  • In this study, numerical studies using a Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) method were carried out to estimate the green water load acting on the breakwater plate of bow deck of container carrier, KCS. For the green load water load analysis, a full load condition was considered. The relative motions at bow deck were calculated from the seakeepig analysis. Statistical analysis were carried out to estimate the long term response of the relative motions with the North Atlantic wave scatter diagram. The equivalent design wave was determined from the RAO of the relative motions at bow and the long term responses. CFD geometry modeling with three different locations and simulations for the green water loads were carried out in the equivalent design waves. A commercial CFD program, STAR-CCM+ Ver. 8.04, was used and the green water pressures on the breakwater plate were calculated successfully. The CFD analysis for green water loads can be used as a useful design tool for the evaluation of the breakwater plate of the container vessel.

  • The purpose of this 3-D numerical simulation is to calculate and examine a 500 kW Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) power performance and compare to calculation data(BEM method) from Delft University. The experimental approach, which has been the main method of investigation, appears to be reaching its limits, the cost increasing relate with the size of wind turbines. Hence, the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques and Navier-Stokes Solvers are considered a very serious contender. We has used the CFD software package CFX-TASC flow as a modeling tool to predict the power performance of a wind turbine on the basis of its geometry and operating data. The wind turbine with 40m diameters rotor, it was scaled to compare with the calculation data from delft university. The HAWT, which has eight-rpm variations are investigated respectively. The pitch angle is $+0.5^{\circ}$ and wind speed is fixed at 5m/s. The tip speed ratio (TSR) of the HAWT ranging from 2.89 to 9.63.

  • In this study, artificial neural networks (ANNs) were used to predict the settlement of pad footings on cohesionless soils based on standard penetration test. To achieve this, a computer programme was developed to calculate the settlement of pad footings from five traditional methods. The footing geometry (length and width), the footing embedment depth, $D_f$, the bulk unit weight, ${\gamma}$, of the cohesionless soil, the footing applied pressure, Q, and corrected standard penetration test, $N_{cor}$, varied during the settlement analyses and the settlement value of each footing was calculated for each method. Then, an ANN model was developed for each traditional method to predict the settlement by using the results of the analyses. The settlement values predicted from the ANN model were compared with the settlement values calculated from the traditional method for each method. The predicted values were found to be quite close to the calculated values. It has been demonstrated that the ANN models developed can be used as an accurate and quick tool at the preliminary designing stage of pad footings on cohesionless soils without a need to perform any manual work such as using tables or charts. Sensitivity analyses were also performed to examine the relative importance of the factors affecting settlement prediction. According to the analyses, for each traditional method, $N_{cor}$ is found to be the most important parameter while ${\gamma}$ is found to be the least important parameter.

  • In order to develop the optimum shape of an MQL carbide end-mill suitable for high speed machining of wing ribs which are a detailed part of larger wing structures, using a new material Al-Li alloy, a new MQL carbide end-mill is created that has various quantities of holes, hole sizes, and hole locations. A theoretical machining graph is generated using the hammer test and FRF simulation, and a machining test is performed in order to verify the machining stability in the high speed machining area. The optimum configuration of the MQL carbide end-mill is also presented through comparing the chattering, machining noise and cutting conditions, including the maximum cutting depth, rpm, and feed rate per teeth, for each cutter.

  • The full automation of welding has not yet been achieved partly because the mathematical model for the process parameters of a given welding task is not fully understood and quantified. Several mathematical models to control welding quality, productivity, microstructure and weld properties in arc welding processes have been studied. However, it is not an easy task to apply them to the various practical situations because the relationship between the process parameters and the bead geometry is non-linear and also they are usually dependent on the specific experimental results. Practically, it is difficult, but important to know how to establish a mathematical model that can predict the result of the actual welding process and how to select the optimum welding condition under a certain constraint. In this paper, an attempt has been made to develop an neural network model to predict the weld top-bead height as a function of key process parameters in the welding. and to compare the developed model and a simple neural network model using two different training algorithms in order to select an optimal neural network model.

  • This study describes the geometric characteristics and the 5-axis machining method in order to make end mill cutter coming with insert tips. End mill geometry is consisted of flute part and insert tip part. Flute part modeled by using ruled surfaces with constant helix angle, and insert tip part modeled by rectangular planes containing tapped hole of specified direction in its center. In this study, the modeled insert tip part considered both of a radial rake angle and a axial rake angle, because they were important cutting conditions. In order to machining the virtual end mill defined from geometric characteristics, we programmed a special software to machining the end mill considered in this study. This software can generate NC-codes about following processes, end milling or ball end milling of flute part end milling of rectangular plane, centering of hole, drilling of hole, and tapping of hole. Ant sampled end mills were modeled and machined on 5-axis CNC machining center with two index tables. Since machined end mills were very agreeable to designed end mills, we saw that the method proposed in this study can be very useful for manufacturing of end mill body with insert tip.

  • Recent developments in fractal theory suggest that fractal may provide a more realistic representation of characteristics of cementitious materials. In this paper, the roughness of fracture surfaces in cementitious material has been characterized by fractal theory. A systematic experimental investigation was carried out to examine the dependency of fracture parameters on the aggregate sizes as well as the loading rates. Three maximum aggregate sizes (4.76 mm, 12.7 mm, and 19.1 mm) and two loading rates (slow and fast loading rate) were used. A total of 25 compression tests and 25 tension tests were performed. All fracture parameters exhibited an increase, to varying degrees, when aggregates were added to the mortar matrix. The fracture surfaces of the specimens were digitized and analyzed. Results of the fractal analysis suggested that concrete fracture surfaces exhibit fractal characteristics, and the fractal geometry provide a useful tool for characterizing nonlinear fracture behavior of concrete. Fractal dimension D was monotonically increased as maximum aggregate sizes increase. A new fractal fracture model was developed which considers the size and shape of aggregate, and the crack paths in the constituent phases. Detailed analyses were given for four different types of fracture paths. The fractal fracture model can estimate fractal dimension for multiphase composites.

  • One of the possible alternatives of simulation-based time-dependent reliability assessment of pre-stressed biconcave and biconvex cable trusses, the Monte Carlo method, is applied in this paper. The influence of an excessive deflection of cable truss (caused by creep of cables and rheologic changes) on its time-dependent serviceability is investigated. Attention is given to the definition of the basic random variables and their statistical functions (basic, mutually dependent random variables such as the pre-stressing forces of the bottom and top cable, structural geometry, the Young's modulus of elasticity of the cables, and the independent variables, such as permanent load, wind, snow and thermal actions). Then, the determination of the response of the cable truss to the loading effects, and the definition of the limiting values considering serviceability of the structure are performed. The potential of the method, using direct Monte Carlo technique for simulation-based time-dependent reliability assessment as a powerful tool, is emphasized. Results obtained by the First order reliability method (FORM) are compared with those obtained by the Monte Carlo simulation technique.

  • A scalar metric for the assessment of hull surface producibility was known to be useful in estimating the complexity of a hull form of ships or large offshore structures by looking at their shape. However, it could not serve as a comprehensive measuring tool due to its lack of important components of the hull form such as longitudinals, stiffeners, and web frames attached to the hull surface. To have a complete metric for cost estimation, these structural members must be included. In this paper, major inner structural members are considered by measuring the complexity of their geometric shape. The final scalar metric thus consists of the classes containing inner members with various curvature magnitudes as well as the classes containing curved plates with single and double curvature distribution. Those two distinct metrics are merged into a complete scalar metric that accounts for the total cost estimation of complex structural bodies.

  • The two-dimensional unsteady flow around a vertical axis turbine for tidal stream energy conversion was investigated using a computational fluid dynamics tool solving the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The geometry of the turbine blade section was NACA653-018 aiifoil. The computational analysis was done at several different angles of attack and the results were compared with the corresponding experimental data for validation and calibration. Simulations were then carried out for the two-dimensional cross section of a vertical axis turbine. The simulation results demonstrated the usefulness of the method for the typical unsteady flows around vertical axis turbines. The optimum turbine efficiency was achieved for carefully selected combinations of the number of blades and tip speed ratios.
