Mechanical Properties of Waste Tire Powder - Added Lightweight Soil (폐타이어 분말을 이용한 혼합경량토의 역학적 특성 연구)

  • This paper investigates the mechanical characteristics of waste tire powder-added lightweight soil in which dredged soils, waste tire powder and bottom ash were reused. In this study, 5 groups of soil samples were prepared with varing contents of waste tire powder ranged from 0% to 100% at 25% intervals by the dredged soil weight. The mixed soil samples were subjected to unconfined compression and elastic wave tests to investigate their unconfined compressive strengths and dynamic properties. Test results showed that the unconfined compressive strength and unit weight decreased as the waste tire powder contents increased, but axial strain at failure increased. Also stress-strain relationship of waste tire powder-added lightweight soil showed a ductile behavior rather than a brittle behavior. The result of elastic wave tests indicated that the higher waste tire powder content, the lower elastic wave velocity and the lower shear modulus (G).

Shear and CBR Characteristics of Dredge Soil-Bottom Ash-Waste Tire Powder-Mixed Lightweight Soil (준설토-저회-폐타이어 혼합경량토의 전단 및 CBR 특성)

  • This study investigated the shear and CBR characteristics of dredge soil-bottom ash-waste tire powder-mixed lightweight soil, which was developed to recycle dredged soil, bottom ash, and waste tire powder. Test specimens were prepared with various contents of waste tire powder ranging from 0 to 100% at 50% intervals by the weight of the dry dredged soil. Several series of triaxial compression tests and CBR tests were conducted. The shear strength characteristics of the lightweight soil were compared using two different shear tests (triaxial compression test and direct shear test). The experimental results indicated that the internal friction angle of the lightweight soil obtained by the direct shear tests was greater than that by the triaxial shear tests. However, the cohesion value obtained by the triaxial shear tests was greater than that by the direct shear tests. The CBR value of the lightweight soil decreased from 35% to 15% as waste tire powder content increased.

  • This paper presents an experimental results on the environmental characteristics of waste tire. Experimental program includes a set of laboratory leaching tests and field pilot test for leachate analysis. Laboratory tests were conducted to illustrate how properties such as TOC, pH, turbidity and Zn change with tire sizes and drain conditions. In field pilot test, water samples were collected form a drainage system installed below the tire-reinforced retaining wall and analyzed for chemical quality. Laboratory leaching tests performed on various particle sizes of waste tire indicated that as tire size is increased, the concentration of leachate is decreased. In continuous flow column tests, the concentration of leachate decreased with the number of exposure periods or pore volumes flushed through the waste tire. However, during pause flow column tests, the concentration of leachates were increased with time. Field monitoring of effluent indicated that no significant adverse effects on ground water quality had occurred over a period of 12 months.

  • Studies have proved that the mechanical properties of concrete, suddenly is dropped off with employing waste materials as replacements. The effectiveness of fibre addition on the structural stability of concrete has been indicated in recent investigations. There are different waste aggregates and fibres as plastic, rubber tire, coconut, and other natural wastes, which have been evaluated throughout the last decades. The fibres incorporation has a substantial effect on the properties of concrete mix subjected to different loading scenarios. This paper has reviewed different types of wastes and the effect of typical fibres including Poly Ethylene Terephthalate (PET), rubber tire, and waste glass. Furthermore, waste plastic and waste rubber has been especially studied in this review. Although concretes containing PET fibre revealed a reduction in compressive strength at low fibre fractions, using PET is resulted to micro-cracking decrement and increasing flexibility and flexural strength. Finally, according to the reviews, the conventional waste fibres are well-suited to mitigated time-induced damages of concrete and waste fibres and aggregates could be a reliable replacement for concrete.

Oil Recovery through Wasts Tire/Wasts Oil Pyrolysis (폐타이어/폐유의 복합 열분해에 의한 오일화 공정개발 연구)

  • In this paper, some representative waste tire pyrolysis were investigated together with the analysis of the problems associated with the commercialization of various waste tire treatment technologies. Also, R & D results on recovering the oil from the pyrolysis of waste tires, when waste oil was used as a heating medium, were summarized in this study. Experimental results show that the present pyrolysis process has both lower pyrolytic temperature and higher pyrolysis rate than usual one and that the quality of the product oil and residue obtained was relatively even with large availability.

Influence of Surface Functionalized Waste Tire Ponder on the Thermal and Rheological Properties of Polypropylene/Waste Tire Powder Composite (표면기능화된 폐타이어 분말이 PP/폐타이어분말 복합체의 열 및 유변학적 성질에 미치는 영향)

  • The waste tire powder is modified with allylamine in the presence of ultraviolet radiation and the influence of surface modification on the thermal and rheological properties of polypropylene/waste tire powder composites was investigated. X-ray diffraction studies of PP/waste tire powder composite without compatibilizer, such as maleic anhydride-g-polypropylene (MA-PP), shows the increase in peak intensity of ${\beta}$ crystalline peaks, whereas it completely disappears in the presence of the MA-PP. Differential scanning calorimetry results further supported the above fact. The melt viscosities and storage modulus of the composites with modified waste tire powder show higher value than that of composites with unmodified powder and it is attributed to the interaction between amine group on modified powder surface and maleic anhydride of MA-PP.

  • Environmental problems due to waste tire and waste plastics let us develop practical and economically feasible products. For this purpose, the characteristics of waste tire/plastic composites including various additives were examined using internal mixer. Experimental results indicated that the tensile strength and the flexural strength of waste tire/plastic composites decreased with the waste tire content. When 20 wt% of PP was added to the waste tire (60 wt%)/HDPE composites, the tensile strength was 1.5 times higher than the composite without PP, It was also found that the strain at break of composites increased by 2.5 times with 10 wt% addition of ethylene vinyl acetate and styrene ethylene butylenes styrene respectively. When 10 wt% of glass fiber was added to waste tire (60 wt%)/ HDPE composites, the tensile strength was 63% higher than the composite without glass fiber.

Adsorption Treatment Characteristics of Cadmium Ion Containing Wastewater Using Waste Tire as an Adsorbent (폐타이어를 흡착제로 한 카드뮴 함유 폐수 처리 특성)

  • Adsorption features of $Cd^{2+}$ on waste tire particles have been investigated for the purpose of enhanced wastes recycling along with the development of an economic process for wastewater treatment. The isoelectric point of waste tire particles was found to be ca. pH 7 and the adsorbed amount of $Cd^{2+}$ was increased with pH under experimental conditions. The variation of the adsorption behavior of $Cd^{2+}$ with pH was well explained by the change of the electrokinetic potential of waste tire particles according to the pH. Adsorption of $Cd^{2+}$ was observed to reach its equilibrium within 45 minutes after the adsorption started under experimental conditions and followed the Freundlich model well. Kinetic analysis showed that the adsorption reaction of $Cd^{2+}$ was second order and thermodynamic estimation substantiated the endothermic behavior of $Cd^{2+}$ adsorption. As the amount of adsorbent increased, more adsorption of $Cd^{2+}$ was accomplished and the adsorption capacity of adsorbent was found to be enhanced by its pre-treatment with NaOH. Also, the adsorption of adsorbate was promoted as the ionic strength of wastewater was increased.

Reduction Effect of Railroad Vibration by Utilizing Waste Tires (폐타이어의 철도진동 저감효과에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • This paper describes the results of a series of field experiments which are carried out to assess the reduction effect of railroad vibration by utilizing waste tires. The ground vibration due to train service is measured in Honam Railroad line and Kyongbu Railroad line to assess the ground vibration with the domestic railroad line and train type before field model test. From the results of these tests, frequency on train service is presented from 5Hz to 100Hz and a range of excellence frequency is presented to be about from 20Hz to 40Hz in the domestic railroad line. Also, plate bearing tests are conducted to evaluate the variation of bearing capacity with different thickness of the waste tire layer and the fill layer. Finally, field model test is performed by using tire chips ($5cm{\times}5cm$ in size) as a reduction material of railroad vibration. The reduction effect of railroad vibration by utilizing waste tires increases with increasing the thickness of the waste tire layer and the frequency of the vibration source. The results of this experimental study was shown that the waste tire can be used for reduction of the railroad vibration.

  • The 10t/d pyrolysis demonstration plant for waste tire recycling have been constructed and operated for commissioning of the plant. The plant have the tube reactor with chain conveyer attached disk. The reactor temperature is 500$\sim$600deg.C and pressure is -80$\sim$-100mmHg. Non-condensable gas is used as fuel for pyrolysis heat source.
