This study was conducted in three sites, Si-Hwa Lake, Dongman and Seoman island and Janguyeop island, from march, 1999 to september, 2002. The behaviors of pre-breeding season, territorial behaviors, reproductive ecology, foraging sites and behaviors, and the competition of reproduction and foods between intraspecific or interspecific of Eurasian Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) were observed in each studying sites. The breeding of Eurasian Oystercatcher started on the middle of April in Si-Hwa Lake and on the middle of May in Dongman and Seoman island and Janguyeop island. For intension of pair bond on pre-breeding season, Eurasian Oystercatcher foraged with pair and behaved male-female chasing flight behavior. The pair foraged with male and female before copulation. If other pairs and individuals approached in feeding site of pair, this pair attacked them with piping calling and intruder chasing flight. If continuos serial behaviors were not observed, the discrimination of male-female chasing flight and intruder chasing flight was difficult. Territorial behaviors classified four types; butterfly flight, calling behavior, chasing behavior, fight behavior. The important foraging sites in Si-Hwa Lake are the land place in Daeboo island, tidal flat of Bangameori, tidal flat a front of a stationary net for catching fishes and tidal flat a front of a view station for bird watching. Eurasian Oystercatcher foraged at tidal flat on low water of the tide and foraged at feeding sites near island on flood tide in Dongman and Seoman island. Eurasian Oystercater in Janguyeop island usually foraged feeding sites near island, because water level was not different between low water of the tide and flood tide. Eurasian Oystercatcher competed on foods of intraspecific and interspecific. They chased for taking foods by force in feeding sites and drove out intruders in feeding sites. The foods interspecific competition happened with Black-tailed Gull (Larus crassirostris). Eurasian Oystercatcher was robbed of foods and attacked by Black-tailed Gull. The individual of food competition with Black-tailed Gull was low foods intake rate comparison with other feeding sites and this individual flied out other feeding sites.

The countries are trying to expand the sea limit such as the territorial sea, fishing zone or the exclusive economic zone as far as the Law of the Sea permit to do for the benefit of their national interest. Especially, they are eager to claim the base point where it locates far from the coastline even if it is uninhabited island or reef under the sea. The baseline has been claimed to maximize the territorial sea. Another way to expand the sea limit is to lower the vertical datum to change the land limit. China claimed Dongdo which is located about 79 miles far from the coast as the base point. Japan also claimed many uninhabited island or the reef which is located very far from the coast such as Okino Dorishima. As Korea is the party who negotiate the maritime limit with Japan and China, we should be keen and sensitive on the issues claimed by neighboring countries in terms of base point and the baseline. This paper is to review the characteristics of the base points or baselines of neighboring countries and to suggest the views how to maintain and to relocate our base points. As western coast of Korean peninsula is one of the largest tide fluctuation zone in the world, with long tidal record to prove the vertical datum adjustment, Korea can find the way to lower the vertical datum especially in Yellow Sea. So, major and critical tidal station has to be set up along the western coast to verify tide fluctuation record which can be met with international standard.

A sedimentation analysis has been attempted to figure out sedimentation environment due to construction of coastal jetties, such as fish harbor dike, flow guided dike and jetty in shallow Kusipo area, in which tidal range marks up to 6.6 meters in spring tide. As an initial approach of understanding field measurement were done on several stations along reference lines with total station and photo analysis taken by remote controlled small air craft far one and half years. Also numerical tests were done by 2-D ADCIRC model considering dry-wet treatment to evaluate flow and bottom shear stress variations. According to direct measurement, deposition seems to be dominant on Kusipo beach. Model results show bottom shear stress lessens to $0.10{\sim}0.15\;N/m^2$ on most shadow zone of jetties and the inner zone is suffering sedimentation as a result of dike construction. However this is the first approach with limited analysis, thus it should be dealt further considering physical characteristics of bottom sediments in a complete sediment model on upcoming study.
This is the second of two papers on the 3D numerical modeling of nearshore hydro- and morphodynamics. In Part I, the focus was on surf and swash zone hydrodynamics in the cross-shore and longshore directions. Here, we consider nearshore processes with an emphasis on the effects of oceanic forcing and beach characteristics on sediment transport in the cross- and longshore directions, as well as on foreshore bathymetry changes. The Delft3D and XBeach models were used with four turbulence closures (viz., ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$, ${\kappa}-L$, ATM and H-LES) to solve the 3D Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible flow as well as the beach morphology. The sediment transport module simulates both bed load and suspended load transport of non-cohesive sediments. Twenty sets of numerical experiments combining nine control parameters under a range of bed characteristics and incident wave and tidal conditions were simulated. For each case, the general morphological response in shore-normal and shore-parallel directions was presented. Numerical results showed that the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ and H-LES closure models yield similar results that are in better agreement with existing morphodynamic observations than the results of the other turbulence models. The simulations showed that wave forcing drives a sediment circulation pattern that results in bar and berm formation. However, together with wave forcing, tides modulate the predicted nearshore sediment dynamics. The combination of tides and wave action has a notable effect on longshore suspended sediment transport fluxes, relative to wave action alone. The model's ability to predict sediment transport under propagation of obliquely incident wave conditions underscores its potential for understanding the evolution of beach morphology at field scale. For example, the results of the model confirmed that the wave characteristics have a considerable effect on the cumulative erosion/deposition, cross-shore distribution of longshore sediment transport and transport rate across and along the beach face. In addition, for the same type of oceanic forcing, the beach morphology exhibits different erosive characteristics depending on grain size (e.g., foreshore profile evolution is erosive or accretive on fine or coarse sand beaches, respectively). Decreasing wave height increases the proportion of onshore to offshore fluxes, almost reaching a neutral net balance. The sediment movement increases with wave height, which is the dominant factor controlling the beach face shape.

Field observations have been conducted to investigate the physical environment around oyster farms in Gamak Bay. Tidal waves near the two channels at the northeast and south of the bay had almost the same amplitudes and phases. Water temperature responded sensibly to the tides, rising at high water and falling at low water, except for the northwest region. The currents more regularly varied in accordance with a tidal period as long as they are at the faster-flowing region. A considerable flow has been found near the seabed of the northwest of the bay, normally known to be a stagnant area, and also the flow was opposite to the surface flow. Average moving speeds and directions of the flow at each station coincided well with patterns of the residual currents computed by Lee ef al. [2004], except for the northwest region. The discrepancy for the northwest region is not clear but it may have resulted from the facts that the computed flow pattern represents only the case of spring tide and in addition, a northwesterly wind prevailed all the observation time.
To alleviate the harmful effects from contamination, the Sihwa Lake waters have been regularly fluxed out into the ocean to mix and circulate with the oceanic waters, and then allowed to flow back into the lake. In the present study, eco-environmental impacts by the outflowing contaminated lake waters to the benthic communities of the coastal zones along Kyonggi Bay were examined at three separate areas. A total of 22 groups of meiobenthic animals were commonly found in the subtidal zones of the Bay. All groups of the meiobenthic animals on the 1st and 7th days after the outflow were remarkably reduced in numbers from the selected areas examined, as compared to those observed one day before the outflow. It was also found that the community structure of meiobenthos was changed drastically: At the station near the water gate, for example, where the immediate outflow of the lake water was encountered, the benthic harpacticoids, the group observed to be one of the predominant groups before the outflow, were found to have disappeared completely. For an area that was relatively far away from the water gate, the reduction rate of meiobenthos after the outflow events was slower and more gradual than the nearer sites. An area that is the farthest from the water gate, no reduction in any of the meiobenthos group was observed. The ratio between nematodes/copepods (N/C) was remarkably changed by the outflows at the station near the water gate: One day before the outflow, the ratio was 0.7 while the ratio was 19.0 at the station near the water gate. In contrast, at the stations relatively far from the water gate, the ratio decreased one day after the outflow event, but increasing trends were observed one week later. In the tidal flats, Station 1 exhibited the common observed regional values of the ratio whereas Station 2 showed a very high ratio of 191.3. The results suggested that the contaminated lake water outflows directly effect meiobenthos in a relatively short time period and thus the meiobenthos may be a good indicator animal group for examining the effect of pollution. This study was carried out by investigating the changes of physico-chemical and mechanical properties of Gwanghwal and Poseung series in order to obtain basic information on the soil improvement and management. 1. In Gwanghwal series, the content of salt in soil and ground water before rice transplanting at the 21st year after reclamation were 0.29 and 1.02 percent respectively, and the safty cultivation of paddy rice was possible after 33 years of reclamation in both soil series. 2. Clay contents. atterberg limits and clay activity according to the age of reclaimation showed negative correlation. but sand content and N-value were positive in them. 3. Cone index was lower than $3kg/cm^2$ for the first 5 years after reclaimation in both soil series, and the formation of hard pan were 33rd and 49th year after reclamation in Gwanghwal and Poseung series respectively, and its thickness was more in Poseung than in Gwanghwal series. 4. Shearing resistance decreased with the age of reclaimation in both soil series. and friction resistance increased in Gwanghwal than Poseung siries. 4. Shearig resistance decreased with the age of reclaimation in both soil series, and friction resistance increased in Gwanghwal than Poseung series. 5. Soil pH. available, $SiO_2$, $Mg^2$, $K^+$, $Na^+$ and C. E. C showed negative correlation. with the year cultivated paddy rice. but O. M. ava ilable $P_2O_5Ca^{2+}$ and T-N had positive one in both soil series. Contents of O. M and $Ca^{2+}$ and T-N had positive one in both soil series. Contents of O. M and $Ca^{2+}$ were high in Gwanghwal, but C. E. C. was in Poseung series.

This study was performed to know about the characteristics of geochemicals of sampling sites in Suncheon bay. Salinity and parameters of water pollution as COD, DIN and DIP showed typical character of an estuary with its values higher at the end of estuary and gradually lowering at the up stream. The value of Excess DIN showed positive so the phosphorus appeared in a role as limiting nutrient. As quoted results of correlation analysis of SPSS and PCA, salinity was revealed as a main factor of control for water qualities at sampling sites in Suncheon bay. The Mz of wet lands and intertidal zone in Sun-cheon bay showed a variation of 6.74 to $8.52{\phi}$ and the sorting also to appeared poorly sorted to very poorly sorted. The fractional composition of phosphorus in phosphorus of sediments were high and appeared orderly as redisual-P> NAI-P> apatite-P> absorbed-P. The labile-Phosphorus showed high concentration then the other station. It means that phosphorus of these stations can easily move from the deposit to the water column than another station.
Kongsfjorden near Korean Arctic Station, Dasan, is a glacial fjord in the Svalbard archipelago, Arctic that is influenced by both Atlantic and Arctic water masses. During the Arctic field season August 2002, surface temperature, salinity, density, and phytoplankton biomass (chi a) was measured in Kongsfjorden. A total of 15 surface samples were collected for the phytoplankton related measurements. Chl a values ranged from 0.08 to 1.4mg chi a $m^{-3}$ (mean of 0.53mg chl a $m^{-3}$) in the overall surface stations. The highest values of the chi a concentrations (> 1.0mg chi a $m^{-3}$) were found near glacier in the northeastern part of Kongsfjorden. Nanoplanktonic (< $20{\mu}m$) phytoflagellates were important contributors for the increase of the chi a. The nano-sized phytoflagellates accounted for more than 90% of the total chi a biomass in the study area. Surface temperatures and salinities ranged from 2.5 to $7.18^{\circ}C$ (mean of $4.65^{\circ}C$) and from 22.55 to 32.97 psu (mean of 30.16 psu), respectively. The physical factors were not highly correlated with phytoplankton distribution. The character of surface water due to down-fjord wind was highly similar to phytoplankton distribution. Drifting ice, freshwater, and semdiment inputs from large tidal glaciers located in the inner part of Konsfjorden create steep physico- and biogeochemical environmental gradients along the length of this ford. The glacial inputs cause reduced biodiversity biomass and productivity in the pelagic community in the inner fjord. Primary production of benthic and pelagic microalgae is reduced due to the limited light levels in the turbid and mixed inner waters. The magnitude of glacial effects diminishes towards the outer fjord. Kongsfjorden is an important feeding ground fer marine mammals and seabirds. Especially, seabirds play the largest energy intake and also export nutrients for primary production of the marine microalgae. Kongsfjorden has received a lot of research attention as a site for exploring the impacts of climate changes. Dasan Station in Kongsfjorden will be an important Arctic site for monitoring and detecting future environmental changes.
In order to study the community structure and distribution pattern of macrobenthos in the subtidal area of Shia Sea between Haenam peninsula and Shinan-Jindo area at southwest coast of Korea, duplicate sediment samples were taken seasonally by van Veen grab (surface area, $0.1m^2$) from 49 stations between November 2001 and August 2002. The surface sediment facies were muddy sandy gravel near Mokpo-Gu channel, gravel in the Myoungrang channel with high tidal currents, and sandy muddy in the southern Uido area. Ignition loss in the sediment ranged from 0.5 to 1.5% with a mean of 0.6%. A total of 271 taxa were collected with a mean density of $166ind.\;m^{-2}$ and a mean biomass of $29.2g\;m^{-2}$. Polychaetes were dominant faunal group in terms of species richness and abundance, accounting for 34% and 40% of total species number and abundance, respectively. Molluscs accounted for 44% of biomass. Bio-Env analysis revealed that sediment composition and ignition loss affected the spatial distribution of subtidal macrobenthic community in the study area. Major dominant species were Photis longicaudata, Septifer keenae, Maldane cristata, Lumbrineris longifolia, Heteromastus filiformis and Coptothyris grayi. Based on cluster analysis, four station groups were classified. They were associated with sediment types. Bivalve, Striarca symmetrica, polychaetes, Glycera chirori, Heteromastus filiformis and decapod Latreutes planirostris were major contributing fauna in station group A, B, C, and D, respectively. These results suggest that macrobenthic community of the Shia Sea is normally influenced by sediment type and related ignition loss.
