  • Background: The introduction of new living modified (LM) crops may pose a latent threat to the biodiversity of each country. Here, we used sunflowers (Helianthus annuus L.) as a study system to investigate the potential for invasiveness of LM crops under different environmental conditions when released into a natural ecosystem in South Korea. We examined the seed germination, survival, and flowering of sunflowers under competition with wild plants at different sowing dates (March-December) and plot sizes (1 m × 1 m and 2 m × 2 m). Results: The germination rate showed a significant difference according to the sowing date. In addition, several sunflowers survived in plots with a high germination rate, which also led to a higher flowering rate. We found that the smaller the plot, the smaller the area available for inter-species competition, and the higher the number of surviving sunflower plants. The relative dominance and importance value of the species varied significantly between the sowing dates; in particular, sunflowers sown in March could compete with wild plants for longer than those sown on other sowing dates. Conclusions: These observations indicate that the potential for invasiveness of sunflowers differs depending on the environmental conditions and seed density at the time of release.

  • $GA_3$ treatments for seeds of Perilla frutescens var. acuta Kudo were evaluated as a means of improving the percent germination, and the interactions of $GA_3$, mulching, and sowing depth on seedling emergence were investigated in late sowing. Percentage germination of seeds treated with different concentration of $GA_3$ was the most effective in 100 ppm treatment for 24 hours. The germinability according to the seeds soaking time was not significantly different over 12 hours in 100 ppm $GA_3$. At high temperature $(25^{\circ}C\;and\;30^{\circ}C)$, percentage germination was significantly increased in 100 ppm ${GA_3}$ treatment. In late sowing (1th or 15th May), seedling emergence was significantly higher in 100 ppm $GA_3$ treatment than nontreatment, and that was significantly increased when the seeds treated with 100 ppm $GA_3$ were mulched with 10 mm rice hull after molding with 5 mm soil depth.

  • Pod-edible bean or snap bean is a fairly new crop to domestic farmers but the national demand is steadily increasing in recent years along with the development of western food business and change in dietary patterns. At the same time, much efforts are being made to export it to foreign country, mainly to Japan. The amount of seeds introduced from outside is also continuously increasing along with the enlargement of area planted for the crop. Hybridization breeding for the crop has already been started to supply the cheaper and better seeds which will reduce the seed costs and foster the higher income to the farmers. In this experiment, several technologies related with the production of quality seeds are preliminary investigated. Some of the results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Highly significant interaction was recognized between planting dates and no. of pods per plant and no. of branches but no interaction between planting dates and plant height and no. of nodes on main stem. Days to maturity was proportionally reduced to later planting dates. 2. Rate of viviparous pods and seeds was gradually increased in later planting dates but rate of germination was increased in earlier planting dates with lower germination rate in white seed coat grains than in colored seed ones. 3. Seed yield was higher in the earlier planting dates with a great deal of varietal difference. Early to mid April was considered to he the optimum planting dates for snap bean in Kyungbuk area. High correlation was recognized between seed yield and no. of pods per plant, no. of seeds per plant, and 100 seed weight. 4. Days to flowering was three and seven days longer in Cheongsong, high mountainous area than in Kunwi, somewhat prairie lowland. One hundred seed weight was also higher in Cheongsong than in Kunwi. Rate of viviparous grains, pods, and decayed seeds was higher in Cheongsong but, at the same time, the rate of germination and seed yield was also higher in Cheongsong. 5. One hundred seed weight of KLG5007 increased continuously up to 35days after flowering and decreased thereafter but that of KLG50027 increased to 40days after flowering and slowly reduced thereafter. The content of crude oil reached to maximum at 40 days after flowering and reduced thereafter. The rate of germination in Gangnangkong 1 was the highest, 89.3%, at 35 days after flowering and reduced thereafter while that in KLG50027 reached to maximum, 70.7%. at 40days after flowering and reduced thereafter. Thus, the optimum harvesting time for snap bean was considered to be 35~40days after flowering. 6. The snap bean pods at yellow bean stage easily became viviparous ones under saturated moisture conditions for 24 hours at $25{\sim}30^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it is recommended to harvest pods somewhat earlier than yellow-bean stage and let them do post maturing, especially when it is to be rained.

  • Germinated brown rice (GBR) has received great attention due to its enhanced nutritional value. Brown waxy rice was germinated at $30^{\circ}C$ for 10 h, 20 h, or 30 h with 95% humidity. The color, texture, digestibility, and sensory characteristics of waxy rice cake made by GBR were evaluated. Pasting viscosity of rice flour was substantially reduced, whereas ${\gamma}$-amino butyric acid content increased with an increase in germination time. Lightness of rice cake with GBR was lower than that with brown rice, whereas the redness and yellowness of rice cake were higher after germination. For textural properties, the hardness, gumminess, and chewiness of rice cake with GBR were lower than those with brown rice, and decreased hardness was more prominent with an increase in germination time. The in vitro starch digestibility of rice cake was elevated by germination, showing an increase in rapidly digestible starch content and decrease in resistant starch content. In the sensory evaluation, the overall acceptability of rice cake with brown rice and GBR was greater than that with white rice, whereas it was reduced with an increase in germination time.

  • In order to shorten the time of germination and emergence of red pepper seeds of cv. Serona and cv. King were soaked at 20, 25, and 30% PEG solutions for 6 and 12 days and effects of osmotic treatments with PEG were determined. 1. Osmotic treatments with 20 and 25% PEG for 12 days were proven effective in reducing germination time of cv. Serona and cv. King. Final germination percentages were not significantly different among PEG treatments. 2. Osmotic treatment with 25% PEG for 12 days showed effective in reducing the time between sowing and emergence of red pepper and shortened 4 and 5 days for emergence of cv. King and cv. Serona, respectively. 3. It is anticipated that germination and emergence of red pepper can be greatly hastened under unfavorable low temperature condition by osmotic treatment with 20 and 25% PEG for 6 and 12 days.

  • Germination characteristics, seedling emergence, and early seedling growth of iron-coated rice seeds, cultivars Daebo and Samdeokbyeo, under different water depths were compared with those of non-coated seeds (control) and the results evaluated to obtain basic information for establishing stable seedlings in direct water seeding. The total germination percentage of the two seed treatments was similar, but iron-coated seeds had slightly faster germination and shorter mean germination time than non-coated seeds. Water absorption rates of iron-coated seeds were lower than that of non-coated seeds during seed germination. The germination percentage of the two iron-coated rice seed cultivars showed a significant decline of 15-22% after one year of storage under natural conditions. The seedling emergence percentage and uniformity of the two rice cultivars were significantly higher in the iron-coated seeds at 1-13 cm water depths but the percentage of floating seedlings was lower in iron-coated seeds than in non-coated seeds. The iron-coated seeds had a high seedling emergence percentage of 91.3-93.3% at all flooding depths whereas the non-coated seeds had a significantly low seedling emergence percentage of 57.7-71.7% at a water depth of 13 cm. Moreover, the shoot dry weight and seedling health score of iron-coated seeds were significantly higher than those of non-coated seeds, while root dry weights were similar in iron-coated and non-coated seeds, regardless of water depth. These results suggest that iron-coated seeds are more appropriate for stable seedling establishment in direct water seeding than are non-coated seeds.

  • Petri dish and pot experiments were conducted to investigate germination and seedling emergence of Ammannia coccinea as influenced by environmental factors. The best germination of A. coccinea was obtained at $35/30^{\circ}C$ of temperature and 0 bar of osmotic potential, while no germination at temperatures of ${\leq}$ $15^{\circ}C$ and ${\geq}$ $40^{\circ}C$, osmotic potentials of ${\leq}$ -2.0 bar, or dark condition. The best seedling emergence was observed at $35/30^{\circ}C$, at which the first emergence of A. coccinea was observed at 7 days after sowing (DAS) with its maximum emergence reached at 10 DAS. No seedling emergence was observed at $15/10^{\circ}C$ with significant reduction at $40/35^{\circ}C$. Seedling emergence decreased with increasing soil depth, resulting in no seedling emergence at ${\geq}$ 3 cm. The Gompertz model well described the cumulative germination and seedling emergence of A. coccinea with time. Germination influenced by osmotic potential and seedling emergence influenced by soil burial depth were well described by the logistic model. Overall results indicate that A. coccinea is photoblastic and requires temperatures greater than $15^{\circ}C$, osmotic potential greater than -2.0 bar, and soil burial depth shallower than 3 cm for its germination and seedling emergence, which were faster than M. vaginalis but slower than E. crus-galli.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of experimental warming using infrared lamps on seed germination and seedling survival rate of Pinus densiflora and Abies holophylla. The air temperature of warmed plots had been automatically maintained 3 higher than control plots. The percent germinations (%) of the two coniferous species were higher in warmed plots than in control plots, however a significant difference appeared only in A. holophylla. In addition, P. densiflora and A. holophylla showed the shorter mean germination time (days), higher germination rate ($seed{\cdot}day^{-1}$) and germination energy (%) in warmed plots than in control plots. A. holophylla showed a higher seedling mortality rate in the warmed plots than in control plots because of increased air and soil temperatures and decreased soil moisture. However, seedling survival rate of P. densiflora showed no significant difference by experimental warming. In the future, changed air and soil temperatures and soil moisture due to global warming will induce a variety of changes in seed germination and survival rate of tree species in nursery culture. Therefore, it is necessary to establish adaptation strategies that improve techniques in nursery culture against global warming.

  • Steeping and germination conditions were investigated in order to produce barley containing a high ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid (GABA) content, and the changes in GABA and nutritional components before and after germination were also evaluated in this study. Water absorption rates of three barleys increased alongside both steeping time and steeping temperature. The highest GABA contents of the three barleys, 10.4-14.1 mg/100 g, were obtained from the steeping condition of $25^{\circ}C$ for 24 hr. The GABA contents of germinated barleys ranged from 14.3 to 20.9 mg/100 g, increasing by 3.9 to 14.6 times compared with raw barley. The crude lipid, crude ash and total mineral contents were slightly decreased after germination. The major fatty acids of the three barleys before and after germination were linoleic and palmitic acids. ${\beta}$-glucan contents of three barleys were slightly decreased after germination.
