The present study was undertaken to confirm whether melittin, a major constituent of whole bee venom (WBV), had the ability to produce the same nociceptive responses as those induced by WBV. In the behavioral experiment, changes in mechanical threshold, flinching behaviors and paw thickness (edema) were measured after intraplantar (i.pl.) injection of WBV (0.1 mg & 0.3 mg/paw) and melittin (0.05 mg & 0.15 mg/paw), and intrathecal (i.t.) injection of melittin $(6{\mu}g)$. Also studied were the effects of i.p. (2 mg & 4 mg/kg), i.t. $(0.2{\mu}g\;&\;0.4{\mu}g)$ or i.pl. (0.3 mg) administration of morphine on melittin-induced pain responses. I.pl. injection of melittin at half the dosage of WBV strongly reduced mechanical threshold, and increased flinchings and paw thickness to a similar extent as those induced by WBV. Melittin- and WBV-induced flinchings and changes in mechanical threshold were dose- dependent and had a rapid onset. Paw thickness increased maximally about 1 hr after melittin and WBV treatment. Time-courses of nociceptive responses induced by melittin and WBV were very similar. Melittin-induced decreases in mechanical threshold and flinchings were suppressed by i.p., i.t. or i.pl. injection of morphine. I.t. administration of melittin $(6{\mu}g)$ reduced mechanical threshold of peripheral receptive field and induced flinching behaviors, but did not cause any increase in paw thickness. In the electrophysiological study, i.pl. injection of melittin increased discharge rates of dorsal horn neurons only with C fiber inputs from the peripheral receptive field, which were almost completely blocked by topical application of lidocaine to the sciatic nerve. These findings suggest that pain behaviors induced by WBV are mediated by melittin-induced activation of C afferent fiber, that the melittin-induced pain model is a very useful model for the study of pain, and that melittin-induced nociceptive responses are sensitive to the widely used analgesics, morphine.
Recently, an increase in the occurrence of sudden local flooding of great volume and short duration due to global climate changes has occasioned the significant danger and loss of life and property in Korea as well as most parts of the world. Such a local flood that usually occurs as the result of intense rainfall over small regions rises quite quickly with little or no advance warning time to prevent flood damage. To prevent the local flood damage, it is important to quickly predict the flood severity for flood events exceeding a threshold discharge that may cause the flood damage for inland areas. The aim of this study is to develop the NFI (New Flood Index) measuring the severity of floods in small ungauged catchments for use in local flood predictions by the regression analysis between the NFI and rainfall patterns. Flood runoff hydrographs are generated from a rainfall-runoff model using the annual maximum rainfall series of long-term observations for the two study catchments. The flood events above a threshold assumed as the 2-year return period discharge are targeted to estimate the NFI obtained by the geometric mean of the three relative severity factors, such as the flood magnitude ratio, the rising curve gradient, and the flooding duration time. The regression results show that the 3-hour maximum rainfall depths have the highest relationships with the NFI. It is expected that the best-fit regression equation between the NFI and rainfall characteristics can provide the basic database of the preliminary information for predicting the local flood severity in small ungauged catchments.
This paper presents an acoustic emission(AE) technique using ultrasonic sensors to diagonize power transformers. Conventional methods detect and measure the electrical signal of the partial discharge(PD) of transformers in operation. The proposed techniques measures the acoustic signal generated by the partial discharge, and counts the number of the waveforms above a threshold to diagonize transformers. Experiments showed that the proposed method improved diagonosis capability over the conventional PD method.
This paper focuses on minimizing flood damage in the Yeongdeok basin of South Korea by establishing a flood prediction model based on a geographic information system (GIS), remote sensing, and geomorphoclimatic instantaneous unit hydrograph (GcIUH) techniques. The GIS database for flash flood prediction was created using data from digital elevation models (DEMs), soil maps, and Landsat satellite imagery. Flood prediction was based on the peak discharge calculated at the sub-basin scale using hydrogeomorphologic techniques and the threshold runoff value. Using the developed flash flood prediction model, rainfall conditions with the potential to cause flooding were determined based on the cumulative rainfall for 20 minutes, considering rainfall duration, peak discharge, and flooding in the Yeongdeok basin.

This paper introduces a novel denoising algorithm for the partial-discharge(PD) signals from power apparatuses. The developed algorithm includes three kinds of specific denoising sub-algorithms. The first sub-algorithm uses the fuzzy logic which classifies the noise types in the magnitude versus phase PD pattern. This sub-algorithm is especially effective in the rejection of the noise with high and constant magnitude. The second one is the method simply removing the pulses in the phase sections below the threshold count in the count versus phase pattern. This method is effective in removing the occasional high level noise pulses. The last denoising sub-algorithm uses the grouping characteristics of PD pulses in the 3D plot of the magnitude versus phase versus cycle. This special technique can remove the periodical noise pulses with varying magnitudes, which are very difficult to be removed by other denoising methods. Each of the sub-algorithm has different characteristic and shows different quality of the noise rejection. On that account, a parameter which numerically expresses the noise possessing degree of signal, is defined and evaluated. Using the parameter and above three sub-algorithms, an adaptive complex noise rejection algorithm for the on-line PD diagnosis system is developed. Proposed algorithm shows good performances in the various real PD signals measured from the power apparatuses in the Korean plants.

This study demonstrates a novel approach of remotely sensed estimates of stream flow at fifteen hydrological station in the Han River Basin, Korea. Multi-temporal data of the European Space Agency's Sentinel-1 SAR satellite from 19 January, 2015 to 25 August, 2018 is used to develop and validate the flow estimation model for each station. The flow estimation model is based on a power law relationship established between the remotely sensed surface area of water at a selected reach of the stream and the observed discharge. The satellite images were pre-processed for thermal noise, radiometric, speckle and terrain correction. The difference in SAR image brightness caused by the differences in SAR satellite look angle and atmospheric condition are corrected using the histogram matching technique. Selective area filtering is applied to identify the extent of the selected stream reach where the change in water surface area is highly sensitive to the change in stream discharge. Following this, an iterative procedure called the Optimum Threshold Classification Algorithm (OTC) is applied to the multi-temporal selective areas to extract a series of water surface areas. It is observed that the extracted water surface area and the stream discharge are related by the power law equation. A strong correlation coefficient ranging from 0.68 to 0.98 (mean=0.89) was observed for thirteen hydrological stations, while at two stations the relationship was highly affected by the hydraulic structures such as dam. It is further identified that the availability of remotely sensed data for a range of discharge conditions and the geometric properties of the selected stream reach such as the stream width and side slope influence the accuracy of the flow estimation model.
The present study was carried out to characterize the functional properties of spinomesencephalic tract (SMT) neurons in the lumbar spinal cord of urethane anesthetized rats. Extracellular single unit recordings were made from neurons antidromically activated by stimulation of the midbrain area, including the deep layers of superior colliculus, periaqueductal gray and midbrain reticular formation. Recording sites were located in laminae I-VII of spinal cord segments of L2-L5. Receptive field properties and responses to calibrated mechanical stimulation were studied in 78 SMT cells. Mean conduction velocity of SMT neurons was $19.1{\pm}1.04\;m/sec$. SMT units were classified according to their response profiles into four groups: wide dynamic range (58%), deep/tap (23%), high threshold (9%) and low threshold (3%). A simple excitatory receptive field was found for most SMT neurons recorded in superficial dorsal horn (SDH). Large complex inhibitory and/or excitatory receptive fields were found for cells in lateral reticulated area which usually showed long after-discharge. Most of SMT cells received inputs from $A{\delta}$ and C afferent fiber types. These results suggest that sensory neurons in the rat SMT may have different functional roles according to their location in the spinal cord in integrating and processing sensory inputs including noxious mechanical stimuli.

We made ESD tester to measure ESD threshold voltage of semiconductor devices. The HBM ESD test is the most popular method to measure the ESD threshold voltage of MMSIC. We use flyback method which is one of the DC-DC converter to get high ESD voltage. With flvback method, we can isolate the 1ow voltage part from the high voltage part of HBM ESD tester. We use an air gap of the relay which is used for switch to satisfy the rise time of ESD standard(MIL-STD). As a result, with the flyback method and the air gap of relay, we can make ESD tester whose parasitic components are minimized.

a-Si:H and poly-Si TFT(thin film transistor) characteristics were investigated using an inverted staggered type TFT. The TFT an as-grown a-Si:H exhibited a low field effect mobility, transconductance, and high gate threshold voltage. The poly-Si films were achieved by using an isothermal and RTA treatment for glow discharge deposited a-Si:H films. The a-Si:H films were cystallized at the various temperature from 600$^{\circ}C$ to 1000$^{\circ}C$. As anneal temperature was elevated, the TFT exhibited increased g$\sub$m/ and reduced V$\sub$ds/. V$\sub$T/. The poly-Si grain boundary passivation with grain boundary trap types and activation energies as a function of anneal temperature. The poly-si TFT showed an improved I$\sub$nm//I$\sub$off/ ratio of 10$\^$6/, reduced gate threshold voltage, and increased field effect mobility by three orders.
