  • This paper deals with the accumulated damage in concrete structures due to the cyclic freeze-thaw as an environmental load. The cyclic ice body nucleation and growth processes in porous systems are affected by the thermo-physical and mass transport properties, and gradients of temperature and chemical potentials. Furthermore, the diffusivity of deicing chemicals shows significantly higher value under cyclic freeze-thaw conditions. Consequently, the disintegration of concrete structures is aggravated at marine environments, higher altitudes, and northern areas. However, the properties of cyclic freeze-thaw with crack growth and diffusion of chloride ion effects are hard to be identified in tests, and there has been no analytic model for the combined degradations. The main objective is to determine the driving force and evaluate the reduced strength and stiffness by freeze-thaw. For the development of computational model of those coupled deterioration, micro-pore structure characterization, pore pressure based on the thermodynamic equilibrium, time and temperature dependent super-cooling with or without deicing salts, nonlinear-fracture constitutive relation for the evaluation of internal damage, and the effect of entrained air pores (EA) has been modeled numerically. As a result, the amount of ice volume with temperature dependent surface tensions, freezing pressure and resulting deformations, and cycle and temperature dependent pore volume has been calculated and compared with available test results. The developed computational program can be combined with DuCOM, which can calculate the early aged strength, heat of hydration, micro-pore volume, shrinkage, transportation of free water in concrete. Therefore, the developed model can be applied to evaluate those various practical degradation cases as well.

  • Casting are widely used nodays as complicated and diversified forming materials due to its superior castability. However the welding of cast iron has not been accompaniced satisfactory resulting in an microstructure change happened in the heat affected zone (HAZ), especially the graphite are formed and shaped consecutively in the area and it has great impact on the crack occuring and growth together with martensite forming in this area. It case of gray cast iron welding, it is required for pre-heat treatment or specific welding consumables to restrain forming the martensite in the HAZ. In this study, by applying the plasma surface overlaid welding. Fe-Mn-Al steel powder has been used for improvement of anti-crackability in the HAZ and much attention has been paid to establish the overlaid welding method for gray cast iron so that optimum welding conditions may prevent the cracking. With our experiments, we have found that to prevent defects which may occur in the HAZ, the overlaid welding technique for gray cast iron has been developed.

  • Portland cement concrete, which has higher strength and stiffness than asphalt concrete, has been widely applied on pavements. However, the brittle fracture characteristic of cement concrete restricts its application in highway pavement construction. Since the polypropylene fiber can improve the fracture toughness of cement concrete, Polypropylene Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (PFRC) is attracting more and more attention in civil engineering. In order to study the effect of polypropylene fiber on the generation and evolution process of the local deformation band in concrete, a series of three-point bending tests were performed using the new technology of the digital speckle correlation method for FRC notched beams with different volumetric contents of polypropylene fiber. The modified Double-K model was utilized for the first time to calculate the stress intensity factors of instability and crack initiation of fiber-reinforced concrete beams. The results indicate that the polypropylene fiber can enhance the fracture toughness. Based on the modified Double-K fracture theory, the maximum fracture energy of concrete with 3.2% fiber (in volume) is 47 times higher than the plain concrete. No effort of fiber content on the strength of the concrete was found. Meanwhile to balance the strength and resistant fracture toughness, concrete with 1.6% fiber is recommended to be applied in pavement construction.

  • In this study, both experimental and analytical study for behavior of the existing composite steel box girder bridges, constructed along with the procedure of continuous placing slab, are conducted to establish the validity of the proposed model. The layer approach is adopted to determine the equilibrium condition in a section to consider the different material properties and concrete cracking across the sectional depth, and the beam element stiffness is constructed on the basis of the assumed displacement field formulation and the 3-points Gaussian Integration. In addition, the effects of creep and shrinkage of concrete for time-dependent behavior of the bridge are taken into consideration. Finally, both analytical and experimental results are compared.

  • Rhizopus soft rot caused by Rhizopus stolonifer occurred on pears (Pyrus serotina) in the Jinju City Agricultural Products Wholesale Market in Korea from 2004 to 2005. The infection usually started from wounds due to cracking at harvest time. The lesions started as water-soaked, rapidly softened, then gradually expanded. The mycelia grew vigorously on the surface of the fruits and formed stolons. Colonies on potato dextrose agar at $25^{\circ}C$ were white cottony to brownish black. Sporangia were globose, black and $90{\sim}120\;{\mu}m$ in size. Sporangiophores were light brown and $480{\sim}2600{\times}12{\sim}18\;{mu}m$ in size. Sporangiospores were globose to oval, brownish, streaked, and $8{\sim}14{\times}6{\sim}10\;{\mu}m$ in size. Columella were light brownish gray, hemispherical and $70{\sim}80\;{\mu}m$ in size. On the basis of these symptoms, mycological characteristics and pathogenicity tests on host plants, the fungus was identified as Rhizopus stolonifer (Ehrenb.) Vuill. This is the first report of rhizopus soft rot on pear (P. serotina) caused by R. stolonifer in Korea.

  • Primary water stress corrosion cracking of steam generator tubings occur on many tubes in pressurized water reactors(PWRs), and they are repaired using sleeves or plugs. In order to develop proper repair criteria, it is necessary to know the leak behavior of the tubes, which have stress corrosion cracks. Crack development tests were carried out on the tubes at room temperature, and leak rate and burst pressure were measured on the degraded tubes at room temperature and a high temperature. No leakage was detected on the tubes where 100 % through wall crack developed, at 1560 psi, which is an operating pressure difference of pressurized water reactors(PWRs). In some tests, leak rates of the tubes increased with time at a constant internal water pressure. A test tube showed a very small amount of leakage at 2700 psi in a high temperature pressure test at $282^{\circ}C$, but it disappeared after the pressure increased slightly. Even cracks are 100 % through wall, they need to open in order to reach a certain amount of leak rate at the operating pressure difference.

  • In this study, we conducted a shake table test to verify the seismic performance of the paneling system with steel truss composed of bolt connections. The control group was set to the traditional paneling system with steel truss connected by spot welding method. Test results showed that the bolted connection type paneling system has excellent deformation capacity without cracking or brittle fracture of the steel truss connection parts compared to the welding type paneling system. Furthermore, in the bolted connection type, slight damage occurred at the time of occurrence of the same story drift angle as compared with the existing method, it is considered that it has excellent seismic performance. In compliance with the performance-based design recommended for the current code (ASCE 41-13) on non-structural components, it is judged that in the case of the bolted connection type paneling system, it can be applied to all risk category structures without restriction. However, in the case of traditional paneling system with spot welding method, it is considered that it can be applied limitedly.

  • This paper deals with the development of simplified methods to predict the creep deformation of reinforced concrete beams. The layer approach based on a degenerate kernel of compliance function in form of Dirichlet series is mentioned and a simplified analytical method derived from the equilibrium equations and compatibility conditions is proposed to overcome the sophisticated calculation procedures in the classical creep analysis. Correlation studies between analytical and experimental results and design codes are conducted with the objective to establish the validity of the proposed methods. Besides, various parameter studies are conducted with the objective to identify the effects of cracking, steel ratio and sectional shape in the creep deformation and the obtained results are discussed.

  • Alpha-phase alumina TGO(Thermally Grown Oxide) forms on the interface between zirconia top coat and bond coat of thermal barrier coating system for superalloys during exposure to high temperature over $1000^{\circ}C$. It is known to provide a good protection against hot corrosion and to cause surface failure such as rumpling and cracking due to difference in thermal expansion coefficient from the substrate metal and the lateral growth. Consequently, mechanical properties of the alumina TGO at the high temperature are the key parameters determining the integrity of TBC system. In this work, by using Fecralloy foils as the alumina forming substrate, creep tests and tensile tests have been performed with various TGO thicknesses$(h=0{\sim}4{\mu}m)$ and yttrium contents(0, 200ppm) at $1200^{\circ}C$. Displacement-time curves and load-displacement curves for each TGO thickness(h=1,2,..) were measured from the creep and tensile tests, respectively, and compared with the curves without TGO thickness(h=0). As the result, the intrinsic tensile and creep properties of TGO itself were determined.

  • Invisible passenger airbag door system of hard panel types must be designed with a weakened area such that the side airbag will deploy through the instrument panel as like intended manner, with no flying debris at any required operating temperature. At the same time, there must be no cracking or sharp edges in the head impact test. If the advanced airbag with the big difference between high and low deployment pressure ranges are applied to hard panel types of invisible passenger airbag (IPAB) door system, it becomes more difficult to optimize the tearseam strength for satisfying deployment and head impact performance simultaneously. It was introduced the 'Operating Window' idea from quality engineering to design the hard panel types of IPAB door system applied to the advanced airbag for optimal deployment and head impact performance. Zigzab airbag folding and 'n' type PAB mounting bracket were selected.
