  • In order to find out the optimum harvest (dipping) date combined with sowing date on yield and nutrient quality of forage rye which is suitable at the Southern part of Korea, Paldanghomil variety was grown Sep. 2001 to May 2002 at Sunchon National University, and yield and nutrient quality of plant were observed. As harvest date and sowing date were delayed, the plant length was longest, number of leaves per plant was increased in the time of May 20 clipping. Fresh yield was the heaviest in the time of May 20 clipping and Oct. l0 sowing, and the most dry matter yield was the heaviest in the time of May 20 clipping and Oct. 10 sowing. Content of crude protein was the highest and that of crude fiber such as NDF, ADF, hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin were the lowest in the late time of clipping and sowing. Further more IVDMD was high and dry matter yield and digestible dry matter yield were the highest in the time of May 20 dipping and Oct. 10 sowing. Judging from the results reported above, at optimum harvest (dipping) date combined with sowing date for yield and nutrient quality of forage rye seemed to be the time of May 20 clipping and Oct. 10 sowing.

  • Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) was the sensation of discomfort and stiffness in the muscle, often after taking part in unaccustomed physical activity. No universally accepted treatment exist. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of cryotherapy and intermittent compression on the delayed onset muscle soreness. Flexion elbow joint position and extension(Universal Goniometer). pain(Muscle Soreness Rating Scale) and mechanical pain threshold(Algometer) were measured before 30minutes DOMS was induced. The data were analyzed by measure of Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal-Wallis test. The result were as follow; 1. There were no significantly differences between groups or over time in relation to range of motion. 2. Muscle Soreness Rating was significantly high in cryotherapy and intermittent compression at 48, 72 hours after DOMS was induced(p<.05). 3. Mechanical pain threshold begin to increased at 24 hours and significantly in cryotherapy and intermittent compression groups at 48, 72 hours after DOMS was induced(p>.05). 4. A negative Correlation between muscle soreness rating scale and mechanical Pain threshold graphs at 24, 48, and 72 hours after exercise indicated in cryotherapy and intermittent compression groups.

  • Early maturing hybrids(Comet 80, Comet 85 and Linda) and mid-late maturing hybrid (Suwon 19) were grown at Suwon to study the influence of maturity, plant population, and sowing date (45, 55, and 65 days delayed from the recommended sowing date of Suwon 19) on the dry matter yields, percentage ears and TDN yields. Com was planted at the density of 60 x 20, 50 x 20 and 40 x 20 em. Dry matter yields were not significantly different between the early and mid-late maturing hybrids in the delayed sowing time, but significantly higher in 20 x 50cm of planting density in early maturing hybrids. As sowing was delayed to Jun. 22 ear content decreased from 40.3% (early maturing hybrid) to 6.7% (Suwon 19). This resulted in significantly 24.1% higher TDN yield in Comet 85 than in Suwon 19.

  • BACKGROUND: The freezing injury by pruning can be reduced by suspending pruning work when severe cold weather (-23 to -49℃) is forecast. Minimum air temperature of the study area, Gunwi region at February 3, 2012 was -21.9℃, and the subzero temperature continued until April 8, 2012. This study was conducted in two years to investigate the effect of delaying winter pruning until full bloom on shoot growth and fruit quality of 'Fuji'/M.9 apple trees. METHODS AND RESULTS: The time of pruning were March 26 for dormant, April 3 for bud break, and May 2 for full bloom. The winter pruning at full bloom significantly reduced fruit weight for two years compared with the control (winter pruning at dormant), and shoot growth was reduced only in the following year. There was no significant effect of delaying winter pruning at bud break on soluble solid content, fruit red color, return bloom, and pruning weight for two years compared with the control. CONCLUSION(S): These results indicated the delaying winter pruning at bud break of 'Fuji'/M.9 apple tree did not offer any disadvantage over comparable dormant pruning, since the fruit quality was not affected. The delayed pruning at full bloom resulted in decreased fruit weight, though shoot growth, fruit quality, and return bloom were not affected by the delayed pruning. So, the delayed pruning should be considered carefully only for the fruit tree orchards in diseases.

  • Effect of shifting planting-time and different nitrogen on the yield and characteristics of plant growth in safflower, Chrthamus Tinctorius L. This study was carried out to investigate the optimum sowing-date and the ecological variations due to differerent amount of nitrogen for safflower on the Experiment Farm of Sang Ji college from March 17 to may 16, 1980, sowing seeds with an interval of 10 days and the amount of nitrogen were applied in 5 levels (Non, half-standard, standard, one and half-ordinary amount-No and twice amount). The triple super phosphate and pottassium chloride were applied only in standard amount. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. As sowing-date was delayed, the germination-ratio decreased, germinating speed increased, and the time required to attain the most vigorous germinating stage and days required for germination shortened. 2. Plant height, number of branch and stem diameter showed a decrease as sowing-date was delayed. And at the same time, plant height and number of branch showed a tendency to increase as amount of nitrogen was increased. 3. As sowing-date was delayed, the number of pods and the weight of 1000-grains were decreased. Moreover, the earlier sowing-date was, the more it increased. And as amount of nitrogen was increased, number of pods and yield also were strikingly increased. 4. The fresh-weight of flower with orange and orange-red colour, as influenced by the different sowing-date, was found out to be largest at the begining of April. But increasing amount of nitrogen did not show influence upon the promotion of flowering. 5. Judging from the results reported above, the optimum sowing-date of safflower seemed to be the begining of April; also the culture of safflower seemed to be the effects of much amount of nitrogen.

  • The present study is concerned with the demonstration of the influence of long term treatment with caffeine and phenobarbital on pentobarbital sleeping time, gastric secretion, increase rate of body weight and brain and liver weight in rats. The experimental subjects were rats weighing about 140 to 150 g, each of them was isolated in a separate cage. Each group was given 1 ml normal saline solution as control, caffeine 10 mg/kg and phenobarbital 30 mg/kg as experimental groups. All drugs were injected intraperitoneally, daily for 4 weeks. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. There was significant difference between before and after injection of drugs (caffeine citrate 10 mg/kg and phenobarbital 30 mg/kg) on pentobarbital sleeping time. The sleeping time of caffeine treated group was delayed (22.4%, p<0.01) significantly compared with that of before injection. The sleeping time of phenobarbital treated group was markedly shortened (93.6%, p<0.001) compared with that of before injection of drugs. 2. The volume, free and total acidity and pH of gastric juice determined five hours after pyloric ligation in fasting rats were not significantly changed in experimental groups compared with control group. However the volume of gastric juice was increased 25% in both caffeine and phenobardital treated group. 3. The increased ratio of body weight revealed no remarkable difference compared with intial body weight. However, caffeine treated group showed markedly increased body weight after first and second week of injection. 4. The brain and liver weight in experimental group showed no significant difference compared with control group (as percentage of body weight).

  • To understand the effects of fluctuations in dam discharge due to river environments and phytoplankton communities, we monitored such environments and phytoplankton communities biweekly, from February 2001 to February 2002 and from February 2004 to February 2005, in the lower Han River (LHR), South Korea. The phytoplankton abundance during the dry season was approximately two times higher than that during the rainy season. In particular, fluctuations in diatom assemblages, which constituted over 70% of the total phytoplankton abundance, were affected severely by the changes in the discharge. When a large quantity of water in a dam was discharged into the LHR, the conductivity and the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) decreased rapidly, whereas the concentrations of suspended solids (SS), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), and dissolved silica (DSi) increased immediately. Time-delayed relationship also revealed that the dam discharge had an immediately significant negative relationship with phytoplankton abundance. On the whole, fluctuations in phytoplankton communities in the LHR were influenced much more by hydrodynamics such as dam discharge than by the availability of nutrients. Thus, the variability in these concentrations usually parallels the strength of river flow that is associated with summer rainfall, with higher values during periods of high river discharge.

  • The influence of moving rainstorms to runoff was analysed for the nonsymmetric shaped basins using kinematic wave theory. The distribution types of moving rainstorms are uniform, advanced, delayed and intermediate type, the nonsymmetric shaped basins are square, oblong and elongated shape. The runoff hydrographs were simulated and the characteristics were compared with the symmetric shaped basins for the rainstorms moving up, down and cross the basins with various velocities. The smallest differences of peak runoff of symmetric and nonsymmetric basins are appeared in the case of elongated basin, and the largest differences are shown at the oblong basin for the downstream direction. The identical results are shown for the upstream direction. The greatest peak runoff differences are shown in the delayed type rainstorm and the smallest differences are in the advanced type rainstorm for the crossstream direction. The oblong shaped basin generates the longest peak time and shortest peak time for the elongated shape basin.

  • The influence of $P_2O_5$ on clinker mineral composition and the cement quality was investigated. When the sewage sludge was used as a raw material in place of clay, the presence of $P_2O_5$ in sewage sludge affects the mineral composition and the clinker quality. As the $P_2O_5$ concentration in raw mix increases, the burnability of clinker becomes worse and the alite decomposes into belite and free-CaO, so belite increases with the decrease of alite. The early strength of mortar decreases with the increase of $P_2O_5$ concentration. On the other hand, later-age strength increases with the increase of belite content. The setting time of cement was delayed with the $P_2O_5$ concentration above 0.6 wt%.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of partial solar eclipse on 21 May 2012 in Korea on meteorological variables in Busan. 0800 LST(Local Standard Time) solar radiation was similar or lower than 0700 LST solar radiation, and sunshine duration decreased by 0.2~0.5 hours in Busan and great cities under the influence of the partial solar eclipse. Temperature drop due to the partial solar eclipse was $0.2{\sim}2.0^{\circ}C$, time taken to arrive at maximum temperature after onset of eclipse was 8~62 minutes, and time taken to arrive at minimum temperature after maximum eclipse was -9~17 minutes in Busan. Change of wind speed was negligible as partial solar eclipse occurred in the morning. Soil temperature of 5 cm was minute as well, the increase of soil temperature due to sunset was delayed by more than 1 hour.
