control) in the Experimental Forest of Kangwon National University. The results were as follows: 1. EC of three watersheds did not show on difference in precipitation, but it was high in case of long interval rainfall time period. EC of watershed A and B were higher than that of watershed C. 2. Concentrations of cation was about 2 times higher than those of anion. Average concentrations of $N^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ showed maximum and minimum respectively, and $SO_4{^{2-}}$ was 3.7 times higher than $Cl^-$. 3. Precipitation and discharge had no effect on ion concentrations, but watershed A and B were higher in concentrations of cation than watershed C.

Hancheon reservoir, which is located upstream of Jeju city, has been built for flood mitigation after Typhoon Nari, 2007. To verify flood mitigating effect of the this reservoir on the downstream area, runoff analysis based on the measured data (two stream discharge monitoring stations and inflow data to the reservoir) is carried out during torrential rain followed by typhoon Dainmu, 2010. The stream water level was recorded as 3.14 m for the peak at the down gradient station. The stream water level under the assumption of absence of Hancheon reservoir is calculated as 4.16 m using the estimated rating curve, stream water propagation velocity, and the bypassed volume of water to the reservoir. This result shows that clear effect of reservoir operation which is capable of mitigating peak discharge in the downstream area.

Natural stream disasters due to a localized torrential and flash flood has occurring in a small stream especially un-implemented small stream. The survey results during ten years from 2001 to 2010 show that the small stream implementation projects (SSIPs) expenses is increasing with the damages is generally decreasing with variableness in which SSIPs is contributing to disaster prevention in a small stream. This study develop guideline for the selection of SSIPs to support high risk stream at first and save the small streams located on the mountainous area, prevention area and agricultural area which streams have no implementation effects. Developed sub items in guideline are evaluated by stream data collected from 212 small streams where it is proved that sub distance of each item are well arranged by normal distribution. This SSIPs is useful for selecting high risk small stream at first to maximize disaster risk reduction with minimum SSIPs expenses. Also, this SSIPs is used for leading to save small stream on the upstream to minimize flood damages on the down stream with selection a SSIP purchasing agricultural land for preparing flood plane.
