There is a gap in our understanding of the behavior of fused and molten fuel salts containing unavoidable contamination, such as those due to fabrication, handling, or storage. Therefore, this work used calorimetry to investigate the change in liquidus temperature of PuCl3, having an unknown purity and that had been in storage for several decades. Further research was performed by additions of NaCl, making several compositions within the binary system, and summarizing the resulting changes, if any, to the phase diagram. The melting temperature of the PuCl3 was determined to be 746.5℃, approximately 20℃ lower than literature reported values, most likely due to an excess of Pu metal in the PuCl3 either due to the presence of metallic plutonium remaining from incomplete chlorination or due to the solubility of Pu in PuCl3. From the melting temperature, it was determined that the PuCl3 contained between 5.9 to 6.2mol% Pu metal. Analysis of the NaCl-PuCl3 samples showed that using the Pu rich PuCl3 resulted in significant changes to the NaCl-PuCl3 phase diagram. Most notably an unreported phase transition occurring at approximately 406℃ and a new eutectic composition of 52.7mol% NaCl-38.7mol% PuCl3-2.5mol% Pu which melted at 449.3℃. Additionally, an increase in the liquidus temperatures was seen for NaCl rich compositions while lower liquidus temperatures were seen for PuCl3 rich compositions. It can therefore be concluded that changes will occur in the NaCl-PuCl3 binary system when using PuCl3 with excess Pu metal. However, melting temperature analysis can provide valuable insight into the composition of the PuCl3 and therefore the NaCl-PuCl3 system.
Pacific yellowtail emperor, Lethrinus atkinsoni Seale, 1910, is one of the most targeted reef fish species in Southern Sulawesi, Indonesia. Therefore, assessing its stock is important to understand the condition of the population, providing valuable inputs for sustainable fisheries management in the area. Here we assess the stock condition of L. atkinsoni in Southern Sulawesi, Indonesia, using the length-based spawning potential ratio model. A total of 4,887 individuals were collected from commercially small-scale fishers from January to October 2022. The total length, sex, and gonad maturity of the individuals were examined. We observed that the fish length ranged from 10.5 to 39.5 cm, with an average length of 23.3 cm. The sex ratio was equal (1:1.2) between male and female individuals. Length at first maturity and length at first capture were 23.4 and 19.6 cm, respectively. In addition, we observed a growth coefficient of 0.45/year, with an asymptotic length of 41.14 cm and natural mortality of 0.6/year. Based on these life history parameters, we observed the spawning potential ratio (SPR) value of 12%, indicating an unsustainable fishery level (SPR of < 30%). Further concerns related to the sustainability of the species and strategy to rebuild stock of the L. atkinsoni in Southern Sulawesi are of utmost importance.
Swietenia mahagoni is one of the commercial timbers in Indonesia. Mahogany heartwood is an important characteristic as it relates to the natural durability and aesthetics of the wood. Lipophilic extractives are known to be involved in the heartwood formation process. Therefore, this study aims to determine the lipophilic compounds associated with heartwood formation. The n-hexane extract from sapwood and heartwood samples (1 to 5 years) was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that the content of n-hexane extract ranged from 0.76% to 2.45% based on dry wood. The main group of compounds identified in the lipophilic fraction consisted of sterols (β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, campasterol, and cyclolaudenol), fatty acids (palmitic, oleic, linoleic, and stearic acid), and hydrocarbons (pentadecane, 1-octadecane, hexadecane, cyclotetracosane, cycloeicosane, and cyclooctacosane) after heartwood formation. In addition, the hydrocarbon fraction was the largest, followed by sterols, fatty acids, and 1-heneicosanol. In the radial variation, the distribution of fatty acids was greater in the sapwood than in the heartwood (4-year-old). However, the reverse pattern was found at the age of 5 years. The lipophilic fraction was generally more abundant in the heartwood compared to the sapwood, especially at 5 years of age, with much higher levels than when the heartwood was forming (4 years). These findings show that when the heartwood formation begins, the lipid composition was not fully metabolized at the beginning of heartwood formation compared to 5-year-old trees.
Harvest control rules have been recently developed for some fisheries in Indonesia, including grouper fisheries, and are expected to reverse the trend of declining stocks. One of the proposed options of the harvest control rules is to implement the catch size limit. The catch size limit approach, however, is challenging, unless it is supported also with strong fisheries surveillance, law enforcement, and innovation. The catch size limit approach can be done by implementing changes in fishing methods and gear, including the application of different hook sizes in the hook and line fishing gear. This study examines the impact of different hook sizes on the length at first capture (Lc) and on the bell-shaped maximum selectivity using various selectivity models of the two targeted grouper species (Plectropomus leopardus and Plectropomus maculatus) in the Saleh bay, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. We found that increasing hook size influences the grouper's catch size, increasing the Lc and the bell-shaped maximum selectivity of both species. Based on our findings, hook size can be used as one of the practical tools for grouper management measures, as part of harvest control rules to improve grouper stock in Indonesia.
Purpose: This pilot study was conducted to develop a novel test setup for the in vitro assessment of the primary stability of dental implants. This was achieved by characterising their long-term behaviour based on the continuous recording of micromotions resulting from dynamic and cyclic loading. Methods: Twenty screw implants, each 11 mm in length and either 3.8 mm (for premolars) or 4.3 mm (for molars) in diameter, were inserted into the posterior region of 5 synthetic mandibular models. Physiological masticatory loads were simulated by superimposing cyclic buccal-lingual movement of the mandible with a vertically applied masticatory force. Using an optical 3-dimensional (3D) measuring system, the micromotions of the dental crowns relative to the alveolar bone resulting from alternating off-centre loads were concurrently determined over 10,000 test cycles. Results: The buccal-lingual deflections of the dental crowns significantly increased from cycle 10 to cycle 10,000 (P<0.05). The deflections increased sharply during the first 500 cycles before approaching a plateau. Premolars exhibited greater maximum deflections than molars. The bone regions located mesially and distally adjacent to the loaded implants demonstrated deflections that occurred synchronously and in the same direction as the applied loads. The overall spatial movement of the implants over time followed an hourglass-shaped loosening pattern with a characteristic pivot point 5.5±1.1 mm from the apical end. Conclusions: In synthetic mandibular models, the cyclic reciprocal loading of dental implants with an average masticatory force produces significant loosening. The evasive movements observed in the alveolar bone suggest that its anatomy and yielding could significantly influence the force distribution and, consequently, the mechanical behaviour of dental implants. The 3D visualisation of the overall implant movement under functional cyclic loading complements known methods and can contribute to the development of implant designs and surgical techniques by providing a more profound understanding of dynamic bone-implant interactions.
The ichthyofauna and the structure of fish community were surveyed from April to November 1997 at eighteen stations in the Yonggang river which is a first tributary located at the middle reach of the Nakdong river system. During the surveyed period, 32 species belonging to ten families were collected. Of them cyprinid fish occupied 53.1% (17 species) and cobitid fish 15.6% (5 species). Thirteen species (40.6%) were known as Korean endemic species. Dominant species were Zacco temmincki (32.78%) and Moroco oxycephalus (15.10%). Zacco platypus, Pungtungia herzi. Niwaella multifasciata, and Odontobutis platycephala were common species. Rare species which occupied less than 0.1% of total individuals were Lampetra reissneri, Pseudorasbora parva, Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae, Microphysogobio koreensis, Gobiobitia naktongensis, Cobitis rotundicaudata, Nemacheilus toni, Silurus asotus, Silurus microdorsalis, Siniperca scherzeri, and Oreochromis niloticus. A tendancy were shown in regional distribution that Moroco oxycephalus dominated in upper stream, Zacco temmincki and Moroco oxycephalus in mid - upper stream, Zacco temmincki and Niwaella multifasciata in mid - lower stream, and Zacco platypus and microphysogobioid fishes in lower stream. St. 11 which located in mid- reach of Yongam stream and St. 15 and 18 which located in main stream had the most stable and diverse community structure, but St. 1, 5, and 7 were unstable and the simplest community structure.
Survey on soybean parasitic nematodes has been undertaken in order to get an ideas about the distribution of nemic fauna. Total 71 soil samples were collected from soybean fields in Gyeongbug and Chungbug provinces. Eighteen species belonging to fourteen different genera were found associated with soybean, Glycine max. The results were as follows: Aphelenchus avenae, Circonemoides informis, Ditylenchus dipsaci, Helicotylenchus pseudorobustus, Heterodera glycines, Hirschmanniella imamuri, Meloidogyne hapla, Meloidogyne incognita, Paratylenchus pandus, Pratylenchus thornei, Pratylenchus vulnus, Psilenchus hilarulus, Rotylenchus sp. Tylenchorhynchus clay toni, Tylenchorhynchus dubius, Tylenchorhynchus nudus, Tylenchus sp. Xiphinema americanum were found in soybean fields. In frequency of occurring nematodes by localities, soybean cyst nematode was higher in Chungbug by $70\%$, while $50\%$ in Gyeongbug. But rook-knot nematode was higher in Gyeongbug by $54.1\%$, while $19.1\%$ in Chungbug. In density of nematode, Heterodera was the most dominant as 200.4 populations per 100ml soil, Meloidogyne as 107.1 populations, Rotylenchus, Xiphinema, Aphelenchus in decreasing order. In survey of loss, density of soybean cyst nematode in heavily infested fields was 155 cysts per 100ml soil while 35 cysts in slightly infested fields. Seventy percent of soybean yields was decreased when comparing with average 64.2kg/10a in heavily infested fields and average 209.5kg/10a in slightly infested. Correlation coefficients among number of soybean cyst and yields, pod weight, number of pod was negative as r- 0.57, 0.47, 0.38 over all localities.
