The effect of wind on the circulation in Kamak Bay in the southern sea of Korea was examined using a numerical shallow water model. The experiments were primarily focused on how the effect of wind influence the tidal residual current. According to wind directions, the residual currents were changed; the westerly wind created a strong anti-clockwise eddy in the northwestern area of the bay where the flow field is usually very weak; the easterly wind strengthened the flow field in the central area of the bay; the patterns of flow fields to the north and south winds were almost the same as one without the wind, although the flow field became slightly stronger, The model flirty reproduced features in the observed current field at Pyongsa.
One of the most important factors that cause eutrophication is nutrient materials containing nitrogen and phosphorus which stem from excreation of terrestial sources and release from sediment. Therefore, to improve water quality, the reduction of these nutrients loads should be indispensible. At this study, the three-dimensional numerical hydrodynamic and ecosystem model, which was developed by Institute for Resources and Environment of Japan, were applied to analyze the processes affecting the eutrophication. The residual currents, which were obtained by integrating the simulated tidal currents over 1 tidal cycle, showed the presence of a typical counterclockwise eddies between Gyewha and Garyuk island. Density driven currents were generated westward at surface and eastward at the bottom in Saemankeum area where the fresh waters are flowing into, The ecosystem model was calibrated with the data surveyed in the field of the study area in annual average. The simulated results were fairly good coincided with the observed values within relative error of $30\%$. The simulations of DIN and DIP concentrations were performed using ecosystem model under the conditions of $40\~100\%$ pollution load reductions from pollution sources. In study area, concentration of DIN and DIP were reduced to $59\%$ and $28\%$ in case of the $80\%$ reduction of the input loads from fresh water respectively. But pollution loads from sediment had hardly affected DIN and DIP concentration, The $95\%$ input load abatement is necessary to meet the DIN and DIP concentration of second grade of ocean water quality criteria.
The eco-hydrodynamic model was used to estimate the environmental capacity in Gamak Bay. It is composed of the three-dimensional hydrodynamic model for the simulation of water flow and ecosystem model for the simulation of phytoplankton. As the results of three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation, the computed tidal currents are toward the inner part of bay through Yeosu Harbor and the southern mouth of the bay during the flood tide, and being in the opposite direction during the ebb tide. The computed residual currents were dominated southward flow at Yeosu Harbor and sea flow at mouth of bay, The comparison between the simulated and observed tidal ellipses at three station showed fairly good agreement. The distributions of COD in the Gamak bay were simulated and reproduced by an ecosystem model. The simulated results of COD were fairly good coincided with the observed values within relative error of 1.93%, correlation coefficient(r) of 0.88. In order to estimate the environmental capacity in Gamak bay, the simulations were performed by controlling quantitatively the pollution loads with an ecosystem model. In case the pollution loads including streams become 10 times as high as the present loads, the results showed the concentration of COD to be $1.33{\sim}4.74mg/{\ell}(mean\;2.28mg/{\ell})$, which is the third class criterion of Korean standards for marine water quality In case the pollution loads including streams become 30 times as high as the present loads, the results showed the concentration of COD to be $1.38{\sim}7.87mg/{\ell}(mean\;2.97mg/{\ell})$, which is the third class criterion of Korean standards for marine water quality. In case the pollution loads including streams become 50 times as high as the present loads, the results showed the concentration of COD to be $1.44{\sim}9.80mg/{\ell}(mean\;3.56mg/{\ell})$, which is the third class criterion of Korean standards for marine water quality.
Circulations in Deukryang Bay are investigated using a numerical shallow water model. In the flow fields observed at four stations, north-south velocity components are dominant. In the model, the circulation forced by $M_2$-tide basically corresponded well to the observations. The model shows the strong currents in the mouth and the eastern part in the bay with about 60 cm/s and 50 cm/s, respectively. The model also shows the eddies in the tidal residual currents. To investigate the mechanism of eddy formation some numerical experiments are carried out. The results show that inertial and topographic effects play an important role in the eddy formation.
The geostrophic current component is estimated from the sea surface velocity observed by the long-range High-Frequency Ocean Radar (HF radar) system in the upstream of the Kuroshio, by comparing with geostrophic velocity determined from along-track T/P and Jason-1 altimetry data. However, the sea surface velocity of the HF radar (HF velocity) contains not only the geostrophic current but also the ageostrophic current such as tidal current and wind-driven Ekman current. Tidal current component is first extracted by the harmonic analysis of the time series of the HF velocity. Then, the Ekman current is further estimated from daily wind data of IFREMER by applying the least-square method to the residual difference between the HF velocity and the altimetry geostrophic velocity. As a result, the Ekman current in the HF velocity is estimated as 1.32 % of the wind speed and as rotated 45$^{\circ}$ clockwise to the wind direction. These parameters are found almost common in the Kuroshio area and in the Open Ocean. After these corrections, the geostrophic velocity component in the HF velocity agrees well with the altimetry geostrophic velocity.

A studies on the pattern of sea water circulation was carried out by using drogue experiments, tidal current measurement and hydrographic data in Kamak Bay which has two channels. At the flood, the water inflowed from the northern narrow channel flows mostly to the southward then the westward because Daekyung-island located at the flow path, at the same time the water from the southern channel of bay directed strongly to the north with a spine centered at around Gunnaeri. And these waters converged at the area between eng-Island and Deakyung-Island in the bigining of the flow, and placed at less southern part than the area at the late. The water of the north west inner bay having concave bottom topography inflows to Najin inlet with a spin of anti-clockwise. At the ebb, those waters in the bay turn back to two channels respectively, but most of waters directed to the southern channel of the bay. The directions of residual current of two channels are the southward mainly, and the current of inner area are influenced by the prevailing wind. The north-west inner bay which has the weak tidal current less than 10 cm/sec shows a similar upwelling by off-shore wind in winter, and the stratification in summer, respectively.

Effects of nonlinear terms on the generation of M$_2$ tide residual elevation and M$_4$ tide in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea are investigated using a depth-integrated two-dimensional nonlinear M$_2$tidal model. The model domain (117$^{\circ}$E-130$^{\circ}$E, 24$^{\circ}$N-41$^{\circ}$N) covers the whole region of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea with grid resolution of 1/6$^{\circ}$ in longitude and 1/8$^{\circ}$in latitude. A radiational boundary condition is used along the open boundaries. Calculations show that advection terms yield negative residual elevation, while shallow-water terms in continuity equation yield positive residual elevation. The contribution of both advection terms and shallow-water terms to tile generation of the M$_4$ constituent is more than 90 percents, but that of quadratic bottom friction terms to the M$_4$ constituent is comparatively small.
Four kinds of soil conditioners, such as red earth, clayey tidal deposit, silty tidal deposit and tertiary deposit were evaluated for the rice growth and for the effectiveness of soil improvement in sandy paddy soil (Gangseo series) whose percolation and nutrient leaching are usually severe. Experiment was conducted at the farmer's field in Hackpo Ri, Bugog Myeon, Changyeong Gun, Gyeong Nam Province for two years (1980-1981) with using two rice varieties, Milyang 42 for 1980 and cheongcheongbyeo for 1981. For both experimental years, the grain yields were increased on the plots that were treated with soil conditioners compared with nontreated plot. The increase in grain yield was particularly high on the plots treated with clayey tidal deposit and teritary deposit. The dry weight of the plant and the uptake amount of inorganic ingredient tended to increase on the plots of clayey tidal deposit and tertiary deposit during whole rice growing season because of the residual effect of soil conditioners in the second experimental year. Cation exchange capacity, available silicate, exchangeable potassium and active iron was increased by the treatment with the soil conditoners. Especially cation exchange capacity was highest in the tertiary deposit treatment plot. Aggregation content and plastic index were increased for the all treatment plots with soil conditioner, however, hydraulic conductivity was conspicuously decreased by the tertiary deposit and clayey tidal deposit treatments.

A vertically-averaged, two-dimensional version of the Princeton Ocean Model has been applied to the South Sea to simulate the circulation driven by tides and inflows/outflows across open boundaries. To incorporate both forcing properly, a two-step modeling approach is adopted, in which the tidal circulation is first simulated by specifying the tides along the open boundaries, and then both the calculated tidal currents and the observed steady mean currents are prescribed across the open boundaries. Model results show that the steady, subtidal circulation of the South Sea is different from the residual circulation due to tidal rectification, and subtidal currents become locally as strong as tidal currents. The Cheju Current entering the model domain across the Cheju Strait flows eastward in general while shifting onshore or offshore areas following local isobaths. The Tsushima Current entering across the southern boundary reaches farther to the north in the eastern vicinity of Cheju-Do as compared to that entering across other parts of the southern boundary. The Tsushima Current turns to the east, merges with the Cheju Current, and both the Cheju and Tsushima Current exit to the East Sea through the western channel of the Korea Strait. An intensification of the outflow occurs over the deep trough adjacent to the Tsushima Island, which appears to be due to the formation of the frictional boundary layer in order to remove excess positive relative vorticity generated by an increase in the layer thickness. The circulation driven by both the tidal and inflows/outflows is different from that driven by each forcing separately in coastal areas, which implies that both forcings should be considered simultaneously in the simulation of more realistic coastal circulation.

The objective of this paper is to propose a methodology for surface sediments classification in tidal flats that can combine ground survey data with high-resolution remote sensing data by multivariate kriging. Unlike conventional methodologies that have classified remote sensing data by using pre-classified sediment components, a new classification methodology presented in this paper first generates sediment component fraction maps and then classifies the sediments on a final stage. For generating sediment component fractions, regression kriging, as one of multivariate kriging algorithms, is applied to integrate ground survey data and remote sensing data. First, trend components of sand, silt, and clay are derived through regression analysis of ground survey data and spectral information from remote sensing data. Then, residuals at sample locations are computed and interpolated to generate residual components in the study area. Finally, the sediment component fractions are computed by adding the residuals to the trend components and are classified on a final stage. A case study at the Baramarae tidal flats with KOMPSAT-2 imagery is carried out to evaluate the classification capability of the proposed classification methodology. Through the case study, the proposed methodology showed the best classification accuracy, compared with the conventional classification methodologies. Especially, much improvement of classification accuracy for fine-grained sediments were also obtained. Therefore, it is expected that the presented classification methodology would be an effective one for surface sediments classification in tidal flats.
