  • Human activity recognition (HAR) has become effective as a computer vision tool for video surveillance systems. In this paper, a novel biometric system that can detect human activities in 3D space is proposed. In order to implement HAR, joint angles obtained using an RGB-depth sensor are used as features. Because HAR is operated in the time domain, angle information is stored using the sliding kernel method. Haar-wavelet transform (HWT) is applied to preserve the information of the features before reducing the data dimension. Dimension reduction using an averaging algorithm is also applied to decrease the computational cost, which provides faster performance while maintaining high accuracy. Before the classification, a proposed thresholding method with inverse HWT is conducted to extract the final feature set. Finally, the K-nearest neighbor (k-NN) algorithm is used to recognize the activity with respect to the given data. The method compares favorably with the results using other machine learning algorithms.

  • Just as the vibration modes of a beam are dependent on its end constraints or boundary conditions. Vibration modes of a tire are dependent on its patch and spindle constraints. This dependence is key to understanding the dynamic properties of a tire and is apparent in various analytical and experimental investigations in the literature. One of the main task in a modal analysis is the measurement of the Frequency Response Function (FRFs). Because all the subsequent analysis is based on these FRFs, their quality is critically important in obtaining accurate modal parameter estimates. In rotating systems, FRFs are frequently contaminated by harmonic peaks related to such factors as imbalance, misalignment. This harmonic peaks appear in the FRFs as sharp spikes, which can be erroneously treated in modal curve-fitting procedures as structural modes. The harmonic peaks removal method is demonstrated by application to modal analysis on rotating tires. The results show substantial improvement in FRF quality.

  • To measure water levels from remote cites using a narrowband channel, this paper developed a difference image based JPEG communication scheme and a water level measurement scheme using the sparsely sampled images in time domain. In the slave system located in the field, the images are compressed using JPEG after changed to difference images, among which in a period of data collection those showing larger changes are sampled and transmitted. To measure the water level from the images received in the master system which may contain noises caused by various sources, the averaging scheme and Gaussian filter are used to reduce the noise effects and the Y axis profile of an edge image is used to read the water level. Considering the wild condition of the field, a simplified camera calibration scheme is also introduced. The implemented slave system was installed at a river and its performance has been tested with the data collected for a month.

  • In IEEE 802.11p-based wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE) communication systems, channel estimation (CE) is one of the important issues to provide stable communication service. It is hard to apply conventional CE schemes based on data pilot to real systems, because error propagation occurs in high mobility and modulation order environments, resulting in degrading the CE performance. In this paper, we propose one data pilot using multiple receive antennas (ODPM) CE scheme based on the weighted sum using update matrix (WSUM) with time-domain averaging (TDA) to overcome this problem. Within the process of WSUM-TDA in the proposed scheme, the maximum ratio combining (MRC) technique is applied so as to create more accurate one data pilot. Moreover, a new reliability test criterion is proposed as the fashion of utilizing MRC, which makes it possible to apply selective TDA that guarantees performance improvement. In simulation results, the packet error rate (PER) performance of the proposed ODPM is compared with that of conventional CE methods and its superiority is demonstrated.

  • In this study, we measured the natural frequencies of aluminum honeycomb sandwich beams using digital image correlation technique. The vibration images were captured using two high speed digital cameras and the images were converted to displacements by the digital image correlation technique. Displacement data in time domain were tranformed to frequency domain data by fast Fourier transform software. To reduce noise invoked by random exitation, a spectrum averaging technique and Savitsky-Golay digital filter were adopted. A conventional vibration measurement using an accelerometer and a finite element analysis were performed to compare the results by high speed digital camera measurement method. In conclusion, new method using high speed digital cameras and digital image correlation technique can measure the vibration of beam structures and can be applied to bio-structures where sensors cannot be attached.

  • In this paper, we propose an iterative self-interference (SI) channel estimation method for in-band full-duplex cellular systems that employ orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) on downlink (DL) and single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) on uplink (UL), as in Long Term Evolution (LTE) systems. The proposed method first acquires coarse estimates of SI channels using DL signals and UL pilots, which are known to the base stations, and then refines the estimates by consecutively exploiting averaging in the frequency domain and channel truncation in the time domain. In addition, the method enhances the estimates further by iteratively executing this estimation procedure, and does not require any radio resources dedicated to SI channel estimation. Simulation results demonstrate that by significantly improving the SI channel estimation performance without requiring exact knowledge of the SI channel length, the proposed method achieves UL channel estimation performance and signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) performance very close to those in perfect SI cancellation.

  • Electro-optical sigma-delta modulators are the core module of digital receiver to digitize wideband radio-frequency signals directly at an antenna. Electro-optical sigma-delta modulators use a pulsed laser to oversample an input radio-frequency signals at two Mach-Zehnder Interferometer(MZI) and shape the quantization noise using a fiber-lattice accumulator. Decimation filtering is applied to the quantizer output to construct the input signal with high resolution. The jitter affects greatly on reconstructing the original input signal of modulator. This paper analyzes the performance of first order single bit electro-optical sigma-delta modulator in the time domain and the frequency domain. The performance of modulator is analyzed by using asynchronous spectral averaging of the reconstructed signal's spectrum in the frequency domain. The reference value of time jitter is presented by analyzing the performance of jitter effects. This kind of jitter value can be used as a reference value on the design of modulators.

  • The time domain methods of estimating the attenuation coefficient are generally based on the analysis of statisical properties of the reflected echoes form an attenuating medium. Hence, it is often required to have a large number of data samples in order to obtain a statistically stable estimation result. In the attenuation estimation problem, this means that many different speckle patterns are required in the spatial resolution volume of an attenLlation image. In this paper, by using the fact that the speckle pattern Is sensitive to the point spread function of the ultrasound beam, we suggest a method to generate the statiscally uncorrelated or slightly correlated data samples in a given region by rotating a linear transducer and carrying out lateral scans for all rotating angles. This technique is applied to the entropy method for attenuation estimation proposed recently by the authors where the performance is verified by experiments using a tissue equivalent phantom.

  • An analysis was conducted to predict the hydraulic performance of a reactor coolant pump (RCP) of SMART at the off-design as well as design points. In order to reduce the analysis time efficiently, a single passage containing an impeller and a diffuser was considered as the computational domain. A stage scheme was used to perform a circumferential averaging of the flux on the impeller-diffuser interface. The pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the pump was determined and was used to compute the head, efficiency, and break horse power (BHP) of a scaled-down model under conditions of steady-state incompressible flow. The predicted curves of the hydraulic performance of an RCP were similar to the typical characteristic curves of a conventional mixed-flow pump. The complex internal fluid flow of a pump, including the internal recirculation loss due to reverse flow, was observed at a low flow rate.

  • In this paper, 2-DOF vehicle suspension system with a semiactive on-off damper was studied for improving the ride comfort. It is known that a nonlinear hydraulic damper, which generates force proportional to the square of the relative velocity, can describe the actual fluid resisting type damper more properly than the traditional viscous damping model. On the other hand, hydraulic damper adoption in analysis makes the system nonlinear and causes difficulties to get the system response. In this work, time domain direct integration method was used to calculate system displacement and acceleration. first of all, the response of the suspension system experiencing a given road profile was optimized by Lagrangian multiplier method within the range of given damping coefficients. The appropriate on-loaf damping values were obtained by averaging the already calculated optimum damping coefficients from Lagrangian techniques. The criterion to control the on-off mechanism was determined by examining the suspension efficiency. It was found that the best out of practically applicable criteria is following the sign (positive and negative) of the multiplication of relative displacement and velocity. Judging from the theoretical calculations, it was proved that the semiactive on-off damper can increase suspension efficiency as much as 8-11% in object function.
