Effect of Organic Fertilizers Application on Radish and Cabbage Growth (무우, 배추생육(生育)에 대한 수종의 유기질비료(有機質肥料) 시용효과)

  • 1. Application of N.P.K compound fertilizer increased N.P.K contents in soils and application of peat and Miwon organic fertilizer showed the trend of increasing N contents in soils also. 2. N, Ca and Mg contents in radish leaves(top) were higher than in radish(bottom) but P content was revered. And application of N.P.K compound fertilizer always incresased N content in radish plants regardless of any other fertilzer addition. 3. Application of N.P.K compound fertilizer increased N.P.K contents in cabbage plants more compare to no application of N.P.K compound fertilizer regardless of other fertilizer application. 4. Plant growth status and yield (fresh weight) of radish and cabbage revealed that every fertilizer application increased plant growth and yield compared to no fertilizer application, but N.P.K compound fertilizer showed higher increment compared to organic matter fertilizer application except Miwon(2 level)treatment. However, organic fertilizer application together with N.P.K compound fertilizer level recommended showed the highest in radish and cabbage yield. 5. Effects of four organic fertilizer on yields(fresh weight) of radish and cabbage were in the order of Miwon organic fertilizer ${\geq}$ Biovin organic fertilizer > Compost ${\leq}$ Peat.

Influences of DIF on Growth of Capsicum annuum 'Nokkwang' (주야간(晝夜間) 온도차(溫度差)(DIF)처리(處理)에 의한 고추 '녹광' 플러그묘(苗)의 생장반응(生長反應))

  • Capsicum annuum 'Nokkwang' plug seedlings were treated with 9 different day and night temperatures to investigate on growth and differentiation in controlled environment conditions. The plant height was the most affected by day temperature and DIF and stem length was the similler results as plant height. However, Leaf unfolding rate and leaf length and width increased as average daily temperature increased. and especially fresh weight was worst at ADT was $15^{\circ}C$ and increased as ADT increased. In contrast with fresh weight, chlorophyll content calculated highest when ADT was $15^{\circ}C$, and decreased as NT increased respectively. The stem lengths were not significantly different among treatments with exception of DT/NT=15/$15^{\circ}C$ which significantly decreased. The ultimate +DIF condition, DT/NT=30/$15^{\circ}C$, caused high T/R ratio due to abundant top growth. It is concluded that DT is $22.5^{\circ}C$, and NT is ranged from $15^{\circ}C$ to $22.5^{\circ}C$ to be produced short, healthy plug seedlings in Capsicum annuum 'Nokkwang'.

Effect of Seminal Sections of Tuber and Staking Methods on Growth and Yield of Chinese Yam (Dioscorea batatas Decne) (종근부위(種根部位) 및 지주형(支柱形)이 마의 생육(生育)과 수량(收量)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of seminal sections of tuber and staking methods on growth and yield of a chinese yam (Dioscorea batatas Decne). Tuber was divided into top head, head, median and tail which were used as seminal sections of tuber. The emergence of shoots was delayed in median and tail sections by 15 days as compared with top head and head sections. Sections from head and tail exhibited yield increase as high as 16 and 15%, respectively, compared to top head sections. Although flowering and bubil setting occurred almost at the same time in all staking methods, fresh weight of stem and leaves was higher in ${\wedge}-$, I-type stake supporting net than in the conventional stake. In the cultivar, 'Dan-ma', tuber yield didn't show a meaningful increase statistically by all staking methods. But ${\wedge}-$ and I-type stake supporting net increased the yield of the cultivar, 'Jang-ma', as high as 11 and 8%, respectively, compared to conventional stake. Also I-type stake was ideal supportor of net, considering the cost of management.

Optimum Double-Row Spacing in the Autumn Cultivation of Radish (Raphanus sativus L.) (가을 무(Raphanus sativus L.)두 줄 재배를 위한 적정 재식거리)

  • BACKGROUND: Radish (Raphanus sativus L.) is cultivated worldwide and one of important vegetables in Korea where year-round production of radish is possible. Most of radishes in autumn are cultivated with double-row spacing except for Gangwon-do where sing-row spacing is predominant. However, no research has been conducted on double-row spacing in radish cultivation so far. This study was conducted to reveal the optimum double-row spacing in autumn cultivation of radish. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using top two popular autumn radish cultivars 'S' and 'C', seeds were sown in spacing between rows of $55{\times}25$, $45{\times}25$, $35{\times}25$ and $25{\times}25cm$, and that within rows of $35{\times}28$, $35{\times}25$, $35{\times}22$ and $35{\times}19cm$. Plants were harvested 58 days after sowing and leaf weight, length and number, and root weight, length sugar content and pithiness were investigated. In the spacing between rows, no significant difference was observed in leaf weight, length and number in both cultivars; however, 25 cm of spacing between rows significantly reduced the root length and weight in 'S' and 'C' cultivars, respectively. In spacing within rows, 28, 25 and 22 cm did not affect fresh root weight in both cultivars, producing appropriate radish roots of 1,500g on average. However, 19 cm of spacing within rows did not reduced fresh root weight in 'S' cultivar but did significantly in 'C' cultivar (1148.3 g). Sugar contents and pithiness of roots were also affected by spacing but its effect was very small and different between cultivars. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that optimum double-row spacing in autumn radish cultivation is 35 cm and 22 cm of spacing between and within rows, respectively, the spacing that did not reduce the yield and quality of radish roots in two popular autumn radish cultivars.

Effects of Calcium Fertilization on the Occurrence of the Internal Brown Spot in Solanum tuberosum cv. Atlantic (칼슘施肥가 감자品種 '大西'의 內部褐色班點 發生에 미치는 影響)

  • Effects of calcium on the total tuber yield, dry matter content, internal brown spot and hollow heart of a processing potato cv. Atlantic were investigated to obtain some basic informations in summer cropping. The occurrence rate of the internal brown spots in cv. Atlantic tubers were highly decreased with the significant differences in the Ca-treated plots compared to the Ca-nontreated plots. However, no significant differences amongs Ca-treated plots were shown. Plant height and the number of main stems were not affected by the changes of the calcium levels, but top fresh weight was the highest in the plots of Ca(200kg/ha) level. In addition to its total yield, dry matter content, hollow heart was not affected by calcium fertilization. Therefore, the causal factor of the internal brown spot is attributed to the calcium deficiency in the tubers of cv. Atlantic.

Coal Bottom Ash Application on Park Site Soil and Its Impacts on Turfgrass Growth and Soil Quality

  • Bottom ash (BA) has different macro- and micronutrients such as B, Mo, Fe, Ca, and Mg, providing useful resources for plant growth and soil quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the applicability of artificial top-soil treated with BA in park area as a vegetation base material, especially for turfgrass growth. Collected BA was mixed with peat moss and clay at the ratio of 70:10:20 (w/w). In order to evaluate the park quality and turfgrass growth in park area, the artificial soil was applied with BA along with the control or without BA. Result showed that exchangeable K and P were increased by $11.4mg\;kg^{-1}$ and $163mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively, compared to the control soil when the artificial soil was treated with BA. Microbial population and enzyme activity (Acid-phosphatase, APA) in artificial soil having BA also increased as 2 times and 10%, respectively, compared to the control soil. Comparing turfgrass growth and yield between general soil and artificial soil, about 2 times higher plant yield (fresh weight) was observed as artificial soil was applied comparing to general soil. Furthermore, nutrient concentration in turfgrass was averaged as 0.440% for $P_2O_5$, 0.456% for CaO, 1.198% for $K_2O$ and 0.188% for MgO that all values are higher than general soil (0.323% for $P_2O_5$, 0.416% for CaO, 0.610% for $K_2O$ and 0.173% for MgO). Application of BA can be useful for vegetation base material in park site.

Changes of Tuber Yield and Total Sugar Content by Different Harvesting Dates in Liriope platyphylla WANG et TANG (맥문동(麥門冬) 수확시기(收穫時期)에 따른 괴근수량(塊根收量) 및 전당함량(全糖含量))

  • Experiment for analysing changes of growth, tuber yield and total sugar content during wintering was performed with Maekmoondong 1(L. platyphylla WANG et TANG). The growth of over ground characteristics including leaf length, tiller number and fresh leaf weight lasted to the middle of April. The growth and filling of tuber were progressed and got to the top of tuber yield (387kg/l0a) in the middle of March, showing the optimum harvesting time in Big Blue Lilyturf cultivation. Total sugar content showed the highest value(79%) in the late of January and was decreased gradually to the middle of March during wintering. There was highly significant negative correlation between total sugar content and tuber yield.

Effect of Rootstock on Rooting and Early Yield of Stenting-propagated Cut Roses

  • The study was conducted to investigate the effect of rootstock on growth and early yield of stenting-propagated cut roses (Rosa hybrida Hort.) 'Pink Aurora' and 'Yellow King'. The scions, prepared as single-node cuttings, each with a five-leaflet leaf, were grafted onto cuttings of Rosa indica 'Major', Rosa multiflora 'Chille Wonye No. 1', Rosa multiflora 'K-1', or Rosa multiflora 'Burr' as the rootstock. The rootstock cuttings were removed of all leaves and buds before grafting. The base of scion and the top of rootstock were held together and simultaneously cut at a $45^{\circ}$ angle for ease of grafting. Scion-rootstock unions were stuck in rockwool cubes and placed on a misted glasshouse bench for rooting before being transplanted into a rockwool slabs for cultivation. Rooting was the greatest in the 'Pink Aurora' and 'Yellow King' grafted on the rootstock Rosa indica 'Major'. In 'Pink Aurora', stem length, stem diameter, five-leaflet leaves per stem, and stem fresh weight of the harvested cut flowers were not affected by the rootstock. The greatest total yield of 'Pink Aurora' was obtained in plants grafted onto the Rosa indica 'Major' rootstock. Overall growth of 'Yellow King' was the greatest in plants grafted onto Rosa multiflora 'Burr' rootstock, although total yield was not affected by the rootstock. These results suggest that Rosa indica 'Major' is the most effective rootstock not only for rooting, but also for early yield and growth for stenting propagation of these cut roses.

Effect of Intercropping Ratio on the Cherry Tomato with Basil on the Growth, Physiological, and Productivity Parameters on the Rooftop in Urban Agriculture (옥상 도시농업에서 방울토마토(Lycopersicon esculentum)와 바질(Ocimum basilicum)간의 공영식재가 생육, 생리, 생산성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study evaluated the growth, physiological responses and productivity based on the intercropping ratio of cherry tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) with basil (Ocimum basilicum L.). on the rooftops to determine out the efficient ratio in urban agriculture. From April to September 2019, an experiment was conducted on the rooftop of Konkuk University Glocal Campus. Cherry tomato and basil were selected as companion plants for eco-friendly urban agriculture on the rooftops. Each plot was created with a width of 100 cm, length of 100 cm, and height of 25 cm. After installing drainage and waterproof layers from bottom to top, substrate was laid out with a height of 20 cm. Intercropping ratio was consisted of a single tomato plant (TC), 2:1 tomato to basil (T2B1), 1:1 tomato to basil (T1B1), 1:2 tomato to basil 2 (T1B2), and a single basil plant (BC), were conducted using a randomized complete plot design with five treatments and three replication (a total 15 plots). Measurements were divided into growth, physiological responses, and productivity parameters, and detailed items were investigated and analyzed by classifying them into plant height, leaf length, leaf width, number of leaves, root length, root collar caliper, chlorophyll contents, fresh weight, dry weight, number of fruit, fruit caliper, fruit weight, and sugar content. Comparative analyses of cherry tomato with basil plants by intercropping ratio, growth, physiological, and productivity responses are determined to be efficient when the ratio of cherry tomato to basil ratio is 2:1 or 1:1.

Growth and Bulb Characteristics of Extremely Early-Maturing Onion by Air Temperature Variation at Different Altitudes (해발고도별 기온변화에 따른 극조생 양파의 생육 및 구특성)

  • A study was carried out to determine the influence of climatic environments on the growth characteristics and bulb quality of extremely early-maturing type onion grown at different altitudes, such as 60m, 200m, 350m and 700m above sea level (ASL). The mean air temperature during the growing season of extremely early-maturing type onion (October 18 to April 27) was $10.8^{\circ}C$, $9.6^{\circ}C$, $8.1^{\circ}C$ and $6.1^{\circ}C$ at 60m, 200m, 350m and 700m ASL. The mean air temperature during the bulb growth period (March 16 to April 14) was recorded $10.5^{\circ}C$, $9.4^{\circ}C$, $7.9^{\circ}C$ and $6.0^{\circ}C$ at 60m, 200m, 350m and 700 m ASL. Plant height, neck diameter, leaf number, leaf area, top fresh weight and top dry weight were significantly increased in growing of extremely early-maturing type onion at 60m ASL. Bulb/neck diameter ratio increased rapidly under the same temperature regime. The diameter and weight of the bulb were also the largest at 60m ASL during the bulb growth period (daily mean temperature of $12.5^{\circ}C$). At 60m ASL, there was the highest bulb size like a height, diameter and weight of bulb related directly on onion yield in the bulb growth period from March 16 to April 14. In contrast, yield and bulb quality were considerably decreased at 700m ASL during the bulb growth stage (daily mean temperature of $8.4^{\circ}C$). The quantity of extremely early-maturing type onion has gradually decreased as the daily average temperature drops below $12.5^{\circ}C$ during the bulb growth stage (March 16 to April 14). As a result, the lower temperature (daily mean temperature below $12.5^{\circ}C$) during the bulb growth stage significantly decreased the size and quantity of bulb in direction proportion.
