  • The feeding habits of Chaenogobius gulosus were studied based on an examination of the stomach contents of 333 specimens collected between October 2008 and September 2009 in the coastal waters of Tongyeong, Korea. The specimens ranged in standard length (SL) from 2.0 to 12.6 cm. C. gulosus is an omnivore and consumes mainly seaweeds (such as Ulva pertusas), crabs and gastropods. Its diet also included small quantities of bivalves, polychaetes, insects, shrimps, mysids and amphipods. Smaller individuals (<6 cm SL) consumed mainly gastropods. The proportion of these prey items decreased with increasing fish size, and this decrease paralleled the increased consumption of seaweeds. Seasonal changes in the diet of C. gulosus were significant. Seaweeds were consumed more during spring and summer compare with other seasons.

  • Two flatfish species were collected between January 2010 and August 2010 from fishing vessels operating with fishing, gill net and shrimp trawls along the coastal waters off Tongyeong, Korea in order to examine feeding habits. Kareius bicoloratus fed mainly on bivalves and fishes, whereas Clidoderma asperrimum fed mainly on ophiuroids. Our feeding strategy graphical method reveled that K. coloratus and C. asperrimum were specialist predator, with a narrow niche width.

  • To understand interrelations between water quality and community structure of phytoplankton around the season of red tide outbreak, field surveys were conducted 10 times off the coast of Tongyeong from July to September in 2002. Because of heavy rain for 10 days, environmental conditions were changed and differed from the previous year, sustaining high nutrients and low salinity. During the surveyed period 48 species of 29 genera of phytoplankton were identified, and diatom and dinoflagellate was $51.8\%\;and\;38.0\%,$ respectively, At the time of bloom, cell counts of C. polykrikoides were outstanding but the number of species remarkably decreased. There were striking differences in dominant species among research stations before the bloom. Diatoms were the most dominant group in the whole study area in that period. Diversity and evenness index were highest just before outbreak of the red tides (2 Aug, 2002). During the bloom (4 Aug.), it decreased to the lowest value and then began to increase slowly. The result of PCA on water quality vs phytoplankton biomass showed that the land loads of nutrient may be the main cause of summer rally of phytoplankton biomass.

  • To assess environmental characteristics of the aquaculture area in Tongyeong, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorous (DIP) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), and acid volatile sulfur (AVS) were measured in seawater and sediment samples collected from 10 locations of Tongyeong coastal area from July to December in 2013. The quality of the seawater may be affected by seasonal variation rather than the distance from fish farm. However, sediment was contrary to seawater; the distance from fish farm may be a main factor to affect COD and AVS in sediment than season and other parameters. It is expected that contaminated organic sediments of fishery located in semi-closed bay are rapidly dispersed into surrounding waters due to fast current.

  • Marine algal flora and community structure were examined at four sites at Tongyeong, Korea, from February to December 2009. Eighty-two algal species were identified, including 10 green, 25 brown, and 47 red algae. During the study period, the number of species was highest at the Dukpo (61 species) site followed by the Gajodo (60 species), Yepo (58 species), and Chilchundo (53 species) sites. Seaweed biomass ranged from 578.11 to 678.26 g, with the maximum and minimum at Chilchundo and Yepo, respectively. Dominant species in term of biomass were Sargassum thunbergii at Yepo, Dukpo, and Gajodo and Gelidium amansii at Chilchundo. The vertical distribution from the high to low intertidal zone was Sargassum thunbergii and Chondria crassicaulis; Sargassum thunbergii and Ulva linza; Ulva pertusa, Sargassum fulvellum, and Gelidium amansii. Two groups clearly segregated in a cluster analysis, a Yepo/Dukpo group (group A) and a Gajodo/Chilchundo (B), indicating relatively strong differences in similarity. The seaweed community structure of group A was characterized by higher biomass and higher species richness of brown algae than were observed in group B. Additionally, the biomass ratio and the species richness of green algae was lower in group A. These differences in seaweed community structure may have been resulted from the effects of cold effluents.

  • The samples of cultured flounder (Paralichtys olivaceus) were collected from Tongyeong and Yosu in Korea and Nagasaki in Japan and processed to analyses of body and serum. Body size and weight were not significantly different between Korea and Japan produced. But the body weight of average size of flounder produced from Nagasaki was the highest from the samples. The average of fish body was not significantly different from the samples. The water content of fish body was lower in samples from Nagasaki and fat content was higher in the samples from Nagasaki and followed by Yosu and Tongyeong. The percentage of body water, fat and protein contents was Nagasaki, Yosu and Tongyeong in the order of high values. Japanese flounder showed relatively high content of body fat and muscle. The cholesterol of serum was highest in the samples of Yosu. The triglyceride of serum was highest in the samples of Nagasaki. Lipoprotein was highest in the samples of Nagasaki and enriched fat content in LDL fraction.

  • The feeding habits of scorpion fish, Sebastiscus marmoratus, were studied using 324 specimens collected in the coastal waters of Tongyeong, from January to December, 2009. The size of the specimens ranged from 9.8 to 30.1 cm in standard length (SL). S. marmoratusis was a piscivore that consumed mainly teleosts such as Engraulis japonicus, Clupea pallasi and gobid fishes. Of the fish species Engraulis japonicus was the most preferred prey. Its diet also includes shrimps and crabs. Hermit crabs, polychaetes, bivalves and euphausia were minor preys. Smaller individuals (<13 cm SL) fed mainly on shrimps, crabs and fishes. The proportion of shrimps and crabs decreased as body size increased, whereas the consumption of fishes gradually increased. Fishes accounted for almost stomach contents of larger individuals (more than 19 cm SL). Seasonal changes in the S. marmoratusis diet were significant. Fishes was most common prey during summer, autumn and winter, whereas crabs and shrimps were mainly consumed during spring.

  • With the improvement of living standards, the ventilation for the mitigation of indoor or outdoor air-pollution problems has recently attracted a lot of attention. Consequently, the ventilation for the supply of outdoor fresh air into a room is treated as an important building-design factor. The ventilation is generally divided into the forced and natural types; here, the former can control the ventilation rate by using mechanical devices, but it has the disadvantages of the equipment costs, maintenance costs, and noise generation, while the latter is applied to most workshops due to the absence of noise and the low installation and maintenance costs. In this experimental study, the ventilation performance of a typical rotating-type natural ventilator, which is called a "wind turbine," was investigated with the outdoor-wind velocity and the indoor/outdoor-temperature difference. From the experiment results, it was confirmed that the temperature difference of $10^{\circ}C$ corresponds to the ventilation driving force with an outdoor-wind velocity of 1.0 m/s. Additionally, the intake-opening area of a building also exerts a great effect on the ventilation rates.

  • The Korean aquaculture industry was generally began in the 1970s and has gradually increased. Now, the number of households is about 7,068 and the scale of an aquaculture farm is about 248,014 ha; the value of all production in the industry is estimated to be about 1602.2 billion won. The aquaculture industry is very valuable and important for future food resources. However, the aquaculture industry was damaged by several marine ecological disturbance causing organisms. The Ascdiella aspersa colonized on the shell of scallop and then scallops were detached from rope. The patterns of damage in the aquacultures were observed in Tongyeong (oyster), Geojedo (oyster), and Gangneung (sea squirt) in June, 2017, as well as in Tongyeong (oyster) in November, 2017 by SCUBA divers. The species Halichondria bowerbanki, Bugula neritina, Mytilus galloprovincialis, Balanus amphitrite, Ascidiella aspersa, Ciona intestinalis, Didemnum sp, Styela plicata in Tongyeong, M. galloprovincialis, A. aspersa, C. intestinalis, D. vexillum, S. plicata in Geojedo, and M. galloprovincialis in Gangneung were all usually found in their farms. The marine ecological disturbance causing organisms gave rise to a reduced number of aquaculture products.
