  • Tolerable vertical displacement of a bridge is dependent on the superstructure-type, slope, span, and etc.. In the design stage, however, resultant force of cross section is examined supposed that the settlement is 1 cm at the bearing point. And the 1cm is sometimes considered as if the criteria of allowable foundation settlement. It is needed to establish the criteria of the tolerable displacement for the small and middle bridges which are widely used in domestic area. The design data of domestic bridges including expressway bridges were collected and analyzed according to the types of superstructures and foundations. And numerical simulations were conducted for RC rigid frame bridges, PSC girder bridges, IPC girder bridges, PSC box girder bridges, and steel box girder bridges to examine the tolerable displacements.

  • When a foundation on the ground with tunnel is constructed, the ultimate bearing capacity of a footing is reduced by tunnel. In practice, structure may bate a considerable damage because of large settlement. This study shows that the settlement which is caused by variety of the ultimated bearing capacity leads fatal damages to the footing above tunnel. Therefore, it is necessary to study on the reduction both of the ultimate bearing capacity which leads a failure and of tolerable settlement which satisfies the safety of the building. For this reason, the variety of ultimated bearing capacity was analyzed using tub-dimensional elasto-plastic finite difference method in this paper. As a result, bearing capacity of the foundation above tunnel should be determined after establishing limit of allowable settlement and considering reduction-ratio of bearing capacity.

  • In this research problems of recent design methods and their improvement for SIP in domestic areas were studied by using the characteristics of load-settlement curves and bearing capacity from field loading tests. Elastic and plastic settlement for total settlement in each loading step conducted domestic areas had a tendency. From these tendency and bearing capacity determined by loading tests we can ascertain that empirical chart can be assistant tool in SIP design. It showes that SIP design using N-value in domestic area with soil condition of grarute type results in very conservative bearing capacity, to be opposed in soil with unprofitable geological condition the design can be insecure. Also, we can ascertain that Meyerhof's bearing capacity used modified N-value on tip part of pile is more applicable than recent design method where tip bearing capacity is 20NAp N-value limited to 50. These results show that modified design method can he more economic than before because of using pile's bearing capacity to tolerable load of pile material.

  • In this paper, reliability analysis of surface settlement by ground water drawdown is performed using a reliability-groundwater flow numerical model. The result is compared with that of the deterministic model to evaluate the influence of the uncertainty from hydraulic conductivity in the soft ground as well as to determine the range of hydraulic conductivity of grouted ground. From the analyses, it was found that probability of failure to exceed the tolerable settlement was very high, if the hydraulic conductivity of grouted ground is decided from the deterministic flow model only. Reliability analysis which evaluates variance of hydraulic conductivity should be used together with the deterministic model for grouting design of tunnels to prevent ground water drawdown.

  • In this research, problems of recent design methods and their improvement for SIP(Soil-Cement Injected precast Pile) in domestic areas were studied by using the properties of load-settlement curves and bearing capacity from field loading tests. Elastic and plastic settlement for total settlement in each loading step of loading tests conducted in domestic areas has been shown to have a tendency. From this tendency and bearing capacity determined by loading tests, it could be ascertained that empirical chart could be an assistant tool in SIP design. • This study determined the concentrations of lead and cadmium in 18 species of commonly consumed fish and assessed the risk based on provisional tolerable weekly (monthly) intakes [PTW(M)I] % as affected by behavioral characteristics, such as migration and settlement. In the 18 species, the mean concentrations of lead and cadmium were higher in the 11 species of migratory fish (llargehead hairtail Trichiurus lepturus, chub mackerel Scomber japonicus, Pacific saury Cololabis saira, skipjack tuna Katsuwonus pelamis, Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus, anchovy Engraulis japonicus, Alaska pollack Theragra chalcogramm, brown croaker Miichthys miiuy, Japanese Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus niphonius, yellow croaker Larimichthys polyactis, and Pacific herring Clupea pallasii) than in the seven demersal species (red stingray Dasyatis akajei, brown sole Pleuronectes herzensteini, bastard halibut Paralichthys olivaceus, conger eel Conger myriaster, blackmouth angler Lophiomus setigerus, rockfish Sebastes schlegelii, and filefish Stephanolepis cirrhifer). Based on the mean concentrations, the PTWI % of lead and cadmium in commonly consumed migratory fish were 1.900 and 2.986%, respectively, which were higher than the values for lead and cadmium in the commonly consumed demersal fishes (0.257 and 0.318%, respectively). The estimation of weekly (monthly) intakes and target hazard quotients for the toxic elements lead and cadmium revealed that the commonly consumed migratory and demersal fish do not pose any health risks for consumers.
